The New York April Fools' Day Parade was created in 1986 to remedy a glaring omission in the long list of New York's annual ethnic and holiday parades. These events fail to recognize the importance of April 1st, the day designated to commemorate the perennial folly of mankind. In an attempt to bridge that gap and bring people back in touch with their inherent foolishness, the parade annually crowns a King of Fools from parading look-alikes. The parade will be led by President George Bush and his entire cabinet. They will be given a 60-second lead and then pursued by an outraged lynch mob. This will be followed by a Macy's Day Parade-size helium balloon of a B52 Bomber Equipped with Nuclear Missiles flying overhead as the April Fools' Day Parade Marching Band plays Woody Guthrie's "So Long, It's Been Good to Know You." The Parade's Grand Marshall will be Ralph Nader, appropriately dressed as The Jester." More below.
This year's floats will be led Mardi Gras-style by Angelo Mozilo, CEO of Countrywide Financial, and instead of beads his Loan Shark Cronies will toss out loans you can't refuse to the crowd; Michael Vick will be taking bets on his Dog Fight Float with caged, snarling pit bulls; a Chinese Dry-Cleaning Float will feature Roy Pearson screaming, "Where are my pants? I'm going to sue!"; an Archeological Dig float designed by James Cameron will feature Jesus and Mary's Bones; a Tourette's Syndrome Float will feature radio personality Don Imus, political pundit Ann Coulter, the Reverend Louis Farrakhan, radio talk show host Bill Cunningham, and Dog the Bounty HunterÑall shouting obscenities at the crowd; and a Mayflower Hotel Suite Float featuring New York Governor Eliot "Dickhead" Spitzer surrounded by hookers while promising "I will work hard to win back your trust".
Marching celebrity fool look-alikes will include Senator Larry Craig insisting, "I'm not gay!"; Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore insisting, "I am gay"; Cheney Aide Scooter Libby pleading "Pardon me, pardon me!"; disruptive political protestor Andrew Meyer surrounded by cops screaming, "Don't tase me, bro"; ex-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales asserting, "To the best of my recollection, I don't remember anything"; baseball great Roger Clemens protesting, "I never used steroids!"; ex-cop Drew Peterson calling for his missing wife to "Come home, just come home"; contagious TB world traveler Andrew Speaker coughing on the crowd; and a dazed Britney Spears looking for the Halloween Parade.
Color commentary will be provided by ex-Philadephia TV newscaster Alicia Lane in a thong bikini. Security this year will be provided by mercenaries courtesy of Blackwater.
As the parade ends in Union Square, the party begins, featuring live music, food, concessions & entertainment. The Chinese Government will be sponsoring a Food and Drug Concession and a Chinese Pet Food Booth. The USDA will be giving away free hamburgers. Attorney General Michael Mukasey and the CIA will provide free demonstrations of Waterboarding. Sex offender Deb LaFave will run a Day Care Center for paraders' children. And OJ Simpson and his posse will hawk his sports memorabilia to raise money for next year's parade.
We are grateful to the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and private funders for their support of this year's parade.

"In The Electric Image: After the End of Photography, Chris Kitze explores the intersections of technology, media and popular culture. Investigating urban centers where store windows and monumental advertising images are a worldwide phenomenon and a part of modern mythology, Kitze reveals how the numerical representation of imagery makes it possible for everything and anyone to be everywhere. With the four-by-five-foot backlit images that will be featured in each window of The powerHouse boilerRoom, Kitze’s work illustrates the transformation and globalization of culture by digital technology." The Fashion Institute of Technology's Art Market Master's program presents, "Locus," a group show featuring Linda Ganjian, Chambliss Giobbi, Caitlin Hurd, Ran Hwang, Sandy Litchfield, NATSU, Noah Post, Donna Ruff, and Arlene Rush.
I happen to be part of said Master's program, so please come down, check out some art, get a drink and support. Full details below.
Locus is a group show that explores ways in which we personally, socially, and physically situate ourselves. When thinking about 'place,' we search for understanding and meaning in terms of both personal and cultural identity. As we explore and react to our surroundings we simultaneously plan and prepare for the next space that we will inhabit in the physical, mental, and emotional realms. While we may reach no definite conclusions, our struggle to grapple with our place, purpose, and identity is ever present.
This exhibition includes works by Linda Ganjian, Chambliss Giobbi, Caitlin Hurd, Ran Hwang, Sandy Litchfield, NATSU, Noah Post, Donna Ruff, and Arlene Rush. Through painting, sculpture, photography, and video art, these artists question place, identity, and purpose by observing and reflecting on the impact of their environment.
Locus is a collaborative curatorial project by the candidates for the Master of Arts degree in Art Market: Principles and Practices at the Fashion Institute of Technology. The program thanks our exhibition sponsor, Two Trees Management Co. LLC for its support.

In the summer of 2007 photographer Ryan McGinley traversed the United States with sixteen models and three assistants, shooting 4,000 rolls of film. From the resulting 150,000 photographs, he arduously narrowed down the body of work to some fifty images, the best of which are on display this months at Team Gallery. McGinley had chosen a very specific itinerary that would bring his troop through the incredible range of landscapes that are available across the US and carefully planned a battery of activities, sometimes orchestrating the use of special effects. The very artificial constructedness of the project allows for situations in which the models can both perform and be caught off guard.

Also on the program is the U.S. premiere of Icelandic composer Snorri Sigfus Birgisson’s Piano Concerto No. 2 (2005-06) with Juilliard pianist Víkingur Ólafsson; the New York premiere of Italian composer Franco Donatoni’s Cloches (1988-89); the first public performance of German/American composer Ursula Mamlok’s Concertino (1984-89); and British composer Oliver Knussen’s Requiem – Songs for Sue (2006) with soprano Katherine Whyte." Looks like one of our favorite final night parties is getting taken over by Lime Wire tonight. I guess the invasion isn't too bad since they bring with them Cassettes Wont Listen and A Brief Smile. Oh, and an open bar from 9pm to 10pm.
This here panty raid party has been building some serious steam as of late and tonight they pick things up with Baltimore's own Dave Nada popping in for a special set. Nada's been part of the new wave of B-more Club music, along with contemporaries such as DJ Sega, that have been breathing new life into a genre that quickly became pigeon-holed. His signature eclectic and always uplifting blend of classic and new school hip-hop, baltimore club, electro, house, rock and funk has made him a standout in the increasingly segmented club scene. It's been a while since Nada has been in town and it's good to have him back. 21+

Hometown Heroes kicked off the fist event in this series in February, and according to them it was so much fun they had to kick people out at 4am. Working across barriers of art, design, architecture, and community service, the CTM’s collaborations have also involved aquatic biologists, members of the Black Panthers, radical ecologists, and the American Red Cross to name a few. Their activities have sought to cultivate mirth and mischief in all four hemispheres, frequently infiltrating multiple spheres of influence -- social, cultural, and political -- with notions of responsible citizenship through creative action.

Date: Tuesday, April 8th Time: 10:00pm Location: Rockwood Music Hall (196 Allen St) Cost: Free
Rockwood is sort of one of those under-appreciated venues here on FreeNYC... Its, tiny, free, and packed with great up and coming talent every night. It's also a great place to hear some really eclectic or unfamiliar sounds. Take tonight's show for example as Nashville rising stars Those Darlins swing into town for some fiery country music. "If history has taught us anything, it’s that punk rock and old-time country music have more in common than anyone would have ever suspected. Those Darlins illustrate this truism. [They] banded together over their love of The Carter Family’s deadpan, crazed music and bring an energy to live performance that recalls the antics of punk heroes such as The Cramps..."
More of Those Darlins for you tonight as the country trio play Sound Fix's Bourbon & Ginger Party tonight. They are joined by BK's own Jones Street Boys and the queens the of the folk circuit Aoife O'Donovan (Crooked Still) & Kristin Andreassen (Uncle Earl).

BTW, Writing on the Wall is a surreal re-working of Plato's Myth of the Cave."

Blake's shocking, yet hauntingly beautiful, sculptures were inspired by his experiences in post-war Vietnam where he witnessed the tragedy of landmines. The exhibition's broken bodies speak of the tragic effect of military waste on society. Everyday, at 4 pm during the Fragments show in Chelsea, the sculptor Blake will speak of the social responsibility of the artist and the remnants of war that are his inspiration. Date: Friday, April 18th Time: 10:00pm Location: Sidewalk Cafe (94 Ave A & 6th st) Cost: Free
The Sidewalk Café is always a good look if you're into anti-folk, neo-american songbook, or singer-songwriter stylings in general. For years, performers like Beck, The Moldy Peaches, and others have been breaking in there. It's always free with a 2 drink minimum but - lets be honest - it's friday and you're thirsty. Tonight is no exception as "Modern Folk/Blues post Beatles songwriter" Frank Hoier takes the stage early (10pm sharp) with his update of American folk music. Its a little bit revolutionary, a little bit front porch at sunset, and 100% heartfelt. He's followed by Feral Foster - an "American Songster with a sound similar to a downbound train gargling whiskey and gravel, with a fury that rivals most 5 piece bands" - and Peter Nevis and his "Avant Garde 1920's Bouzouki pop performed in dignified attire." Peep the links for sounds. 21+

So I am totally back on the jazz kick tonight. Fell into a couple great live shows this week and I am hooked again. Jazz is one of the greatest reasons to live in NYC. Unfortunately, its also quite a pricey ticket sometimes. Thankfully, the good folks of the Rhythm Road series are back in town again. The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad program presents selected professional jazz and urban music performers on concert tours to countries where there is limited exposure to live American culture. Prior to their departure to Egypt, Kosovo and many other destinations, these bands will perform in Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. This afternoon catch sets by Devin Phillips & New Orleans Straight Ahead at 1 and The Dana Leong Band (featuring FreeNYC faves Jason Lindner on keys and Baba Israel on vocals) at 3. First come first served and there is probably a $5 or $10 drink minimum.

"Giant Robot is proud to present new work by Buff Monster at the GRNY Gallery. The artist is best known for his wheat-pasted street art featuring lumps of ice cream, clouds, and squirting breasts. The disarmingly sweet imagery has spilled over into the worlds of fashion, collectibles, and galleries--as well as collaborations for the likes of The Standard, Hurley, Vans, Helio, and Nike. Born of the Abyss represents a break from Buff Monster's public (and usually illegal) work, and reflects new themes, mediums, and directions. The show will include framed and unframed paintings on paper and wood panels. Inspired and influenced by typography, Christian demonology, heavy metal music, and Japanese monster toys, recurring elements will include geometric patterns and katakana, as well as a new character that he calls Demon Seed. These pieces will be complemented with a limited edition of hand-painted kaiju figures." Show runs through May 14th.
Date: Sunday, April 20th Time: 12:00pm Location: Rumsey Playfield, Central Park (enter 72nd and 5th) Cost: Free
I'm feeling a little shafted by the Green Apple Festival this year. The annual good-for-the-planet jam band decention upon NYC in honor of earth day is once again here and - once again - they'll be brining a serious live stage to Central Park for a glorious afternoon concert. You'll get to hear Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder (who are awesome) and then Big Head Todd and the Monsters, The Bacon Brothers, Vusi Mahlasela, Vienna Teng. Now, I LOVE Ricky Skaggs... and I think I have a cassette of Big Head Todd somewhere. But come on guys... Green Apple fest was founded here. so why do we get a 2nd rate show compared to the folks in DJ who get to see Gov't Mule, Umphrey's McGee and acoustic O.A.R. set, a DJ set from Thievery Corporation, regga legends, Toots & The Maytals, and Warren Haynes Solo Acoustic. That lineup is better then the whole All Points West festival. I'm jaded but its still gonna be a fun show. That's what you get for being my last post of the weekend. All Ages.

How about two films for your Tuesday night? The first is "About Water" (Über Wasser) a documentary directed by Udo Maurer. "A film about places where water is interwoven with the fate of people. The film portrays this most important topic of our time, allowing a different view on the eternal coexistence of water and human beings. As effective as An Inconvenient Truth was, it only described a situation...About Water is also clear on its intentions: simply to show what life is already like in places that have either too much, or too little, water." The second film is Prypiat another documentary this one directed by Nikolaus Geyrhalter. "Named after the city where many of the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear plant lived. In the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident, more than 100,000 people were evacuated from the immediate area and resettled, while a two-mile heavily restricted zone was set up around the power plant. Yet, ten years later, people have begun to return. Mr. Gayrhalter seeks out some of these returnees, explores their reasons for coming back and their attitudes towards living with a constant, potentially lethal health threat."

Crooked Disco is back again this month with a full roster of blazin' talent, free booze, and clothing giveaways. Tonights I am crazy excited to bring Alexander Technique to the decks. Founding member of DJs Are Not Rockstars, along with Princess Superstar, Alexander has helped define NYC Electro. Alexander's unique sound combines the pulsating bass and distorted sound of electro with tribal, pounding rhythms of classic New York House and Booty influences from Chicago. The energy that comes out is wild, and not to be missed.
Next up we've got DLake and Symbol are Claire Huxtable bringing that new club sh!t direct from Baltimore. One part MC and one part DJ, Claire Huxtable are a non-stop tornado of club bangers. Classic house, electro, baltimore, booty... if it gets you movin' then their on it. Expect big things from these two in 2008.
And taking on live duties are Attorney St's own Old Money, the MC duo that's been burnin' up the blogosphere as of late. No standard issue hip hop here, as Cambridge and Scheme drop some next level rhythms over funked up electro beats. Check out their recent love over at Discobelle for more gritty details and an exclusive remix from Crooked Disco's own DJ Morsy.
Residents DJ Morsy and DJ Kester hold down the bookends of the night with classic house, new disco and who knows what early and some dirty dancefloor anthems (imma try and drop some new baseline jammers and old school acid breaks if people don't freak out... Morsy'll probably save my a$$ with rock tinged electro and wobbly, dubsided daggers) until they turn on the house lights.
And don't forget, we're giving out fresh threads all night from our good friends Yuhzimi over in Switzerland, and we've got free vodka from 10-11 to get your party started right! $5 on the RSVP list and more at the door, so make sure you RSVP now!
