art.party.theater.company turns the lawn ofBryant Park into its canvas today for Bryant in the Park, a performance event inspired by the nature poems of William Cullen Bryant, the park’s namesake. It is a unique theatrical garden party in the middle of Manhattan—filled with magic and whimsy. The piece consists of a dozen members of the exclusive and imaginary Bryant Park Croquet Society, dressed in white, playing croquet on Bryant Park's main lawn. Sipping tea and gossiping, they amuse the crowd that gathers around. Suddenly, as if possessed by a spirit, they burst into William Cullen Bryant’s odes to nature. Slowly, they begin to transform into nature lovers, losing the urbane veneer of sophistication and civility. Finally, they surrender to summer and its wild power through dance, music, and movement.
