'Reef', an interactive installation by LA-based architects Rob Ley and Joshua Stein, investigates the role emerging material technology can play in the sensitive reprogramming of architectural and public space. Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), a category of metals that change shape according to temperature, offer the possibility of efficient, fluid movement without the mechanized motion of earlier technologies. Reef redefines the role of architectural envelope by capitalizing on these emerging material technologies to imbue space with behavioral qualities. In this installation ,the public engages in the new social nuances revealed as exhibition is redefined by exploding the perceived 'wall' separating private and public space. The responsive membrane creates a diverse range of porous and dynamic enclosures capable of producing sophisticated, flexible responses to an existing program. Reef creates an interior condition which reacts according to an exterior street-scape, and reasserts an active role in shaping that public space.

"In 2006 the Come Out & Play Festival turned New York City into a playground for a weekend, then did the same for the city of Amsterdam in 2007. Hundreds of players gathered to play dozens different games across each city. Players raced through the night in a city-wide game of zombie tag. Friends faced off in life-sized Pong using only their ears to "hear" the ball. Payphones produced points and Tompkins Square Park became a putt-putt course. 200 people performed stunts to display on the Reuters screen in Times Square. It has been darn good and fascinating fun. Well, the festival is back. [and this weekend] New Yorkers will have the chance to come out and play again across the Lower East Side of Manhattan." There's way too much to talk about so just check the details here.

From Carlos Ruiz Zafón, comes The Angel’s Game – the much-anticipated follow-up to the international phenomenon, The Shadow of the Wind – which will be officially launched in the United States at Barnes & Noble’s 'Upstairs at the Square.' Zafón sketches in bold strokes, another dark, gothic universe that unfolds in an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, where a young man, David Martín, makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym... Brooklyn-based Las Rubias del Norte (‘The Blondes of the North’) play boleros, cha-cha-cha, cumbias, huaynos, lieder, and cowboy songs. Fronted by classically trained singers Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst, the band mixes musicians from the U.S., France and Colombia who all look back to the Latin motherland most of them never had. Their latest album, Panamericana (Barbès Records), featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition and Studio 360, draws inspiration from across the Americas and plays like a dreamy soundtrack where cha-cha-cha and boleros mix with classical harmonies and cowboy music."

Do they make bodypaint with sunscreen? Is body glitter easy to get off with salt water? what is the boiling point of asphalt? These are just some of the questions that will be passing through your brain if you choose to partake in one of Brooklyn's newest old traditions, The Mermaid Parade and Ball at Coney Island. I've been to a lot of after parties, but never to the actual parade, but I know it's a blast for everyone. If you want to be a part of the magical procession. Gates of Heaven:
Gates of Heaven, two talented local indie-pop songsmiths—Graham Smith (of Kleenex Girl Wonder fame) and Zachary Mexico (the Octagon)—aim for an enlightened sort of electrochant that is both weird and stunning.
Religious to Damn:
Zohra Atash's brainchild, Religious To Damn, is that rarest of jewels--sophisticated gypsy rock and roll that's tender and aggressive, elegant and raw all in the same melodic burst. From the postpunk dancefloor to those psychedelic distant, dreamy places where dim fires illuminate the nighttime, the universe Atash creates is at times expansive, at times intimate, and always compelling.
Begushkin:
Recorded live to tape in two days, after a sleep deprived month of Beefheart style creative lockdown, Begushkin - Dan Smith's 8 headed hydra - lay to rest the twilight folk of 2007s Nightly Things and reemerge with the wicked & strange hard rock gypsy shake of King's Curse album. Smith yells and carries on like a man possessed with tales of the damnation of a robber king and the band plays it ultra tight & ultra heavy. Begushkin plays head bobbing, skin crawling higher tier creep rock.

New York's iconic Paper magazine celebrates the release of its summer music issue by hosting the biggest music event in its history — a free concert featuring hipster-hip-hopper Kid Cudi, with prep-pop duo Chester French, and DJ sets by Brooklyn noise-rock legends Les Savy Fav. All Ages
For those unfamiliar, Kid Cudi, recently featured in PAPER's summer music issue, is the genius/Kanye West protégé behind this year's stoner anthem "Day 'N' Night," and one of this summer's most hotly anticipated albums, Man on the Moon: The Guardian, out in August. He'll be joined by the scrappy Harvard grads Maxwell Drummey and D.A. Wallach, aka Chester French, whose cheeky dance-pop ditties have earned them loads of fans, including Mr. Pharrell Williams who produced their April release, Love The Future. Of the concert, the boys had this to say: "We can't wait to pump the South Street Seaport full of hawt rawk music and to show the PAPERMAGNATES what Chester French is all about. We're looking forward to playing songs from our debut albums Love the Future and Jacques Jams, Vol. 1: Endurance, both available at www.chesterfrench.com." Topping off the madness are Brooklyn's own art-damaged darlings Les Savy Fav, who will be manning the DJ booth in between sets.
The concert is slated to kick off at 5:30 p.m. this Friday, June 26, on the Pier 17 stage at The Seaport. See you there!

Date: Friday, June 26th Time: 10:00pm Location: Webster Hall (125 East 11th St bet 3rd and 4th Ave) Cost:$1 before midnight with RSVP
There's been a club music revolution going on as of late in Australia and - along with names like Bass Kleph and Aston Shuffle - tonight's Sneaky Sound System are leading the way. Their smash hit single "I Love It" has been buring up radio charts worldwide with its proper blend of big-room sensibilities and sugary-sweet indie-electro melodies. Tonight is a very rare stateside appearance along with Boston's indie darlings, Hot Pink Delorean and a live set from Swedish hip-hop MC Adam Tensta. See my note on Webster Hall below. Highly recommended. 19+
While I am really digging what Webster Hall has transformed into over the last few years (especially with their Saturday Circus party and great bookings) this is, still, clublandia. That means fix up, looks sharp and dudes, don't roll in big packs (or better yet, bring some ladies). Doors are selective and we've gotten reports that the lines rolls slowly before midnight (forcing you into full cover charge land) so be sure to queue up early. That shouldn't be a turnoff, however, as tonight's show should be hot.
