Publishers Weekly
Emmy-winning TV producer George examines the ambition, deception, corruption and pervasive drug culture that lurk on the underside of the music world in this noirish thriller, which opens with the kidnapping of pop singer Night, the protagonist of George's Night Work (2003). D Hunter, the moody head of a security firm, gets hired to deliver the ransom for Night and provide bodyguards for hot pop singer Bridgette Haze, a sexy blonde trying to crash the mainly black urban music world by hosting a hip-hop awards ceremony in New York. Meanwhile, D must keep his unruly security staff in line; navigate his relationship with Emily Anekwe, his British-Nigerian girlfriend who runs a popular downtown club; and protect Bridgette and himself from threats by a mysterious motorcycle gang. Handsome, powerful, contemplative, with both of his brothers murdered and his father long gone, D struggles to accept his mother's remarriage and his own HIV positive diagnosis. This fast-paced book is written with a syncopation that parallels its setting, but the many subplots and large cast of characters, although well developed, weigh it down. Agent, David Robie at Big Score Productions. (Feb. 2) Forecast: George is also the author of The Death of Rhythm and Blues and Hip Hop America, both nominees for National Book Critics Circle Awards. He'd make an excellent interview subject, if S&S makes the effort to tour him. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Also, [there's an] open Vitamin Water bar while supplies last. The open bar is going to make this ridiculous. Sweaty tits-ahoy." You get the point. It'll be total ridiculousness for nada. SPORT OF ART:
An exercise in two parts
by Surface to Air
Presented with 180 pairs of adidas Samoa shoes, Surface to Air re-interpreted the idea of a 'classic' and manipulated it into something newly 'original' - as an integral part of two other classics: the Barcelona chair by Mies van der Rohe and the Grand Confort by Le Corbusier.
In addition, Surface to Air sought to further the transformation of the shoe in a manner by which its original intentions and identity were not compromised - using the act of sport as a means by which to create art. In this instance, the shoe becomes the brush and the motion of running becomes the technique in manifesting a series of paintings that elaborate the scope within which a shoe, a brand and an artist inhabit together

It's time for another listening party. This one is for Living Things'Head of the Lion. The deal is sweetened with a 2.5 hr open bar of Newcastle and a DJ set by Doug Brod.
It's time for Maximum Joy once again, the free booze invasion of the Adidas store. Maybe this time they'll rememeber the ice! There's an ambitious 3 hour open bar and music by Blu Jemz and Ge-ology who are both fantastic but can be caught any Tuesday for free at Opus22. Why do brands always throw parties with DJs i can see any day of the week? What kind of draw is that? Oh.... 3 hour open bar... got it.
Date: Thursday, October 6th Time: 7:00pm Location: Adidas Originals store (136 Wooster Street) Cost: Free, bring flyer printout
Finally, someone combined all of our favorite things into one night... V2 records invades our current favorite venue for a Gang of Four CD release/listening party. Free Red Stripe is on hand from 9-10. In the words of the promoter... "As Gang Of Four is a great and political band, we know it will be an exciting cultural event."
Date: Thursday, October 6th Time: 9:00pm - 12:00am Location: Nublu (Avenue 6 between 4th and 5th) Cost: Free
This is FreeNYC's official WTF party of the week. Tonight is a release (and hopefully listening) party for Sinead O'Conners Throw Down Your Arms which is a 12 song collection of reggae (reggae? oh reggae!) songs from the likes of Lee Perry and Pete Tosh. You should come out just to snag a copy of the CD. Featuring DJs J-maz and Free Red Stripe.
Date: Thursday, October 6th Time: 9:00pm - 12:00am Location: No. 1 Chinese (50 Avenue B at 4th Street) Cost: Free
It took me a while to find some info on this one but it seems that there is a new party at Happy Ending called Maxi-Mal on the first Thursday of the month. The keywords are right up our alley these days (industrial, NRG, acid breaks, freestyle and italo eclectro) and the 2 hr open bar from 10-12 and the giveaways from Lucky Jeans makes it a worth one to check out. Thursdays in NYC have been slacking lately... maybe this is the party to fire this town back up. DJ bio's after the fold curtesy of Repellentzine.
Date: Thursday, October 6th Time: 10:00pm Location: Happy Ending (302 Broome Street Between Forsyth and Eldridge) Cost: Free
Showing no concern for established dance music boundaries, Brennan Green has become one of the most talented, innovative and prolific producers today. His releases and remixes run the gamut from deep house to minimal electro and italo disco. Not content with confining his talents solely to the studio, Green brings his music directly to the people via the turntables. His DJ repertoire includes not only mixing, but cutting and beat-juggling as well. Upon arriving in NYC from Toronto, Green cut his teeth with the Downstreamers 12" on John Selway's minimal house label CSM. Subsequently, he befriended disco cult hero Daniel Wang and teamed up for a slew of remix productions, among them the infamous Block 16 on Wang's seminal Balihu imprint. Through a regular spot at the Play NYC parties, Green helped pioneer the current deep disco sound. His "Pop Your Funk" party, at meatpacking district dancespot APT, gave Brennan the chance to really display his DJ chops, holding his own among legends like Andrew Weatherall [Two Lone Swordsmen] , Sal Principato [Liquid Liquid], Martin Moscrop [A Certain Ratio], Maurice Fulton [Mu] and Steve Kotey [Chicken Lips]. Recovering from his first bout of serious touring, which included dates around the US, and some globetrotting to Australia and Japan, Green is currently producing and working A&R for Modal Records. He's also in the process of launching his own musical footprint, Chinatown. Expect more of his trademark production, i.e. vibrant instrumentation, atypical beats, and quirky, irresistible
melodies. Brennan Green's past credits include releases and remixes on John Selway's CSM, Balihu, Bear Funk, Francois K's esteemed Wave Music, Hans Peter Lindstrom's Feedelity, Peacefrog, Paper, Nuphonic, Output, CoCo Machete, Romklang, Rushhour, Maya, Courtsquare, Electrik Soul, Mood Music, Icon, and Truffle.
Direct from Vienna, Hannes Baumann brings the secrets of his successful Icke Micke party to the streets of New York. The list of artists that this king of the Viennese scene [alongside partner Tibcurl] have hosted reads like a who's who of current techno and house superstars - DJ Koze, Andrew Weatherall, Apparat, Jennifer Cardini, Luciano, Christopher Just, g.rizo, Justus Kohncke, Mooner, Mu, Patrick Pulsinger, and T. Raumschmiere, to name just a few. Along the way, Baumann learned what it takes to seriously rock the dancefloor, and carry a party into uncharted, deep and sexy territory.
Feel like havin' a few friday night? Stop by Luke and Leroy for 2-4-1 drink specials and open bar from 10 to 11. DJ Mister X will be spinning the likes of The Smiths, Siouxsie, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, The Cure, Joy Division, etc, etc. You get the idea.
Date: Friday, October 7th Time: 10pm - 4am Venue: luke and Leroy's, 21 7th Avenue South Cost: Free
It's Walk Easy time again... Sonny Ray and crew bring you a good time shake down of hip-hop, soul, and other sweet sounds to warm up your weekend. Free Jever beer from 10:00-11:00 makes this an extra worthy stop off in your nights travels.
Date: Saturday, October 8th Location: Loreley, downstairs lounge (7 Rivington between Bowery and Chrystie) Time: 10:00pm Cost: Free
I do not really approve of any of these parties as they are "exclusive" (meaning just another list that you are not on). I do, however, try to give you guys an open bar every night. So here are two that I found on Windchill and another that was floating around on the web. If you need more, check out myopenbar.com as I am sure they will have something to satisfy your thirst.
Date: Tuesday, October 11th Time: 11:00pm Location: Happy Valley (14 East 27th St) Cost: Free with RSVP (or try bringing a printout)
[no flyer] Gotham Magazine's 100 hottest bachelors. "Join us as we celebrate our October Issue with more than just a few good men! Enjoy a special gift from Victorinox Swiss Army and sample signature cocktails from Finlandia Vodka"

Continuing my "a man's got to drink" posting mentality from yesterday, I need to tell you about this sweet flowing Jameson Whiskey open bar. The Onion magazine is bringing a tastier than usual open bar for the afterwork crowd today to the upper east side - a part of New York I usually reserve purely for doctors visits. Beyond that, I have no idea what to expect out of this one. Open bar from 7 until it runs out.
Date: Wednesday, October 12th Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm Location: Turtle Bay Lounge (987 2nd Ave between 52nd adn 53rd) Cost: Free with RSVP
Here are three vices for your Wednesday night, djs, dancing and of course, free drinks. Tonight Movida gives you Neil Aline, Matthias Heilbronn and Jay-J spinning dance, soul and global sounds. And grab a free drink from 10 'til 11.
Date: Wednesday, October 12th Time: 10pm - 4am Venue: Movida, 28 7th Ave S. Cost: Free
Since I don't have any flyer's today for either of my favorite Wednesday weekly parties, I thought I satisfy my inner hipster-frat-boy with this old shot of Bust from Last Night's Party. So look at all the fun you could be having tonight instead of sitting home watching TV. Both of these parties are awesome so pick your poison, Tivo Lost, and get to it! (photo by Merlin Bronques, obviously)
BANG! - Free Svedka Vodka from 10 - 11 Date: Wednesday, October 12th Time: 10:00pm Location: No. 1 Chinese (50 Avenue B between 3rd and 4th Cost: Free
BUST! - Free well drinks from 10:30 - 11:30 Date: Wednesday, October 12th Time: 10:30pm Location: Boys' Room (9 Ave A, bt. 1st and 2nd Streets) Cost: Free
Me Magazine is a pretty interesting concept. Each issue is dedicated to one person (except this one, which is a team) and all of the people in their lives. The second issue - and only one that has ever graced my inbox - was all about Miho Aoki from United Bamboo and it was actually pretty interested to get the full insite into someone's life rather then the usual rewritten one sheet. All of this, of course, has nothing to do - really - with the fact that they are having a launch party for issue #5 (the Rivington Arms issue) tonight. Open Red Stripe from 9 - 11.
Date: Thursday, October 13th Time: 9:00pm Location: Happy endings (302 Broome Street) Cost: Free with RSVP
This will most likely be another sweaty LES hipster throw down. James on the tables is always a good time and open bar from 10:30-11:30 will get things going.
Date: Thursday, October 13th Time: 10:30pm Location: No. 1 Chinese (50 Avenue B) Cost: Free
We Care A Lot (less) returns to Luke and Leroy tonight but I'm not sure they actually still care. This was my first tip off... "but this time, we actually care a lot less about pretty much everything, except the guests." So yeah that part is true, they do care about the music as they've got TOK TOK, MICHA KLANG and residents Dirty Jean and Cowboy Mark for the night. There will also be an open bar for an hour at some point in the night, but they don't care to tell us when. And they are also being a lil vague on the whole cover charge thing, so you just may want to keep a couple bucks in your pocket.
Date: Friday, October 14th Time: 11pm Venue: Luke and Leroy, 21 7th Ave Cost: Free (maybe)
Don't you love when you have a binge of a good time at night... roll into the office hung over the next day... and have a dozen of your friends email you some embarrasing picture from Last Night's Party? Well tonight you can all enjoy your finer moments at their big projection party at Trash. I am sure some fresh footage will come out of this one so bring you game face and be prepared for a late night of debaucharous fun. Open Vodka/PBR from 11 - 12.
Date: Friday, October 14th Time: 11:00pm Location: Rififi (332 East 11th) Cost: Free
Downtown for Democracy is a political action committee founded by professionals in the arts, music, fashion, film, publishing, advertising, design and other creative media. Our goal is a progressive resurgence in America. To that end, we mobilize America's creative community to engage new voters and elect progressiv candidates." Tonight, however, they drink free Vodka and Red Stripe while listening to the sound of downtown's own James Friedman.
Date: Monday, October 17th Time: 8:00pm - 11:00pm Location: Groupe 16sur20 (267 Elizabeth Street) Cost: Free with RSVP
You know the saying "once you pop, you can't stop," well, at times, this saying also applies to my tequila drinking practices. If you suffer from a similar affliction, than you may want to check out the private Rolling Stone Cuervo Party. Come by, have a drink and hear The Sights play.
Date: Tuesday, October 18th Time: 7pm - 11pm Venue: Canal Room, 285 W Broadway Cost: Free with RSVP
Anyone who throws a Mike Giant illustration on their flier gets me excited about their party. So when its NYC street staple Mass Appeal... well... you know its gonna be a good time. FreeNYC fav DJ Synapse holds down the tables while Seagrams provides social lube. This is either an early night out or a late day in the office... you be the judge.
Date: Tuesday, October 18th Time: 8:00pm Location: Kabin (94 2nd ave between 5th and 6th) Cost: Free
NOTE: Today is the RSVP deadline (please respond by 4pm). This party takes place on Thursday at 7pm
Triple 5 Soul keeps banging out these artist colab. projects at their Williamsburg location. This time they have teamed up with Maya Hayuk whose soft, ornate illustrative style is unjustified by the flyer above. Tomorrow they are having an obligatory throw down for the project with free bacardi and music by Prefuse 73 and Roxy Pain. You must, however, RSVP by 4pm today in order to get in. Expect the usual crowd of scenesters climbing over one another for free drinks. Prefuse is a great DJ though so he's worth the trip. Info below is for the day of the event.
Date: Thursday, October 20th Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location: T5S Brooklyn (145 Bedford at North 9th, Williamsburg) Cost: Free with RSVP
Heeb, the "New Jew Review," is celebrating the release of their sex issue tonight with a little balagon at 6's and 8's. There's an early open bar from 9-10 and DJs Omega 1, Captain Planet and Japanster will be playing all night as well as VJs and projections. I know my shaygetz a$$ will be in attendance to peep the heeb hotties and - for the ladies - maybe you can finally find that nice Jewish boy that your mother has been nagging you about.
Date: Wednesday, October 19th Time: 9:00pm Location: 6's and 8's (205 Chrystie Street at Stanton) Cost: Free
The Urb Crew is throwing their B-Sides series again tonight at the swanky Joe's Pub... my favorite place to see a show when they do not demand a two drink (about $15 by Joe's standards) minimum. Hopefully the formalities will be set aside tonight since there will be some sort of undisclosed open bar. Regardless, you should roll through just to see J-Live who's flow draws parallels to the Quannum crew (think Gif of Gab or Lyrics Born) but with a New York gritty city edge. Kev Brown, Big Tone, & DJ Center join in. It's gonna be a late night.
The Oxycottontail crew, providers of great staple parties such as the Monday night Sway parties, is starting a new Thursday at (ack!) Glo. Two of the hippest DJs around - Mark Ronson and DJ Jus Ske - provide the backdrop and, judging by the flyer, there should be some sort of open bar (no promises). Expect a packed, sweaty scene.
Date: Thursday, October 20th Time: 10:00pm?, 11:00pm? Location: Glo (431 West 16th between 9th and 10th) Cost: Free with RSVP
This one came straight from myopenbar.com... "Free beer of some sort. Also, free copies of Filter Magazine, free RockStar drink and bullshit from Crunch fitness. Bands downstairs, DJ's everywhere including MOB's Rob Hitt. Return of the James Brown hour with live percussionists."
Date: Thursday, October 20th Time: 10:00pm Location: The Delancey (168 Delancy Street between Clinton and Attorney) Cost: Free with RSVP
All I know... Dj's Lindsay and Jaclyn rock upstairs while PF Cuttin & DJ Spae hit up the downstairs at sluts and aces. Open Absolute and Sparks upstairs from 10-11. Good jump-off.
Date: Friday, October 21st Time: 10:00pm Location: 6's and 8's (corner of Chrystie and Stanton) Cost: Free
Sweat is one of my favorite parties in NYC simply because rather than bring in one talented DJ and lots of filler they pack two rooms with amazing DJs all night long. Usually, however, we can't really talk about it on FreeNYC because the cover charge falls out of our "nothing over $5 range."
But when Mr. Choimatic - one half of Robots in a Coma with the equally talented Chasekillz - sent me over the lineup this month, I knew something had to be done. I mean... really... how often do you get a chance to see Baltimore/DC's Tittsworth & Dave Nada rip up a DJ AND Live PA set? This is going to be one of those good time get downs that we love when our fav's like Scottie B or K-Swift come to town.
So what we have done for you - our beloved FreeNYC community - is struck a little deal. You can get our our special FreeNYC list for a reduced reduced entry cost of only $5. And with an open Bacardi bar from 10:30-11:30 your cover will balanced out with your first free drink! It's just our way of keeping those NYC financial barriers at bay. RSVP here and I'll see you Saturday!
Date: Satruday, October 22nd Time: 10:00pm Location: 6s & 8s (205 Chrystie Street at Stanton) Cost: $10, $8 with flyer, $5 with FreeNYC RSVP!
To be honest, I don't know anything about Prophecy Magazine, but I do know that they are having their issue release party tonight. Two other key points here though, ?uest Love of The Roots will be DJing and its an open bar all night. (swiped from windchill)
Date: Monday, October 24th Time: 10pm - 2am Venue: The Little Green Lounge, 35 Grand Street Cost: Free with RSVP
So I have no idea about this one. I don't know Scale, their space, or what their film and video work is all about. I am guessing they are some sort of design studio. I do know that Kudu is playing and they are a hella good dance band. I also know that there is some serious DJ talent and free Brahma Beer. I am assuming that there will be good video projections as well.
Date: Tuesday, October 25th Time: 7:00pm - late Location: Scale (437 Washington Street, 2nd floor) Cost: Free with RSVP
I guess since The L Magazine represents some of the more stylish of borough dwellers, they decided to host a little fashion show. The clothing will all be from Atrium on Broadway. The best part is they will feed you free Moet from 9 to 11.
Date: Tuesday, October 25th Time: 9pm - 11pm Venue: PM, 50 Gansevoort St Cost: Free with RSVP
I really thought that I could not pump the Timewarp party up any more. Ge-ology and Blu Jemz - both master beat makers - spin top notch hip hop in the super comfy Opus22. But tonight, they throw Sadat X and DJ Spinna into the mix. Add an open bar from 10-11 and free givaways and you have one fine Tuesday night.
Date: Tuesday, October 25th Time: 10:00pm Location: Opus22 (559 West 22nd Street at 11th Ave) Cost: Free
Enojy your Wednesday night with art, music, good people and of course an open bar. Come celebrate the release of ANIMAL issue 6 and the third bday of The Now Corporation. DJs Spae, Hoe a.k.a. Henery Eshelman, Kerry Hinton and Josh Styles provide the music.
Date: Wednesday, October 26th Time: 7pm - 'til your drunk Venue: BLVD, 199 Bowery Cost: Free with RSVP
It's a very special halloween version of Corrosion as DJ Mister X presents a tribute to Siousie and the Banshees. Expect the usual joy Division, Cure, Smiths, Ministry, Front 242, etc as well on the decks and an open bar from 9-10.
Date: Wednesday, October 26th Time: 9:00pm Location: Luke & Leroy (21 7th Ave at Leroy) Cost: Free
Its another sweaty nasty electro-cum-indie-cum-drag-cum-hipster-just-cum party at Boys Room. New Wave-Go-Go-Electro keeps you moving all night and an open bar from 10:30 - 11:30 opens your inhibitions. Total hyphen count: 11
Date: Wednesday, October 26th Time: 10:30 Location: Boy's Room (9 Ave A Between 1st & 2nd) Cost: Free
Every once and a while I will brave The Delancey - packed full of tourist hipsters and one of the worst internal layouts I have ever seen - for a good band or a good deal. Tonight kind of has both. Michael Leviton performs, there is a free BBQ from 7-8, and free beer from 9-10. there are also giveaways from Ace Fu Records, Stop Smiling Magazine, and Neighborhoodies making (no, not hoodies!) tee shirts on the spot.
Date: Thursday, October 27th Time: 7:00pm Location: the Delancey (168 Delancey between Clinton and Attorney) Cost: Free
Gala always makes me think of fancy party dresses. Surface Mag always makes me think of stark black suits. Woordford Reserve sponsorship always makes me think of drunken bourbon hooligan activities. Either way, the Avant Guardian is quite a nice representation of high end fashion photography. See and be seen tonight at the opening "gala."
Date: Thursday, October 27th Time: 8:00pm - 11:00pm Location: Splashlight Studios (529 West 35th Street) Cost: Free with RSVP
Wow.. big up to this undisclosed promoter for bringing Baltimore's best - Scottie B - to one of the cities best systems. Plus, its rare that a good throw down at APT has no cover... but this one does... and an open bar from 9-10 of Red Bull and Vodka. If you have been hearing me rant about Baltimore Club music for the last month or so and have not gone out to anything then this is your official popping. Start early and stay late.
Date: Thursday, October 27th Time: 9:00pm Location: APT (419 West 13th Street) Cost: Free
Matt from Pay2Cum has put together a pre holloween throw down tonight. There is an open vodka bar from 12-1 and some sort of keg beer action thing going on. Before and after that you can drink 32oz. Buds for $6 which is really not a big deal because thats just 2 $3 pints in one bottle. I can only expect the music will be a sort of booty shaking houston x baltimore throwdown.
Date: Thursday, October 27t Time: 10:00pm Location: Double Happiness (173 Mott between Broome and Grand) Cost: Free with RSVP
Every once and a while the guys at Troma Films - makers of personal favorites such as Class of Nuke'em High and Cannibal! The Musical - throw a really good party. These boys know fake gore better than Gwar so expect dancing zombies, hula hooping goth girls, and all sorts of bloody suprises at this 50's styled "sock hop" throwdown. Free Energy Vodka and Pabst from 10-11 get you ready for the evening while DJs Jumpin' Jorge Fame and Hollidave Mason provide the soundtrack to this perfect Thursday night jump off. Costumes welcome but not mandatory... DVD givaways... Oh, and did I mention the Tromettes?
Date: Thursday, October 27th Time: 10:00pm Location:Supreme Trading (213 North 8th Street, Williamsburg) Cost: Free
This hot new Friday weekly continues with DJ Lindsay on the decks upstairs and free open bar from 10-11. They layout of this joint is terrible (like putting a really small bar downstairs right at the entrance having some dude work a rope to get down there when there is plenty of room) but I am willing to overlook all of that because the music is great and the free drinks are a nice plus. Okay, enough bitter bastard.
Date: Friday: October 28th Time: 10:00pm Location: 6's & 8's (Stanton and Chrystie) Cost: Free with RSVP
I am not sure I am down with this new $5 Friday policy at Luke and Leroy. But I am just going to list all the free crap you may get if you go here and that should be enough this week... Free 1977 x We tee shirts. Free Etnies swag. Free video (watching). 2 hrs of free beer (drinking). Music from Catchdubs and BluJemz.
Date: Friday, October 28th Time: 11:00pm - 4:00am Location: Luke & Leroy (21 7th Ave at Leroy) Cost: $5 with RSVP
Our friend Moe Choi is at it again. This time forgoing the cover charge and dropping a free vodka open bar. He's joined on the tables by some additional serious party music DJs and it all goes down at Morrisey Park (which used to be Open Air... RIP) This is a great way to strech the use of that sexy vampire costume you have been waiting to rock all month.
Date: Saturday, October 29th Time: 10:00pm Location: Morrisey Park (122 St. Marks Place at Ave A) Cost: Free
Free Halloween parties are few and far between. But Bar 13 is coming to the rescue with free Sparks from 10-12 and Stiffed playing live at midnight. Not a bad stop off in your travels tonight.
Date: Sunday, October 30th Time: 10:00pm Location: Bar 13 (35 East 13th Street) Cost: Free
Maximum Joy is back again this month with free Bacardi (until it runs out) and music from "famed Frenchman Alex from Tokyo.. the famed deep house producer/DJ who grew up in Japan and helped to forge the ties between the house music scene there with that of his homeland. Joining Alex is none other than DJ Spun, the SF legend behind the incredible Rong Music label, not to mention PS1's Warmup DJ Series." This always packs up so early arrival is suggested else you'll be stuck with warm bacardi and strange mixers.
Date: Thursday, November 3rd Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location: Adidas Originals (136 Wooster Street) Cost: Free, bring flyer print out
Nothing says alcoholic like an entire apartment furnished with gin inspired design product. But that's exactly what the folks over at Bombay Sapphire are hoping. The saving grace of this little experimental, temporary shopping experience is that they will be serving free end-of-work cocktails from 5-7 for the next four days (but there is no work on the weekends so who planned this thing?) Other than that... eh? Check the site for more info. Continues through Monday.
Date: Friday, November 4th Time: 5:00pm - 7:00pm Location: Bathhouse (540 East 11h Street between A and B) Cost: Free
Tom Vek is playing tonight with personal local (transplanted) heros The Mobious Band. By the time you read this, however, every hipster review in the city will have told you that and tix will probably be sold out. So enjoy the next best thing, the afterparty. Tom Vek guest DJs which will either be an a amazing surprise or terrible (not that he's a bad musicion - he's a good one - but he's also not a DJ) along with French Kicks, the Shout Out Louds, Specer Product and more. Free Sparks and Tiger from 12 - 1:30 keep you moving at the witching hour.
Date: Friday, November 4th Time: 10:00pm Location: Scenic: 25 Ave B (btw 2nd & 3rd Ave) Cost: Free
Judging by the number of listening parties that have been popping up this week, you would think that there was a shortage of DJs in New York. So instead of going out and hearing DJs live, hit up this party and listen to their latest releases while drowing the awkwardness of a listening party in Red Strip (its wierd enough to stare at a DJ all night, where do you look at a Kodak store while you listen). At least the albums are good, with the latest from Rich Medina, DJ Scribe, OP!, and Shakeyface on the... ur.. CD player. Make sure you check out Scribe Wednesday night at the DubTempo 2 year anniversary party to see what he's all about.
Date: Tuesday, October 8th Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location: Kodak One Gallery (102 Wooster Street) Cost: Free with RSVP
Gina Gold and Elhaam from AdVice join The Vet from a little DJ throwdown tonight at Sway. Good place to be seen and get some free beer from 10 - 11. $2 shots of jack all night to boot
Date: Wednesday, November 9th Time: 10:00pm Location: Sway (305 Spring St. btw Greenwich + Hudson St.) Cost: Free
Tonight is a little birthday bash for King Street Records head honcho Joe B. Joe has been bringing top quality house music to NYC for over a decade now. Tonight, his majesty will grace the tables with a collection of the labels best along with equally knowledgable house heads Jason Hayer and Kenny Summit. Open Bar and Hors d'oeuvres. Free entry when you mention Joe B at the door.
Date: Wednesday, November 9th Time: ??? (10pm?) Location:Stay (244 East Houston Street between 1st and A) Cost: Free
Apparently its going to be a black tie affair tonight at Bang. Also, "it's going to be cool cause cat from fannypack and massimo from evr and motherfucker are DJing and it's baby c (chris bletzer from nylon magazine) birthday..!" Me, I'll be in the same garb I am going to rock at DubTempo later on (aka sans tie). Open Svedka from 10-11
Date: Wednesday, November 9th Time: 10:00pm Location: China 1 (50 Avenue B at 4th Street, downstairs) Cost: Free
The Students for a Free Tibet will be unveiling to consciously produced tee shirt designs at this benefit party tonight. All proceeds from tee sales and from the 'suggested donation' at the door will go directly to SFT. Big ups to SFT for bringing an open bar from 7pm until it runs out from Blue Point, an exceedingly fine beer producer from Long Island. Ge-ology spins long after the free booze are gone at 10pm.
Date: Thursday, November 10th
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Habana Outpost (755 Fulton Street, Ft. Greene)
Cost: Their words: "There is no cover charge. There *is* a suggested
donation of $5 - since we're working to benefit a great cause."
Usually I bypass writing about the Restricted party every week because I have a policy to not hit you over the head with the same weekly time and time again. Especially on a Thursday when there is so much going on. But tonight is their very special three year anniversary at Lit which promises 'cheap thrills' and 'go-go freak out action.' Free Red Stripe from 11 - 12. "Go-go fabulous attire, dancing shoes and substance abuse are suggested."
Date: Thursday, November 10th Time: 11:00pm Location: Lit (93 2nd Ave between 5th and 6th) Cost: Free
If you've got to go out on Friday night, and you've GOT to go out on Friday, At least fill your belly with rock and roll and Sparks. Big hipster DJs Steve Aoki, DJ Elhaam, and DJ Maddens take the tables and free Sparks from 10 - 12.
Date: Friday, November 11th Time: 10:00pm Location: Happy Ending (302 Broome Street) Cost: Free with RSVP
Sonny Ray and Mannimal are back again at a revamped Loreley downstairs lounge. There is new lighting and a new soundsystem to enjoy the old wave, hip hop, and classic records along with free beer from 10-11. We love an open bar with no RSVP hassle

We got some mis-info on this in the beginning... This party has no RSVP but is $5 at the door and you must say "Beautiful Decay Party" else they will charge you $20. Still well worth the cover.
It's Beautiful Decay's issue "M" release party and boy do these guys know how to put a good party together. The obvious is the 2 hour open bar of Steel Reserve (yuck) and Bacardi (yum). The bonus is some serious live performances and DJs. Like Roc Raida (X-ecutioners) live on stage beside Adam Deitch (drummer for Average White Band, Earth, Wind, & Fire, and the Nuyorican). Or Brooklyn's own Noble Society bringing down the heavy reggae vibe.
As for DJs, its kind of a who's who of FreeNYC favorites. Moe Choi and Chasekills combine forces as Robots in a Coma, DJ Synapse is here, as is DJ Gravy. J Smoke from Scratch Academy brings the technical aspect, and the Deck Demons bring the WTF factor with 4 dudes on 5 turntables. See you at the spot!

"Free Guinness, Harp Lager, Molinari Sambuca and Fernet-Branca. If you don't get drunk here, then I'm useless. Lauren Gerrie, an Orange County native, brings her art to this East Village boutique. One piece involves seven different pairs of pants, ranging from vintage denim to khakis, illuminating the question of whether men dress to portray a specific identity, or if their identity informs their dress. Bring your friends, and engage them in this important debate whilst sipping Sambuca shots and twirling your hairs. It will be so classy and chic, yet charmingly eccentric. Just like you." Who is that? Man, I need that record." Thankfully, the free drinks from 9-10 will help our brains lean back into APT's amazing soundsystem and simply enjoy the ride. Morphine Gen, the fashion brand that is trying hard to make the popped polo collar look cool (and doing a pretty good job of it) are releasing a denim line. This, of course, is cause for celebration in a venue which sports a giant crotch and cages for women to dance in. It also sports (what I can only assume are free) "tropical drinks and filthy party action." Maybe this joint is not so bad on a Tuesday. You'll never find out if you don't go. [found on Sh*tparade]

Up until now, I have avoided hammering you with my love for Monkey Town - the experimental perfomance/video/restaurant that reopened just about 6 months ago. To be honest, the food - while affordable and fantastic - is not cheap so I feel wierd sending you to a free film screening to have you drop $50 on dinner for 2. But tonight they are doing something a bit different with a Kill Rock Stars album release party for the emo-electronic-ambient-folk band Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice. There will be an album listening, videos on the wall, and free Red Stripe while it lasts. This is a great chance to check out the space. Full menu also served (go for the fennel salad and short ribs!)

Former Andy Warhol film star Ivy Nicholson will be celebrating her birthday at the swanky euro-frequented posh uptown champagne bar Club Fizz. Free bellini's sound quite enticing and I am always looking for a reason to get all donned up for the evening (dress is semi formal, jackets for men, no sneakers, no "do-rags"). Great spot to impress a date and make her forget that you are collecting unemployment, sitting home, writing a blog about free crap.
Date: Thursday, February 21st Time: 10:00pm Location: Club Fizz (137 East 55th St. at Lexington) Cost: Free with RSVP
Due to my recent travels I have come to really appreciate a good hotel shop. So when this lil store opened up in the Hotel Rivington and then Trace decided to throw a little cocktail party in their honor, I realized this has got to be a top notch hotel shop. Annie O was described by Daily Candy as a "gift shop-cum-designer boutique that provides all the staples you’d expect (Visine, toothpaste, condoms, Nat Shermans) along with those you wouldn’t: French toiletries, Yosh perfumes, Shy cosmetics, Floris candles, and Paul Labrecque shower stuff." So right now you are probably thinking to yourself "why would I go here, since A, I live in the city, and B, it sounds pricey?" Well how about 2 hours of free cocktails. Yeah thats what I thought! Now go get tipsy, then brush your teeth, put visine in your bloody shot eyes and graba condom for the road!
Date: Wednesday, February 22nd Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm Location: Annie O at the Hotel Rivington, 105 Rivington Street Cost: Free with RSVP

"Ezra Reich has been steadily spreading his joyous pop confections to fans who are taking notice from New York to London, Paris to Los Angeles. A New York native, Reich's 'New Wave Cabaret' has been compared to a contemporary mix of David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, The Cars, Roy Orbison, Talking Heads, and a smattering of Prince and the Ronnettes. His visual imagery and style are informed as much by the cinema of David Lynch as the paintings of James Rosenquist and the photography of Helmut Newton. In the spring of 2003 Ezra finished his first album, "Freeze the Night". Ezra Reich spent much of 2004 working on tracks for his second album "Milkshake Arcade" with co-producer Ron A. Shaffer (Ambulance Ltd., Tricky) at Atlantic West Studios in Brooklyn. Most recently Ezra Reich toured the UK for the end of 2005 and Ezra is back in the studio since the beginning of 2006 creating songs for his next album."
