DJ Ayres, Freestyle Mix
Broadcast Date: March 31st, 2006
DJ Ayres needs no introduction... He's been holding down The Rub along with Cosmo Baker and DJ Eleven for years and has secured himself a nice position as one of the few men defining the sound of NY right now. Listening to on of Ayres sets is like getting an education in the history of the beat and this mix is no exception. With classic jams by Stacy Q, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, TKA and more, this Freestyle Mix plays like a 16 year girl on the streets of Brooklyn in 1985. DJ Ayres
The Agriculture Records Sampler mixed by Natural Sphere & DJ Olive
Broadcast Date: March 24th, 2006
"Manhattan is a world culture. Here, an Aussie can be the next hot chef, a Nigerian the next "it" girl, a Japanese person marries a Polish Ukranian, Muslim cabbies from Yemen drive Swiss doctors to Harlem for sushi, etc.... the world mixed in a somewhat less biased future blueprint of fusion genetics and cultural appreciation... Dance culture is fusion culture - not about fashion or about a certain beat on the cover of a magazine. It is an attitude based in independent love and life.
There is a party - a global dance party – we are all welcome. You will find the house, the garage, the dance hall... look for us there, where we will take you up to see the view from the roof. This is Brooklyn's roof music.
Natural Sphere and DJ Olive present the roster of Heaps funky rhythms... Guest Mixes presenting understated instrumentals reflecting a deep Sunrise vibe and a Sympathetic sound. Nonchalant. Timeless. Uplifting. These beats are full frequency therapy for the soul, a soundtrack for the down Home crew. Whether friendly yard breaks in the burbs or roof music in the urbans, this sound is of the street where all tribes are free. Recorded live at the Nature Party, downtown bad boy DJ Natural Sphere rocks an all Agriculture set with guests Pete Lawrence (the Big Chill) and qpe (the Agriculture)." The Agriculture

Broadcast Date: March 17th, 2006
This week is the first in a series of broadcasts by Nature Sounds Records DJ Reason. Nature Sounds has been bridging the gaps and changing rules in hip hop since 1993, making tracks that both nod heads and rock dancefloors. This broadcast is a biography of sorts on the production skills of Ayatollah. You're guaranteed at least one "oh sh... he did THAT track" in this mix (I know I had 3) that features Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Jean Grae and a roster of some of the finest East Coast MCs around. Nature Sounds
Nik at Nite of the Bangers, On Ice
Broadcast Date: March 10th, 2006
"On Ice is dedicated to anyone who had a walkman with only a fast forward button, stayed up late to record the Stretch and Bobbito show or bought dollar batteries from that cat on the scrubway. These are some less obvious joints and some re-jiggled classics that never left my side in the nineties as I trudged around this city catching tags and talking to girls. A soundtrack to my first love affair, hip hop. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do." - Nik At Nite, The Bangers
DJ Moe Choi, Mr. Underground Classic
Broadcast Date: March 3rd, 2006
Several months ago I started talking to DJ Moe Choi (aka Choimatic, one half of Robots in a Coma and member of the mighty Skullfuckers Clan) about putting a mix together. The problem is that both of us are kind of perfectionists. It's now three months and several SWEAT parties later but the effort was clearly worth it. FreeNYC is very proud to present Mr. Underground Classic. Recorded on three turntables and two mixers, this is an all vinyl mix of classic tracks, Choimatic exclusives, and vocal overdubs. The result is 55 minutes of serious music knowledge. The bar just got raised, ya heard! Choimatic

Nublu Records Sampler
Broadcast Date: January 20th, 2006
Here's a little taste of what's going on at Nublu these days. The little club on Avenue C is coming out with four EPs (iTunes and vinyl only) in February from Kudu, Our Theory feat. Erik Truffaz, Love Trio in Dub feat. U-Roy, and Forro in the Dark feat. Seu Jorge. Kudu's full-length, Death of the Party drops on March 14th. Full-lengths from Love Trio in Dub and Our Theory follow soon after.
Beginning this mix is a track from Send, a live recording from their early gig before Kudu at nublu on Tuesdays. There's also a track from the Epochs, who held a residency at Nublu for a few months early in 2005, and one from their drummer, the magnificent Kotchy, who makes meaty, loopless hip-hop tracks. Not to be forgotten are Butch Morris and the Nublu Orchestra, Bato the Yugo, Brazilian Girls, ElodieO, I Led Three Lives, or Wax Poetic... all be releasing tracks on the nublu label eventually. Enjoy! And come down and say what's up... (guest written by DJ Cocoa Cracker Brown, Nublu Resident) Nublu

Shakeyface, In It to Win It
Broadcast Date: January 13th, 2006
Shakeyface is the kind of DJ that makes dude's heads nod an girl's booties shake. Holding no style, coast, or school sacred, his funk fueled mixes span everything from the true school to the dirty south. This is the kind of stuff that legendary house parties are made of. Make sure you check out his latest, Bicycle Day Boogaloo coming out next month and drop by the release party Tuesday, January 17th at APT. (hosted by http://www.shakeyface.com) Shakeyface
Dave Q, Dubwar
Broadcast Date: January 6th, 2006
Some people love high frequency music. You know... hand claps, female vocals, acidic keyboards and more. Then there are those of us that feed off the nasty, rolling, booty shaking, deep bass subtones that you can not only hear but feel as well. The kind of bass that makes your heart rattle in your chest. Dave Q (http://dubquixote.blogspot.com/) is definitely part of the second group. He has been spearheading the NYC Dubstep movement for a minute now through his Dub War parties. By combining elements of grime, jungle, dub reggae, and dread bass, Dave's parties push the bass bins to the limit and make the kids miss the last train home. Make sure you drop in at the next party, January 27th at Rothko. (hosted by http://www.dqxt.org/dubwar/ and originally recorded for WNYU radio) Dubwar
