The TSG uses spontaneous hip-hop beats, fluid harmony, and melodies that make people fall in love faster, all combined at one, to provide an intimate musical and dancing experience that eclipses what most DJ's can accomplish from behind a booth. With that said, The TSG has no problem walking into a club almost exclusively inhabited by DJ's and playing smart, exciting, musically deep dance music for hours on end." Presentation #1:
Zombies Are Real: Actual Zombies of the Natural World And Why You Might Be One
By Jeremy Kay
Description: You might think of zombies as trite B-movie material, but scientists are discovering more and more real zombies in nature. These natural zombies have had their brains taken over by parasites, who use their zombified hosts to further their own ends – like reproducing or finding their way into the brain of a new host. Tonight I'll give some examples of the crazy and self-destructive things that animals do when
they've been turned into zombies. I'll explore the neurobiology of how a parasite can control the behavior of its host. And I'll reassure everyone that we humans don't have anything to fear from zombies... or do we?
Bio: Jeremy is a postdoctoral fellow in neurobiology at Harvard. His professional work concerns vision, but he thinks parasite mind-control is far more interesting. His interest in zombies is purely academic. Really. Like, your brain will totally not get eaten if you show up. We promise.
Presentation #2:
Pythagoras and Beethoven Sitting in a tree! The Magical Mathematics of Music.
by Jaime Peters
Description: Galileo said the entire universe is "written in the language of mathematics." Well, part of that entire universe is music. You may say, but music and math have no real connection. But I say au contraire. Come hear about how the entirety of a song (whether it sounds good or sounds bad) can be broken down to a single ratio that governs harmonious sound.
Bio: By day, Jaime Peters spends her time toiling to get more women involved in the political process and creating a truly representative democracy. By night, she plays the saxophone with a local Brooklyn jazz ensemble and walks her dog Scarlett through the maze of Park Slope.
Presentation #3:
Different Sizes of Infinity
by Chris DiScenza
Description: Infinity has many strange properties, with the main result being _______. Well, if we told you now we’d ruin it, but you’ll be shocked. This presentation will also show that there is a true statement about infinity that can not be proved or disproved. Surprisingly, there is not any technical math required to show all of this.
Bio: Chris works at The Physics Factory which is comprised of a team of scientists and educators who share a common goal: to share their enthusiasm for physics with students, teachers and the community. Through a combination of hands-on learning and eye-popping stage shows, The Physics Factory aims to show that physics is an exciting process of discovery and invention, and a rewarding career. Chris has infinite
enthusiasm for physics. Get it?

These themes are frequent topics in Dosa's work but the new works presented at Invisible NYC go beyond the recurring characters seen in his older work. These pieces are also unique in their sheer size, redefining the space and ! covering the gallery walls.

Matthew Barney's Cremaster series is one of the most significant artistic achievements of our generation (IMHO). Although twisted, complex, and a mysteriously riding that mid-point between a film and an visual art piece (aka loose plot), the work is both daunting and stunning. Post its Guggenheim retrospective a few years back, theatre screenings are few and far between these days so this evening is a great chance to catch Cremaster 2 for free. Oh, and don't worry if you missed #1, the films were never intended to be watched in order. Except below. Repeats 2/14. 18+

"The best kept secret in town…that's what friends call her. When Baltimore native Sonya Vallet improvises in any style people wonder who she gets if from. The cross-cultured quadrilingual eldest of a musical family, she debuted at 17 in her father's quartet opening for jazz master Oscar Peterson as the only woman at the 1st Jazz Festival of Madrid. She worked and studied with the likes of gospel legend Donna Hightower, Brazilian genius Fernando Girão, Japanese diva Monday Michiru, world beat virtuoso Danny Heines, and jazz bass masters Ron Carter and Jimmy Haslip. Sonya has mused with her original poems and compositions to sculpt a unique repertoire for Los Prófugos Galácticos, her new collaboration with pianist Erik Deutsch. "Jeff Bailey Gallery and Andrea Meislin Gallery are pleased to announce a group exhibition featuring 70 artists who use gouache in their work. Well-known artists such as Kay Rosen, Thomas Nozkowski, James Siena, Dike Blair, Judith Linhares, Bruce Pearson, Amy Sillman, Fred Tomaselli, Barbara Takenaga, and Steve diBenedetto will be joined by mid-career and younger emerging artists who’ve found something fresh to say in the medium." More Below. Continues through March 15th
Gouache, an opaque watercolor, dries fast and yields a bright matte finish. A veteran medium--it has been around for millennia--gouache can be bold, subtle, dense, or airy, depending on the shaping hand. For many it has become the medium of choice for works on paper.
Well-known artists such as Kay Rosen, Thomas Nozkowski, James Siena, Dike Blair, Judith Linhares, Bruce Pearson, Amy Sillman, Fred Tomaselli, Barbara Takenaga, and Steve diBenedetto will be joined by mid-career and younger emerging artists who've found something fresh to say in the medium.
The show will prove that gouache is a medium through which the creative juices of several generations of artists can flow with terrific, unpredictable results.
"As anxiety mounts with endless media forecasts of recession, there is little relief from impending loss. Not knowing where to turn or how to cope with the change of tide, the public is caught between the government's encouragement to spend and the media's suggestions to save--a paralyzing bipolar situation. With Bare Market, Thierry Goldberg Projects takes on the menacing bear market through a selection of work which challenges notions of the global economy, money, and status."
Crickets star in Lisa DiLillo's two-channel video installation Realtime / Currency Exchange. She pits nature against capital in strikingly absurd juxtaposition. In the left channel, a cricket is trapped within a clock surrounded by dewy silk flowers placed in memoriam. Fighting the hands of time, the cricket scurries across an ideal sunset (the face of the clock) - a destination he will never reach. In the right channel, perhaps referring to the declining value of the dollar, two crickets dig into two one hundred dollar bills. DiLillo's fierce literalism depicts consumerism and deflation simultaneously in visual pun.
Swetlana Heger's text installation NIKKEI is anonymous as it is ambiguous. Cast in stainless steel the letters may have been pried off the Japanese stock market's wall and hung in the gallery. Typical of her performance art collaborations with global luxury brands, NIKKEI stands without comment at the intersection of commerce and art. Just like the stocks in the market it represents, NIKKEI can be bought and sold as work of art with an ever fluctuating value.
Using a pinhole camera, Barbara Ess depicts imagery, however carefully composed, with the seeming lightness of a dream. In No Title (Stocks), Ess captures a crumpled page from the daily newspaper, where a human skull seems to be hovering above the stock market report. Delicate and evocative, the blurred exposure is ghostlike. The pinhole camera effect provides a dramatic depth of mood, picturing a solitary psychological focus. The market watch page is both stock report and obituary unto itself.
In Julika Rudelius' two-channel video Economic Primacy, an all male cast of Dutch CEOs share their thoughts about power, money, and success. Interviewed using a hidden earpiece, they respond to Rudelius' questions over the phone while she is situated in another room. Set in a generic office space of Rudelius' own construction, the intensity of focus and sense of observation are penetrating. The blankness of the office tells of a certain lofty separation, perhaps out of touch, from the rest of society. With this framing in double-screen, she heightens the candid nature of the conversations. Views on the role and importance of money as the ultimate measure of love, image, and success follow with snide quips on class and race.
Date: Friday, February 15th Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location: Monster Island Building 210 Kent Ave. at Metropolitan, W'burg) Cost: Free
The second biannual Williamsburg Fashion Weekend kicks off tonght as the entire Monster Island Building (okay, well, a good portion of it) is converted into a fashion party wih live music, live styling, and works from Mandate of Heaven, Sovereign Beck,
King Gurvy. The fun continues tomorrow with more style from SDN & French Me. More about the designers below.
About the Designers:
Composed almost entirely of recycled vintage, every last piece in newcomer Carissa Ackerman's line Mandate of Heaven is one-of-a kind—think Grace Kelly meets Roller-girl with hints of Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney. But don't mistake the Mandate girl for fluff of any sort. 'By mixing and manipulating the best elements of our past and present", says Ackerman. "I want to create the well-lived life of our future.' " -Blackbook Magazine
Sovereign Beck envisions a world where fashion-forward creatives as well as Ivy-league salary men can wear their business day attire straight into the cocktail hour. With this in mind, Sovereign Beck neckties are handcrafted with equal parts classic tailoring and avant-garde illustrations that hearken back to their halcyon design school days. Like good architecture, Sovereign Beck ties seamlessly combine form and function.
Artur Arbit's men's line, King Gurvy is not even a year old. King Gurvy is outrageous color combos, killer fabrics, unusual details and hand made by the designer. The fabrics are primarily vintage and of limited supply, therefore, each piece is a one-of-a-kind. The theme of the show is Colonization of the World, and will be scored by the band called the Trilateral Commission.
French Me is a new contemporary women's clothing label out of Brooklyn, NY designed by Liz Berg and Jeannette Tiso. The label's inspiration is taken from 1920's – 1960's clothing silhouette, detail, and fabrication. Vintage lingerie and French boudoirs inspire the new Spring 2008 collection, debuting at Williamsburg Fashion Weekend. The line will be accessorized with jewelry by Meagan Camp and handbags by Thou Art Uncouth.
SDN will show pieces from their Spring and Fall '08 lines made from recycled and sustainable fabrics with live music from SPEEDBUMP. Marcus Hicks and Kyle Goen created SDN out of a love of fashion, a mutual commitment to progressive social and political causes and an excuse to make cool things for themselves and friends.

"Be Kind Rewind, an exhibition of new work by Michel Gondry, opens tonight at Deitch Projects, shortly before his identically titled film is released in theaters. Be Kind Rewind is a film about two childhood friends living in Passaic, New Jersey, trying to make ends meet. After one of the characters accidentally gets his brain magnetized by trying to sabotage a local power plant, he visits the video store his friend is taking care of while the owner is away and unknowingly erases all of the video tapes in the store’s inventory. The characters decide to make their own homemade versions of popular films in a junkyard behind the store. Antifolk began as an East Village movement in 1983 when Lach was rejected by the Greenwich Village folk scene for being "too punk". His punk/folk approach attracted other local musicians to his illegal after-hours club, The Fort. The cops forced The Fort to go legit, and as a result it became a traveling club with Lach as its roving impresario. For the last 15 years The Fort has been stationed in the back room at Sidewalk Cafe. Since its inception the scene has nurtured hundreds of artists, including Beck, Regina Spektor, Hamell on Trial, Nellie McKay and The Moldy Peaches. Today it is a thriving showcase and center of a vital community for hundreds of artists who regularly perform, collaborate, and hang out there.

Maybe it's afro-gaze, maybe neo-soul but with influences as far and wide as Cutris Mayfield and The Jesus and Mary Chain you would expect suspect something sporadic but the result is a succinct, soulful wall of noise. Tonight they take the early slot at the weekly Rock and a Hard Place party along with 4 other bands (below). 21+

The good folks over at Rhythmism.com celebrate 4 years of going strong in the world of DJ infused nightlife this week (congrats!). To celebrate, they are throwing one serious club banger tonight at Pacha with something for everyone. For the commercial club kids is James Zabiela who first made his mark on NYC opening for Digweeds tour a few years back. Now he's holding down sold our crowds in super clubs aorund the world. For the blogging house hipsters, young-superstars The Marinez Brothers invade the upstairs Pachita with energetic, high powered house music. And for the heads out there, and my personal pick on the bill, Toronto's Daudmau5 will be tearing the main room apart with wobbly electro bangers. Deadmau5 player and supplied bios below. 21+
One of the most technically talented DJs on the planet- JAMES ZABIELA returns for his Pacha residency, in conjunction with NYC‚s foremost online dance music community Rhythmism.com. James is looking forward to the special date and exclaims, „I'm super excited to be coming back to my Pacha residency in New York after a short break. Bring it on!". James Zabiela heralded his way into 2008 with his new EP, showing just how he has excelled as a producer. The ŒPerseverance‚ EP sees James explore new ground with heady soundscapes and heartfelt melodies. All the tracks feature his own vocals and include his signature sci-fi techy madness, Zabiela-esque glitches, to a nod to to one of his long-time loves, Depeche Mode on 'No Other way but Down'.
Joining Zabiela is Toronto‚s newest rising star Deadmau5 (pronounce dead mouse‚), who has been recognized as a rising, notable producer by dance titans such as Tiesto and Armin van Buuren and as varied as François K. and Zabiela. With a slew of new productions, remixes gracing more than 15 compilations in the last year and a new record label Mau5trap Recordings, Deadmau5 is poised to release his debut studio album in 2008 to much worldwide anticipation.
The Martinez Brothers have been causing a quite a hubbub and justly so. Having emerged on the scene under the tutelage of mentor Dennis Ferrer, these two teenage brothers have already achieved a quite a bit of dance music notoriety with gigs at Shelter, 718 Sessions, P.S. 1, and Pacha. Their first single, „My Rendition‰ was a bonafide club hit last summer and their energetic sets are not only a product of their youth but of their charismatic, high-powered DJ sets.
Basic NYC‚s Sleepy & Boo, named "Night Visionaries" by Time Out New York, have been champions of the NYC dance music scene with regular parties and DJ sets at Sullivan Room and Pacha New York. They have playing host to the finest caliber of artists including Derrick May, Derrick Carter, Doc Martin, Kaskade, and Mark Farina over the last three years. Together they also host a series of NYC locals nights for the abundant, burgeoning talent in this city and their parties reflect the „basic‰ philosophy ˆ music-forward, vibe-oriented events that are dedicated to exposing new and out-of-town talent

AC’s doing a few shows before heading back to the studio for months so catch him tonight before its too late.
Taking the live duties tonight is Boston’s own Benefit Friends. Like his contemporaries Girl Talk and Dan Deacon, Benefit Friends creates live Italo-electro using nobs, pedals, and various electronic gizmos (that’s right kids, no Seratos and no Laptop) in a high energy freak-out frenzy. Late night duties go to our favorite Modular Records/La Decadanse stalwart, Jess Jubilee who’ll be bringing out her high energy classics for ya. Resident DJ Hilt rounds out the night with glitchy fidgit house (early) and breakbeats on the late night. As always, heavy bass sound, reinforced lighting and strobes, and an open bar from 10-11. RSVP now and get on the $5 list… not to be missed!

Join artist, musician and teacher; Tara McPherson, for her first solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Lost Constellations, featuring a new series of oil paintings and resin-cast sculptures, incorporated into a site-specific installation. Show runs until March 22nd. See full press release below.
NEW YORK, NY (February 8, 2008) — Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to announce Lost Constellations, a solo exhibition of new works by Tara McPherson. For the artist’s first solo show at the gallery, Lost Constellations features a new series of oil paintings and resin-cast sculptures, incorporated into a site-specific installation. The sculptures are a new experience for the artist, who has never before worked in this medium, three-dimensionally in full-scale proportions.
The painted portraits in Lost Constellations depict adventurous super-heroines from an alternate universe, crossing dimensional planes of time and space. McPherson considers the idea of parallel existence through the use of multiple views or angles on a subject, inspired by the Einstein cross (a phenomenon caused by gravitational lensing) while her series of bodily transfigurations convey principles on the physical manifestation of thought. A reoccurring cast of female characters appear in various states of action—fighting battles and growing toward self-discovery. Using her signature bold and graphic style, Tara’s imagery explores love, loss and loneliness through variations on strength, vulnerability and female empowerment. Concepts of non-verbal communication and the evolution of spoken language are explored as well, along with an interpretation on the circle of life—represented through transitional properties of water particles: gas, liquid and solid.
One of the first women to gain recognition in a genre (and greater Art world) dominated by Male artists, Tara McPherson is a role model for younger female artists in the movement. A multi-faceted artist, she has successful careers in both Fine Art and Illustration. Her process remains the same in commissioned illustrations as in her personal work. Tara only does what she enjoys, never compromising her talent or individual sense of creative expression. Fine Art allows McPherson to develop a deeper, more intimate narrative for her subjects. Through layers of paint and symbolism, ideas that take pages of storyboard to convey in illustration projects can be condensed into a singular panel for one of her original pieces of artwork.

Show runs until March 22nd. Full press release below.
NEW YORK, NY (February 8, 2008) — Jonathan LeVine Gallery is pleased to announce Fade to Gray, a solo exhibition featuring new drawings and oil paintings by the internationally acclaimed artist Lori Earley. This will be the artist’s first solo show at the gallery, marking the fourth solo exhibition of her career, to date. Fade to Gray offers an intimate presentation of Earley’s unique creative process, as it is the first time a collection of her skillfully rendered graphite drawings has ever been exhibited. This series provides a rare opportunity to see original studies on a smaller scale, as the artist does not keep a sketchbook, and only produces one drawing per painting through her practiced studio method.
In Fade to Gray, Lori Earley elaborates upon her signature aesthetic with a new subdued palette, evoking mood and intensity. Blending photorealist painting techniques with Mannerist elements of surreal distortion, Lori’s portraits of hauntingly captivating female figures bring historical context into a contemporary light. The stylized, elongated necks and limbs of her subjects accentuate delicate features, with prominent eyes that hold the viewer in a penetrating stare. Cast in dramatic lighting effects that produce an ethereal glow, their fair skin and hair appear as pale as alabaster, ghost-like and incandescent.
Earley’s shift into a muted color palette for Fade to Gray reflects a new direction for the artist, who typically paints in a vivid chromatic spectrum. These faded hues represent the artist’s emotional and physical energy levels, caused by a demanding creative process. After investing arduous hours into her work, Earley uses an absence of color to express feeling drained. Expanding on this theme for her gallery installation, all pieces will be framed in white and displayed on custom Victorian-inspired wallpaper, produced in a flocked velvet texture for the site-specific installation. The wallpaper was designed especially for this exhibition by Lori Earley in collaboration with artist Adam Wallacavage, as part of his new venture: Curio Wallcoverings.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Lori Earley received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York, where she studied with influential artists like Marshall Arisman and Steven Assael. A recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, she was one of the few students in her graduating class to receive the Rhodes Presidential Award for Outstanding Achievement. She began exhibiting her oil paintings in 2004, catapulting her career with her first solo show shortly thereafter, in 2005. Her artistic influences include the painting techniques of J.W. Waterhouse, John Singer Sargent, William Bougeureau, and Steven Assael as well as the subject matter of artists such as Chris Cunningham, Ray Caesar, and Floria Sigismondi.
There is sooo much art happening this weekend! Here is another one for your calendar. Downtown New York legendary cult figure Jack Walls will be having a show of collages at Fuse Gallery. Longtime companion of the late Robert Mapplethorpe, Walls has taken one single image of Mapplethorpe's -"Ada"- and has transformed this single image into a dizzying array of ninety-two collages." Tonight is the opening, and the show runs through March 22, 2008.

"Secret Project Robot is pleased to present brothers Shelter and Ivory Serra in Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars. A photo installation and art collaboration inspired by youth culture, the urban “playground”, and the long standing endless party of the New York Scene. Both Ivory and Shelter’s art places emphasis on alternative culture, their work offers a raw, compelling and provocative viewpoint of often unnoticed relics of our daily lives. Shelter uses icons like the “game over” sign from Nintendo and Sega or computer text written out by hand while Ivoy photographs crushed cans, cigarette boxes and local celebrities. Their conclusions are often humorous even tragic but always uncannily self aware." From ArtCal, full write up here.

"Soul Summit Music raises a ruckus in the final evening of Brooklyn Next at BAMcafé with deep exploits into the groove featuring special guest Danil Wright. LAROMLAB
Brandon Harrod, aka Laromlab, is an 8-bit maestro whose music increasingly resonates beyond the chiptune scene. Laromlab has been described as "a more coherent Crystal Castles, with less screaming, and the hardest working analog bass in electronic dance music."

First off, I wanted to say I recently realized that Staten Island tends to be the least posted about of all the boroughs on FreeNYC, so here is one to start to making up for it. Tonight check of a screening of My Block in Brownsville, "a stand out documentary from director Christine Dierk, a documentary of a person trying to grow up in the poor neighborhoods of East New York, where drugs and violence are commonplace, is arrested for carrying heroin. This intimate film follows Bren, his mother Tara, and his public defense attorney as they fight their way through the court system in order to save Bren's future."

In New York we think of subway rats and pigeons as New York City’s only wildlife but tonight Julliard's AXIOM Chamber Ensemble, conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky, introduces us to exotic avian life when they transport you to the great outdoors with a performance of Messiaen’s Des canyons aux étoiles inspired by the majesty of Bryce Canyon in Utah. Messiaen was always fascinated by birdsong and during his 1972 trip to Utah, he discovered Bryce Canyon, famous for its unique geology, ancient trees and scenic views from the rim, an experience that shaped this work."
Concert is at 8 PM and FREE tickets are available at the Juilliard Box Office.
Meg Baird's show tonight is just the kick I needed to get that CD album back into rotation in my studio (goodbye Alison Krauss & Robert Plant) for those mellow midweek moments. And while Baird is primarily known for her work as a member of Philadelphia's acclaimed Espers, this solo work is equally brilliant and moving. "Each of Dear Companion's acoustic guitar-plus-voice songs feels as if it comes from another era, primarily the late-'60s heyday of British folk, with some '70 singer-songwriter touches thrown in for good measure. Whereas Baird's contemporaries...come across like a modern band simply appreciating the music of decades ago, Dear Companion genuinely sounds like a lost Fairport Convention recording." (Andrew Earles, The AV Club)

Deeply connected with her native Central Asia, Almagul Menlibayeva's work attempts to test the permeability of contemporary art to some traditional practices, ideas and imagery. Often described as punk-shamanism, Menlibayeva's videos are embedded in theatricality that leads them through a complex set of references – from tribal symbolism to images of the communist industrial past."

There is so much for me to say in reference to this post it's hard to know where to begin. The meat of this event, is that there is a public discussion at Eugene Lang this evening about racial and ethnic stereotypes in mainstream media. Filmmakers will explore the role of documentaries in combating negative images. Panel participants after the jump. I graduated from Eugene Lang, and it is an excellent place to get a college education and I think that this is going to be a very important and eye opening discussion.
That being said however, in the description of the event they referenced "TV shows like Arrested Development" as a source of said stereotypes. A.D. happens to be one of my favorite shows, and of all the examples of harmful stereotypes on TV, I do find it rather strange that this is the one they chose instead of half the shows on VH1 or even The Sopranos for that matter.
