This is the first weekend of the Feast of the Giglio, a two week long street festival in Williamsburg to commemorate San Paolino's return from slavery after trading his own life for those of the people of Nola. You can learn thge full history - and it's a good one - here, or just come out for the old Italian street fair tradition. There are also special Masses and events throughout the week which can all be found in the program. The feast, of course, culminates with the Dance of the Giglio on July 13th.
This is the third installment of New Release’s listening sessions at the 5C café with jazz know-it-all Bruce Morris. This time his subject is Larry Young—the John Coltrane of the organ in the 1960s. Pianist Brad Mehldau initially made his mark with saxophonist Joshua Redman’s quartet. But his voice found its most potent expression on a series of trio records he recorded with drummer Jorge Rossy and bassist Larry Grenadier. The “Art Of The Trio” albums helped establish Mehldau as “the most highly acclaimed jazz artist to have emerged in the last decade” (JazzTimes). More recently, Mehldau has shifted to solo piano performances: his 2004 release Live In Tokyo features songs by Thelonious Monk, Nick Drake and Radiohead. Jason Moran and Eric Lewis open this all piano evening.
\ Australian songstress Kasey Chambers channels my inner teenage girl. She conjures up memories of Jill Sobule,Juliana Hatfield, and Rosie Thomas with here acoustic melodies and lighter take on rock. She is joined tonight by The Greencards who seem to play both classic bluegrass as well as acoustic folk but never in the same song. Definitely the cheap date pick of the week.
