Mayday 2005

I have been to this event for the past four or five years and I can honestly say that its the best way to kick off the summer. Sadly I will not be able to amke it this year, so I expect you all to go to the 19th annual Mayday celebration in Tompkins Square Park and report back to me on all the fun I have missed. If you have never been, here are a few things you need to know. A, there are always a slew of great DJs (this years line up hasn't been posted yet but in the past they have included Afrika Bamabaataa, DJ Red Alert, Frankie Bones, Lenny Dee, Carlos Soulslinger). B, expect a big semi-rowdy crowd as its one of the first days everyone has left their houses for the summer, and come on now, how oftern do you get to dance with hundreds of people in a park. And C, don't be scared away by the heavy police presence (please see previous statement if you need an explination), generally if you leave them alone, they leave you alone.

For more information check out Blackkat If you want to get involed the folks over there say "We are currently soliciting Circus performers, artists, performers, vendors, political organizations, body-painters, acrobats, clowns, break-dancers, etc. to take parthttp in the festivities. We are also looking for volunteers that can help with promotions, flyering, set up, take down, fundraising and other organizational aspects of this event. Lets make this event belong to everyone!"

**Here is an update about this event...Due to some issues with permits from the Parks Department, there will not be a stage this year, and they may have less equipment than normal, but the show WILL go on! This years line up will include MC Baba Isreal (Live Hip Hop) The Kin (Live Rock Band)DJ Chrome (Drum-n-bass), plus performances by Missy Galore, Groovehoops, and others.**

Bicycle This, Bicycle That - Friday

I have gotten approximately 1,436 emails this week that contain the words "Bicycle Film Festival". Now unfortunatly, like most film festivals, it costs money. If you want more info though, click here. Otherwise, for the rest of us there are a bunch of events happening over the weekend associated with it that don't cost a thing.

Tonight's festival after party will be at LES hot spot Eleven. Now normally I try to avoided super packed bars like the plague, but tonight one of my very favorite DJs, Blockhead, is spinning so that policy may got right out the window. Also provinding you with music will be Small Change, Pork Chop and Ted Shred. And there is some free beer at 10.

Date: Friday, May 13th
Time: 10pm
Location: Eleven, Orchard and Rivington
Cost: Free (you may need to mention the film fest to be comp-ed)

A$$ & T!TT!ES

Titty Side May Email.jpg

Once upon a time in NYC (okay, this past winter) there was a party called Bangers & Mash that the FreeNYC crew simply would not miss. We were thrilled that grime had come to New York and took total advantage of it. Sure, we got a little rowdy, probably a bit out of hand, but we never hurt no one. So we don't think it was our fault that the party stopped but we were sad to see it go.

But now Vito Fun, Drop The Lime, and the rest of the crew are back with a new party, Ass & Titties. Expect a more extended range of crunked up breaks from Miami Bass to Drill and Bass but the same great vibe and drunken FreeNYC gang foolery.

I am always on the lookout for a new place to waste away my Friday evening. Dude, Where's My Scene

So once upon a time, way back in the day, we'll call it like late 90's ish, I used to go these "parties" at these random, shady ass spots in Brooklyn or Manhattan or in Philly for that matter, and listen to all sorts of electronic music and dance 'til the wee hours of the morn'. I mean we would hear the likes of Frankie Bones, Adam X, DB, Odi, Gonzo, Oddysey, Vandal, etc. Wait...what's this flyer I have here? It appears there is a crazy old school party at some random spot in BK with the aforementioned DJs, and get this, it is FREE (with RSVP) Wait I'm confused, what year is it?

PS1 Warm-Up: Hans Peter Lindstrom & Prins Thomas

Hans-P4
[stolen straight from Flavorpill cuz we know nothing about these guys and they write better than we do...]

Hans-Peter Lindstrom and remix wizard Prins Thomas are purveyors of a mutant strain of Nordic disco known for its highly psychedelic properties (Lindstrom's oddly-titled EP There's a Drink in My Bedroom and I Need a Hot Lady sounds like an undiscovered Can outtake). The two recently applied their wide-reaching backgrounds — touching on punk, gospel, folk, and psychedelia — to a series of productions for the likes of the Juan Maclean, LCD Soundsystem, and Brennan Green. Tonight's live set tweaks this colorful, kaleidoscopic range of references and wraps it together nicely atop a thick 4/4 groove.

Date: Saturday, July 9th
Time: 3:00pm - 9:00pm
Venue: PS1 (22-25 Jackson Ave, LIC)

Get deep with Derrick May

Thumb 07-05 Back
Okay, this costs $5 buck but its worth it. Deep Space is (in my opinion) the best dance party in the city. Its too bad that it is on Monday nights and runs late because that means my 9-5 ass can't go that often. But tonight, the best party in the city brings a very special guest to the plates... One of the fathers of Techno himself, Derrick May. How deep can Derrick go? And what happens when a Techno legend shares decks with New York house legend Francois K? Only tonight will tell.

Deadbeat and Beat Pharmacy

1218.jpg

Boy, this is one of my personal favorites for the weekend. Beat Pharmacy is the first artist on Francois K's Wave label. He produced a sort of deep house / electro dub sound that you can get down to in a really deep way if you are feeling it. Plus, anyone with a song called "keef" makes me happy. I can only imagine that Deadbeat will create an equally interesting show.

"Deadbeat and Beat Pharmacy are the two best electronic dub-makers in he world. Beat Pharmacy, a cohort and labelmate of Francois K, leans more toward the psychedelic and deep side of the genre; while Deadbeat from the German label ~scape (Jan Jelinek, Akufen) goes more for the techy side. For those that don’t know these guys, don’t worry. Dub in this context shouldn’t bring images of sleepy sidestepping. Their music is full of echoing energy. This will be a great party." 28 year old Sri Lanken MIA combined third world revolutionary lyrics with a feel good mix of mash-up, baile funk, garage, and hip hop. Her lives shows are constantly high energy and a good time. Diplo is supposed to join in the fun today but - being that he bailed on both of his last SOB's performances with her as well as his Rothko aftershow - we are bitter and have little faith. DJ Rekha (Mutiny Sounds), however, will be in the house. The hipsters will be lined up around the block for this one so get there early and save me a spot on line!

Quiet Disco

I love the folks over at Blackkat, because not only do they know how to throw a great party, but they do crazy things like this... You know when your riding the subway and people are just rockin' out to whatever they are listening to on their iPods, and you can't help but giggle just a little. Well picture how funny it would be do see a park full of people doing this (only I reccomend that this time you are the one shakin' it). This weekend Blackkat will bring DJs Rench, Arrow Chrome, PorkChop, Ron Ray Gun, and others to McCarren Park and transmit what they are playing to headphones, so you will be able to hear the music, but passers-by won't. The fun continues all afternoon, and expect a super soaker attack and possibly a BBQ.

Date: Saturday, August 13th
Time: 3pm - 10pm
Location: McCarren Park, N. 12th and Bedford Ave (they will be set up on the north end of the park)
Cost: Free (there is a $20 deposit for the headphones, but it is returned as soon as you bring the headphones back)

Like killling two birds with one stone, the world famous Thrift On! party at Botanica Bar quells two hipster passions with one night of swapping and spinning. Clean out your apartment (closet and otherwise), bring your loot to the Thrift On! rummage tables, and hopefully you'll walk away with something better. Or enter the free raffle for other people's previously owned stuff. There is no cover and DJ shakey and man "S" spin second-hand records all night.

DubWar

This event has all of my favorite musical keywords in it like dub, sub-base, echo, and skyscraper. Okay, skyscraper is not in there but its my favorite word. Lets see if the local boys can hold it down with DubWar tonight (which is, as far as I can tell, the only dubstep party in NYC) "What is dubstep??? For the uninitiated, dubstep has its roots in dubwise UK garage, but the fast-evolving sound has morphed deeper and deeper into dread territory recently. Combining elements of drum n bass, grime, dub, dancehall, and techno, dubstep has been making waves this year following the seminal "Grime" compilations on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label, as well as the forward-thinking productions of artists like the Digital Mystikz, Loefah, Kode 9 and Skream. Uncompromising sub-bass, spaced out dub echoes, and twisted dancehall riddims combine to make dubstep the music of choice for the future-minded." Still unsure... grab a sound bite here.

Sometimes You Just Trust a DJ

DJSpooky+AmiriBaraka.jpg

Every once and a while there is an event that makes me love New York City. Take this for example...

Start with the Whitney, which is showing a fantastic photographic exhibit portraying the effects of the construction industy on the American landscape. Next add DJ Spooky, the genre-free NY native who's turntables are more aligned with delivering deep narratives of hazy beats rather thank epic dance-floor peaks. Now put them together and you have my ideal transition from work week to week end. I mean, I have no idea what its going to soundlike but sometimes you just trust a DJ.

As part of the pay-what-you-wish Friday evening Whitney Live series, DJ Spooky will joint "avant-rock trio PRINT" and "brass collective Tilt" to recast works from experimental modernist composers - and electronic music pioneers - Edgar Varèse, Carl Ruggles, and Carlos Salzedo (International Composers Guild).

Here 20 minutes from DJ Spooky's Abstrakt Blockback (real)

Date: Friday, October 7th
Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Cutting Back

Every year as the chill comes back to the air, I tend to notice the considerable beer gut I have built up during an entire summer of binge drinking at BBQs. Every weekend I say "this weekend I'm staying in" but then Friday rolls around and out I go. So its looking like I'm going to have to put off sobriety for another weekend as FreeNYC's favorite party returns tonight. Cut is back! In its new home at 6's & 8's and teamed up with XLR8R magazine, they've got DJ Funk, Stretch Armstrong and The Syrup Girls on the line up. Let the fun begin!
