"How does a film about Catholic clergy abuse not descend into depression? It helps when the victim doesn’t act like one but uses his own intellect and humor to fight back. Unlike any other look at this topic, “Hand of God” is a poetic and provocative tale of one survivor and his family. Beyond the headlines, statistics and ecclesiastical spin, filmmaker Joseph Cultrera grounds the story of his brother Paul in the details of their Sicilian-American Catholic upbringing in Salem, Massachusetts. From baptism to abuse; silence to dialogue; resignation to action, the film follows one person’s internal and external journey from potential priest to scathing critic." Post-screening discussion with the director led by James T. Fisher, Fordham University.

From 1971 to 1979, Francesco Clemente traversed a decade-long artistic passage through drawings, altered photographs, and conceptual works. Francesco Clemente: Works 1971–1979 is the compilation of a decade’s work inspired by his time in Delhi, Madras, Srinagar, and Rome. Evident in this survey is the investiture of Clemente’s surrealist notions and psychological investigations. It is preemptive global citizenship incarnate, and a look at the beginnings of a masterful career. Poet, art critic, translator, editor and curator, Vincent Katz, will introduce Clemente and discuss his work during a wine reception in Clemente's honor. Clemente will sign copies of his book.

Three actors embody all eleven characters in an antic tour de force, a commedia dell’arte flecked rendition of Shakespeare’s The Tempest... "The remarkable production of The Tempest which forms the occasion for this pair of evenings grew out of an intensive three-week workshop this past summer, when three professional actors (all veterans of the NYU Tisch School’s graduate program), a director and other members of the creative team (also all Tisch veterans) all convened at NYU’s Italian campus in Florence, the Villa La Pietra. Settling on Shakespeare’s magisterial late play, the collaborators decided to revision it in the manner of a sort of primordial Commedia dell’arte travelling troupe, with the three actors taking on all eleven of the parts. Originally intended for a single night’s performance in the fragrant Limonaia of the Villa La Pietra, the production proved just too much of a good thing, and it was decided to bring the troop back to New York for this special reprise in the legendarily atmospheric surround of the Angel Orensanz Foundation (originally New York City’s very first synagogue)."

I last wrote aboutAu Revoir Simone as sort of an obligatory posting back in August when they played the seaport. I knew nothing of their all-female-all-keyboard-all-the-time styling ack then but have since bought a CD (yes bought, and yes, a CD), and its been on heavy rotation in my studio ever since. Its heart felt, slightly candy coated, synth pop all day long but the girls pull it off with flying colours and with lyrics like "you make me want to measure stars in the back yard with a calculator and a ruler baby / I found a letter that discribes how the moonlight will lead me to a distant place that you will be" how can you go wrong. The crew over at Going.com do a solid today by setting the girls up at a free show so make sure you RSVP.

For the ladies, tops are equally reduced and you can even grab a constructed jacked for as little as $70. Fix up for the fall, this one is not to be missed.

I'm pretty sure that when DJ Are Not Rockstars started, DJ's were not rockstars. But times have changed and these party rockers are now at celebrity status (at least in 4 of 5 cities around the country, the rest of the country is all like "WTFBD?" Anyway, I propose a new motto... Rockstars are not DJs. Lets leave the mixing to the mixers and the guitar playing to the guitarists... yeah? If I see one more "DJ Set" where some cool for a minute musician gets up and rocks his iPod I am serious going to puke up all my free well vodka drinks.
Diatribe aside, one man who could seriously cross the boundries is James Ford of Samian Mobile Disco who was supposed to spin tonight. But thanks to the aggressive nature of The Arctic Monkeys, James now has a broken collar and can not DJ (soccer playing accident, no drunken barfight story here). So, Kele from Bloc Party is picking up the duty to try and prove my new mantra otherwise tonight has he drops - most likely - dance rock electro beats and hipster jams. Let me know if he hold it down will ya? Also on the bill, and getting overshadowed due to their local status and lack of a national stadium tour, is The Glass. This live music project of DJ Dominique and DJ Wool exemplifies the grittier NYC take on live electro. Tonight is there release party so go out and support your hometown heroes!

Soundfix is like my long lost college roommate now that I have moved on from that phase of forced co-habitation in my life. Back in college and post college (I guess that puts me in post-post college?) I'd always have the please of living with people with excellent, diverse musical tastes that reached far beyond my familiar realms. I can thank these folks for introducing me to the likes of Manu Chao, Damien Jurado, Oliver Mtukudzi, Cesaria Evora and a host of other musicians far off my beaten path. Now I have Soundfix, who time and time again present me with these fantastic breaking bands with familiar sounds but unfamiliar names. Tonight is no exception as The Cave Singers play an intimate free show before their bigger performance at Mercury Lounge tomorrow. Date: Sunday, October 14th Time: 3:00pm - 6:00pm Location: The Yard (400 Carroll St) Cost: $5
So while the Gowanus Canal does have some sort of inexplicable oily greenish film to it, I do think that the Gowanus Harvest Festival sounds like a good time. "The fall-themed extravaganza will take place at our favorite Brooklyn spot, The Yard -- a lovely little patch of green on the banks of the "gurgling" Gowanus. A day of pony-rides, pumpkin carving contests, local vendors, canoe-rides, fresh produce, live music, and Oktober brews flowing late into the night." There will be live music from Two Man Gentleman Band, Hot Time Harv's Rollercoaster of Kicks, Casa de Chihuahua, BJs - NY's hottest Rockabilly Trio and $mall¢hange. Vendors include Saxelby Cheesemongers, Red Jacket Orchards, Treats Truck, McClure's Pickles, Community Juice Truck and Brooklyn Kitchen. Plus an open bar at 8pm, compliments of Schwelmer.
Date: through Friday, October 26th Time: Weekdays 10:00am - 8:00pm, Weekends 11:00am -8:00pm Location: 33 W. 17th St. btw 5th and 6th Ave Cost: Free
As usual, I am happy to tell you all about the bi-annual Triple 5 Soul sample sale. I can speak from years of experience here when I say it's a great place to stock up on super cute clothes at not too much money. While things aren't exactly cheap they are definitely way marked down from their retail prices! Go, shop, and by lots of stuff!
Date: Tuesday, October 16th Time: 9:00pm - 5:00am Location: Sullivan Room (218 Sullivan St.) & Lion's Den (214 Sullivan St.) Cost: Free with RSVP
Om Records has been on a bit of a revival kick as of late, expanding beyond their foundation of impressive San Francisco house a la Miguel Migs and branching into the worlds of hip hop, tech house, and other assorted dancefloor goodies. Tonight they bring their west coast roster to the city for a massive 8 hour, 2 venue mix of live acts and DJs. Any one of these artists - from Colette to J Boogie - could easily headline the show so to get them all together, for free, is a real treat. High on my personal list are Zion I and The Grouch who drop their laid back hip hop over at the Lion's Den and Chuck Love who's twisted sub-bass fueled acid house has been on constant rotation as of late. Stellar line-up all around.
Date: Tuesday, October 16th Time: 7:00pm Location: Barnes and Noble Union Square (33 East 17th) Cost: Free
This evening catch an appearance from bestselling British author Nick Hornby, whose new book is Slam (Penguin, October) and his friend, singer-songwriter on-the-rise Josh Rouse, whose latest album is Country House, City Mouse (released on his own Bedroom Classics
label), discuss and perform their work. Journalist Katherine Lanpher hosts the program. Admission is free and seating is first-come, first-served.
Nick Hornby is the author of the novels How to Be Good, High Fidelity, About a Boy, and A Long Way Down, as well as the memoir Fever Pitch. He is also the author of Songbook, a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award, and the editor of the short story collection Speaking with the Angel. The recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters E. M. Forster Award for 1999 as well as the 2003 Orange Word International Writers' London Award, he lives in North London. His new novel, Slam, is about teenagers and written with a slightly younger readership in mind but have no doubt it's vintage Hornby: funny, humane, touching and unfathomably spot-on.
Country Mouse, City House is Josh Rouse's seventh full-length album, recorded over six days in Spain. The album explores themes of death, isolation, nature, religion, and dreaming, and expands upon his trademark "70s singer/songwriter" sound. Says Rouse, "That's my favorite style of music, so that's what I do. I, and many
of the people I work with, am obsessed with the sound and production of the 60's and 70's. Put simply, it just has something that a lot of modern records don't have." Since starting his own label, Bedroom Classics, two years ago, he's released Subtitulo and two EP projects (Bedroom Classics, Vol. 2 and She's Spanish, I'm American, a project with Paz Suay).

So you've got your house covered at Om and your hip hop covered at 205 tonight... but what about the electro kids? Well while Hiro is busy booking the hottest DJs from 2 years ago this week, Intimo brings the best electro acts of 2008 to the floor this evening. The obvious go-to on this one are The Loose Cannons who play there first live full band show in NYC in as long as I can remember. They're kind of like the Audio Bullies mixed with a Studio B party vibe. Its high energy dirty synths and party vocals all night long. There's also a special guest DJ late night that I've been promised will make me happy I stayed out after my bedtime on a school night. But as they won't tell me who it is, you'll just have to show up to find out. Home Video round out the bill. 21+
Date: Tuesday, October 16th Time: 10:00pm - 4:00am Location: 205 Club (205 Chrystie St.) Cost: Free with RSVP
Hyphy meets 80s as the Cool Kids take on 205 tonight for Urb's Hipster Hop CMJ Showcase. These guys are all over CMJ this week but this is def. one of the more high profile line-ups to catch their slung back rhymes and minimal beats. Also on the bill are Craze and Klever who both tout some of the most impressive turntablist skills around. Solid overall line-up.
Today is the Nutty Rice Showroom sample sale. Cut out at lunch and shop Five Crown Tees, Bread&Butta, Rubber Duck, Sugar Shoes, Sugar bags, PF Flyers, Gravis Bags and Mr Chips tees. Tees are 3 for $20 and shoes are $15. Yay sample sale!
Date: Wednesday, October 17th Time: 9:00pm Location:Tea Lounge (837 Union St, Park Slope) Cost: Free
Years back... back back back back when I was in college, I met the most fantastic violinist. He was the type of musician who made the violin transcend - for me at least - beyond all the classical music stereotypes I had harbored into an ephemeral, personal space. Tonight, Skye Steele, is joined by an equally genius group of the young New York jazz elite as Vampire Suit. Best described as Balkan New Jazz, this quintet draws inspiration from various musical settings and cultures including jazz, rock, Balkan music and African music. Tonight is a great chance to see them for free at one of the better underground jazz spots in the city. Put best, "If Bram Stoker's imaginary Transylvania had a jazz scene, the music might sound something like this. (Jazz Review)" Highly Recommended.
Date: Wednesday, October 17th Time: 10:00pm Location: Ottos Shrunken Head (538 West 14th Street near Avenue B) Cost: Free
You've got mixes, remixes, covers, samples, everyone is stealing and borrowing and reinterpreting from one another, so why shouldn't there be a night dedicated to such unoriginal creativity. Copycat is a night of cover songs, remixes and all the hits with DJ Xerox and special guest DJ Dylan Nirvana. Plus, tonight they've got a live performance by Von Iva, all the way from San Fran. I'm told "if janis joplin had an electro band, they would be Von Iva" 21+
Date: Wednesday, October 17th Time: 10:00pm Location: Happy Ending (302 Broome St) Cost: Free Open Bar: ???, 11-12
Happy Ending recruits all their finest and then brings in the cavalry for tonight's See.MJ party. On top of two floors of our favorite locals - Rev McFly, Dre Skull, Rezound, even honorary local Eliot Lipp - there live performances by The Pack, Vyle, and Hollywood Holt. This is like a carry over if you didn't get enough at 205 last night. Throw in an open bar to boot and your there. 21+
Date: Thursday, October 18th Time: 12:00pm Location: In the atrium of the Trump Tower (725 Fifth Ave.) Cost: Free
Do lunch with the Donald today, as he attends a Borders event and discusses his book Think BIG and Kick Ass in Business and in Life. "Bill Zanker used Donald Trump's strategies to grow the revenues of The Learning Annex twenty times in under three years. Both of them have been down and out, and know what it's like to feel the whole world's against you-and both have risen to dizzying heights of success by thinking BIG and kicking ass! This is the first book where Donald reveals his Think BIG attitude."
Date: Thursday, October 18th Time: 7:00pm - 9:30pm Location: The Slipper Room (167 Orchard Street) Cost: Free

Tonight they gather at the Slipper Room for their fall event. The party "will feature short readings by Janice Erlbaum and Tayari Jones, two noted authors whose work has touched on the inner lives of teenage girls, and a musical performance by downtown favorites Royal Pink. Girls Write Now mentees will read from their work at Bluestockings, around the corner at 172 Allen Street at Stanton, from 5:30 to 6:30, giving those curious about the organization an opportunity to see it in action."

Date: Friday, October 19th Time: 3:00pm Location: Borders Columbus Circle (in the Time Warner Center) Cost: Free
It seemed a bit strange to get an email with both Donald Trump and M.I.A. in the subject line, bit I guess Borders is doing a top job of entertaining all of their customers. Today, M.I.A. makes a pit stop at Borders in Columbus Circle to sign copies of her latest CD, Kala.
Date: Friday, October 19th Time: 3:30pm - 4:00pm Location: Rockwood Music Hall (196 Allen St. b/w E. Houston and Stanton) Cost: Free
Marco Benevento is one half of the Benevento-Russo duo and the keyboard player from the now defunkt Fat Mama. He plays hammond with more heart and soul then anyone I've seen in years and his style is a unique blend of jazz, r&b, gutterfunk, soul, traditional jam, and dissonant electro noice. Its rare to see a truely unique musician perform these days and he's got it. Tonight is a rare chance to see him perform for free in the tiny tiny Rockwood Music Hall along with a slew of other bands. If you prefer your music live for DJs, and you are into improvisation or keyboards, this is not to be missed! 21+

"Vertigoes, a large-scale installation by Nate Green and Owen Schoppe adapts forms from toys, games, and amusement rides to create an interactive and kinetic environment where sculpture fosters group engagement and interaction. Spanning two rooms, Vertigoes contains two interrelated sculptures – a carousel and a group of vertically over-lapped teeter-totters surrounded by 75 music boxes attached to the windows of the gallery. Through physical interaction with the sculpture’s mechanical and analog systems audience members will initiate the movement, displays of light and elements of sound, bringing forth the artists’ vision for Vertigoes. Acceptance of this invitation to engage in events occurring within the sculpture results in mesmerizing and disorienting effects. "

A few weeks ago I moved my studio to the Gawanus. What I thought was a simple move to a nearby area turned out to drop my right in the middle of a serious developing artist community! This weekend they celebrate their 11th (so don't I feel dumb not knowing about it) Annual Open Studios Weekend. Up and down that green river you love to hate, artists lofts everywhere will open their doors so you can check out their latest works and studio environments. As the tour guide says "This is your chance to meet face-to-face with the creators of photography, printmaking, video, ceramics, glass, installation, paintings, sculpture, clothing, jewelry, etc. in their own working environment. While most of the studios are located in industrial buildings, some are also in smaller buildings, brownstones or warehouses surrounding the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York." And while we live more in the design world then the art our studio doors will be open (although probbably doing more drinking and hanging out then painting for your pleasure.) So if you make it to 112 2nd ave, come find us! Continues all weekend!
Date: Saturday, October 20th Time: 6:00pm - 4:00am Location: Bar Matchless (557 Manhattan Ave at Driggs, Wburg) Cost: $5

On top of the massive (literally) new body of work by this rising international, fashion Art Director, Pete Rock spins and I am sure there are free cocktails. I know it's not just me, I know that some of you people are gettin' old too. And you know what happens to old people, they become responsible and do things like save money and buy houses. My midday posts are pretty rare so when I tare myself away from watching soaps and eating bon-bons to let you know about dirty, sweaty, nightlife... you know it's got to be good. This one, my friends, is a doozy... Justin Martin, founding member of dirtybird along with Claudee Von Stroke (whom you can catch at APT every month) just dropped a new album on Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly label and is in town tonight to celebrate on the fantastic Love soundsystem. If you like dirty tech-funk and electro house then there is no where else for you to be this evening. I know I dropped a lot of names on this one but one of the world's best DJs (IMHO) from one of the world's best labels (again) is playing one of the world's best sound systems (fact) for free. Get on it!

The United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is holding the first-annual World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. "To commemorate this event, New York University’s Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program and NYU Libraries are proud to present a showcase of rare 16mm films from the Communist Party USA Collection. The screening will be the first public glimpse into a landmark collection donated by the Communist Party USA to the University’s Tamiment Library & Wagner Labor Archives in 2006. The eight short films selected for this program will raise eyebrows and challenge stereotypes by offering fresh perspectives on everyday life in the Communist world. "
"What does it take to be a teenage Cosmonaut? How did camerawork convey meaning in propaganda films of South Vietnam? What music was popular on the far side of the Berlin Wall? What kind of future did the Communists foresee for an independent Angola?
Find the answers in Teenage Cosmonauts (USSR, 1980); Going Up The Line (South Vietnam, c. 1969); Angela Davis Report (East Germany, 1972); What the Wage Packet Does Not Show (East Germany, 1978); We Never Tire of Speaking About Mother (USSR, 1975); Moscow Olympics (USSR, 1980); The Voice of Free Angola (USSR, c. 1976); National Day Celebration (China, 1959). "
With this screening, NYU Libraries and the MIAP Program hope to raise local awareness about the significance of moving image collections to cultural history and collective memory. The program will also highlight challenges faced by today’s moving image archivists, from conserving obsolete formats and prolonging the life of decaying materials, to addressing the ethics of preservation for works historically underrepresented by governments and media conglomerates.
UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is hosted by New York University on October 27, 2007 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Languages and Literature Building, 19 University Place, Room 102. The event is free and open to the public. For additional information on the event, contact Sarah Ziebell or visit www.avheritage.com.
