Date: Thursday, April 2nd Time: 7:30pm Location: Solas Bar (232 E. 9th Street) Cost: Free
Join The St. Mark's Bookshop Reading Series tonight when the editors of "Poems for the Millennium: Volume Three" take to the Solas stage! "The previous two volumes of this acclaimed anthology set forth a globally decentered revision of twentieth-century poetry from the perspective of its many avant-gardes. Now editors Jerome Rothenberg and Jeffrey C. Robinson bring a radically new interpretation to the poetry of the preceding century, viewing the work of the romantic and post-romantic poets as an
international, collective, often utopian enterprise that became the foundation of experimental modernism. The range of volume three and its skewing of the traditional canon illuminate the process by which romantics and post- romantics challenged nineteenth-century orthodoxies and propelled poetry to the experiments of a later modernism and avant-gardism. Jerome Rothenberg is an internationally known poet and Professor Emeritus of Visual Arts and Literature at the University of California, San Diego. Jeffrey C. Robinson is Professor of English at the University of Colorado Boulder. They will talk about and read selections from the volume."

"Thierry Goldberg Projects is pleased to present Swetlana Heger's latest performance based exhibition, Lipstick Economy. On the heels, pumps, and sensible flats of the spiraling economy, Swetlana Heger sets the gallery as stage for a multi-layered dialogue on the economy, gender, and consumerism--all, she finds, marked by lipstick traces. As an affordable indulgence for morale-sake, lipstick sales have been noted to increase in trying economic times, indicating a little goes a long way attitude to altering one's look. Making a reference to "the lipstick index," a loose theory in consumer confidence coined by Leonard Lauder, chairman of Estée Lauder Companies, Heger explores the aesthetics (cosmetic and experiential) of art and self." Tonight is the opening, show runs through May 3rd. Full details after the jump.
Besotted and blotted with lipstick kisses, Heger's works on paper address the signature of the artist as well as a historical devotion to painting. On the surface, the kiss is Heger's unique mark, singularly hers. On her portrait photographs, the kiss is a signature of a different kind--a stamp, which she tirelessly performs in repetition. Either way, Heger makes no difference between the authenticity of the mark in painting or photography because, as she says, "In the very end every artwork is a 'brand,' signed by an artist." It is this perspective which has driven her past performance based works using the body as a site of display.
Out of homage and adoration, Swetlana Heger's kiss to art is addressed to all--something she likens to the puckering pilgrims who seek out Oscar Wilde's grave or Rindy Sam's renegade kiss on a white Cy Twombly painting in 2007. Here, the kiss is nothing but an optimist perhaps naļve charge--a belief in positive change amidst immanent collapse. Her use of lipstick as a commercial object weighted with a thrifty
transformative power is not far from her exploration of a "perfect world" in her 2007 Animal Farm in which statues of animals were recast from a monumental bronze of Stalin. The amnesia Heger unearths from naivety exposes a reassurance and self-indulgence both celebrated and mocked by her work.
Swetlana Heger (b. 1968, Brno, Czech Republic) lives and works in Berlin. Her work has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions at Konsthall Kalmar, Sweden; Musée des Beaux Arts, Dole, France; and Kunstverein zu Assenheim, Niddatal Assenheim, Germany. Recent solo gallery exhibition include Smoke ( Libertč Toujours ), at EFFEARTE, Milan; Smoke (Torches of Freedom), at COMA, Berlin; and Random Quotes
(About Everything) at galerie frank elbaz, Paris, France. Recent group exhibitions featuring Heger's work include Agency: Artists Subvert Advertising, at The McDonough Museum of Art, Youngstown, OH; What We Bought, at Camera Austria - Kunsthaus, Graz, Austria; and Conditions of Display, at The Moore Space, Miami, FL.
Date: Friday, April 3rd Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location: Eastern District (43 Bogard St, Bushwick) Cost: Free
"Street Art and and vandalism have never been paired so eloquently as they are when PosterBoy gets out his razor. Through a simple act of civil disobedience, this work challenges our intense relationship with outdoor advertising in the city. It proposes new ways of interacting with your public environment and challenges notions of public and private space. Out of the work comes a dialogue which is sometimes political, sometimes humorous, and always a perspective shifting moment of communication.
By bringing outdoor advertising into the gallery, this installation will attempt to discuss the appropriating of public space by outdoor advertising from within the gallery walls. The artist, having more time to construct the imagery will engage a more intense dialogue with both the advertisement and the viewer. By physically altering the medium of outdoor media, the PosterBoy movement critiques both the content and the dissemination methods currently overwhelming our collective consciousness. Ultimately what starts as an act of social unrest becomes a re-imagining of the spaces we all occupy and a vision of a different shared public environment."

"Girl Mountain is a baby Brit fed on folk in the 80s. He is a member of the comics collective Hyper Color Castle. His style is diaristic and fantastical: equal parts Blake and Paper Rodeo. His songs use consumer electronics and art-school screwball antics to tell a story that is unfinished and dreamlike. This is his first and only NY show. Juarez is an Australian native, but comes to us via the English Channel. She describes her music as, 'synth-Ondes Martenot fuckery and a’capella.' Her songs are angst-ridden, black, and stark. Bring a sweater. Clyde is a performance artist turned musician. Her performances are poetic and uncomfortably anti-spectacular. She will present new industrial music inspired by light artist Dan Flavin and will give you a sneak peak at her upcoming Scream Circle Series. Nathan Whipple may be the hardest working man in young America’s underground art scene. When he is not performing backup for the Experimental People, producing soundtracks for Martha Colburn, or shredding guitars/paper in the art group TRYCRYTRY, he can be lost hand-drawing one hundred identical CD-R covers for his next solo album. Lose yourself in a world of post-apocalyptic vaudeville."

"Versatile Czech artist Frantisek Skala in his new comic book, Cecil’s Quest, depicts in a unique form of 322 photographs the adventurous wandering of easy-going fellow Cecil, who one summer morning decides to visit his friend, anchoress Lída. He has no idea that he will not return before the land is covered with snow, enriched with experiences and new friendships. Skala employed a complex technique of taking photographs of puppets in the outdoor environment using the cine-film resembling the process of animated film production, however, without the comfort of studio facilities and technical equipment. It was similar to the classical feature film production except that Skála accomplished the work of the whole film crew by himself. The technical realization of making each scene into a comic book style shot took almost year and was finished with a very sophisticated method of printing."

Art in Odd Places presents Bodies of Pyongyang, by artist Yoonhye Park, this afternoon. "Most people know who is Kim Jong-il, the dictator of North Korea. However, women in North Korea are hidden and veiled in contemporary context. "Bodies of Pyongyang" is a public live visual art performance installation. Around thirty girls wearing North Korean schoolgirl uniforms are situated inside a (70"x70"x70") clear plexiglass cube box, which is located off a street intersection. These tightly packed schoolgirls try to move about the enclosed cube box expressing their emotional pain and struggle. Red strings symbolizing their dual inner states of suppression and resistance entangle the girls further confining their freedom to move within their already limited and hermetic space." "In 2000 the attempted murders of two Mexican day laborers catapulted a small Long Island town into national headlines, unmasking a new front line in the border wars: suburbia. For nearly a year after the incident, filmmakers Carlos Sandoval and Catherine Tambini lived and worked in the community, documenting their experiences along the way. The result is Farmingville, a work that captures firsthand the stories of residents, day laborers and activists on all sides of the discussion. This timely film challenges viewers to look critically at issues surrounding the 'American Dream'—what does it mean, who is it for, and how is it achieved?"

Theresa Rebeck will read from her new book, Three Girls and Their Brother, tonight in celebration of it's paperback launch. Narrated in four parts from the perspective of each sibling (the three sisters and their brother, Philip) the novel follows the girls' journey from The New Yorker feature to modeling for the industry's most exclusive fashion magazines, attending New York City's trendiest events, and, inevitably, making the front pages of the tabloids. But as the girls go from taking high school chemistry tests to navigating the celebrity talk show circuit, they quickly experience the drawbacks of living in the spotlight. As the struggle for fame threatens to tear the family apart, the siblings learn that, in the celebrity world of viciousness and betrayal, their most important allies are each other."

But if Picasso came to me with a facial injury and I made him into a monster, aha, he might not be so pleased.' This quote expresses the view of the exhibition that plastic surgery can be a most challenging art form, since a surgeon’s materials are not canvas or clay, but rather the human body." Tonight Anthony Berlet, M.D., curator of apexart's current exhibition, discusses historical practices, modern procedures and the fine line between craftsmanship and art in contemporary plastic surgery.
