The Brooklyn Independent Cinema Series continues their bi-weekly screening to fill your Monday night void tonight with Toots. "Toots Shor is many things to many people, said Edward R. Murrow of the legendary Manhattan saloonkeeper in 1955. A friend to the famous, a crook to the feds, father, brother, gambler, bum, but most of all Toots Shor was the owner of Americas greatest saloon. Directed by his granddaughter, TOOTS is a provocative, loving and unmistakably authentic portrait of the self-made, unapologetic and quintessentially American man who became the unlikely den-mother to the heroes of Americas golden age. Politicians and gangsters, sports heroes and movie stars -- Sinatra, Gleason, Dimaggio, Ruth, Costello, Eisenhower, Nixon, Warren -- for 30 years, they all found their way to Toots eponymous saloon on New York's West 51st Street for food and drink, served up with a heaping side of insults and put downs."

In this project with Ethan Crenson, Sun’s video footage is the result of an intensive period of shooting concerts at the Williamsburg Waterfront and editing silent movements of everything except the actual music-making. Crenson’s sound is completely independent from the video. It is constructed from exquisite field recordings collected from South Slope/Greenwood Heights/Sunset Park neighborhoods. With no overt synchronicity, the relationship between video and sound creates a multi-layered place of contradictions, fleeting connections and uncertainty.

Now in its third year, BETA Spaces promotes and facilitates open dialogue among curators, artists and visitors. The free, one-day festival features hundreds of artists in over thirty curated shows. The festival takes place in approximately ten square blocks of industrial, post-industrial, commercial and residential buildings, permitting a wide range of alternative exhibition spaces including lofts, studios, galleries, street corners, restaurants, retail stores and radio stations. This dense yet varied geographic plan furnishes visitors with an easily accessible and highly informative trajectory through a neighborhood bustling with creative enthusiasm and collaborative pursuits. Get full details and an map here.
BETA Spaces is a non-traditional art festival: its framework of presenting curated thematic group exhibitions is designed to encourage conceptual integrity and interdisciplinary elasticity. Artists and curators are challenged to recontextualize their efforts and envision art works outside the white box environment of the commercial art world, or the in-process setting of an open studio. Due to the shared parameters and collaborative underpinnings of participation, the festival itself functions as a "group show" of an energetic and vibrant neighborhood. From glimpses of Bushwick's varied histories to rooftop views, local politics to mixed-media performances, BETA Spaces offers visitors an array of options for engagement, immersion and entertainment.
Special events include a panel on public art production at Lumenhouse (47 Beaver Street) at 1pm, and the BETA Spaces After Party at Page Not Found (76 Jefferson Street), which will give visitors and artists a space to unwind and discuss the events of the day (7pm - midnight). Arts in Bushwick is also excited to partner with 3rd Ward's Moviehouse (95 Morgan Avenue), which will screen films from 7 - 9pm.

Kings County Cinema Society is back with an evening of J-Horror. "Nippon horror from Japan's legendary grindhouse auteur Miike, who has pounded out over seventy theatrical, video, and TV productions since his debut in 1991. Prolific, provocative, and probably not appropriate for anyone." Film summary below.
Gozu has been compared to a J-horror version of Mullholland Dr., Miike’s twisted conflation of Yakuza mystery, Lynchian comic-horror, Japanese folklore, and lots of lactating. ”…a straight-to-video Japanese release that snuck into Cannes last year and has been leaving a trail of damp, crusty stains on the festival circuit since, it is likely his most cunning and controlled work since the sex-panic Venus flytrap Audition.” -Dennis Lim
In Visitor Q, his indescribably perverse take on the family drama, a deranged dad sets out to make a documentary on the exploits of his seriously damaged family. "The scandalous pinnacle of Miike's extreme cinema canon." -Nick Schager, Lessons of Darkness

Zoe Muntaner
If getting in trouble was a lifestyle, this girl definitely is living large. Despite her best effort and intentions it seems to follow or anticipate her steps. From what she says, how she says it to her innate notion of what is fair in a free society "like ours", from Puerto Rico to Los Angeles and now New York to the travels in-between there is always a story in her life. No wonder she has landed in the borough with the most stories of all! In her free time, she sleeps.... alone.... just to stay out of trouble.
Ophira Eisenberg
A MAC (Manhattan Association of Clubs and Cabarets) Award Finalist for Best Female Comic, Ophira Eisenberg has appeared on Comedy Central's Premium Blend and Fresh Faces of Comedy, VH-1's Best Week Ever and All Access, E! Channel, the Oxygen Network, and the Discovery Channel. She also had her own 1⁄2 hour comedy special for CTV’s Comedy Now! An installation by Uqbar Foundation (a collaboration between Mariana Castillo Deball and Irene Kopelman), “Zeno Reminder” uses the Futurist credo that machines will improve human efficiency and speed to play with the bonds and ruptures between nature and technology. Sculpture-structures inspired by Futurist artist Fortunato Depero will serve as a setting for an array of objects—including sculptures, drawings, and paintings—that pose the question: “What would the style of a creative automaton be?” Probably a "spasmodic machine," one that feels the need to produce disorder, turning its own codes upside down. Like such a machine, our technological culture must “fail” if it is to succeed, for its very failures constitute that which it is trying to measure, harness, or predict. If the predictions of science were completely exhaustive, would nature become technology, and vice versa?
The opening will feature a screening of Castillo Deball's video Nobody Was Tomorrow (2007). Taking the style of a children's tale, the work consists of three characters telling their own stories: Nobody, an accelerating aging machine in Belgrade’s National Library; the huge ficus tree inside the House of Culture in Čačak, Serbia; and the archaeological remains of the Roman baths, also in Čačak. All the characters in the story are real, but the connections between them are fictional.

These men are specialized in slinging the heaviest of dubstep beats on serious sound systems. With every member of the crew racking 10 years or more in the NYC Dj/Mc circuit, they have evolved into a force with the ability to destroy and re-assemble a dancefloor as they see fit. http://www.myspace.com/enkryptionprojekt

In 1995, New York writer Lorenzo Carcaterra stunned audiences with a memoir entitled Sleepers, which told the story of the author and three friends, all from Hell’s Kitchen, who had been sentenced to a juvenile prison as boys. There, the memoir claims, they had been abused by a ruthless gang of guards. Even more sensationally, Sleepers described an elaborate conspiracy (including a local priest) to subvert the criminal trial that ensued years later when two of those boys murdered one of the guards. Christopher Wilson’s presentation will discuss the uses of ethnic, literary, and political memory in this memoir—patterns suggested especially by Carcaterra’s recent editorship of Alexandre Dumas’s Count of Monte Cristo—in order to decipher its claims about contemporary justice, victim’s rights, and neighborhood authority.
