DanceBrazil, at the suggestion of the late Alvin Ailey, was founded in 1977 by choreographer Jelon Vieira, who is widely credited for introducing Afro-Brazilian dance and Capoeira to the US. The evening will feature a performance of “Ritmos”, Mr. Vieira’s homage to Capoeira. Max Pollak inventively melds Latin rhythms, jazz, tap dance, and body percussion to create RumbaTap, a company comprised of a multi-talented, international cast. Pollak, named one of “25 to Watch in 2007” by Dance Magazine, is also responsible for conceiving the first-ever tap festival in Cuba. So here it is, MY favorite free outdoor show of the summer. Forget all they summer's hyped artists and and reunion shows, give me Zimbabwean guitarist Oliver Mtukudzi any day. "Tuku" is another one of those random artists handed to me years ago, on a blank CD, that has since become an inspiration to me in life and work. If I can recommend one free, outdoor show this summer - especially for fan's of guitar music, global music, or simply the power of music - it's this one. Tuku is joined by "heirs to the Malian music throne Habib Koité & Bamada and Daby Touré, Yossi Fine’s funk-infused pan African approach and Extra Golden, who combine traditional Kenyan Benga with indie rock" at this, the most eclectic African festival ever. Schedule Below. All Ages.

Another weekend closer at the McCarren Pool with Black Lips, Deerhunter, King Kahn and His Shrines, Tall Firs, and DJ sets by Dirty Finger. Giant Step presents a day of performances that bring urban funk, soul, and R&B into the sunlight. Featuring live music by Jamie Lidell, Janelle Monáe, Little Jackie, Jose James, and DJ sets by the amazing Gilles Peterson. More info on the artists below.
After establishing himself as an underground sonic scientist with an electronica pedigree, Jamie Lidell’s second album, Multiply, awakened even the most cynical critics of blue-eyed soul. Lidell’s voice has been compared to a blended cocktail of Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye, Prince and Stevie Wonder. His recently released record, Jim, places Lidell’s vocal excellence at the center of a soulful journey through Motown ballads and urban funk to the electronic peripheries of modern sound.
Wondaland Arts Society, artist, Janelle Monáe was recently signed by Sean "Diddy" Combs to Bad Boy Records, and her upcoming album Metropolis, co-produced by Big Boi, promises to be an exciting debut. A charismatic performer, Monáe has an innovative style that cannot be classified, crossing the genres of R&B, funk, and rock 'n' roll. She collaborated with OutKast for the movie soundtrack Idlewild.
Channeling the voice of Gil Scott Heron, Jose James brings a fresh voice to jazz with his debut album, The Dreamer. As a potent composer and songwriter, he has adroitly mastered re-interpretations like “Park Bench People,” from 90’s rap collective, Freestyle Fellowship, as well as his own compositions.
Imani Coppola and Adam Pallin are Little Jackie. With a blend of old-school R & B, a quirky injection of hip-hop and Cyndi Lauper-esque pop, the duo takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to social absurdities.
Record label owner, music enthusiast and DJ, Gilles Peterson’s notoriety stems from his global acclaim as one of the music industry’s leading tastemakers. Known for blending various music genres such as jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul, and latin, Gilles airs weekly on BBC’s Radio 1. He continues to support and promote artists through his popular broadcasts and the newly formed record label, Brownswood Records.
The MLK Jr. Concert series continues bringing live music to the BK masses tonight with special guest Erykah Badu. Badu fuses the jazz, R&B an hip-hop influences of a lifetime, and does so not only with her voice, but with many talents: writing, producing, directing, poetry, dance, drama, and visual arts. To her fans, peers and even to numerous of her own artistic idols, Badu is a new icon because her work has proven not merely entertaining, but empowering.

Once again, I totally forget to post the event that I will be at tonight (that is, after I girl out at the Tift Merritt concert). But that doesn't mean you should overlook a rare NYC DJ set from the UK's own Adam Freelance at the weekly GBH party. As a solo artist, one half of Tsunami One, and head honcho of Marine Parade records, Adam has a longstanding reputation as one of the world's premier breakbeat DJs. His unique style fuses electro, funk, nu breaks, rock, and hip hop into a whirlwind of party beats. He's remixed everyone from The Doors to The Orb and has released chart topping club stormers such as the classic "We Want Your Soul." Personally, I have not seen him since he blew me away at Coachella a few years back and - add the rarity of breakbeat DJs in the state - you've got one nice night. The Brooklyn-based theater company, Woodshed Collective presents Caridad Svich's Twelve Ophelias for free at McCarren Park Pool. "Twelve Ophelias centers on Hamlet's Ophelia coming back to life, out of the water, to try to overcome her history and forge a new destiny for herself. She finds herself in an Appalachian Elsinore, Denmark by way of Deliverance—where Gertrude runs a brothel, Hamlet and Horatio slum it, and nothing is what it seems. In this squarely American and gritty interpretation of the Hamlet myth, Twelve Ophelias asks how it is possible to break old cycles and start afresh when the past so completely permeates your life." One of the really satisfying things over here at FreeNYC is watching the bands that we love grow from playing small venues to monster sized ones. Take this afternoons McCarren Pool show with the Felice Brothers for example. They first showed up on our radar back in 2006 with a couple intimate, and amazing, shows to about 50 friends at Pete's Candy Store. Now, they bring their Upstate fueled Americana to the thousands. They've been compared to some of the great American songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Woodie Guthrie but their sound is as applicable to our time as it was there's. The Brothers are joined this afternoon by Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Langhorne Slim, & Deertick. All Ages.

"Monica Bill Barnes’ Game Face compares the show business motto of 'the show must go on with the current day’s view of high-finance business as an all-consuming self-sacrificing endeavor. Exploring a performer’s endurance and “do or die” attitude as an illustration of Wall Street’s reputation for tireless work, this new work is bizarre, exhausting and boldly funny. A cast of eight dancers is decked out in costumes inspired by Broadway musicals and larger-than-life Vegas shows. The audience will witness the effort and fatigue that result from 'performing' as the dancers fight against the odds with hilarious and heartbreaking results." All Ages.

In 1990 along with Stretch Armstrong, they started the Hip Hop radio show at WKCR 89.9 FM, and by '98 the Source Magazine voted them the 'Best Hip Hop Radio Show of All Time'... As a club DJ, crowds worldwide from China to South Africa have celebrated his unique blend of Rare Funk, Latin, Afro-Beat, Soul, Classic Rock, House, and Ballads."
The MLK Jr. Concert Series continues bringing live music to the BK masses tonight with special guest Jill Scott. She's upfront, in-your-face always real, using her own distinctive poetry to breathe life into words, digging inside to bring forth the accompanying emotion." So the Bob Dylan show is well sold out and, no, we don't have some magic ticket printing button to get you all in for free. What I can tell you, however, is that despite that obnoxious black fence the put around the bandshell exclusively for pay shows (come on guys, it's not like you can sell any more tickets) you can still grab a blanket, pack a picnic, and hang out with the hundreds on the lawn outside and listen to the show. This one should be filled with Park Slope residents so early arrival for good blanket space is suggested. All Ages

itsnotyouitsme:
“The four works on “walled gardens” are instrumental meditations that draw
heavily on early Minimalist techniques, most notably repetition and
gradual expansion. Repeating figures often continue without transformation
and gradually melt into the ambient haze as new layers of violin, guitar
and electronic sound are added.” (Allen Koznin, New York Times review of
walled gardens)
Mark Dancigers:
“The New York Youth Symphony premiered his Snow in Carnegie Hall in 2006.
The Cabrillo Festival Orchestra performed his Liquid Song in August 2006,
and the Minnesota Orchestra read the same piece in May 2006. The Yale
Philharmonia Orchestra premiered Liquid Song in March 2005. NOW Ensemble
performed Cloudbank at the 2006 Carlsbad Festival and and Hanging There at
the 2005 Look and Listen Festival in New York. Other performances of his
work have been at the Music at the Anthology Festival, Merkin Hall, the
Virginia Arts Festival, the Percussive Arts Society International
Conference, and venues throughout New York, Boston, New Haven, and
Philadelphia.”
Timberbrit:
“Straight from her latest barely clothed fiasco, Britney Spears is coming
to New York. On Sunday, March 16, “TimberBrit,” an opera telling the (as
yet) fictional story of the rekindled love between Spears and her former
beau Justin Timberlake, will receive its world premiere. To create the
songs, composer Jacob Cooper listened to hits from Spears’s oeuvre at a
very slow speed, eliminating the hooks from the slickly produced tracks,
and wrote his own songs inspired by the experience.” (Adam Rathe, The
Brooklyn Paper)
Alex Sopp:
“New York-based flutist Alex Sopp performs all different genres of music
and was recently called “outstanding” and “an admired new music mainstay”
by Time Out New York. Alex has commissioned, premiered, and recorded with
some of the most exciting composers and songwriters of our time, including
Björk, Nico Muhly, Sufjan Stevens, Philip Glass, Judd Greenstein, The
National, and makes professional appearances with The New York
Philharmonic and The Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Alex is a member of NOW
Ensemble, The Knights, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME),
AXIOM, and has performed with the Mark Morris Dance Group Music Ensemble
and Continuum. In the not-so-distant future Alex will make her solo
recording debut with an album on the newly-minted New Amsterdam label.”
Matt Marks and the Li’l Death Band:
“I attended the Eastman School of Music for undergrad, the Royal Academy
of Music for a bit of the Post-Grad, and am currently attending Stony
Brook University for my Master’s. I am an active performer in New York
City, also playing and composing wacky electronic music, and occasionally
performing on piano. Oh and I’m a Doggo virtuoso. I live in Kensington,
Brooklyn and enjoy reading, listening to my CDs/mp3s/records, walking
around New York, and writing zany bios.” (from his Alarm Will Sound bio)

It's a whole day of home-grown bands that have garnered an international reputation as experimental sonic groundbreakers as Battles, Black Dice, & Gang Gang Dance all take the stage in Central Park this afternoon. More on the bands below. All Ages.
Battles ignores the rules of tempo and timing, creating an abstract and timeless blend of instrumentation, computerized beats, and manipulated voices to craft a uniquely organized sound. In 2006, the band released their debut album EP C/B EP, a collection of obscure EP releases. Their new full length album, Mirrored, has attracted international acclaim.
Black Dice formed at the Rhode Island School of Design a decade ago and have released two albums: Broken Ear Record and Manoman. Now based in Brooklyn, the sonic groundbreakers push the limits of experimental sound in rock music by focusing on only a few notes per song mixed with doses of distortion.
Gang Gang Dance is a much-revered leader in the NYC indie-rock scene, known for crafting haunting minimalist collages of sound. The band surreptitiously utilizes tribal influences, techno instrumentation, and the power of silence to evoke a frenzied mood of anticipation. GGD has performed with Sonic Youth, Massive Attack, Black Dice, and TV on the Radio.

Does Pandamonium have a twitter?
Yes, we do! Click here
Which beer company is sponsoring the event?
None! This is a self-organized, self-directed, and self-funded endeavor.
Why should I bring a radio or boombox?
Good question! Our cyber-pandas will deploy a musical transmission system that allows you to play our music from your very own handheld radios and boomboxes. This means that the sound will come forth in a decentralized fashion, ensuring the longevity of the festivities should any “complications” arise.
Should I bring my bike?
If you want. There will be a panda bike crew so you will be able to ride in style with other pandas.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are one of those bands that I will go see every time they play. Their "throw-back soul" vibe is straight up, feel good, fun music. For those of you unfamiliar, the Dap Kings have recently been moonlighting as Amy Winehouse's backup band and are as instrumental in her vintage sound as was Mr. Ronson. Of course, Ms. Winehouse has nothing on the soul queen herself, Sharon Jones. Now in her 50s this vocal powerhouse is as contemporary as ever. Tonight they close out this seasons Summerstage with fellow Brooklyn soul/funk masters Menahan Street Band and Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens. All Ages.

This afternoon's performers:
Barry Harris Trio
Jazz legend and renowned teacher Barry Harris joins up with Leroy Williams on drums and master bassist Don Thompson to create the Barry Harris Trio. Harris’ soulful voice and lyrics have been a prominent influence in the bebop jazz community. In 2006, Harris and Thompson both received Lifetime Achievement awards at the Art of Jazz Celebrations.
Charles McPherson
American jazz alto saxophonist Charles McPherson has been a key player in the jazz scene for over four decades. McPherson got his start studying music under Barry Harris in Detroit and since then has gone on to perform around the world. He was also the featured alto saxophonist in the Clint Eastwood film, “Bird,” a biography about Charlie Parker. The New York Times describes McPherson as “a singular voice who has never sacrificed the fluidity of his melody making, and is held in high esteem by musicians both long seasoned and young.”
Vanessa Rubin
Jazz musicians are talking about Vanessa Rubin. They all want her unique phrasing and velvety smooth tone to make their compositions come alive. After leaving Cleveland and moving to New York, she almost immediately began gigging with greats like the Pharaoh Sanders Quartet. She has eight albums to her credit, and has amassed a list of outstanding collaborations, partnering with Lionel Hampton, the Mercer Ellington Orchestra and Grover Washington, Jr. Ms. Rubin recently completed international tours with Herbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.
Rashied Ali
Rashied Ali is the father of “free jazz” drumming and one of the most harmonic and innovative drummers to ever grace the world of jazz. He has sat in and collaborated with many R&B and jazz experimenters, most famously with the great John Coltrane. As the leader of the Rashied Ali Quintet, he continues to refine his art while discovering and nurturing new talent.
Robert Glasper
Pianist Robert Glasper is a perfect example of how old and new school can create the future. Classically trained, but moved by his own muse, Glasper has commanded the stage of jazz festivals throughout the world. The profundity of Glasper’s talent is no longer a secret, making him an in-demand musician for numerous hip hop and R&B greats including Mos Def, Common, Jay Z, Erykah Badu and Me’Shell Ndegeocello. Robert Glasper’s three albums have been met with widespread acclaim and his most recent, In My Element, has been called “ravishing.”

Cali's Deth P. Sun is back with a solo show in NYC. It's been two years since his last so check out what he's been up to tonight... "Deth P. Sun's acrylic paintings on panels bring epic landscapes and cosmic occurrences into a private and personal world. Influenced by David Attenborough, as well as the Moomin series and films of Terry Gilliam, the Oakland-based artist seeks to create a fantasy world as a reflection of his own experiences and worldview. It is a place where cold mountains loom under the stars, cloaked figures arrive with the night, and lone dreamers struggle--a place where hope and belief still shine in dark times. For I See It All, Sun is reaching into his sketchbook for the loosest, most natural ideas to realize and make public." All Ages.

Randy Weston
Inspired by Jamaican roots and global travels, Randy Weston’s jazz is like none other. Although Weston cites Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk as inspirations, what makes him unique is his unusually percussive and highly rhythmic piano compositions. In 2002, Weston performed with bassist James Lewis for the inauguration of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt. In June 2006, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Music by Brooklyn College, CUNY. His great compositions include "Hi-Fly," "Little Niles," "Berkshire Blues," "African Sunrise," "The Healers," "Blue Moses," and "African Cookbook."
Jerry Gonzalez and Fort Apache
“I am bilingual…I can play blues and I can play Rumba,” says Jerry Gonzalez of his multi-cultural sound. After several attempts at finding a musical home, Gonzalez finally found his voice in his own band. Their 1989 release, Rumba Para Monk, received critical acclaim and was honored by The Academie Du Jazz, naming it “Jazz Album of the Year.” They have also been nominated for two Latin Jazz Grammy’s for Rumba Para Monk and Y Los Pyratas de Flamenco.
Eric Lewis
With profound intensity, Eric Lewis is already a prodigious jazz pianist. A musical contortionist, Lewis’ compositions twist, turn, and careen between styles, sounds, and emotions, resulting in a stunning aural experience. At the age of 22, Lewis began touring with legends Wynton Marsalis and Cassandra Wilson. At the age of 26 he won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition and became a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Mr. Lewis will perform a work specially commissioned by City Parks Foundation to premier at the 2008 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival.
Gretchen Parlato
Herbie Hancock says of Gretchen Parlato’s voice that it is “a deep, almost magical connection to the music.” She combines classic Sinatra-esque vocals with insightful forays into melodey, unexpected scatting and Afro-Latin rhythms. In 2004 she walked away with first place at the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition and has teamed up with Diane Reeves, Roy Hargrove’s Big Band and Terence Blanchard. All About Jazz magazine has called Gretchen Parlato’s vocal musings “delicious.”

Giant Step continue their bi-weekly, Monday evening, house music throwdowns tonight with seminal Chicago producer Ron Trent. "A perennial presence in music since the early 90's and a long time Giant Step family member, Ron Trent pulls no punches! Considered to be one of the architects of the Chicago music scene, Ron's breakthrough first release was the highly recognized classic 'Altered States' in 1990. In the early 90's, Ron collaborated with House/R&B team Hula & Fingers, producers for Jive records and with Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Kool Mo D, High Five, Lidell Townsend and MTF. Ron's sound expanded in 1997 with the release of the dance classic 'Ncame U.' With writing partner Anthony Nicholson, famed vocalist D'bora, and Peven Everett on trumpet, this record launched Ron onto the NYC dance scene. He quickly gained respect as a DJ/Producer by doing various gigs at Body and Soul, Shelter and hosting his own events at the legendary nightclub Vinyl in downtown Manhattan." 21+

26 years ago, Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz began the Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series to bring outdoor entertainment to the BK Masses. Tonight, the series concludes with legendary soul singer Patti LaBelle. All Ages.
Beautiful, simply does not describe the incomparable force known to the world as Patti LaBelle. As time continues to evolve, the soulful songbird's name has become synonymous with grace, style, elegance and class. Belting out classic rhythm and blues renditions, pop standards and spiritual sonnets have created the unique platform of versatility that Ms. Patti is known and revered for. As she continues into her fourth decade of performing, the Philadelphia maven has returned to her roots with her latest project, The Gospel According to Patti LaBelle. "I was born gospel, so it's not like I'm coming back or trying to impress people with this new gospel project. I've always done this. I've never done a whole album. That's the only thing that's missing," observes the songstress. "I've come full circle where you can say it's a complete project."
Always on her heart, coupled with ten years of mental preparation, timing has always been the key component amidst Patti's busy schedule to complete this life inspired album. "Because of Bud's (longtime Musical Director and friend, Budd Ellison) situation, and I always wanted him to be involved with my gospel project because he was involved in all of my CD's, I said I better start now because he's slowly going away. That was my real reason for starting it."
Sadly, Bud Ellison passed away from prostate cancer before the completion of the album. Patti has dedicated this album to his loving memory in addition to donating all the proceeds to a variety of cancer organizations. "We're praying it is going to be one of my bigger albums that I won't be paid for. In a way, my payback will be we sold so many records and this money went to cancer research."
The first co-singles possess sure-fire messages within the music. "Anything," co-written by Patti and longtime collaborator Sami McKinney, produced by Nisan Stewart features gospel duo Mary Mary, producer/lyricist Kanye West and his latest protégé Consequence. With its pulsating drumbeat, its inspirational message of being able to accomplish anything as a child of the King resonates. "Where Love Begins" featuring Yolanda Adams is a groovy mid-tempo written by legendary songwriter Denise Rich and co-produced by Troy Taylor and Gordon Chambers. Guitar riffs and handclaps stir the encouraging words "deep from within, because that's where love begins."
