On the line up tonight is Intervals by Peter Greenaway, Roma by Jacob Burckhardt, Nettezza Urbana by Michelangelo Antonioni, The Assignation by Curtis Harrington, Travel Song: Italy by Jonas Mekas, Bambini in Citta by Luigi Comencini.

Hello Ginga
First I received the above cryptic flyer with some image that looks like its pulled from the Cevaleiro Marginal opening this weekend at Deitch. Thankfully, Josh Rubin has come to the rescue with a fantastic synopsis of the film.
"I wish all documentary filmmakers could rock Nikes to make films, but this time around, it’s a Brazilian story being told. In the vein of last spring’s Art of Speed film collaborations, tonight RES presents a screening and event of the Nike-sponsored documentary film about Ginga (loosely translates to “art of movement”) and the sport of futebol in Brazil. Executive produced by Fernando Meirelles, the director of the incredible film City of God, the film highlights futebol players at both the local and national level in Brazil, and captures six different players, in different regions and in various arenas of play all around the Brazilian wonderland – the beach, the street, the sandlot. The film is about an hour long, directed by Hank Levine, Tocha Alves, and Marcelo Machado from O2 Films. Meirelles rhapsodizes, "Ginga is the Brazilian secret ingredient to the world’s most beautiful game.” The film is currently awaiting wider distribution, unless you're lucky enough to catch it at one of these special RES/Nike events.
Nike’s inspiration is this je ne sais quoi of Brazilian people – which they have capped with the term Ginga - for infusion into their global spring sportswear collection, in addition to several smaller retail spin-offs, such as three different colorwaves for Nikeid.com shoppers (for use in customizing the Dunk, Presto, and Zoom FC). The line will feature graphics designed by the Aprendiz School in Sao Paulo, and 1950s Copcabana-inspired apparel from the Brazillian fashion designer Jum Nakao. The graffiti celebrities Os Gemeos have created work for display at the afterparty, in a continuing relationship with the shoe company we love to hate (on). (OG have created public works for Nike in Los Angeles in the past, and they are designing a shoe as part of the Ginga thing). I guess there's nothing left to do but - Ginga!" by Ranjani Gopalarathinam on 10 March 05 for Cool Hunting.

Tonight, get in at no cost as part of the museum's Free Friday Nights, then grab a ticket to the screening of Best In Show which will be introduced by the films director, Christopher Guest. I'd line up early for tickets as they are sure to go quick!

Brazilian Arts & Film Festival - Day 1
The Brazilian Film Festival Of New York kicks off its third year with two special nights at SummerStage. The festival will present a week and a half of great new films from one of cinema’s most vibrant creative communities.
Opening night on Friday, July 8 begins with a performance from Brazilian rapper Gabriel O Pensador. One of the most popular (and controversial) rappers in Brazilian hip-hop, Gabriel Contino, a.k.a. “Gabriel the Thinker,” first emerged in during the early ‘90s with songs that mixed pop production with witty and caustic observations of Rio’s wealthy youth subculture. Gabriel’s performance will be followed by Maria’s Place (Bendito O Fruto) from director Sergio Goldenberg. An accident involving a flying manhole cover leads to a chance reunion between two childhood friends—one a widow, the other the owner of a beauty parlor. Thus begins an entertaining game of seduction that brings memories and hidden desires to the surface - furtive passions that end up threatening the hairdresser’s de facto marriage.

Brazilian Arts & Film Festival - Day 2
The Brazilian Film Festival Of New York kicks off its third year with two special nights at SummerStage. The festival will present a week and a half of great new films from one of cinema’s most vibrant creative communities.
Under the direction of its late front man Chico Science, Nação Zumbi was one of the first bands to pioneer the mangue beat in the early ‘90s. Basically an embrace of all things contemporary, mangue beat bands incorporate hip-hop, funk, British acid rock, free jazz and much more into more traditional forms of Brazilian music. The Owner of History (A Dona da Historia), directed by Daniel Filho, is the compelling vision of a middle-aged woman who confronts her younger self, reliving her past and discovering what direction her life might have taken.

Wener Herzog Speaks
"In his mesmerizing new documentary, Grizzly Man, acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and violent death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen summers and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were killed by a grizzly near their campsite in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Reserve. In Grizzly Man, Herzog explores the larger questions about the uneasy relationship between man and nature as he chronicles Treadwell's final years in the wilderness. A discussion with director Werner Herzog, co-executive producer Jewel Palovak, and renowned grizzly expert/wildlife biologist Barrie Gilbert, moderated by WNYC Studio 360 host Kurt Andersen, will take place immediately after the screening.

Dig In

So I am still writing about films here, but at least I can give you one that is not about hip hop... Tonight, catch a screening of the film Dig!. "DIG! follows the talented underground musicians Anton Newcombe, leader of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Courtney Taylor, head of The Dandy Warhols star-crossed friends and bitter rivals. From the moment they met Anton Newcombe and Courtney Taylor quickly bonded over a desire to not conform to the tastes of the recording industry. Yet the musicians' choices over how to express their creativity and originality in a profit-driven industry eventually put them at irreconcilable odds. Shot over seven years and culled from 1,500 hours of footage, DIG! is about both musicians' love and obsession, gigs and recordings, arrests and death threats, uppers and downers, and their choice between art and industry." Evil City Film Festival

"The Evil City Film Fest begins its inaugural foray with an attempt to become an event synonymous with its locale. NYC's East Village has long been home to artists, filmmakers and musicians alike, dedicated to interpreting the attitude and atmosphere of city life. The goal of the Evil City is to celebrate this world of city life. Though NY's perspective is surely welcome, this festival is not merely for New York filmmakers; we encourage films from other cities, US and international, that celebrate life in the city." Manhattan Short Film Festival
The Manhattan Short Film Festival has been a ritual for me ever since I lived in a cockroach infested dorm on 18th street and Union Square West (they tell me it is much cleaner now). Each year, the festival travels to all across the USA asking viewers to pick the "most creative film" out of over 504 entries. Tonight, the 12 final films will be screened and the winners will be announced. It all goes down in Union Square park for free. Early arrival is suggested but there will be music and interviews beforehand. Paper bags or opaque Arizona bottles also suggested.

La Strada

Usually I don't go for Fellini movies. I fell asleep in 8.5 about 4 times and it took me 3 sittings to get through Satyricon. But La Strada is something different. It is a battered love tale of a strong man circus performer and the abusive relationship with his purchased bride. It is, to me, Fellini at his best touching on man's inability to connect, struggle for love and independance, and need for companionship all tangled up in beautifully framed scenes and amazing acting. If you have not seen this film, catch it tonight for free or at least Netflix it.

On Screen at Bauplatz
You may have walked by Bauplatz a million times and not even realized it was there. It’s the little, gravel-filled, open-air space just off Bedford that has sporadically opened its doors to music performances where the sounds come out of hanging gourds and to Sunday night screenings of high quality cinema projected onto concrete walls. The space was dreamed for such sundries. It has modular elements that allow each night to have a setup of its own. (It also has a food cart from which a chef makes cuisine that dabbles in New York corner kebab, Argentinean barbecue and Thai street food.) Tonight begins On Screen, their last weekend of events in their inaugural year. On Screen features the video art installations by Amanda Anderson, Cristina Hernandez-Botero, Julien ourdes, Julian Lwin, Marta Lwin, Werner Morath, Sharpy, Mariko anaka and Jurate Veceraite. Cocoa Cracker Brown accompanies the nstallations with a DJ set.

Sometimes Girl Trouble, Often Justice Trouble

Tonight see Lexi Leban and Lidia Szajko's award-winning documentary, Girl Trouble. The film shows "the disastrous consequences of poverty, domesetic violence, drug addictions, and homelessness" for teenage girls today who have ended up in the juvenile justice system. Seems like girl trouble to me. Not only will you get a critical look at the the juvenile justice system through the documentary lens of Leban and Szajko, but you'll also get to hear Stephanie Sabini and Marlene Sanchez from the the Center for Young Women's Development talk about girl trouble.

Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic

"Sarah Silverman is known as one of the funniest and most provocative people in comedy. Despite the current political climate, in JESUS IS MAGIC she takes on such pitch-black topics as September 11th, unwanted body hair, and the Holocaust, and spins them into decidedly un-politically correct comedic gold. The film comprises Silverman's performance before a live audience interwoven with stylish musical numbers and backstage intrigue. Bob Odenkirk, Brian Posehn and Silverman's comedian/actor sister, Laura Silverman, make appearances along with Silverman's band The Silver Men." It all goes down for free tonight at Galapagos as part of the Sneak Peak 35mm series.

Date Movie - Free Screening

We've got the inside scoop on a couple great free film screenings coming up over the next few weeks. Tonight's is "Date Movie," a hilarious spoof on romantic comedies such as Meet The Parents, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Wedding Planner, and My Best Friend’s Wedding. The twisted minds of two of the six screenwriters behind Scary Movie this time skewer the romantic comedy genre. The new film tells the story of hopeless romantic Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan), who has finally met the man of her dreams, the very British Grant Fuckyerdoder. But before they can have their “Big Fat Greek Wedding,” they’ll have to “Meet the Parents;” hook-up with “The Wedding Planner,” and contend with Grant’s friend Andy-a spectacularly beautiful woman who wants to put an end to her “Best Friend’s Wedding.”

Tons of Tim Burton Love

My opening comment on this one is "better late than never!" If you have some time to spare this weekend I recommend you head downtown to the Tribeca Cinemas' Gallery. The electricity company, Rita, the neighbor, Ulises, a pizza deliveryman, eleven seconds, the Real Madrid-Manchester game, some chocolate brownies and a horrible painting of ducks, all combine to break the harmony of what promised to be a placid Sunday, and reveal issues such as the parents' divorce, loneliness, the confusion between adolescent love and friendship, as well as frustration in adult life. About "The Andy Milonakis Show"
The Andy Milonakis Show is an absurd comedy centered on young Andy, stuck at home in his apartment on New York's Lower East Side. In his spare time, Andy makes this strange show comprised of surreal short films starring himself, his dog, his neighbors, and various inanimate objects. Andy Milonakis raps, sings, dances, and is eager to live up to Jimmy Kimmel's prediction that he will become the next Sammy Davis Jr.
About "Wonder Showzen"
Wonder Showzen is an absurdist comedy/variety show, spiked with a team of puppets, kids, cartoons and old educational films. Remember all those Saturday mornings you spent in front of the tube in your jammies? Well, Wonder Showzen takes your favorite things about watching TV as a kid and turns them into a twisted nightmare. Look out for skits from main puppets (Chauncey, Wordsmith, Sthugar, and Him), news segments from A.P. Gibralter, and Clarence's "puppet on the street" skit. Think delightfully darky yet smartly subversive.

From the moment David Brower first witnessed the extraordinary beauty of the Yosemite Valley, his life was tied to the fight to preserve the American wilds for future generations. Not since John Muir had an American fought so hard, or been more successful, in protecting our natural heritage. His fiery dedication and activism helped inspire the modern day environmental movement.
Explored in Monumental is the beautiful, dramatic, and lyrical story of Brower and his colleagues' unrelenting campaigns - fought through lobbying, art, and hard hitting advertising- to protect and establish some of our most treasured national parks. At the center of the film are the themes that absorbed Brower throughout his life: the threatened beauty of the American earth, the spiritual connection between humans and the great outdoors, and the moral obligation to preserve what is left of the world's natural wonders.Monumental tells the story of a true American legend, an artist, a publisher, a filmmaker and an zealous crusader for the cause of environmentalism. The film combines the 1950s and '60s aesthetic of archival footage with a modern look and recent interviews for a visually compelling experience that anyone can enjoy, whether young or old, activism neophyte or diehard environmentalist.
