Twelfth Night, Or What You Will: The Drinking Game
The Legitimate Theater Company presents Twelfth Night, Or What You Will: The Drinking Game. This is Shakespeare as it is meant to be: fun, fast, loose, and buzzed. Through the drinking game audiences will find themselves immediately drawn into the world of Shakespeare's classic comedy as they join the festivities. The actors will sit with, drink with, and directly engage the spectators as they perform the Bard’s tale of shipwrecked twins lost in a strange world. The play's themes of stasis confronting inevitable change, of morality colliding with hedonism, of sexuality and it's ambiguities, are delightfully underlined by this unique production. 917 856 3535 for inquiries. More on Legitimate Theatre Company after the fold. [found via NonSenseNYC]

The Legitimate Theater Company's mission is to create theater that is ego-less and rough in order to reach a cynical public: Those who are both tired of pop culture and skeptical of high art. We strive for a kind of theater that does not try to trick, impress, or convert people. Instead, our aim is to laugh with our audiences as we offer ideas for them to take or leave, and to create a sense of camaraderie with them in our collective search for identity, belief, and conviction.

"April Fool's day has always been a day for mayhem and practical jokes. So don't forget your fake vomit, exploding bubble gum and pull-my-finger jokes. After much deliberation in the Clown Council, it has been concluded that the place a clown is needed the most is a Yuppie Midtown Sports Bar. So that is where we will have our uprising.
Special Note: If at anytime during the uprising, someone asks who is in charge say "the clown" and if they ask why we are there say "clowns". It is important that we be vague and smart as no permits have been acquired. So no blocking traffic or public drinking. We will strut together and if our clown-shoes are tired we can take the train, but either way I expect a royal rumpus all through the night.
Date: Friday, April 1st Time: 8:00pm Venue: Meet at the Carousel at Bryant Park Cost: Free
Just a friendly reminder to change all your clocks and watches tonight for daylight savings. For the record, I am very upset about this as I will be losing a crucial drinking hour Saturday night at 2am (technically Sunday). But you know, what's good for the gander...

I am always excited when someone takes the initiative to create a unique experience in New York City (that's what being here is all about, right). And I am not talking about bringing a really cool dj to a really cool new bar. I am talking about you won't find anywhere else on the planet and - perhaps - something that will not happen here again for a while.
Enter Improv Everywhere; a group of individuals dedicated to bringing improptu events and performances to public spaces such as "No Pants 2K5" where everyone on the subway car was (duh?) without pants. Well, rain be damned, today is their next public extravaganza. Titled The MP3 Experiment 2.0, Improve Everywhere is inviting you to join in the fun. Here's what you need to do...
Go to the website. Download the mp3. Load it into your mp3 player of choice (if you are reading this website, you probably have an iPod but may be considering buying a nano for this special occasion because "everyone is going to have iPods." Mine's broken so I rock a CD player... sorry, I'm bitter... back to the saga). Okay, don't be lame and listen to it ahead of time. That is going to take all the fun away.
Now, Show up at Sheep Meadow and be there by 3pm. Sit on the lawn (important... bring something to sit on as it will still be soaked). There will be a guy with a siren. Once you hear the siren, get your mp3 player of choice fired up. when you here the siren again... hit play and follow the instructions. Madness is guaranteed to ensue.
Since we have been engulfed in Monsoon Manhattan for the past week, the rain date for this event is Sunday and you can check the site today as they will post a "good to go" message by 1pm. Enjoy!
Date: Saturday, October 15th Time: 3:00pm (prompt) Location: Sheep Meadow, Central Park (Enter the [ark at 72nd St and Central Park West. Go south. Sheep Meadow is located on the east side of the West Drive at 67th St) Cost: Free

This kind of stuff only happens in New York.. "Times Square Alliance is proud to present the first annual Times Square Dog Day Masquerade. Dogs will compete in three categories: Historical Hounds (costumes featuring historical figures from Times Square such as the VJ Day Sailor and Nurse, Ladies of the night or a street preacher); Current Canine Characters (current characters that populate Times Square like the Naked Cowboy, tourists or New Years Eve celebrants); and Broadway Bow-Wows (Broadway diva dogs and other theatre impresarios and characters such as Billy Flynn, Phantom of the Opera, or Cats)." See site for full info.

Every once in a while, NYU does something really cool. Today they are hosting Handheld, a sort of lecture/exhibition on experimental uses of handheld technology. Most important to me, as I was out of town a few weeks back, is the fact that Improv Everywhere will be on hand with another MP3 Experiment. For those of you who missed out on the rainy park fun now is your chance to get on it. So download the mp3 (no pre-listening) load it into your ipod and bring it along. All at once, we will press play and enjoy the ride... together. This will probably be the last MP3 experiment until warmer days so don't sleep.

Any press release that comes across my virtual desk with the phrase "Come for the puppets and stay for the restoration of the Zombie Slut Princess’s rightful crown!" is okay by me. I am a little skeptical of a "free" fundraiser but who knows...
So tonight is a fundraiser at the Read for "Jack and the Beanstalk:
A new musical with puppets by Natalie Weiss." There is a sneak peak at the show (puppets!), an "ultra-competitive" zombie costume contest, art, djs, open air market, nypho kissing booth, bake sale, $3 beers, and "Hot Girls playing vibraphones and accordions." Talk about an after work extravaganza.

Um... Okay... "The folks at D&S Knitwear are crafting plans for all Hallows Eve. We're opening up all 3500 sq feet of the loft plus the roof deck for an unholy evening of drinking and debauchery. We have NO COVER this time, but if liquor does you better than wine or that luscious local Brooklyn brew, feel free provide, we'll give you the ice. Costumes are strongly encouraged, since those who cannot find the spirit of this most sacred of nights, but come to drink our booze anyway, will be punished through taunting and ridicule.

cancelled. Alternate refreshments will be provided.

Graveyard Games is my latest post related to psychogeography. Think along the veins of recent good times such as the MP3 Experiment or Zombicon. This time, its Tombstone Texas Hold 'em out in a Brooklyn Cemetary. Its a short, one hour game and you'll need to bring a flower to show that you are here to play. Check out more photos here or read the full instructions below the fold.
1. Arrive at the Main Gate of the Cypress Hills Cemetery (833 Jamaica Ave), near where Jamaica Ave meets Cypress Hills Street, between 2 PM and 2:30 PM local time.
2. Look for the tournament's host. She'll be holding a deck of cards and will have further instructions and supplies for you.
3. Bring a single flower to place on a grave to show some respect, and to signal that you're one of us.
4. Take a few minutes to explore your section of the cemetery. Look for any poker chips left on tombstones. You'll need these to play.
5. Be sure to look for the grave of someone you can prove died on your birthday. You can use that tombstone as a Joker during the game.
6. Tournament begins at 2:30 PM. Learn the rules (http://www.lastcallpoker.com/allin/rules.aspx) before you come if you're serious about winning. We’ll have extra instructions on hands for any friends you bring along.
7. The winner is crowned at 3:30 PM. No fancy prizes, but lots of respect and maybe a special memento from Lucky's estate. And everyone can keep the chips they earn as a souvenir.
8. Afterwards, you’re invited to nearby Mike’s Pub (7919 Jamaica Ave) to raise a glass to the players you’re leaving underground at Cypress Hills.
As McCarren Park pool slowly reverts from graffiti outlaw sanctuary back into public use, there are only a few more chances to commodify the space in all its ghetto glory. Enjoy a radio broadcast tour of the secret insides of the pool today along with a quiet dance party b DJ Mike O'Conner to follow. Bring along a walkman and headphones if you have it but there may be some provided.

So by blood I'm Jewish, but by practice I'm more like jew-ish. My question here is, is it wrong that I love christmas trees? When I was a kid I would kvetch about it and sometimes my parents would give in and buy me a "Hanukkah bush." Now, every year my roommate and I toy with the idea of getting a tree and then we realize our delinquent cats would tear that thing apart and decide against it. So finally someone has solved all of my holiday problems. Fix, on Bedford ave. in the 'burg, is getting a holiday tree in celebration of celebration of my very favorite holiday "Christmas-Saturnalia-Kwanza-Winter Solstice-Hanukkah. Bring your own ornament or better yet come and make one. We will have the tree, lights, tinsel and supplies for making ornaments. Carafes of Egg nog, Grog, and other festive holiday drink specials." Super fun Tuesday night activity!

Uh, sometimes things come through to us that I need to decode in order to decipher some sort of event out of, however this one speaks for itself...
"Mustaches for Kids, New York's favorite (and quite possibly only holiday-season mustache-growing charity concludes its follicular fundraiser with the 2005 Sweetest Stache Competition. This event is the jewel in the mustache crown -- a cross between a beauty pageant, costume ball, and police line-up.
For the past four weeks, participants ("Growers") have been raising money for the Children's Hospital of New Orleans by growing sweet, sweet mustaches. They have suffered indignities, climbed whisker mountains, and resisted the temptations of the razor. On December 15, our 40-plus Growers will assemble to participate in a grueling competition, which will include the all-important Beer Foam Retention Test, the How Does It Feel? tactile challenge, and several other rounds designed to identify the one man who will proudly wear the crown and sash of the Mustache King of New York. Our Growers will be judged by their peers, using scrupulously developed criteria and
mustache expertise." [swiped from NonsenseNYC]

Today is the day that pudgy, woodland creature pops its head out of a hole in the ground and lets me know whether I will get to snowboard for another six weeks or not. And well, given the fact that it was 60 degrees on Monday, the future of my east coast riding is looking grim.
Besides the whole rodent thing, today is also your founder-publisher-writer-designer-extraordinaire Chris' Birthday. That's right kids, 27 years ago today, Chris' Momma gave birth to this crazy middle child that we have all come to know and love. So raise your glasses (stop drinking on the job, gawd what lushes!) and wish Chris a Happy Birthday!
"Are you one of those people who relished those assignments in elementary school that required you to create a diorama? Do you see a shoe box as the setting for a whole new world? Do you miss the taste of paste or are you a hot shot with a glue gun? Do you save boxes of junk in case someday you might make something out it?
Join...Diorama Lodge if you have a hankering for liquor-fueled arts and crafts. [The are] are a group that sits around making dioramas and
marveling at our own creations. The theme will be announced on the night of and there will be one first prize, voted on by all the creators (and drinkers) that show up. Bring your own shoebox plus glue, found objects, foil, toothpicks, craft store doo-dads, string, cotton balls, cake toppers, general junk, and inspiration. Bring stuff for your own diorama -- but you are also strongly encouraged to bring stuff to share with the communal stew of diorama ingredients. (Note: We will be required to clean up after ourselves.)"

Leave it to the people over at newmindspace to come up with this one. They have given us Capture the Flag games, SUbway Parties, and now Pillow Fights. "Feathers fly and teddies soar as you converge on Union Square for a massive urban pillow fight! Swing and whack as you evade pillow-wielding assailants on E 14th St. Bring a pillow to the square at 2 PM and wait for the signal. Pillow fight!" Now while I would prefer it be a tad bit warmer for said pillow fight, the down filled sacks will fly come rain (or snow) or shine. And the rules state "Soft pillows only! Swing lightly, many people will be swinging at once. Do not swing at people without pillows or with cameras. Remove glasses beforehand!"

Date: Saturday, March 25th Time: 7:00pm Location: Orchid Lounge (500 East 11th bet A & B) Cost: Free Summary:Nerd Nite travels south of Boston for their first ever NYC evening. Intelligent speakers discuss a variety of issues from iconography in Michael Jackson videos to the parasitic stylings of Cameroon's indigo bird through a laid back, alcohol fueled evening. I am sure there will be music of some sort as well... Speaker topics after the jump.
"After running amuck in Boston for the last three years, Nerd Nite makes its NYC debut on Saturday. So what exactly is Nerd Nite? Nerd Nite is an informal gathering (with drinks, of course) at which nerds get together for nerdery of all sorts. On Saturday March 25, the nerdery will specifically focus on three 15-minute lectures (geared toward us common folk) given by the big-brained JC Dwyer, Nora Morrison, and Dr. Chris Balakrishnan (founder of Nerd Nite). Dwyer, Morrison, and Balakrishnan will share their expertise in the varied topics of food access and nutritional extremes in East Harlem (yum), iconography in Michael Jackson videos (woo), and the bizarre parasitic stylings of Cameroon's indigo bird (chirp), respectively, while the audience drinks along and learns a little something too. And after longing to get back behind the mic, yours truly [Matt Wasowski] will host the festivities.
Hunger and Obesity in East Harlem: How Food Access Predicts Nutritional Extremes by JC Dwyer
Imagine Fat Albert and a malnourished Ethiopian sharing a slice on the corner. Sound absurd? Hunger and obesity are this close in many communities, and there's an environmental explanation why.
The Iconography of Michael Jackson by Nora Morrison
Before Michael Jackson was an object of ridicule and pop psychological (and even attempted physical) dissection, he was a singer, dancer, actor, and illusionist. Nora will talk about what Michael may have meant to say before he lost control of his public image.
The Indigo Bird: One Crazy-Ass Homewrecker of a Parasitic Bird by Dr. Chris Balakrishnan
Female indigo birds choose mates based on their mimicry of host song and then parasitize nests of the species that reared them. Yep, they’re just like the crazy hot girl who’s subletting your apartment. Watch out! -by the way, I made up Chris’s blurb (he never gave me his so I improvised).. but it’s close enough to what he’ll actually be talking about."
