"McCaig-Welles Gallery is pleased to present Little Creatures, a group exhibition curated by Megan Hays. Selecting works from among the artists represented by the gallery and from among her peers, the curator sought out emerging and mid-career artists working in a variety of media to participate in her curatorial debut. Inspired by the Talking Heads' song 'Creatures of Love', the works chosen for the exhibition are imbued with an adult sense of wonder: dealing particularly with themes of love, sex, responsibility and consequence. While facing a present in which many of us have seen our paychecks dwindle and in some cases stop altogether, our lives march on with the volatility of our relationships remaining intact. In spite of all the practical contingencies of our daily lives, the responsibility implicit in the joys of childbirth and in the grief of death remains unaltered. little creatures seeks to show the artists' vision of the emotional landscape in an endeavor that is invariably topical."

Robinson Crusoe, an English adventurer, finds himself the only survivor of a shipwreck on an island off the coast of Trinidad. Crusoe must find a way to survive on the island and overcome his fear of solitude. "Life on a Desert Island" is more than just the story of the adventures of a bearded man stranded on an island; it is also a spectacle about civilization. In his adventure in the wilderness, he follows the path from gatherer of plants, to hunter, to farmer and to craftsman. You will see skills that Crusoe conquers: how to identify edible plants, how make a shelter, a bow and arrow, a net, a trap, how to plant crops, and how to make a boat. The play is truly an adventure that addresses the eternal questions: how does one overcome silence, loneliness, fear, and how does one become a persevering and responsible person? "Life on a Desert Island" is a guide about surviving the wilderness and unity with the environment. The play is a timely reminder of how perilous life can be and how resourceful we can become in the face of adversity.
“Life on a Desert Island” has been adapted from Defoe’s popular novel by the playwright Ugljesa Sajtinac, one of the most acclaimed playwrights of the young generation of Serbian artists. In this production the role of Robinson Crusoe will be played by both Samuel Kirk and Jason Vance as they rotate the role of the adventurer in the multiple performances around the city.

The Secret Science Club presents Evolution Revolution: Paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson—the discoverer of Lucy—lectures on Human Origins
As a species, Homo sapiens is a mere 250,000 years old (give or take). Where did humans come from? How did we evolve? And what were our ancestors like? One fossil find revolutionized the world's thinking about early human origins: In 1974 paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson discovered the bones of Lucy—a 3.2-million-year-old early hominid—in the Afar region of Ethiopia. With about 40 percent of her skeleton intact, Lucy represented a new species, Australopithecus afarensis.
The founding director of the Institute for Human Origins, professor of paleoanthropology at Arizona State University's School of Human Evolution and Social Change, and author of the just-published Lucy's Legacy: The Quest for Human Origins, Dr. Johanson joins the Secret Science Club to discuss his historic find and the latest discoveries in human evolution:
--What kinds of hominid species existed prior to humans?
--When did hominids begin to walk? To develop big brains?
--Have fossil hunters located the common ancestor of humans and chimps?
--Why is Homo sapiens the only hominid species that survives?
Before & After
--Groove to bone-jangling tunes and video
--Stick around for the scintillating Q&A
--Try our cocktail of the night, the “I Love Lucy!”

THREE, a book of triptychs by acclaimed photographer Ed Kashi, plays on the visual appetite of a hectic world. These triptychs span eras and continents, challenging our notions of perspective and the individual image. After the release of her hit album Bible Belt, rising Billboard star Diane Birch will be playing a free concert at the Roosevelt L!VE summer music festival today. Opening the show, will be Brooklyn's own Jones Street Station, who recently took part in a hugely successful summer tour with Ben Kweller. More on the artists below. All ages.
Jones Street Station is generating significant buzz in the indie scene, after opening gigs with star Ben Kweller. The 5-part band will deliver their signature danceable, genre-defying sound: a single track off of their sophomore album In Verses might sound like a banjo-laden country ballad one minute and a screaming rock anthem the next. Utilizing an unusual array of instruments, they blend the mandolin and harmonica seamlessly with the accordion and banjo in carefully crafted folk-pop melodies that are sure to be a hit.
Still in her mid-twenties, Diane Birch is quickly reaching critical acclaim, as her first single “Nothing but a Miracle” was recently the #1 most played song on Boston's WXRV - beating out giants like Dave Matthews, Coldplay and Kings of Leon for the top slot. Singer-songwriter Diane Birch’s unconventional upbringing helped shape a voice that is both classic and distinctly her own, on her debut CD, Bible Belt. Diane Birch’s skillful piano melodies and soulful vocals tinge even the most melancholy refrain with an uplifting groove.

Tonight, The Living Theatre continues it Readings Above Realism Series with a free staged reading of A Shadow in the Dark by Jared Latore. "The subject of Latore’s stunning play is simple enough: a man who spreads disease to his partners. The characters are like us, dealing as best they can with the realities of life. What’s extraordinary is that they meet their fates among characters who are perhaps not personalities at all. They may be ideas… demons? The world of the play is like ours – actual and imagined, with spirits walking among us." All Ages

"Where are you from? is a dance installation based around Sarah Dahnke’s latest full-length choreographic work titled from, which explores conflicting forms of cultural identity (from was created while in residence at CAVE in Brooklyn, NY). Throughout the week, there will be a secured box outside the performance space, for passers-by to leave souvenirs from their hometown/home country and answers to the question 'Where are you from?' These artifacts will be incorporated into an interactive map within the
performance space. The performance aspect of the piece explores stereotypes, ethnic motifs and a lot of blurry lines, inviting the audience to stop and think about the way we try to force people to align with stereotypes and to try and recognize the 'grey area' between."

Free, summer, concerts roll on tonight as River to River continues their Seaport Music Festival on the East River tonight with a live performance by Polvo. Both alarming and charming, Polvo's eclectic sound and style is absolutely unmistakable. Coming of age in the early 90s, the Chapel Hill noise rock band delivers complex and dissonant guitar harmonies and driving rhythms. After a 10-year hiatus, Polvo reunited in 2008 to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival. The reception sparked the group's return to the studio in mid-March to record their first album in 12 years. Opening for Polvo is the acclaimed garage rock quartet Obits. The Brooklyn-based band records on Seattle's Sub Pop, and plays "heavy, driving, meat-and-potatoes rock music" - thus achieving a musical trifecta.
