Dr. Volk asks: How is CO2 changing the natural world? Can new technologies and new energy sources—carbon sequestration, biomass, solar, wind, and nuclear—hold back the carbon tide? Why are the exhaled breaths of the growing human population not net additions to atmospheric CO2? How much carbon can the world’s oceans and forests hold? What facts should every Earth citizen know about the carbon cycle?" 21+

"Poem in Action captures the world of poet Vincent Ferrini and his commitment to the unity of art and life in what he called “the living poem.” The film portrays the forces that shaped this artist’s life: his immigrant parents; factory work; the Great Depression; the Communist Party; and the town of Gloucester, Massachusetts where he lived until his passing in December 2007. The filmmaker and poet’s nephew Henry Ferrini captured the idiosyncrasies of the man and the ever-changing landscape of their town of Gloucester. Vincent’s passion, magnetic presence, and unyielding creativity make for an energizing portrait of an artist and his community, a poet who is also teacher, historian, spokesman, and social activist. Post-screening discussion with the director led by Fred Gardaphé, Queens College."

“Among bird fanciers the word record is used to signify the first essays of
a bird in singing." Sir John Hawkins... “Any set of transmitted electrical impulses received as a sound or image, e.g. via wires; the message conveyed by them.” Wikipedia, Definition of: Signal, 2006
"Signal-based processing. Interactive improvisation environments. Real-time image to audio synthesizers. Recorder player Terri Hron walks the tightrope of new developments in computer-assisted composition and improvisation. During the course of two years, Terri is experimenting with 7 composers to put together a programme of works which drops the recorder into different corners of the ever-growing realm of electroacoustic music. She is intensely fascinated by the variable degree of interactivity between musician and machine and by the direction of the signal: who is controlling who? Each composer is providing Terri with a different challenge and approach. These are being rounded out by three new pieces by Terri herself, which will not only integrate new ideas growing from the collaborations, but also highlight her instrument’s historical connection with birds."

Book Culture invites you to a reading and celebration of two extraordinary literary achievements at New Indie Novel Night. Lawrence Shainberg (Ambivalent Zen, Memories of Amnesia, Brain Surgeon: An Intimate View of His World) reads from Crust (Two Dollar Radio, October), praised as "one of the most perverse and single-minded satires I've read" by Jonathan Lethem and described by Norman Mailer as "an academic send-up... wild as sin"; Anne Landsman (The Devil's Chimney) reads from The Rowing Lesson (Soho Press, November), which provoked an astonished New York Times Book Review critic to note, "Landsman is a gambler, and here she risks everything" in a feat that, The Guardian (UK) declared, "confirms her reputation as a major new voice."

"Fritz Scholder: Indian/Not Indian is one part of a two-city career retrospective devoted to the late Fritz Scholder (1937-2005, Luiseño), an expressionist painter and sculptor who, beginning in 1960s, reimagined the depiction of Native Americans. In so doing, Scholder became an immensely successful but controversial artist who forever changed how Native Americans could be portrayed. The Heye Center’s exhibition comprises 28 paintings, sculptures, and monotypes that illustrate a lesser known side of the artist’s oeuvre, referencing the erotic and the unconscious, created over nearly three decades. Dominating the presentation, symbolically and literally, is an eight-foot tall bronze sculpture entitled Future Clone (1999). This androgynous angel figure, its wings, face, and globe washed white, is perched atop the marble foyer of the former Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House." The National Museum of the American Indian is one of my favorite places in NYC. No matter the exhibit, this museum is free every and all day. This exhibit runs through August 2009.

Released in December 2007 by the League of Noble Peers, Steal This Film 2 tries to go beyond the current discussions around file-sharing to look at what kinds of social change are precipitated by massive changes in our capacity to communicate. The film argues that the changes wrought by networked, peer distribution are historical on the scale of the printing press and tries to explain why. Tonight the film is screened at NYU but if you cant make it, you can just Steal This Film too. More details after the jump.
For many of you these argument will be familiar. These are strange times, in which to many of us the battle already seems to have been won. Yet governments continue to enact harsh laws expanding the scope of copyright protection and increasing sanctions for its infringement, lawsuits are levied against filesharers, fines imposed and arrests made - all intended to destroy or delay what is an inevitable change in how we look at creative work.
At the same time there has developed a burgeoning area of cultural production outside of both the institution of copyright and the historical channels of distribution, be they television, cinema or music stores. Deep beneath the sand the playing field of culture is shifting, in no small part due to the combined actions of millions of peer produsers.
Alan Toner, one of the peers responsible for the film’s production, will be present for a discussion afterwards, during which there will
also be a demonstration of STF’s footage archive.

"While on assignment for Glamour’s 'Women of the Year' portfolio, photographer Norman Jean Roy was introduced to Somaly Mam, a former Cambodian sex slave who was being honored for her work rescuing women trapped in the sex industry and reintegrating them into society. Overwhelmed by her story and haunted by the faces of the women she’d worked with, Roy decided to spearhead TRAFFIK, a project that would expose and elevate the grave reality and gross injustice of their experiences. In January 2008, Roy returned to Cambodia to begin the emotionally taxing work of photographing the victims of the country’s notorious sex trade[...] TRAFFIK presents images of an industry that doesn’t just sell sex; young women and children are routinely bartered, exchanged, and sold across international borders, resulting in a soulless flow of human traffic. Part exposé and part call to action, Roy’s intimate and affecting photographs are aimed toward giving these victims a voice that will resonate across Cambodia’s borders." Show runs through December 3rd. Preview images here.

Andy Warhol appropriated the everyday pop image into a work of art, added a new layer of meaning to the familiar, and conceded. Warhol and others of the Pop Art movement exposed our subconscious obsession with superficial surfaces. Today advertisers and artists continue to dig deep into what compels consumers visually. However, with the introduction of an educated consumer and heightened visual comprehension advertisers often create as if they are producing works of art. Artists Mikhail Sokovikov and Jason Aaron Wall in their new series titled, Industry Calling, draw influences from advertising, consumerism, and capitalism. The large vinyl on Plexiglas collages contain bold primary colors that crisscross seamlessly across the surface. The result is a hypnotizing design that requires nothing more than a visceral reaction. All Ages.

"Through his hyperrealist paintings and drawings, Travis Louie presents an alternate realm of creatures, chimera, and outcasts dressed in their finest suits. These portraits, created using several transparent acrylic layers over a tight graphite drawing on smooth boards reference old Victorian photographs. The surreality of the imagery is compounded as these eerie beings pose and engage through subtle yet unique human expressions."

"MONO NO AWARE is not a film festival; its focus is the cinematic experience. A program of live music, performance, and audio to accompany 16mm and S8 mm film prints,... NO DIGITAL! “ PRENOTIONS IN RED, WHITE, AND BLUES “
16 MM & SUPER 8 MM / LIVE SOUND ::: Fern Silva / Doron Sadja
The geo-political rise and fall of a future American hero, a vague visionary representation of the assassination of our new president. Conceptually influenced by the 8mm Zapruder film of the assassination of JFK, which made waves around the world, the importance of motion picture. Sound will play a part in this by creating overwhelming psychological collages through feedback, mutated instruments, extreme frequencies, dense splashes of light, color, texture, & action.
“ARCHITECTURE OF THE SUN”
16 MM / LIVE SOUND ::: Brittany Gravely & Jennifer Pipp /
Ken Linehan, Rick Prior, & Sean Andrews
A common affinity for scientific-nostalgic-hallucinatory-mystical-types of sounds, feelings, & imagery leads the way for this group. A collage of electronic-analog sounds respond to sequential images while projections are modified by hand with filters, focus & prisms in response to psychedelic sound. Depending on strategy, but mostly telepathy & synchronicity, the performance unfolds … strange at times, capricious, and surprising to both performers and the audience.
“BLUSH”
SUPER 8 MM / LIVE SOUND ::: Sam Dishy / Lily Pickett
A series of moments captured in a way only Super 8 knows how to do. This film is a simple and pure expression of cinema. A reminder to the audience of the short glances, daydreams, and emotions which carry us through life. The piece will be accompanied by guitar and violin.
“MEKANIKDOLLS”
16 MM & SUPER 8 MM / LIVE SOUND & PERFORMANCE
Seyhan Muaoglu & Jess Ramsay
Abandon all conventions associated with performance as the boundaries between audience & artist are blurred in a roomful of film projections, sounds, contemporary dance & audience participation. Projectors, an array of analog devices, digital instruments, & live sampling of sounds help marry technology with obsolete media. Driven by fascination and obsession of all mediums, the visual language is expanded upon expressing the beauty of film, cinema as experience.

"Veterans of the 80’s downtown music scene, Band of Outsiders disbanded 20 years ago this month. (Their farewell CBGB gig, with Nikki Sudden sitting in, became a live album named for the date, Armistice Day.) Reformed to play the recent Cake Shop benefit for Bush Tetras bassist Laura Kennedy, this “quintessential NY guitar group” (Bucketful Of Brains) is sticking together long enough for an encore set tonight." 21+
