Upgrade! NY continues its series on open source as it relates to activism and creative practice with a conversation between Larisa Mann and Karl Fogel followed by a DJ set by Larisa Mann (aka DJ Ripley). The discussion will examine how Jamaican music has developed in the absence of an effective copyright regime, how technological and social conditions affect the music and musicians, and then will compare this to the open source movement today. They’ll look at how changes in technology and social convention affect music, software, and culture in general.
Larisa Mann is a PhD Candidate in Jurisprudence and Social Policy at UC Berkeley Law School, and resident DJ at SuryaDub, San Francisco. She researches the social implications of intellectual property rules, the legal implications of actual creative practices, and explores the implications of networked life (day-to-day reality permeated by networked technology) for our concepts of rights.
Karl Fogel is an open source software developer and writer who works for Canonical, Ltd, the company behind Ubuntu, helping with the open-source Launchpad collaboration platform, as well as QuestionCopyright.org, a California-based non-profit that promotes public understanding of the history and effects of copyright, and encourages the development of distribution systems suitable for a networked world in which the cost of sharing information has gone to zero.

"In Unsettled Beauty, [Jeff] Huntington is focusing primarily on portraits of children, using Old Master paintings as his point of departure, while also incorporating images
from contemporary life – photographs of genocide and emaciated supermodels to celebrity mug shots. These subtly disquieting portraits capture subjects in moments of stress, panic, fear, confusion, and resignation."
In order to evoke the Old Master style, Huntington employs the grisaille painting technique, famously used by Johannes Vermeer. Beginning with a black and white layer of underpainting, shades of gray are overlaid with layers of color to create works that appear to jump out from the picture plane. Using his own nieces and nephews as models, Huntington explores the capacity of external influences to obscure familial intimacy and create a lingering sense of anxiety and emotional longing.

"The cornerstone of The Poetry Brothel is its event series. A new and dreamlike twist on a poetry reading, The Poetry Brothel is foremost interested in showcasing a diverse roster of emerging and established poets. However, our events are also interactive performance art pieces based on the concept of the prewar brothels in the United States and Europe. Each night The Madame presents a rotating cast of both male and female poets engaged in a night of literary debauchery and private poetry readings. The poets act as 'whores,' making audience members 'johns,' but instead of physical intimacy, the poets offer the intimacy of their poetry in private, one-on-one readings... Of course, any good brothel need a furtive 'front' or cover; ours is part saloon and part salon, offering a full bar with absinthe, live music, live painting, fortune-tellers, gypsies, and gamblers with newly integrated performances and installations from our poets and other artists at each event."

"Hannah Craft’s things which perish if not for the using is a subtly new installation each day, an illustration of organic growth at the street level. It is a depiction of specific moments that force the viewer into the realization he or she is not looking at the same piece seen yesterday. Utilizing taxidermy, strawberry plants and wheatgrass, this piece offers a new experience upon each passing. The artist’s hand is removed at a certain point, allowing light and water to control the final aesthetics of the piece. things which perish if not for the using is an opportunity for people to contemplate how we coexist with plants and animals and to observe simple things most likely overlooked everyday, if ever even witnessed, amongst the hustle of midtown Manahattan. The stems crawl over the deer. The fruit rots or gets eaten. The grass grows tall and wilts."

Music, art, food and drink come together at Liberator Magazine's Live From Planet Earth event. "Live, From Planet Earth is a community space that encourages our community's creative genius to form collective visions. Here we witness the growth of that genius, we collaborate to manifest those visions and we are challenged to be more creative. In this space genuine fun is encouraged, pretentiousness is played out and creative expression is used as a tool to help preserve humanity." More on tonight's session below.
The session will be held once again in Brodie's backyard, in the Broadway Junction area of Brooklyn. My man got the fire pit cleaned out, the fire escape "stage" ready where performers will be rocking the mic from, and tiki torches filled with citrus oil. The plan is to party all night long under the stars in the middle of Brooklyn, and raise some support for a great community project, Lunch By Nature (a project working to provide affordable, healthy meals to families and individuals in need). If you made it out to the last party in July, then you know it was the best LFPE thus far. Since the plan is to always get better, we plan to top that with one last gathering under the stars before the cold comes.

"For nearly 12 years an invisible war has ravaged this beloved, beleaguered country. Over five million dead, hundreds of thousands of women and girls raped and sexually tortured in the most unimaginable ways, 800,000 internally displaced since January 2009 and close to 350,000 forced to flee to neighbouring countries. This violence is fuelled by the world's need for minerals, most recently due to the economic crisis. Congo, the sixth most mineral-rich country in Africa, has become the stage for a regional war fuelled by ¬economic interests. There has been no accountability for these horrific crimes, no justice, hardly a mention in the world press. Come learn more about these unspeakable atrocities as we explore this issues further with Eve Ensler, award winning author of The Vagina Monologues, activist and founder of V-day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls."

"Almost 250 years into it’s storied history, and America has yet failed to produce a single true artist on the scale of a Shakespeare or a Rembrandt or a Milton. With one exception: Barry White. The 'crooning' achievement of this nation’s great Socio-Political experiment with Democracy, Barry White’s satin sound and smoove lyrics
represent America’s highest cultural achievement to date. Join scholar and author Jamie Hook for a definitive appraisal and PowerPoint presentation about America’s only Artist. Featured will be numerous samples, from his early Auteurist creation 'Do the Banana Split' for the TV show the Banana Splits and to his breakthrough discoveries of the 'wackawacka' guitar sound (memorably deployed in 'Love's Theme') and the double glissando (climaxing in 'Satin Soul'). Jamie Hook is a cultural scholar whose work focuses almost exclusively on the 'smooth soul' musical era of the mid- to late 1970s. He has written about Barry White for publications including the Stranger and The Rocket in Seattle, and lectured on Barry White for the Rendezvous Reading Series. He is currently working on his new book Lights under a Bushel: the Ashford and Simpson Story. Mr. Hook is also the curator of this series."

I'm passing this along because I like a lot of the artists in this show but can't really decipher the art-speak press release. Here you go... "On the occasion of its Fifth Anniversary, Perry Rubenstein Gallery presents The Law of Fives, a group exhibition featuring monumental works by each artist: FAILE, Zilla Leutenegger, Teresa Margolles, Robin Rhode, Richard Woods. Each of the five artists to be shown work within the realm of illusion or with the notion of re-envisioning that which has previously existed. Since the gallery's inauguration in September of 2004, it has staged over fifty exhibitions incorporating artists from the program and beyond. Early exhibitions featuring historically significant artists often rooted in the performative realm (Bas Jan Ader in 2005, James Lee Byars in 2006) have provided a contextual foundation to the program, highlighting cross-genre and hybrid artistic practices. The fifth anniversary of the gallery is about looking beyond, looking into the future—highlighting what the gallery looks like now, where we've been and where we're going."

Corporatism didn’t evolve naturally. The landscape on which we are living – the operating system on which we are now running our social software – was invented by people, sold to us as a better way of life, supported by myths, and ultimately allowed to develop into a self-sustaining reality. It is a map that has replaced the territory. Each year, legions of ad people, copywriters, market researchers, pollsters, consultants, and even linguists spend billions of dollars and millions of man-hours trying to determine how to persuade consumers what to buy, whom to trust, and what to think. We are swimming in a sea of messages.
Tonight, award winning writer, documentary filmmaker, and scholar Douglas Rushkoff
Rushkoff discuss concepts he explores in the PBS Frontline series The Persuaders and Merchants of Cool, as well as his latest book Life Inc at the kickoff of the Symbols, Branding, and Persuasion lecture series.

More sweet music from the good people at Brooklyn Bowl... I'll be there late night to turkey your arses! "The Pimps of Joytime crosses all the barriers and bridges all the gaps between underground funk, soul, pop, dance, afrobeat and latin, filling every song with soulful harmonies and great vibes. Brian J is the band’s ringmaster. He started The PJT’s in Brooklyn back in 2005, where they cut their teeth in NYC clubs. Mixing samples and dance beats with tasty live musicianship and sweet vocal harmonies, The Pimps of Joytime have evolved into the current five-piece that gets crowds from SF to London on their feet. Putting a modern twist on a retro sound, The PJT's make dirty, a$$-shakin’ grooves like no one else. 2009 has been even better—The PJT's have already played over 70 shows from California to North Carolina to Alaska, and somehow found the time to complete their newest album, 'Funky Brooklyn' which is coming soon."

Two teams of Robot Monkeys square off in a series of soccer-style tournaments starting at 6pm in the “Circle of Doom”, the scale model stadium with a captive toy audience. Customers will be encouraged to throw their names in to fight for dominance with prizes awarded to the winners. Dan Walker’s Calder-inspired multimedia art installations bring his background and interests in mechanical toys and art together in a unique event for the sports fan, the art appreciator, and the average punter. Although it began as a spoof on the abundance of advertising in professional sports, the installation now features real sponsored teams and advertisements accumulated as it travels from city to city. Audience members will compete for prizes as live commentators cover the games.

James Ellroy os at Book Court tonight in Carroll Gardens. He "concludes the scorching trilogy begun with 1995’s American Tabloid with a crushing bravura performance. As ever, his sentences are gems of concision, and his characters—many of whom readers will remember from The Cold Six Thousand and from American history classes—are a motley crew of grotesques often marked by an off-kilter sense of honor: stone bad-asses, in other words, though the women are stronger than the men who push the plot."

Drinks will be served but you must be twenty-one or older and present two forms of valid ID to purchase drinks... not everything can be like the roaring twenties."
