He has been holding The Rub down along with Cosmo Baker and DJ Eleven for years and has secured himself a nice position as one of the few men defining the sound of NY right now. Listening to on of Ayres sets is like getting an education in the history of the beat and this mix is no exception. These are some less obvious joints and some re-jiggled classics that never left my side in the nineties as I trudged around this city catching tags and talking to girls.
Oh, about three months ago I started talking to Moe Choi (aka Choimatic, one half of Robots in a Coma and member of the mighty Skullfuckers Clan) about putting a mix together. The problem is that both of use are kind of perfectionists. It's now three months and several SWEAT parties later but the effort was clearly worth it. FreeNYC is very proud to present Mr. Underground Classic. Recorded on three turntables and two mixers, this is an all vinyl mix of classic tracks, Choimatic exclusive, and vocal overdubs. The result is 55 minutes of serious music knowledge. The bar just got raised, ya heard! (www.choimatic.com)

This week we had a chance to record the whole things live. The room was packed, the comedy was hot, and even the IRA showed up for a joke or two. Check them out every Tuesday upstairs at Mo Pitkins.
FreeNYC presents: Nublu Records

Here's a little taste of what's going on at Nublu (www.nublu.net) these days. The little club on Avenue C is coming out with four EPs (iTunes and vinyl only) in February from Kudu, Our Theory feat. Erik Truffaz, Love Trio in Dub feat. U-Roy, and Forro in the Dark feat. Seu Jorge. Kudu's full-length, Death of the Party drops on March 14th. Full-lengths from Love Trio in Dub and Our Theory follow soon after.

Beginning this mix is a track from Send, a live recording from their early gig before Kudu at nublu on Tuesdays. There's also a track from the Epochs, who held a residency at Nublu for a few months early in 2005, and one from their drummer, the magnificent Kotchy, who makes meaty, loopless hip-hop tracks. Not to be forgotten are Butch Morris and the Nublu Orchestra, Bato the Yugo, Brazilian Girls, ElodieO, I Led Three Lives, or Wax Poetic... all be releasing tracks on the nublu label eventually. Enjoy! And come down and say what's up... (setlist at freenyc.net, hosted by freenyc.net)

FreeNYC presents: Dave Q (featuring MC Juakali), Dub War

Some people love high frequency music. You know... hand claps, female vocals, acidic keyboards and more. Then there are those of us that feed off the nasty, rolling, booty shaking, deep bass subtones that you can not only hear but feel as well. The kind of bass that makes your heart rattle in your chest. Dave Q (http://dubquixote.blogspot.com/) is definitely part of the second group. He has been spearheading the NYC Dubstep movement for a minute now through his Dub War parties. By combining elements of grime, jungle, dub reggae, and dread bass, Dave's parties push the bass bins to the limit and make the kids miss the last train home. Make sure you drop in at the next party, January 27th at Rothko. (hosted by http://www.dqxt.org/dubwar/ and originally recorded for WNYU radio)
