Something to Do

We've been on this glitchy hip hop tip for a minute now. Maybe its the nasty bass, or our love for the 303. Or maybe its just the most socially exceptable way that we can geek out to laptop music.
Tonight, SF's Kraddy invades New York with his version of blunted funk. Expect the unexpected... akin to this Dr. Dre remix.

Jonny Sender
In the 80's, Jonny played bass for seminal no wave latin post-punk funk legends Konk. One of the first groups to release DJ mixers (individual tracks of broken down song elements) on their singles, they counted Larry Levan, David Mancuso and Madonna among their fans and played such legendary clubs as Paradise Garage and The Loft. Currently he is 1/2 of the production duo House of Voodoo with Bruce Smith (The Pop Group, The Slits, Rip Rig and Panic) and has been DJing in NYC and abroad since '81 at such clubs as Danceteria, Mudd Club, Nell's, The Palladium, Joe's Pub, Roxy, Sound Factory Bar, and Limelight.
Dan Selzer
Dan's favorite disco is love songs for robots. He runs Acute Records which reissues forgotten post punk gems. He threw the now legendary Transmission party at the Plant Bar back in the day and invented nyhappenings. He is the other half of the Crazy Rhythms DJ crew. Only Dan knows how a synthesizer really feels.
Jeremy Campbell
Jeremy's favorite disco is on the outskirts of Frisco. He was a resident at Average Saturday's at Subtonic for about a year before starting ALLDISCO. Jeremy was too lame to dress up as Giorgio Moroder for Halloween and likes his clams on the half-shell with roller skates.
Rob Uptight
Rob's favorite disco is disco for sippin' wine and feelin' fine. He is a recent transplant from Portland, Oregon where he was a resident at Holocene. Rob is frequently first to the dance floor and his moves are suspiciously reminiscent of the hustle. His favorite food is quesadillas.

Raw

I was once told, by my best friend since sixth grade, that everyone should have a jungle dance. And while this is true, dance with caution, as a jungle dance, if implemented poorly, can also look like some sort of epileptic seizure. Anyway, expect to see lots of dancing at The Delancy tonight, as the kids over at Bassbot have put together a kick ass evening of jungle and ragga.

Extravaganza of Ridiculous Proportions VI
I'm not exactly sure how to explain this one, so lets use the words that the Glasshouse Gallery has given us "One night, two parties, one price, too much fun. Folk and country evening followed by Panda-monium, the Cyborg Panda Masquerade Dance Party." So the best I have figured, is that there is some sort of blues/country/folk extravaganza to begin the evening featuring music from Jeffrey Lewis, Micah Blue Smaldone, Death Vessel, Our Poor Neighbors, Andy Bosie, and Friends Band. Concluding the night will be the "madness with the dancing and the cyborg pandas and the robot battles and the cupcakes and the circus performers and the panda-monium begins. DJs Suggested D and Lady Vitamins. Prizes for best mask."
Date: Thurday, March 24th
Time: 7pm

The Formula for a Good Dance Party

Asterisk seems to mix the perfect cocktail for our Saturday nights. A particular FreeNYC author managed to shake her a$$ to the wee hours last week at what is fast becoming one of our favorite venues. We've disected their secret recipe and here it is:
1 part unpretentious venue
1 part come as you are and be yourself
1 part great local talent
2 parts cheap booze (hey, its Saturday)
This week they top it off with comedy antics (Whitest Kids you Know), live music (Epochs, Langhorne Slim) and a late night dance party (Cocoa Cracker Brown and Kenosha) to satisfy all you indecisive/apathedic weekend planners.

Its All Gone Pete Tong

I'm warning you all now, Its All Gone Pete Tong is my new obsession! I saw a screening on Monday night and it was real good.
Ok, let me fill you in a bit if you don't know too much about it. There once was a DJ named Frankie Wilde, who was legendary in Ibizia and in the dance music scene in general. Sadly, he suffers from a degenerative hearing disorder coupled with years of heavy drug use and the pounding beat of the clubs literally crumbled his eardrums leving him completly deaf at the height of his career. After a bit of a melt down, he ended up finding a way to produce an album and spin at Pancha as a deaf DJ. Following that set, he dissapeared from the scene and hasn't been seen since. I totally reccomend you go see the movie as my desription doesn't really do Frankie or the movie justice.
Now that we're all caught up and on the same page, I can't find another free screening to send you all to, but there is a Brooklyn premier party at the Stay Gold Gallery tonight. I haven't been able to find many details, except that DJ John XI will be providing the music. It may be worth checking out.
Date: Thursday, April 14th
Time: 7pm - 10pm
Location: Stay Gold Gallery, 213 N. 8th W'burg
Cost: Free with RSVP
** I heard a rumor that Pete Tong will be doing an in-store at Virgin on Wednesday or Thursday in the Dance area downstairs. Its all very hush hush, so its hard to get details. **

Mayday 2005
I have been to this event for the past four or five years and I can honestly say that its the best way to kick off the summer. Sadly I will not be able to amke it this year, so I expect you all to go to the 19th annual Mayday celebration in Tompkins Square Park and report back to me on all the fun I have missed. If you have never been, here are a few things you need to know. A, there are always a slew of great DJs (this years line up hasn't been posted yet but in the past they have included Afrika Bamabaataa, DJ Red Alert, Frankie Bones, Lenny Dee, Carlos Soulslinger). B, expect a big semi-rowdy crowd as its one of the first days everyone has left their houses for the summer, and come on now, how oftern do you get to dance with hundreds of people in a park. And C, don't be scared away by the heavy police presence (please see previous statement if you need an explination), generally if you leave them alone, they leave you alone.
For more information check out Blackkat If you want to get involed the folks over there say "We are currently soliciting Circus performers, artists, performers, vendors, political organizations, body-painters, acrobats, clowns, break-dancers, etc. to take parthttp in the festivities. We are also looking for volunteers that can help with promotions, flyering, set up, take down, fundraising and other organizational aspects of this event. Lets make this event belong to everyone!"
**Here is an update about this event...Due to some issues with permits from the Parks Department, there will not be a stage this year, and they may have less equipment than normal, but the show WILL go on! This years line up will include MC Baba Isreal (Live Hip Hop) The Kin (Live Rock Band)DJ Chrome (Drum-n-bass), plus performances by Missy Galore, Groovehoops, and others.**

All Hands on Deck

So there is this rickety old boat called the Frying Pan, which is like perma-docked at Chelsea Piers, that people rent out and throw parties on. So picture this...Saturday night, on a pier overlooking the Hudson, with some Drum and Bass, Hip Hop, Reggae, Dancehall and maybe even a lil 80's funk. This is all sounding quite fun. So have a beer chill out on the water and listen to ph10, DJ Mayday and DJ Stabba, Pow Wow, Destro, and Jason BK. If I make it out of Brooklyn on Saturday night, you know where to find me.

Independence Means...

If Halcyon were a kid, its teacher may tell it to write a paper entitled "What does independence mean to you?" It would probabaly read something like "Independence means giant f-ing block party" And then they might note that "on the tar beach right in front of the new halcyon there's gonna be live bands on an outdoor stage plus two systems with djs including lotsa old halcyon heads like Romeo, The Dahker, Chicus, Fat Kat, Taboo & Kwala, and... a freakin' 35' geodesic dome! Burton Bash

Well it's officially October and you know what that means... FreeNYC starts obsessing about snowboarding. So we figured to kick it off we should start with the Burton World Tour event tonight. There will be a Burton fashion show (hot boys and girls in snowpants and goggles), their video premier, a couple live bands and some riders you may have heard of (Keir Dillon, Trevor Andrew, JP Solberg, Shaun White, Anne Molin Kongsgaard, Hann). Looks like its time for me to bust out the snowboard, strap it on in my living room and await the first snow!
Date: Tuesday, October 4th
Time: 9pm - 4am
Venue: Avalon, 20th and 6th

Keep It Local

As if there aren't enough things dissauding you from going into the city tonight, like bomb threats, the sketchy L train, and hordes of NYU kids, Savalas is trying to keep you out in the 'Burg with their party, Zero Transportation. Brought to you by DJs Brian Beck, Michael Elkind, Paul Rocha, and this week's guest DJ, Vito, from The Rapture. Now, I haven't been to this one yet but "Zero Transportation supports music that will send you stumbling home - on foot - at 4am" and that is something I'm very much in favor of (plus I really liked their flyer).

I-Manifest Open Studio Party
At least once a month I have a conversation with a friend about starting our own tee shirt line. About half of those times I am the one that brings it up. All that really ever happens though, is that someone buys a bunch of equiptment, maybe makes that one shirt, and never picks it up again.
So I have to give it up to the guys over at I-Manifest who have managed to build a growing product out of the rest of our whims. On top of being conscious (sweatshop-free tees), and well crafted (each screen is hand pulled), the design voice is well beyond the usual illustrative mimicry and obligatory skull print.
Tonight they are opening their studio for burgers and beers so stop by and ask them all your burning questions about how to do it yourself.

All Year I Dream About Adidas

In case you were wondering, the Adidas store has been calling Wooster Street home for a whole year now. You may be asking yourself, "Why is she telling me this?" Well kids, our friends over at Adidas are throwing themselves a lil one year anniversary party, and its sounding like a pretty good time. Papaya King is providing the food (yay hotdogs!) and beverages will be courtesy of Dos Equis, Skyy Vodka and 1800 Tequila! (So if any of you see me there do NOT let me drink too much Tequila!) And topping off the party, is DJ Cosmo, from The Rub, on music.

Stay (old Abaya) is quickly making some serious appearances on our site here. Tonight the Microcosm Music team is bringing the grand depth on NYC's electronic music scene to their floor. The night will range from live string quartet music to techno and all points in between. High on on my list of intersts is Giles Dickerson's dub set which should run the gambit from roots reggae to electro dub a la Deadbeat and Al Haca. Also, it will be nice to hear Breakbeat Science's DJ Clever spin his unique blend of leftfield drum & bass as the boy has been off my radar for a minute now. Stay has some narrow space to it so it will be intersting to see how the dancing fares. Not that you can dance in NYC but...

DIW magazine is throwing down tonight at the always intersting Scenic. There DJ talent (ironically) runs the gambit of hipster sounds from dance to rock to... um... dance rock? Danny Le Nimh closes the night with a set of heavy, sweaty tracks to keep you until closing. Raspberry Jones, Lady Duplex, and Mach Man Andy Savage fill out the night.

House party is right. In that deep, funky, old school NYC house that keeps you dancing all night. This is one of the best spots to get down on the weekend without the mess, hassle, and door charge of the city's larger venues (and better music). Barcade, for those of you who have been never dared venture west of Bedford Ave in Williamsburg, is one of my favorite local jaunts (or jawns if you are from Philly.) They house over a dozen fine crafted micro-brews on tap along with a full bar and over a dozen classic video games (including Tapper, Punch Out, and the quarter eating Rampage). Tonight they are having a sort of air guitar video game fundraiser where you will have a chance to win an XBox 360 in a raffle and play Guitar Hero on a big screen. B Side Sessions... Plastic Little and Blockhead!

[redacted] I take it back, I reach out to Urb and they get back to me. Still love that magazine... Philly kids Plastic Little are poised to barnstorm the NYC scene with their unique and infectious take on hip hop and will perform live tonight. To counter balance their pop-sensibility, FreeNYC favorite Blockhead is also on the bill to bring the future of leftist trip-hop in a live laptop set. Dempsey and DJ Jer 2 round out the night. NOTE: Joe's pub is probably the most unorganized venue in the city (besides the Anthology Film Archives) so please do not hate us if there is a giant crowd of 100 people outside and they start an hour and a half late. It makes the Joe's Pub kids think they are cool and that people like them. To bad they put together good events. [re: hater and frostbitten from my last attempt to roll though])

So sometimes I get giddy about big DJ's. I am fascinated that there are no new ones (and people don't take the new guys that we love as seriously) but still... sometimes you just need to sweat it out on the dancefloor. Body Temple NYE

The Body Temple NYE Party is a world celebration of the new year, literally. I'm not even exactly sure where to begin with this one, so how 'bout we start with music. "GlobeSonic Sound System DJs Fabian Alsultany and Derek Beres burning up the dance floor with their Lush, Electro-Epic, World-Beat Sauce Ushering in the Magic Carpet Ride to the Tantric Divine." Then there isthe swirling, hypnotic sounds of Haale (you may recall us writing about her a few weeks back)and The Body Temple drummers. Ok so pretty straight forward thus far, but here is where it begins to get tricky, how about a Tantric-Kabbalah, Shamanic Dance ritual? And if that's not enough what about an Aerial Dance & Cirque Nouveau by FireFlyDance. And in case it's still not enough, there is Dancefloor puppetry, Urban Gypsy Circus Body Painters, The Lovelixer Chill Lounge, The Live Cafe - featuring sensual food, elixers, and insane Raw Chocolate Decadence. Come on now, chocolate decadence! Madness I tell you, madness! The insanity comes with a price though, $35 in advance and $450 at the door.
Date: Saturday, December 31st
Time: 8:00pm - 5:00am
Location: Brooklyn Lyceum, 227 4th Avenue (Corner of President St), Park Slope

Rub Up On NYE

The Rub gets my award for the most fun party I have never been to. Seriously, I hear great things about their Saturday night parties at Southpaw, from the music to the people, its suppossed to be great. However we tend not to talk about it 'round these parts due to the $10 price tag, but I swear in 2006, I will get out there at some point. Anyway, if you want to get a head start on me, you may want to check out The Rub for your NYE. Tonight you got DJ Ayres, Cosmo Baker and DJ Eleven. And since its NYE there is a $25 cover, but there is a free chanpagne toast at midnight and everyone gets the newest Rub mixtape!
Learn more about The Rub here.

A Complacent New Years
No one writes about a complacent party better then they do. These guys throw the best (yes, you can battle with Rublaud for that title) old school style warehouse parties, street parties, and all out mayhem in the city so I will let them do the talking on this one. Click here for full info and invite...
To the Dreamers,
We've saved the best for last. You are invited to join us
for New Years Dream - blending a dose of music with a kiss of
liquor to wake the coming year. Imagine a hidden space just
beyond the broken streets of Dumbo Brooklyn - the expansive
studio of Complacent Nation, C-Spot Designs and the Brooklyn
Media Lab. Imagine a couple thousand square feet of
cinderblock fortress built into three areas of cozy nooks,
open dance-floors and massive light installations.
This is about intimacy....
Escape the trap of the New Years party behemoth and
overpriced exercises in desperation. This event is about
gathering a few hundred of our closest friends and lovers
with champagne, mistletoe and the best music in Brooklyn.
Featuring Reverend Vince and the Love Choir playing
soul-shaking funk/gospel to dance away sin and sanctity as
we cheer in the New Year (reverendvince.com). Plus an
ass-shaking drum and piano duet by KiEthan with guest vocals
from Digitelle. Breaks, house, dub and techno by dj's John S.
of Spec4 with vocals by Rhiannon, Jason BK and Mad Aro of
990/Blackkat playing until sunrise.
This is about intrigue.
Marvel to wall-to-wall video projections by Luxz with
illbient beat mechanics from Dok, Tomster and Masa of Amoeba
Technology along with light installations by will (nation)
and installed art by Charlotte C.Spot and Ursula Wing. Find
cures for what ale's ya by Miss Elixer, a big cash bar, free
goodies for the good and naughty bits for the bad.
This is inexpensive.
There are many New Years events to choose from with many
different prices so we decided to do something wildly different.
This event is for the gutter glamorous and the creatively
inspired. This event is for you dreamers who are broke,
beautiful and deserving of more.
This event is about everything but money.
New Years Dream will be as thick, full and immersive as every
party we host, all for a lot less and all on New Years night.
This New Years Dream is yours for $2.99 if you got it, and
nothing if you don't. (Yes, New Years Eve for less than $3.)
The catch?
First, you and those you arrive with must bring 1 bottle of
champagne to pop, sip and share at the stroke of midnight.
The bottle can be cheap or extravagant, it's for you and your
posse. Second we have only a couple hundred invites available
and we are giving them out to the best and brightest.
This is the New Years you Dream of (and deserve)

NYE In Willy B

One of the reasons I tend to flee the city on NYE is that there is soooo much nonsense, and not the good kind of nonsense, the annoying kind! Well leave it to DJ Synapse to do away with all the unneeded drama and throw a New Years party with out the INSANE cover charges and just kick it Willy B style. Tonight, DJ Synapse and friends will be at Red And Black all night, and rocking funk, soul reggae, hip hop, rock and everything in between. Definitely a good drama free way to begin '06.
Date: Saturday, December 31st

AllDisco
AllDisco, the local weekly dance party that helped make Williamsburg... well... Williamsburg over this past year is calling it quits. This party got me through many a bored night staring at hipsters at Supreme Trading or watching midwest transplants makeout at Union Pool (side note: if you want to make out with midwest girls in studded belts, go to Union Pool and talk about how you love Wild Turkey). Thankfully, they are going out with a bang in the form of a farewell NYE party. AllDisco opts for a much more relaxed vibe where you can get down without all the usual drama. Dan Selzer and Jeremy Campbell spin a spaced out version of disco-meets-Bedford rock all night with a free champagne toast at midnight. And, of course, Capone's always has free pizza. So come wish a fond farewell to one of the best parties of 2005.
Listen to Dan and Jeremy at AllDisco's spaced out halloween party (mp3)

CUT NYE
Ok, first of all, Brooklyn is certainly taking the cake for which side of the river to hang out on this New Years Eve, there are about eight billion parties. And Secondly, when this party came across our "desks" last week, we were a little unvlear if we should post or not, cause we weren't sure if this was like a private, friend only loft party type dealy or all out mayhem. But now it seems the whole world knows about, so you should too. And yes, I am guessing it will be all out mayhem from this brief description...
"Bare ankles. PDAcore. Screaming. Waving towels around your head like a helicopter. Pink polos. Gold chains. Dirty sneakers. Clean underwear. Anticking. Flame grills. Hookups. Breakdowns. Cockfights. Twatblocking. Counting down. Coming up. It's New Years Eve dudes. Do not pay money to run around when you can stay in Brooklyn and make out with strangers."
So join the boys from Cut for their loft party with DJ's The Captain, Star Eyes, Drop The Lime, Tha Pumpsta, and Andy Pry. Bring your own booze and bring your own friends.
Date: Saturday, December 31st
Time: 10pm

Rublaud New Years
Rublaud makes our new year's list because, well, they throw the best damn parties in Brooklyn (okay, you can fight with Complacent for that title but still). This is a "intergalactic maked ball" so a mask may be a good idea. But, then again, a mask is always a good idea on new years. Expect mayhem, live bands, rappers, a light circus, food, and DJs to the early morning.

Gunther at Galaxie!

So I got this info a day or two ago and was all like "a party where you have to take a car from Williamsburg? Walk 12 blocks?" But then all night tonight people kept telling me about the chill vibe, the late night fun, the top notch DJs, the bowling (!) and even the cheap drinks. So here it is... Gunther goes down tonight at Galaxie, an out of the way but (aparently) well worth it spot deep in Ridgewood (?). It's just a short car ride away however and the parties goes late, the drinks are cheap, the djs get you going, and they even have bowling and video games. Think roller skating birthday gone wild. If you go, let me know what you think (or buy me a drink because I am sure I'll end up there after the Shakeyface party)
