"A celluloid portrait-in-progress is transformed into a riotous playground for the Cinema’s past in Outtakes,[Marie] Losier’s endlessly creative, hands-on installation devoted to industrial rock pioneer Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, Thee Majesty) and his partner Lady Jaye. Constructed almost entirely of unused clips and sound bites from Losier’s upcoming feature film, The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, Outtakes puts the forlorn footage to work in the service of a whimsical retelling of film history — one in which the transformative Genesis P-Orridge is its unlikely star." SHULTES (2008, 100 min)
by Bakur Bakuradze
25-year-old Lyosha Shultes is a former athlete who, after suffering serious trauma in a car accident, becomes a pick-pocket. Theft becomes his only mode of communication with the outside world. In his life there is no place for love, friendship, or loyalties. Screened at Festival de Cannes, 2008 (Directors’ Fortnight)
TAG (2008, 13 min)
by Natalia Uglitskikh
A comedy in its barest form.
“Natalya Ugliskikh … possesses the rare talent of being able to evoke sympathy and laughter in her viewers using minimalist and laconic language.” —Kirill Razglozov, Moscow International Film Festival
TASYA (2007, 17 min)
by Roman Artemyev
Her name is Tasya. He misses a train, and finds himself her unwitting guest. “Roman Artemyev [an actor by training] shot his first film as an independent director without any assistance from public or private sponsors – this fact says a lot about his character. What makes Tasya so notable compared to other debut works is its calm and almost Bunin-like intonation, as well as its deep understanding of the nuances of human relationship. Roman’s very first film demonstrated his interest in classical cinema (including Russian classical cinema) and a high visual culture. ”
–Marina Razbezhkina, award-winning filmmaker
WHAT IS THE YEAR... (2007, 26 min)
by Valeria Ivanovskaya
In this short film, eschewing dialogue and employing a unique visual vocabulary, Ivanovskaya explores the fate of two families during an unnamed war. Andrei Gerasimov, President of the Higher Academy for Screenwriting and Directing, Moscow, writes, “[Ivanovskaya’s] works are distinguished first and foremost by their exact stylistic approach and interest in the development of film language, which is rare in Russian film and is undoubtedly her triumph.”

"Don your wig, strap on a mask, and save your inhibitions for next year's office party." At tonight's Whig and Masque review, anonymity is the name of the game... quite literally. Arive early in your best disguise, and drop your innermost secret into the hat. At 9pm sharp, all will be revealed in the anonymous "secret ceremony." Now that you've got that off your chest, drink and dance the night away with the rest of the brave spirits. Quite a nice blurb from the event hosts below. 21+
"You deserve to be happy. You have earned the right to dance like a fool and entertain strangers with those secrets you rarely admit to yourself. You just write it down, drop it in the bag, then somebody else will read it later in the evening and take it as their own. What do you get in exchange for giving up one of your biggest secrets? Well, you get to feel better now that it's off your chest, you get to feel better cause your secret isn't as bad as the other one you heard, and you get a chance to have your dream randomly selected by the group.
The dream that's picked becomes our focus for the next month and we'll do everything we can to make it come true. What constitutes a dream? That's for you to decide. Whether your dream is to have a million dollars in cold hard cash, or a cold hard handjob by George W, we'll do what we can. Who you are is irrelevant. What you've done in the past does not matter. What you want now is precious.
Don your wig, strap on a mask, and save your inhibitions for next year's office party."

Irving Welsh - author of Trainspotting, Filth, and half a dozen other books on my shelf - is back with his latest, Crime. “Crime is as close to an Ian Rankin novel as Welsh seems likely to write…..It’s like Lolita in reverse: this European man takes to the highways of the South not to escape the law but to protect a vulnerable young girl from other men…. Welsh applies his unique artistic gifts to a more conventional story line and succeeds admirably.” Find out all you've every wanted to know about the mind of Mr. Welsh at tonight's reading and book signing.

Once again the New York Buddhist Church adopts the Japanese tradition by floating paper lanterns to honor loved ones lost at Ground Zero. "The ancient custom of floating lighted lanterns in waterways symbolizes respect for the lives of people who have gone before us. It also represents a light of hope for peace and harmony that we send over the waters of transmigration. This very colorful, but quiet and serene ceremony provides a place to reaffirm our commitment to building a peaceful future and to pay respect to the lost lives at the World Trade Center."

Back in 2005 I took a ride up to Boston for a Glowlab event and was blown away. While familiar with its tenants, the term psychogeography (the investigation of everyday urban life through emerging artistic, technological and social practice) was new to me. What followed was a weekend of lectures, films, workshops, art installations, tours, and parties dedicated to reimagining and reclaiming our urban spaces. This weekend Glowlab takes over New York City with Conflux 2008, their "annual New York City festival for contemporary psychogeography." While the details are too in depth to list here, check the site for all the locations, events, and info. Note that some events this year have an admission fee but most do not. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The audience travels with the performers from the west side to the east side of the park where they are later led by a marching band to the Brooklyn Bridge."

More party than book event, Deitch Projects celebrates the release of Dash Snow and Dan Colen's Nest and Kembra Pfahler's Beautalism tonight with live performances by The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black and Cheeseburger at the Santos Party House space. Dash Snow and Dan Colen host along with special guests Armen Ra on theramin and Edgar Oliver. Expect the art community out in full force, as usual. More on the books below.
NEST
This book catalogues the infamous NEST exhibition by artists Dash Snow and Dan Colen, where they turned Deitch Projects into a giant hamster nest. Along with many downtown artists in their community, Dash and Dan filled the space with over 3000 shredded phone books, and then in multiple overnight celebrations, destroyed the gallery to create a complex performance piece and earthwork. With paint poles speared into the wall, bottles protruding from hacked-up sheet rock, and a pummeling of enormous wine, pee, and paint spit-balls stuck to the walls, it seems a great deal took place during these night-into-mornings. Dark and brutal spray paint slogans commingle with moments of love and tenderness as both sentiments go into creating this ambiguous dwelling that also served as a nest for Dash Snow’s new baby Secret, born the night before the opening. Designed by Dash Snow, this book features gritty behind-the scenes photos by him and his friends of the creation of this work and the performances that took place to celebrate it. Legend Alan Vega performs with downtown band A.R.E. Weapons at the closing party in one section, while another covers another New York City band Gang Gang Dance performing at the opening.
BEAUTALISM
This is artist Kembra Pfahler’s first book in her amazing thirty-year underground New York City art career. Cataloguing her recent projects for the 2008 Whitney Biennial, which included a huge rock show in the Park Avenue Armory, this book also features her most notorious body art performances and shocking “sewn Vagina” and “wall of vagina” pieces. Numerous full bleed photos capture the making of the Biennial artworks, the preparation for her live show, the performance itself, and the aftermath. Also included are images of her drawings, sculpture, and installations.

"Founded in 1989 and performing for free in the city parks since 1994 Circus Amok brings to New York City's diverse neighborhoods, streets, and playing fields free, provocative, entertaining public art that addresses the contemporary social justice issues that touch New Yorkers -- immigration, public schools, affordable housing, healthcare access, police brutality, the environment, and the war in Iraq." Their newest creation, "Sub-Prime Sublime," kicks off today and tackles the nationwide morgage debacle as it's topic. Video and more dates/locations below.

"In June 2007, the Calandra Institute co-sponsored a retrospective of new Italian-American cinema as part of the 43rd Festival of New Cinema in Pesaro, Italy, under the artistic direction of Giovanni Spagnoletti. Film scholar Giuliana Muscio of the University of Padua curated a selection of films made after the so-called “new Hollywood” generation of Italian-American filmmakers such as Michael Cimino, Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma, and Martin Scorsese... September 2008, the Calandra Institute and the Pesaro Festival of New Cinema will present an updated version of the retrospective in New York City... During the New York festival, many of the questions raised in Pesaro will continue to be investigated: What is an Italian-American film language? What are the elements of its style, its recurrent visual motifs, the poetics of its images? How does Italian-American cinema find its place among other hyphenated American cinema? What are its specific and shared themes? " You can download the PDF with full festival line up here.

Seriously, open bar and chances to catch the Philharmonic aside, this may be one of the coolest things I've gotten to post all week. The show is a stunning jazz-ethnic performance of an orchestra of 21 people, with a video backdrop taking you to an ideal trip to Sardinia. "While researching for a film project, Italian director Gianfranco Cabiddu accidentally discovered lost footage of life in Sardinia in the 1930s. This is now vividly re-animated in this collaboration with the celebrated Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu in Sonos ‘E Memoria. Music is at the core to this beautiful show. Performed live by a stellar gathering of singers and musicians that embraces the island’s robust tradition, four men steeped in the unique polyphony of the island. With the launeddas, a distant relation of the uilleann pipes providing an expressive and haunting voice, they are joined by an island diaspora led throughout by Fresu’s lyrical trumpet, evoking Miles Davis as much as his native Sardinia."

Part of Video DUMBO, part of Art Under The Bridge, Twitter and Current come together to bring you the coolest debate watching ever... Hack the Debate is "the very first integration of real-time Twitter messages (aka "tweets") over major portions of the live TV broadcast of McCain vs. Obama. For visual enhancement, video_dumbo will transform the Broadcast into 3D!" It's all part of a bigger program that kicks off at 7:30 and ends with a dance party featuring DJ $mall ¢hange. (Note, I've been told this is free but can't find proof anywhere so if you're mega tight on cash, you may want to call up) Much more info below.
As Twitter users tweet (via the web and their phones) throughout the course of the live broadcasts, Current and Twitter will collect comments regarding the debate and layer the individual messages over the debate feed.
“This election will be one of the most massively shared events in history,” says Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. “Experience has shown us that Twitter shines brightest during shared events. With 37 members of Congress, both candidates, groups of activists, and a nation of citizens all sharing their opinions and actions in real-time over Twitter, we have an opportunity with Current to add some valuable features to democracy.”
In addition, the debate will appear in three dimensional space, based on a new polarized filter technique called Chroma-depth®. Ironically, this stereoscopic system is based on the colors RED and BLUE. Each object displayed in those colors will create the illusion of either protrude out of the screen, or retract behind the screen - creating a true stage for this political theater!
More information about “Hack the Debate” is at http://www.current.com/debate and http://www.twitter.com/current

Silent Raves be damned, The MP3 Experiment is one of the coolest things you could possibly do today. Head out to Governors island (and - for real - get there early because it all goes off like clockwork) with a umbrella, an uninflated baloon, and either a red, blue, yellow, or green shirt. Download the mp3, drop it in your iPod and - at the right moment, press play. What will ensue aftwards is anyone's guess but it is a guided afternoon of games, mayhem, and fun. The MP3 experiment has been going on for a few years now thanks the good folks at Improv Everywhere and its always a blast. A little confused, more instruction below (including download link and Governor's Island directions) but mystery is most of the fun! All Ages.
Note: The filename for the track is “mp3experiment_nyc.mp3″ and the album, artist, and track name will be “Mp3 Experiment 5.”

6. Bring a watch with a second hand (or use your cell phone if it displays seconds.) Before you leave, sync it up to this atomic clock:
New York
(If your browser doesn’t show the clock above, you can use this link to get the correct time; note that the hour is off, but the minute and seconds are correct.)
7. As 3:15 approaches, take a seat anywhere on the island. You can sit on the ground, a bench, wherever. Spread out and don’t sit too close to others who look like they might be a part of it.
8. At exactly 3:15 PM, press play.
Directions to Governor’s Island: Detailed directions to Governor’s Island as well as the ferry schedule are located here. The island is located in the New York Harbor, just south of Lower Manhattan. The last possible ferry to take is 3 PM, but if you arrive that late you run the risk of the ferry being full. The island is absolutely beautiful, so arrive a couple of hours early and take a leisurely tour before the experiment. There is food and drink available for purchase, and there are public restrooms.
