Bryant in the Park
FreeNYC Event Flyer Date: Fridays, August 7th, 14th, and 21st
Time: 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Location: Bryant Park (6th Avenue and 41st Street)
Cost: Free
art.party.theater.company turns the lawn ofBryant Park into its canvas today for Bryant in the Park, a performance event inspired by the nature poems of William Cullen Bryant, the park’s namesake. It is a unique theatrical garden party in the middle of Manhattan—filled with magic and whimsy. The piece consists of a dozen members of the exclusive and imaginary Bryant Park Croquet Society, dressed in white, playing croquet on Bryant Park's main lawn. Sipping tea and gossiping, they amuse the crowd that gathers around. Suddenly, as if possessed by a spirit, they burst into William Cullen Bryant’s odes to nature. Slowly, they begin to transform into nature lovers, losing the urbane veneer of sophistication and civility. Finally, they surrender to summer and its wild power through dance, music, and movement. Suggested Dress Code: Your Most Sophisticated Croquet Whites

"Fronted by the Joplin-like vocals and the Hammond B-3 playing of the group’s fearless frontwoman, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals play 'blues-based rock with glorious passion.' The music of Deer Tick is hard to categorize—folk? indie rock? alt-country? Americana?—but easy to love. They 'write and play some of the most soulful, inspired music around, littered with lyrics as sharp as a shot of whiskey and rapid-fire guitar solos strong enough to blow the dust off your boots.'" Blues and Lasers: Grace Potter Afterparty
FreeNYC Event Flyer Date: Friday, August 7th
Time: 11:30pm
Location: Brooklyn Bowl (61 Wythe St, W'burg)
Cost: Free
Need a bit more jam in your evening after the Celebrate Brooklyn show? Head over to Brooklyn Bowl for a free afterparty with Blues and Lasers. "The band is the electric sonic brainchild of Scott Tournet, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. Tournet, currently one of Grace Potter’s Nocturnals, recruited four other players to complete the lineup and flesh out the band’s sound – forceful, swampy, blues, heavy on rhythm (courtesy of the two-drummer combo) and slide guitar. Blues and Lasers incites obvious comparisons to the Black Keys and the Allman Brothers Band, while songs such as '22 Times' evoke classic Robert Johnson blues imagery about selling ones soul." 21+
