"For the second year, Art in Odd Places, NYC’s free annual public art and performance festival, gives daily life from Avenue C to the Hudson River an artistic twist. Under the rubric ‘SIGN', over 60 artists, from New York and beyond, creatively engage the street, using ideas, imagination, humor, and politics to encourage its residents, workers, and visitors to experience it anew. Projects include the ephemeral – real and imagined gay love letters left on a bench, dollar bills planted in an exploration of the gift, or handmade sculptures of dying silkworm moths on walls and signs – and the spectacular – video projections on windows of the street’s bawdy, protest history, an alternative election campaign or a satirical costumed race for the Arctic. It includes the simply odd –public napping, wearable sculptures in crochet and campy frills – and the oddly simple – tributes, through tour and installation, to the ordinary brick or to manholes, or a shamanic cleansing of the street by an artist with a broom." Tonight is the opening reception but the exhibit continues through October 26th. Full info on site.

"Giant Step presents the third installment of Svedka Vodka Sessions: an evening with singer/songwriter Diane Birch and special guest DJ Anané Vega for a not-to-be-missed showcase at Hudson Bar at Hudson... Diane Birch's first recorded offering Bible Belt is one of the most accomplished albums you're likely to hear all year. An instant classic, spanning soul, gospel, blues, and much more, it's equally inspired by Laura Nyro and Carole King as by Jerry Lee Lewis and Elton John. Diane carves her own sound with exceptional songwriting and deft performance on the keys - piano, Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Farfisa, all showcasing her extraordinary ability. However, it is her melodies and lyrics that place her in a league of her own. In tones that seem far older than her years, she grapples with the theologies of her childhood, musing on life, love, sin and the Devil in the same breath."

The intersection of semiotics and psychoanalysis has proven fruitful terrain for PR professionals, advertisers, politicians, and other types of leaders. Over the course of a century those whose job it is to persuade the public have increasingly abandoned appeals to rationale in favor of appeals to emotion. Instead of trying to persuade with text and reason, they use imagery and symbols to appeal to instinct and emotion. Join author, historian, and media/culture theorist Stuart Ewen tonight for a tour through the history of "spin", propaganda, and the role of images in consumerism, mass psychology, politics, social movements, cultural attitudes, and consumption. PR is a battle to define reality, and how people see and understand that reality. In this presentation, we will explore what it means to do battle armed with the tools of persuasion.

Dana Lindaman, co-author (with Kyle Ward) of the highly praised 'History Lessons: How Textbooks from Around the World Portray U.S. History', provides sometimes hilarious, often sobering answers to that question by looking at what the world’s history textbooks say about America. By juxtaposing contrasting versions of the historical events that we take for granted, Lindaman offers nothing less than a map of emotional responses to American political power. Sponsored by the Mellon Foundation as part of the Translation Across the Disciplines lecture series."

From this period, new imagery has been created from manipulated found photos and juxtapositions of movie stills, clippings and gore magazine art. "Subcultural Capital" is described as the cultural knowledge and commodities acquired by members of a subculture, raising their status and helping differentiate them from members of other groups. Ronnie Cutrone, Rammellzee, Kostas Seremetis, and Romon Kimin Yang aka Rostarr, signal their membership through the distinctive use of style, spontaneity and popular iconography derived from their subcultural influences – and elevate as masters of their craft. Characterized by themes drawn from popular mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects, the exhibition, Subculture Capital integrates subculture and mass culture, pop art and post modernism. Using techniques that include appropriation, collage, painting, sculpture, film, and performance, these four artists individually refine and stylize their cultural influences, manipulating them into embodiments of personal compilations.

They meant the physical structures – the buildings that crowd the neighborhood and represent the architecture of the everyday. If so, is it our obligation to protect and preserve? Who and what are deemed worthy of saving? Join us for a screening of a provocative new documentary, 'Lower East Side: An Endangered Place,' which looks at these questions in greater detail. Following the film is a panel discussion on the role that culture and the arts can play in promoting neighborhood vitality and diversity. Trailer can be viewed here."

This month marks the first anniversary of Harlem's Uptown Salon, a showcase and forum for the discussion of creative work, and an organization that seeks to foster a tightly knit artistic community in Harlem and the Upper West Side. Typically, each artist from a variety of media (i.e. music, literature, visual arts etc.) has 10-15 minutes to present and discuss in some detail 2-3 works. Then, spectators and other participants are open to comment appropriately. The Uptown Salon is always seeking new talent and folks to add to its growing community so email them if intersted.
From Nick at Too Cool... "This show has been a labor of love for the past year. We've hit the high and lows. The peaks and valleys. We've laughed and not cried at all because this is a comedy show for Pete's sake. Well, there might have been some tears at one of Cassidy's going away parties and it's still hard to look at the mural of Cassidy's life that Diego Rivera painted in the Coco 66 green room without the waterworks flowin'. Please Come celebrate with me! I've concocted a fool-proof show for you all to enjoy with some of my very favorite people in the world. This includes an extended set by Shayna Ferm and the Upper Deckers (yes, that means the whole band is gonna be blowing the doors off the place). We've also got Jesse Popp rocking out in his alter ego, Larry Nightingale. All that and more surprises to come."

Poirier
(Ninja Tune - Montreal, Canada)
poiriersound. com
The power of DJ/producer Poirier’s bass will blast through any flimsy attempt to classify his music. While the purists struggle to label his sound as either dancehall, soca, or electro, Poirier, signed to Ninja Tune, just takes what needs from all three and unleashes the result in a raw dance floor frenzy. Poirier’s tracks are sparse landscapes of Caribbean drums made superhuman with pulsating, pitch-shifting, and infectious bass and synth patterns. His style evolves and tears through new genres constantly, leaving a trail of packed, chaotic dance floors in its wake.

"The Fader and Brooklyn Bowl have teamed up for the first ever Fader Bowl and we couldn't be more stoked to bring the Ambassador of Boogie Funk himself, Dam-Funk, to the Bowl! Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk. As a DJ/selector, Dãm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk aficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it's not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups' unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy."
What better a way to watch Monday night football than to catch it on Brooklyn Bowl's 9 massive HD projecton screen while enjoying a cold Brooklyn-brewed beer and gnoshing on Blue Ribbon food? Why not throw hippy-hopper DJ Logic into the mix for something completely different. Logic will be weaving tunes, beats and loops around the flow of the game to keep things lively all night long. (Note.. I can't find a confirmation on the Brooklyn Bowl site that this is happening this week so you may want to confirm.) 21+

Children and families out Trick or Treating are invited to stop by from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to collect treats, take photos, and pay tribute to the Boos, who went missing 200 years ago the very night. Legend has it, that the Boo Family worked the docks as fishmongers in the early 1800s. While attempting to return home during an unexpected blizzard the evening of Oct. 31, 1809, Mr. and Mrs. Boo, along with their children Boo Jr., Little Miss Boo, and Baby Boo, as well as the family dog Bow Wow Boo, disappeared from the wooden piers of lower Manhattan...
