But I also consider it one of the best places to contemplate life, the universe, and everything. Whether it's because the market is in the dump, your relationship is on the rocks or you're just suffering from that terrible quarter-life crisis, there are no great life decisions that a couple of tall boys and a brief stint on the open water's won't solve. Tonight, Staten Island Museum History Curator Patricia M. Salmon talks about the history of my beloved boat in honor of her aptly-titled new book, The Staten Island Ferry: A History. All Ages

Soon after he arrives, an apparent massive terrorist attack against America darkens the town. Cut off from the world, the town’s militant past is reawakened and forces coalesce to protect citizens from an unseen enemy. The town’s fear leads to the creation of a posse of gunmen, resulting in torture, illegal searches and eventually, murder. Civil liberties and justice itself hang in the balance as the town must decide whether to embrace freedom or fear." Trailer below, limited seating, All Ages.

The masterminds behind the FreeDarko blog on basketball emerge from their self-imposed exile to discuss their new book The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac and provide some unconventional play by play of that night's Knicks-Bulls game tonight. "Much more than a sports blog, FreeDarko prises basketball analysis from the ESPN-tablishment and contorts the game into a McSweeney's-style funhouse of stats and cultural commentary. Using graphs and illustrations, the authors (known pseudonymously as Bethlehem Shoals, Big Baby Belafonte, Brown Recluse Esq., Dr. Lawyer IndianChief and Silverbird 5000) take Serbian NBA player Darko Milicic as their inspiration in a freewheeling, wisecracking and wise exploration of the league's more worldly, transcendental meanings. Here is obsessive sports critique taken to hilarious heights." From your friends at Freebird Books.

Joanna Erdos is known for performing a kind of musical slight of hand by singing stories of epic heartbreak while fooling her listeners into believing that they are having a good time. The heroines in her songs are far crazier than Amy Winehouse and Syd Barett, but they always have more fun on their way down. It's the combination of Joanna's sweaty-sweet alto and her magnificent original music - made up of heart-felt piano-rock songs that sound like Honky Dory era Bowie dancing cheek to cheek with Nick Cave in the bowels of a pirate ship - that provide the melodic hooks and lush vocal harmonies which keep admiring crowds singing along. Tonight she performs with her band, The Midnight Show, in their last show of the year. Video below. 21+

"Over the past two years, Web 2.0 technologies have matured and so have the methods activists use to employ them. In 2008, activists from around the world used Web 2.0 to take command of the digital airwaves pioneering new forms of political mobilization. From Student's for a Free Tibet's live streamed protests in Beijing, to RNC protesters coordinating actions and monitoring police movements on Twitter to mass digital mobilizations for humanitarian relief and election protection, Web 2.0 is no longer just for social networking and fundraising. Tonight, practitioners involved in the above campaigns will present case studies and highlight how they leveraged these tools to have broader reach and greater effectiveness." And if you can't make it, you can stream the whole event live here.

The Ten Commandments, one of Keith Haring’s most powerful series of paintings, will be presented at Deitch Studios, Long Island City, from November 8, 2008 – February 15, 2009. The works portray the Ten Commandments from Haring’s point of view, combining a traditional Biblical interpretation with the artist’s liberating spirit and apocalyptic vision. The Ten Commandments were painted for Haring’s first solo museum show, a 1985 exhibition at the CAPC, Bordeaux, a reconverted wool warehouse with a span of twenty-five foot high archways supporting the roof. Thinking about how to best use the space, known as “the nave,” Haring had the inspiration to order ten tablet shaped canvases to fit within the arches. While on the dance floor at the Paradise Garage the day before leaving for Bordeaux, he had a vision to paint The Ten Commandments.
