It's time for another installment of Dorkbot, the group of people that gather to discuss some of the weirder things people try to do with electricity. Featuring the luxuriantly airborne: Justin Downs: How To Be Creative Not Making Art, and How to Make Art Creatively Not Be Itself; Conrad Shawcross: Slow Arc III; Graham Smith: Social Network, A Digital Painting. Please bring snacks... lecture details below.
justin downs: how to be creative not making art, and how to make art creatively not be itself.
The projects i have typically worked on have been large scale art ventures (engineering design/fabrication of the Carbon Arc Lamp for the Starn Twins 2003 and Play the Building for David Byrne 2005,2008, 2009 two examples). Recently I have found avenues of working which allow for interesting projects that have functional utility. The last project was building a solar powered tree house in the Kenyan Maasai land. The current one is developing with the Wave Farm a semi intelligent solar powered mesh network, which will hopefully translate into tracking collars and techniques, for african wildlife.
Conrad Shawcross: Slow Arc III
British sculptor and Location One international fellow creates multimedia kinetic sculptures that explore the artist's interest in philosophy, science and the mysterious structures of the universe. He will present a new work which features a halogen light moving along an articulated arm inside a mesh cube and some of his earlier work.
Graham Smith: Social Network--A Digital Painting
I have 413 Facebook friends and in one week I saw more then 100 of them in RL. I wanted to create a work of art about virtual friends so to do that I visited them in person. I got a picture of me with lost friends, childhood buddies, ex-girlfriends, family, and people from high school I didn't talk to. I asked them about their RL friends, asked for a physical souvenir, and took their pulse to be used for a 'digital painting' of lightning bugs. The 'painting' is a wall mounted laptop running a looped program.

Focusing on dancehall reggae, grime, dubstep and lately what he calls "dutty house" his underground hit "Brooklyn Anthem" spawned a YouTube dance craze among Brooklyn's teen dancehall dancers who call it the "Craziest Riddim". Some of you might know it as THE FIRST Grime tune to come out of America. He is currently working with the Dutty Artz family which he co-founded with DJ /Rupture on an album with Jahdan Blakkamoore called "Buzzrock Warrior" along with a solo instrumental release.

"Crazy Joe Gallo was immortalized for the blood he spilled on a Mulberry Street curb just outside Umberto’s Clam House on April 7, 1972. But the sidewalks this celebrity gangster more regularly strolled were along the waterfront of Red Hook, Brooklyn, in the vicinity of Freebird Books. During his reign Gallo and gang patrolled this zone with flash and crazy bravado. For thirty years they were part of the neighborhood’s fabric, even as it was carved up by the BQE, experienced suburban flight and urban plight, and saw the decline of stevedoring. Relive the infamy of gangster-era Red Hook in a walking tour on the life and times of beatnik mobster Joey Gallo. Tom Folsom, author of The Mad Ones: Crazy Joe Gallo and the Revolution at the Edge of the Underworld, will lead the tour over the classic Gallo turf (the old docks, the shop-lined streets where Mondo the Midget walked Joey’s pet lion, the sites where the Gallo brothers “went to the mattresses” in a guerilla war against the Mafia, and the funeral home where he lay in state).

"Ad Hoc Art is incredibly honored to present CRASH/DAZE, a stunning exhibition of never seen before works from each artist and featuring the first collaborative works from these legendary New York artists in over ten years. A contemporary of Keith Haring and a modern-day master of this present day art form, CRASH has shot his metaphorica arrows and dizzying flashes into subway cars, walls, and galleries around the globe. His work celebrates the movements of an ever-changing world and is a lavish gift to the eyes as well as a bold statement in time and space... His work, now exhibited globally, still possesses the vivid color and energy he produced initially on subways. True to his roots, CRASH maintains the lettering and image abstraction many writers feel are crucial to the art form. DAZE began painting New York City subway trains, the canvas of choice for the serious graffiti artist, in the late 1970’s. Since moving from subway trains to gallery walls, he has exhibited in Paris, Stockholm, Tokyo, Florence and many others. His work is in public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum Ludwig in Aachen, Germany, and the Brooklyn Museum, where he was also featured in the 2006 "Graffiti" exhibition." Tonight is the opening reception, show runs through June 14th.

In a strange but true tale that has taken the status of underground music legend, the staff of a now-defunct East Village record store "discovered" B.J. when they decided to play one of her demo tapes (an item that had been lying around the store for years and was destined for a "bargain bag" of hard-to-move cassettes). The usually jaded staff was mesmerized by what they heard. They convinced the store's owner that this was something so wonderful that the whole world should hear it. Fred Schneider of the B-52's, a frequent shopper at the store, heard B.J.'s music as well, and wholeheartedly endorsed the idea of a proper release. The album BJ Snowden: Life in the USA and Canada debuted in the fall of 1996, garnering mentions in The New York Press, Magnet and other noteworthy publications. Tonight B.J. plays a free show for you good folks in Williamsburg. Video below.

A musical performance is also part of the program, which concludes with a montage that includes footage of President Obama’s address, then a Senator of Illinois, from Cooper Union’s Great Hall.
For 150 years, thousands have come to Cooper Union’s Great Hall to protest or promote political change in New York City and across the nation: from Theodore Roosevelt and Fiorello LaGuardia to, more recently, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Reliving some of those momentous times in American politics, Great Evenings in The Great Hall presents “Electoral Politics”—an exciting multi-media event and rare opportunity for the public to see notable New Yorkers such as author, journalist and political pundit Fred Siegel, CUNY professor Frances Fox Piven and other well-known actors and writers reenact portions of these pioneering Great Hall speeches (Tuesday, May 19th at 6:30 PM, Great Hall at The Cooper Union, 7 East 7th Street b/w 3rd and 4th Aves.). Whether it is the overthrow of Boss Tweed and the notorious Tammany Hall Gang—or listening to Liz Abzug, daughter of Bella Abzug—a pioneering feminist who mobilized women into American politics, the Great Hall has and continues to be a catalyst for change and can be experienced live in "Electoral Politics." A musical performance and a montage of Great Hall political figures will be integrated throughout the evening’s festivities, concluding with footage of President Obama—then a Senator from Illinois—marking his presidential run for the White House with an illuminating speech in the Great Hall.
Since 1859, the Great Hall has been a preeminent stage for pioneering individuals whose views reshaped society. Each of the eight programs in the “Great Evenings in the Great Hall” year long series will focus on one area of protest, reform, or education to be reenacted by notable New York actors, writers and historians.

Back when MTV was promoting something beyond spoiled left coast teens and middle-American celebrity dreams, the actually had some intelligent programing. One little show, Spoken Word Unplugged, broke spoken word poetry to most of modern America outside of major metropolitain areas. And one woman, Maggie Estep, spit lyrics that we had never seen in our Yeats or Rimbaud. A poignant voice for the transitional "grunge" generation.
Fast forward a dozen or so years and Maggie Estep is still as contemporary as ever. "There is about Maggie Estep's work a directness, a clear determination--a drive to cut through, to break through, to claw through--that is impressive," says A.M. Homes, author of The
Mistress's Daughter. Tonight she reads from her newest novel, Alice Fantastic, at the St. Mark's Bookshop's Solas Stage.
ABOUT ALICE FANTASTIC: Alice Hunter is a thirty-six-year-old professional gambler living in Queens, NY. She is modestly successful as a horseplayer and enjoys her work. Though avidly pursued by her lover, Clayton, who she refers to as The Big Oaf, Alice's closest companion is Candy, a small, spotted dog, and Alice likes it that way. When Clayton's overzealousness leads Alice to ask one of her racetrack cronies to intimidate Clayton into leaving her, a few things go wrong and Alice turns to her half-sister Eloise, a toy maker, whose own lover has just been killed in a freak accident.

"Chances are, if you went to a public high school, you were forced to take art class whether you wanted to or not. You were compelled to turn out a predictable portfolio of drawings, watercolor, and tempera paintings that used complimentary colors or something. It is possible you still have some of the laughably awful work you created in school at your parents' house somewhere, or hey, maybe some of it was actually good. We want to show the art you made in public school at Refuge... You can even sell it, name your own price! Submissions can be accompanied by a title, approx. age at creation, and a short but pretentious description...The night should be a fun and campy, and who knows, you might end up with some cool art for your apartment. This event is completely free, just friends having a few laughs. No outside beverages please."
