Municipal Art Society Walking Tour: Night and Light in the City
FreeNYC Event Flyer Date: Thursday, March 5th
Time: 6:30pm
Location: Herald Square (Broadway and 34th St.)
Cost: Free
"Join noted lighting designer Howard Brandston (his commissions include the Statue of Liberty and Battery Park City) for an illuminating walking tour. Electric light can highlight architecture and increase livability, but not all light is created equal. Two sorts of lamps light New York's streets and parks: metal halide, which is white light, and high pressure sodium, which is yellow. This is a chance to experience the contrast between the two and to learn why the streetscape committee of MAS favors white light for the City that never sleeps. Meet at the south end of Herald Square, Broadway and 34th St." More info here.

FreeNYC Event Flyer Date: Friday, March 6th
Time: 12:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center (596 Broadway #602)
Cost: Free
"Harvestworks is pleased to present, Block of Ice + 1/60, a new multimedia performance installation exploring issues of labor and water ecology by 2007 VanLier Fellow, Tobaron Waxman. The work uses the artist's own brainwave patterns, generated while he sleeps in the gallery space, to control a Max/MSP software patch, which will dynamically locate Web images pertaining to water in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The images are then manipulated and projected onto a block of ice using Jitter software. As the projection surface (i.e. the ice block) melts, it is filtered into bottles and made available for the gallery visitors to drink, in order that they may assimilate an aspect of the biofeedback loop into their own body. Each bottle is then made available as a unique artist's multiple, with a label derived from the image projected while it was filled. Proceeds from sale of the multiple go to non-profit organizations addressing issues of labor and/or hydrology."

Betrayal is everywhere on the Pies of March ride. We'll need to beware as the 'NYPD' uses whipped cream pies to thwart the Bike Lane Clowns' mission of demonstrating the environmental damage of polluting transportation as well as their celebration of the beauty of bike riding. "St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints.
Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 461.
Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland, probably Kilpatrick. His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Romans living in Britian in charge of the colonies. As a boy of fourteen or so, he was captured during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. Ireland at this time was a land of Druids and pagans. He learned the language and practices of the people who held him.
During his captivity, he turned to God in prayer. He wrote "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same." "I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain."
Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britian, where he reunited with his family. He had another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling out to him "We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once more." He began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years.
Later, Patrick was ordained a bishop, and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. He arrived in Ireland March 25, 433, at Slane. One legend says that he met a chieftain of one of the tribes, who tried to kill Patrick. Patrick converted Dichu (the chieftain) after he was unable to move his arm until he became friendly to Patrick. Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland, converting many. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country. Kings, their families, and entire kingdoms converted to Christianity when hearing Patrick's message. Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461.
Why a shamrock?
Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and has been associated with him and the Irish since that time."

Drunken! Careening! Writers! is a monthly reading series dedicated to the proposition that readings should be: excellent, well-read pieces that have at least one thing in them that makes people laugh (nervous laughter counts), and don't run more than 15 minutes each. This month they welcome an artist who accompanies himself, Kevin Draine, aka "The Bitter Poet" and his lovely electric guitar; plus return visits from Jami Attenberg, currently on book tour for her new novel, and Staci Swedeen, who had a helluva 2008 with the premier of her one-woman show, "Pardon Me For Living."

Patrick Rimoux Light Sculpture
FreeNYC Event Flyer Date: Thursday, March 19th
Time: 7:00pm
Location: 972 Fifth Avenue (at 78th street)
Cost: Free
"A spectacular outdoor display will light up the façade of the Payne Whitney Mansion on Thursday, March 19, to celebrate la Francophonie and the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City by French settlers. For one night only, the installation created by celebrated French light sculptor Patrick Rimoux for the Centre de la Francophonie des
Amériques in Quebec City will work its magic on 972 Fifth avenue, illuminating a New York City historical landmark designed by architect Stanford White, which is now the headquarters of the French Cultural Services in the United States. Mr. Rimoux will also present an indoor video installation, specially designed for the occasion." The rest of the press release after the jump.
"Two high-powered projectors, giving off 20,000 lumens each, will display an intricate video over the building’s entire façade. The video will combine elaborate visual effects with animated excerpts from francophone literary works, and will run from 7pm to 1am, constantly evolving as the night progresses. According to artist Patrick Rimoux, “Transposing my creation to New York gives more force to the project initiated by the Centre de la Francophonie des Amériques of promoting French throughout the entire
American continent. For me it’s a wonderful opportunity to adorn the iconic Payne Whitney façade, facing Central Park, with words of light from francophone poetry—Quebecois, Canadian, American, Creole, Acadian… It’s a beautiful continuation of this project between Quebec and New York.” Patrick Rimoux’s installation in Quebec City, initially meant to be temporary, has been so successful that it will become a permanent fixture at the Centre de la Francophonie des Amériques, which was inaugurated on October 18, 2008, in the presence of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the Premier of Quebec, Jean Charest.
The lighting of the Payne Whitney Mansion on March 19 is being organized by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, la Maison Française of Washington, D.C., le Centre de la Francophonie des Amériques, the Québec Government Office, the Belgian Tourist Office, the Consulate General of Canada, the Consulate General of Switzerland, the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations, the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations, and TV5. This event is placed under the patronage of the
Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) and will lead up to the International Celebration of la Francophonie which will be celebrated, as every year, on March 20 by over 200 million French-speakers in 68 countries across the world. The language they share embodies their solidarity as they cooperate to promote a globalization that is respectful of cultural differences."

CROOKED DISCO WITH PROJECT JENNY PROJECT JAN
FreeNYC Event Flyer Date: Saturday, March 28th
Time: 10:00pm - 4:00am
Location: Public Assembly (70 N 6th, W'burg)
Cost: $5 with RSVP, $10 Without
Open Bar: Vodka 10:00pm - 11:00pm
We've had a long standing love for Sammy Rubin and Jeremy Haines aka Project Jenny, Project Jan. Their combination of live show, dance party, and visual stimulation has always blown people away at our parties and we thought it was well overdue to have them back. Their kinetic energy inspired Billboard to call Project Jenny, Project Jan’s live show a “shockingly dynamic, danceable, and hilarious affair” and VanityFair.com called the band “awesome” and enthusiastically recommended its show “to anyone with functional knee and elbow joints.” The duo’s originality impressed Ear Farm enough to name Project Jenny, Project Jan one of its top ten bands to watch out for in 2008. Sure enough, that year Project Jenny, Project Jan was featured in the film Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, performing their rowdy crowd-pleaser “Negative.”
Plus, joining us on the decks are NYC's own electro-party mavens, Bradley D & VDRK of Famous Friends. These boys have been throwing parties and spinning all over the cityand with some big, big names lately and tonight they'll bring that energy to Public Assembly with all your favorite indie and electro.
Plus, your hosts and resident Crooked Disco DJs, Morsy and Kestar - back from SXSW and fresh off an amazing new residency at Le Poisson Rouge (thanks for coming out!) hold it down with their trademark mix of Disco, Electro, Classic House, Good Hip-Hop, Baltimore Club, and Breaks (basically, whatever makes you move.)

Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Location: apexart (291 Church Street)

"Leon Dufourmentel, a pioneer in plastic surgery, said in 1948, '...If I went to Picasso for my portrait, he would probably make me a monster and I should be pleased because it would be worth a million francs. But if Picasso came to me with a facial injury and I made him into a monster, aha, he might not be so pleased.' This quote expresses the view of the exhibition that plastic surgery can be a most challenging art form, since a surgeon’s materials are not canvas or clay, but rather the human body." Time: 6:00pm - 11:00pm
Location: Spur Tree (76 Orchard St btw Broome and Grand)
Cost: Free
The rough-edged work of emerging Brooklyn-based photographer JJ Ignotz hits the LES tonight for Cheesecake: The Exhibition. This recent cum laude photography graduate gets a little naughty while daring her viewers to look and then startles them when they do. "The images of partially-clad, provocatively-posed women are anxiety-inducing and addicting. They touch on themes of gender and rebellion, youth and adulthood, fetishism and exhibitionism–all rolled into a bizarre world of shag carpets, wood paneling, and loud wallpaper. The portfolio resembles the original pin-up, but falls short, leaving it to be most closely described as cheesecake. JJ’s portfolio consists of black and white silver gelatin prints on Forteza paper presented as single photographs as well as large scale collages. Prices range from $15 and up for limited edition prints."

Please join The Change You Want To See Gallery for a conversation with renowned philosopher, media activist and cultural agitator Franco Berardi (aka Bifo) and media theorist MacKenzie Wark, author of Game Theory and A Hacker's Manifesto.
Bifo has been a pivotal figure in Italian social movements for that past 40 years. He co-founded the legendary Radio Alice (1977), the first pirate radio station in Italy, the magazine A/Traverso (1977-81), and Rekombinant (2000), an online network environment that focuses on radical philosophy, urban conflicts, media activism, networking art, knowledge economy, western psychopathology, autonomous universities, and institutions of the common. More recently he produced the autonomous street television network Orfeo TV (2002), which sparked a national network of pirate micro TV stations to counter the media monopoly of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
This event marks the long awaited publication of the first two Bifo’s books in English: Felix Guattari: Thought, Friendship, and Visionary Cartography (Palgrave, 2008); and Ethereal Shadows: Communication and Power in Contemporary Italy (with Marco Jacquemet and Gianfranco Vitali, Autonomedia, 2009).
