To those of your who receive our daily email blasts, we apologize for the recent bugs (late emails, day late emails etc.) The sort answer is we are working it out but if you want the long answer, please see below. Regardless, please be know that we are aware of the problem and working on a solution. In the interim, I urge you to visit the site everyday which will always have all of the days events, and many in advance.
So after days of back and forth with the good folks at Feedburner (who send out our 3000+ daily emails) they simply boned up to the fact that their servers are overloaded. We slate our emails to go out between 9am and 11am every day. This allows us enough time to wake up in the morning, post any events that did not make it to the site ahead of time (or ones we just found out about), rebuild the site, and have all of that info sent along your way before our morning coffee. Apparently, thousands of other people have the same idea and basically the server is getting overloaded at 9 and is then backlogged all day. The result is that some of you are receiving emails on time and others are getting them as late as the following morning. This is fine if we were not a time sensitive website but we are, and this can not go on.
Beginning Monday of next week, we will be moving the time slot of delivery up to 7am - 9am with the goal of getting ahead of the curve. If that does not work then we will continue to move the feed back by 2hrs until we can resolve the problem. We are also be attempting (no promises) to deliver both the days and the following days events in the email as many of you have requested but this may not be possible with the current infrastructure of the website. All of the days events, and many upcoming events, are posting on the actual site at FreeNYC.net so in the interim I do urge everyone to visit regularly to search out events (plus it makes or helper stat monkey very happy and raises the pittance of ad dollars we make to help keep the site alive).
As some of you are aware, FreeNYC started 2.5 years ago as a side project and simple service of our design company, Defined by Media. Over the years it has grown into a much bigger project then we ever imaged (which is a great thing). It was just something that we felt NYC needed. We wanted to level the playing field and show all of our friends that were frustrated with their insane cost of living that you could really enjoy all this city had to offer without running up crazy credit card debt. The site has always been a labor of love and no one is raking in the money off of it. We are currently working on a plan to redevelop the site to accommodate the changing online and social climate to bring your more information faster without increasing out operational costs (okay, now I sound all business-like, sorry). In the meantime, please support, spread the word, and thanks again for taking the time to read this.

I'm a gin drinker by choice (which anyone knows how has talked to me at about 3:30 in the morning) and Hendrick’s is one of my favorites. Much more earthy and herbal then most of the new gin's out there these days (like No. 209 which is much more citrus infused and awesome for a gin and tonic) Hendrick's has the perfect body and bite for a nice martini. Its too bad that said spirit is lost in todays world of vodka infused candi-tini drinkers. Sidebars aside, tonight they bring back that old school Gramarcy Park vibe with a small event featuring a free Hendrick's cocktail (much to my lush-life dismay, only the first one is free) and free shoe shines for you wall street folk. This is a proper afterwork cocktail activity for those of your trying to get out of your usual beer-and-piss smelling afterwork chugfest so give something new a try and then we can have high-spirited converstations together! In their more formal words "Life is simply too glorious not to experience the odd delights of quaffing a complimentary Hendrick’s and tonic whilst our chaps shine your brogues. Admission is Free and attire is shoes to shine. " 21+

What better way to fight global warming then with cheap booze and sexy burlesque? That's exactly what goes down tonight as "Brooklyn-based burlesque dance trio Suspicious Package invites guests to a gritty bar on the Williamsburg waterfront to revel in the depravity, carnality and shocking awe of the changing climate in our decadent lifetime... [Additionally,] art installations in the venue will be as important as the show itself, weaving together environmentally shocking art - on and offstage. Performances and art will range from coal miners bathing on-stage to participatory scrap installations, from psychedelic hula hoping to a political figure getting stripped by environmental scientists, and from an adult puppet show to the signature glitter and flesh of the synchronized Dazzle Dancers. The issue of climate change will be given the bawdy and saucy treatment that only burlesque dancers stripping down to their thongs and pasties can do." While Probus style of DJing is mainly centered in house and techno, Justin has the attention span of a child raised on Nickelodeon and Nintendo, which leads him to switch between genres ranging from hip hop to disco to techno frequently in his solo sets. Today's screening features a performance from the choir. Seating is first come, first served so arrive early and be sure to print this pass!

"Known for his stories of ordinary working people, Yasuo Furuhata (“Poppoya-Railroad Man,” ”The Family”) has now filmed another tale by Jiro Asada, best-selling author of “Poppoya” and “Mibu Gishi-den”. THE HAUNTED SAMURAI is a story about Hikoshiro, a low-ranked samurai whose friends have risen in status while he has not. He prays for advancement, but finds only the Gods of Poverty, Disease and Death! Hikoshiro initially scrambles to escape these gods of disaster, then gradually faces up to his situation. The film is a period costume comedy of the common man, with “human” gods and a wide rage of supporting characters. "Like the Spice presents an exhibition of new works by Jason Bryant. Now you’ll have a chance to stare. Jason’s unique approach to popular culture and his lavishly detailed, pristinely finished canvasses make this show a must-see. Mirrors are so shiny that you can’t see them; you can only see yourself reflected back. Jason Bryant’s paintings are a half-silvered mirror, reflecting and clandestinely observing consumer culture and it’s effects simultaneously. Vigorously cropped, these paintings narrow our focus to cultural and emotional markers [...] Bryant’s paintings restage cultural performances like headshots and advertisements but reinvest their stars with a bit of privacy, a bit of agency. Ironically, by cropping out the eyes and other foci, the faces seem more truthfully expressive; they express the importance of the mask. Fake is the new real." Show runs through December 14th.

"What you see in this book is not real--Alison Jackson has photographed the Queen of England on the toilet, George Bush struggling with a rubix cube, Michael Jackson peeling off his new nose, and Ozzy Osborne attempting to eat his chess pieces rather than learn how to play the game. Or has she? The likenesses are uncanny, but of course, her subjects are look-alikes. Her photos demonstrate that while seeing is believing, the truth is another story entirely. In the presence of the artist, Taschen New York will be hosting a book launch for Alison’s newest volume, entitled Confidential. Ms. Jackson will be on hand to sign copies of the brand new book and several of her look-alike models will also be lingering, reading to pose with fans in an almost-celebrity way. Copies are available to reserve in advance for those unable to attend."

Combat figures and a motor accident- the resulting story unfolds across a sequence of planes, personae and tools. Ribbon-like in its installation, this stream of compulsive cataloguing runs along the matte exterior walls of the gallery towards the skyline of the city." Through Jan 13th.

Two in stores in one week... we have some love for Other Music over here it seems.. This time around, its the good folks at Celebration who bring you an intimate free show before their bigger next month. "Celebration's sophomore release, The Modern Tribe on 4AD, has been one of the more interesting new albums this year, and while their live shows (and front-woman Katrina Ford) have been raved about on all the blogs, we're thinking that in the confines of our little shop they will really show their stuff."

Lucky for you, Germany purveoyors of sexy blunted downtempo Boozoo Bajou are in town for a corporate gig. That means you get a chance to hear them spin tonight at the lil' old Ottoman Lounge in Williamsburg. These boys have been tearing up downtempo, midtempo, broken jazz et. al. scene for years now but rarely make it to the states. They are joined by NYC's finest in the same category, Erik the Red (Giant Step) and then entire Bastard Jazz Soundsystem. Highly Recommended!
