I know at this point we have really pounded the idea of First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum into your heads, but here is a refresher course. If you cross over the East River, living in the shadows of the Manhattan museums, and with way less foot traffic from city tourists, you will find the Brooklyn Museum. Every first Saturday of the month admission is free (thanks to big name corporate sponsorship) beginning at 5pm and there are a slew of events for the whole fam. Thin month they honor Women's History Month...Carnival Style. Including Lucía Pulido putting her own spin on traditional Colombian rhythms, Ballet Folklorico Perú performs traditional Peruvian dance and music, plus a screening of Favela Rising. Opening on the first day of Women's History Month is 31 Under 31: Young Women in Art Photography. The exhibition features the work of 31 innovative young women in emerging art photography under the age of 31 all acquired through open submissions. The press release explains ""While it is impossible to capture the full breadth of international talent by female photographers in one exhibition," say Tan and Feinstein, "we feel that the diversity of subjects and intent are a clear representation of the wide range of skill and creativity that is flourishing today. By allowing the works to be culled from an open call, we hope to give exposure to unknown photographers while simultaneously showcasing more familiar names in contemporary photography." Tonight is the opening reception (and after party with DJ 24Court), but the show runs through March 28th. Full list of photographers after the jump.

The concept underlying this show is that an artist can use any piece of equipment to create engaging photographs. Cameras generally range from the well-known Diana, Holga and Lubitel to obscure junkstore finds and homemade pinhole jobs." "Hilarious yet scary, hardcore yet charming, the Hamburger Eyes crew put out the illest lil’ photography magazine the world has ever seen. Since the first issue of 30 xeroxed pamphlets was printed in 2002, Hamburger Eyes has become an elegant yet underground periodical combining the documentary approach of National Geographic with the hit-‘em-hard sensibility of a late-night tagger. A pictorial history of both the intimate and iconic moments of everyday life, Hamburger Eyes is a travel journal, a personal diary, and a family album [...] In conjunction with the Spring 2008 release of their first book, Hamburger Eyes: Inside Burgerworld, The powerHouse Arena will put you through the grinder with a selection of photographs by magazine masterminds Ray Potes, David Potes, Stefan Simikich, and Jason Roberts Dobrin, as well as regular contributors Ted Pushinsky, Ryan Furtado, Patrick Griffin, Vic Blue, David Uzzardi, Brian David Stevens, Mark Murrmann, Jai Tanju, Michael Jang, Matt Weber, Uri Korn, and Bill Daniel." Date: Thursday, March 6th Time: 7:00pm Location: Angels & Kings (500 East 11th St.) Cost: Free but 2 Drink Minimum
As most of you know from reading FreeNYC, every once and a while I like to nerd out on some science and all around geeky stuff. Lately I am finding more people of a similar dorky mindset. And apparently so do the people over at Angels and Kings as they host Nerd Nite described pretty accurately as "like the Discovery Channel with beer." Tonight is a 2 parter, Presentation #1, Tales From The Senate Subcommittee: The Gruesome Death of Horror Comic Books of the 1950s and Presentation #2, BEAM Robots: Insects of the Robot Kingdom. Details on each after the jump.
Presentation #1:
Tales From The Senate Subcommittee: The Gruesome Death of Horror Comic Books of the 1950s
by George Pasles
Description: Four color presses spat out grisly morality plays (think O. Henry by way of Edgar Allen Poe) at the dawn of the Cold War. Murderers were dispatched by their zombie victims. Mad scientists were done in by their foul creations. Freak show acts killed their cruel carnies. One company created the genre, and its runaway success inspired other publishers to dispense with their insipid superhero fare and follow suit. These imitators, however, trafficked in overt gore rather than irony. And soon the ten-cent comic books themselves proved to be too tempting a target for revenge...
The cast: A Senator looking to raise his national profile for a White House bid! A sex-obsessed psychiatrist blaming comics for juvenile delinquency! A comic book publisher on speed! Blood! Sex! Violence! Communism! A showdown in the Senate! Censorship! Death! And, of course, the inevitable return from the grave.
Bio: George Andrew Pasles is a fraud, a mountebank, a charlatan. He has pursued no advanced degrees, named no social ills, nor addressed some mere disease. He speaks extemporaneously on a wide variety of topics, often in the presence of others. As a personal first, he intends for this talk to be factually accurate.
Presentation #2:
BEAM Robots: Insects of the Robot Kingdom
By Rob Lockhart
Description: BEAM is a relatively new movement in robotics which produces robots with incredible complexity using very simple analog circuits. This field, which was pioneered by Mark Tilden (who also invented the Robosapien toy), mimics the structure of organic nervous systems, but can be made easily by anyone with $10 and a soldering iron.
Bio: Rob Lockhart is a person with nearly $11 and a soldering iron. He teaches robotics for kids and adults at Robot Village on the upper west side.

Its best to spend those wee hours of daylight savings in an alcoholic daze so as not to care whether is 2pm or 4 pm and what happened to 3pm. SoHo's Obivia helps with the buzz via a double open bar of gin tonight. I think one of those hours gets lost somewhere in the shuffle but, y'know, there's plenty of others. DJ Bammbamm spins top 40. 21+

Date: Mondays Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm Location: Blue Owl (196 2nd Ave btw. 12th and 13th) Cost: Free Open Bar: Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka, 6-8
Notice the new naming structure on all these events where Monday + Blue + Free Booze = Good Times. Speakeasy style east-side lounge Blue Owl does not have turntables and heavy bass. Instead, they opt for a laid back cocktail vibe. Tonight they ease you into the work week with two hour of complimentary Zubrowka Bison Grass vodka which I'm told (by MyOpenBar) tastes like vanilla and gets Bison mad horny. 21+

I'm surprised that King Britt has appeared so many times on our side (4 actually) over the years but never as a headlining performer. Its always an industry party of him opening for Zap Mama or presenting a show at Summerstage. Well, tonight its all Britt as Giant Step takes over the Hudson Bar bringing the talented Philly DJ to your afterwork ears. "Spinning his way to soulful rhythms and melodious perfection, King has changed the face of dance music culture mixing house, hip-hop, indie, nu-jazz, funk and afro-tech."

Atlanta's dirty psych-blues-rockers, The Black Lips, swing by NYC's best music store this evening for a free, intimate, instore before their Bowery show tonight. While usually live shows are know for their high-energy ruckus, it will be interesting to see what the boys do in such cramped corners. Highly Recommended.

So this one is not the next big thing and its not the coolest indie-lectro DJ in the land but it is one really good time. I randomly wandered into Gonzalez y Gonzalez a few weeks back with a collegue to grab the seminal after work drink (and nachos) only to find this killer funk cover band, lliquid, playing in their massive back room. The vibe was great, the music spot on and the people were all getting down like mad. It's kind of like going to a fun-a$$ wedding every week. So if you need a pit stop on your way home and you work in that SoHo-NoHo area (and you can dance the salsa) then pop in. It's also a great place to pick up tourists as its loaded with them asking "what should we do tonight?"

Deitch Projects and Ghost Robot present Bjork's newest video, Wanderlust, tonight in 3D! This exclusive premiere will also include a behind-the-scenes look at how this complex 3D music video was achieved by wonderstudio Encyclopedia Pictura. The video elaborates the fourth single off Bjork's latest album Volta into a mythical stereoscopic trip through an emersive mountain landscape. As a nomadic primitive, Bjork is mysteriously possessed to shepherd a herd of giant yaks down a treacherous river - drawn forward by a transcendental force which is both real and imagined. Along the way, Bjork faces an absurd physical struggle with a second self which has sprouted from her backpack. Large scale mechanical puppets, detailed costumes, original concept paintings and sculptures, and behind the scenes 3d photography will be displayed along with the video.

"Wild West-style oil capitalism in Russia provides the backdrop for The Great Repression, a selection of recent video art by young, emerging Russian artists, curated by Andrey Parshikov. The overt political oppression of the Soviet era has given way to new forms of hidden oppression, quite literally fueled by oil and driven by media and advertising. Every Russian TV screen now projects a numbing and brutal new reality into people's homes, subjecting them to forces whose effects are felt even when their source remains unseen. The pieces in this selection hold a lens, sweet and ironic, to these pervasive forces, showing how in the absence of anything identifiable to oppose, the tendency is simply to succumb. It is, in fact, the insidious invisibility of the forces behind everything from manipulative advertising to market-driven political corruption that results in this so-called Great Repression."

"St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints.
Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 461.
Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland, probably Kilpatrick. His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Romans living in Britian in charge of the colonies. As a boy of fourteen or so, he was captured during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. Ireland at this time was a land of Druids and pagans. He learned the language and practices of the people who held him.
During his captivity, he turned to God in prayer. He wrote "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same." "I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain."
Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britian, where he reunited with his family. He had another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling out to him "We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once more." He began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years.
Later, Patrick was ordained a bishop, and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. He arrived in Ireland March 25, 433, at Slane. One legend says that he met a chieftain of one of the tribes, who tried to kill Patrick. Patrick converted Dichu (the chieftain) after he was unable to move his arm until he became friendly to Patrick. Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland, converting many. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country. Kings, their families, and entire kingdoms converted to Christianity when hearing Patrick's message. Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461.
Why a shamrock?
Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and has been associated with him and the Irish since that time." [source: Catholic.org]
Tonight the Brooklyn Independent Cinema Series gives you a short and a feature for your Monday night. In "The Climactic Death of Dark Ninja" a frazzled auteur struggles to shoot the climactic scene of his self-proclaimed martial arts masterpiece. And in the full length feature, Audience of One, a Pentecostal pastor from San Francisco was praying on a mountain top when he received a vision from God to spread the Gospel through filmmaking. Using donations from his congregation, he slowly transformed his church into a fully functioning movie studio, and the production company Christian WYSIWYG Filmworks was born. The film is a documentary that chronicles the making of Gravity: The Shadow of Joseph. This verite style film goes inside a Pentecostal church, where the charismatic Pastor Richard Gazowsky leads his loyal cast and crew on an incredible journey that tests the limits of faith.

I'm glad to see that Philly's Pink Skull is finally getting his due. Boy's been traveling that hallowed ground between hipster bar jams and electro bangers for a minute. Its a thin line but when you get it write it can be so sweet. Tyler's work explores the psychology of family and relationships as he transverses a landscape of pure Americana. Many of the images capture his father, siblings or friends in vulnerable moments that seem to simultaneously infer a deep adoration and an emotional division from his past; as if he is the insider who has stepped out of bounds and is now
looking back inwards with an honest eye. Performances by Ed Schrader from Wham City in Baltimore and $2 PBR bar both begin at 7:30pm. There is a suggested donation at the door to benefit Art Space MCV/NYC as we prepare for our relocation."

Walking through the Armory the other day, my brother summed it all up.. "It's awesome that buildings like this still exist in New York." And I can't think of a better way to celebrate those by-gone day's of architecture and close our this extention of the this years lackluster (IMHO) Biennial then with a tripped out slip over courtesy of one Mr. DJ Olive. Its "an all-night sleepover event inside the creepy/cool Armory Building, part of the ongoing off-site events attached to the Whitney Biennial. Doze off under portraits of old dead people--the vibe is pure Haunted Mansion, all oak and creaking stairways. DJ Olive is presenting his 'Sleeping Pill' series, billed as 'radical anxiety termination.' Kind of like Xanax, dig?" Very limited space.

"The party that's been cutting its teeth for the past six months at APT is taking it underground--at least in spirit. In actuality, the party's going way overground, on the top floor of the triangular building that sits just below 14th St in between 9th Ave and Hudson. The space is great, an architect's well designed loft with large old windows lookingover into the Hudson and up to Times Square. The music will also be great, with special guest DJ Spun from Rong Music playing excellently weird disco and classic house interspersed with god knows what else from Justin Carter and Probus. "

Famed author of the recently translated El Fuego y la Palabra (The Fire and the Word), Gloria is probably the closest person to the Zapatistas in Chiapas to have ever come to NYC. More below.
Video screening and presentation with the author, Gloria Munoz Ramirez
The film and book "El Fuego y la Palabra" (Fire and Word) is an oral history that recounts from the beginning of the movement of the Zapatista indigenous communities in the state of Chiapas. Their demands are liberty, justice, democracy, land, health, education, and labor rights. The story is told in the simple words of some of the original organizers of the movement. It is an inspiring testimony of hope and resistance. The author, Gloria Munoz, will be coming in to speak about the film and book to provide us with more insight to the compilation of this oral history and the struggles that the indigenous communities in the state of Chiapas have been organizing against.
Gloria Muños Ramirez lived with the Zapatistas for 7 years and wrote a book to share their story that is now available for the first time in English. She will speak about the Zapatista resistance and history. She has worked for the Mexican newspaper Punto, for the German news agency DPA, for the U.S. newspaper La Opinion and for the Mexican daily La Jornada.

"Olu Dara is a multi-talented entertainer who has been performing since he was 8 years old. During the 1970s and '80s, he gained a reputation as a trumpet/cornet player who could handle all aspects of jazz. On the one hand he could perform with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1973-74), but he could also handle the demands of the free-flowing avant-garde style which formed the basis of the New York Loft scene of that period. Think of him as a modern equivalent of the itinerant traveling musician/historian of years past. As he puts it, 'I sing about women, food, and life in general.'"
