Chelsea Art Museum 6th Anniversary Celebration

The Chelsea Art Museum celebrates its sixth anniversary today with free admission and activities all day long. For the young ones, there will be art making workshops from 12-1 with French painters Jean Miotte and Keren Rosenbaum, pioneers of L'Art Informel. And for you big folks there are art exhibitions all day, a curator talk by Nina Colosi at 6:15 pm, a performance by The Wendy Osserman Dance Company 7, and a cocktail party/booksigning with Jean Miotte and jazz performance by Lars Haake and ensemble 6 pm - 9 pm. All ages.

31th Annual White Castle Empire State Golden Arm Tournament of Champions

Today is a very special day in New York, The New York Arm Wrestling Association presents the 31th Annual White Castle Empire State Golden Arm Tournament of Champions. Over 100 men and women will compete for the chance to be crowned Empire State Golden Arm Champion in what is called "New York City’s oldest and most prestigious sought-after title”. The competition begins at 12:30pm and the finals are scheduled for 3:30.

Gringolandia is "an installation, saloon, and full-sensory performance space created by Mickey Western. Built upon the mythos of the Universal Outlaw: The poets, preachers and vigilantes whose moral codes have been determined by an internal value system free from the laws of the state. Saloon Salon includes a western-style saloon façade, a saloon-style bar serving homebrewed beer & liquor, a library of books (by Mickey as well his friends), a functional outhouse and a shooting alley (replete with marshmallow bow & arrow).

Eugen Radescu is an independent curator, co-founder, and co-publisher at Pavilion magazine, president of artphoto asc., and co-director of Bucharest Biennale. Bosko Blagojevic is an artist and writer based in Brooklyn. His writing on art and culture has appeared in a variety of media both online and off, including recently the journals Afterimage, USELESS and Art Asia Pacific, as well as several artist's publications. Tonight, they ask "how innocent is that?" in conversation about the state of innocence in Eastern Europe.

Kirsten Sundberg Lunstrum is the author of two collections of short fiction. This Life She’s Chosen was named a Barnes and Noble: Discover Great New Writers selection for the year. Her second collection, Swimming With Strangers, was published by Chronicle Books in October of 2008. With Jacqueline Kolosov, she is also editor of the anthology The Sincerest Form of Flattery: Contemporary Writers on Forerunners in Fiction. Kirsten’s short fiction has appeared in One Story, The American Scholar, and Willow Springs, among other journals. She has been the recipient of a Walter E. Dakin Fellowship from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and is a Pushcart Prize nominee. In the fall of 2008, she will join the creative writing faculty at Purchase College (SUNY). She lives with her husband, photographer Nathan Lunstrum, and their young son.
Karan Mahajan is the author of Family Planning, which has recently been published by Harper Collins. He graduated from Stanford University with a degree in English and economics and is the recipient of a Joseph Henry Jackson Award, an award offered annually to promising young California writers. He has contributed writing to The Believer, the San Francisco Chronicle, Granta and the New York Sun. He currently lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Behind the Book is a literacy nonprofit working with low-income students in NYC public schools. Our mission is to excite children and young adults about reading. Working in the 1st-12th grades, we bring authors and their books into individual classrooms to build literacy skills and a new generation of book readers.
