It’s that bittersweet night where you realize summer’s coming to a close. But Chez Music boss Neil Aline and longtime NYC house staple DJ Angola are tipping the scales with sugar in the form of some stellar DJs this evening. Upstairs with Angola is Busy P, the man behind Ed Bangers Records, the Gallic phenomenon that’s got big room bangers larger than ever with releases from Justice, Mr. Oizo, and even Mr. P himself. Downstairs Mr. Aline’s got another amazing man-of-the-hour in Dixon. Dixon’s label Innervisions, though sparse in output, has released a couple of the biggest tracks of the last two years—Stefan Goldmann’s ‘Sleepy Hollow’ and Amé’s ‘Rej’. Beyond his label’s cred, Dixon’s rep still precedes him. A recent mix for Berlin’s Get Physical Records put him at the forefront of international DJs, mixing together tracks spanning from Thom Yorke to Timo Maas. This night is going to be special from top to bottom… 21+

We are a little late on this one as we have been bombarded with a slew of summer events, but with this one, it's definitely better late than never. The Brooklyn Bridge Park has installed a floating pool which they are calling The Floating Pool Lady. It's a 25-meter, 7-lane floating swimming pool moored in the East River. Besides the pool there is also 40,000 square foot beach where you can lay out, grab a burger, rent an umbrella and enjoy the views of New York Harbor. There are some restrictions due to size and demand, so see below for details.
How does it work? The Floating Pool Lady has a maximum capacity of 175 persons. The pool is 4 feet deep throughout. Swimmers will be issued colored wristbands for swim sessions on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have to wait for a swim session, enjoy some time on the beach. There are concession stands, umbrella and chair rentals, and volleyball and soccer games! Please see below for complete pool and beach guidelines.
What are the swim session hours? Weekdays: 11:00-12:30; 1:00-2:30; 3:00-4:30; 5:00-6:45. Weekends: 9:00-10:30; 11:00-12:00; 12:30-1:30; 2:00-3:00; 3:30-4:30; 5:00-6:45. On weekdays, wristbands are given out one hour before each session; on weekends, they are given out 1/2 hour before each session. Due to popular demand, we are sorry we cannot guarantee the swim session of your choice.

As far as I can tell this will be a pre-screening although those actual words are never uttered... "If you've been dying to know what's on TV this fall and you just can't wait any longer, then you'll probably be pretty psyched to learn about the The Fall TV Preview Party. Get the inside scoop on all the hottest shows coming this fall before anyone else." Show list below.
Some of the screenings you don't want to miss are...
Dirty Sexy Money- Peter Krause returns to TV after Six Feet Under as a lawyer trying to keep the dysfunctional and rich Darling family out of trouble. Since Dirty Sexy was pitched to ABC as Six Feet Under-meets-Dynasty, it is not surprising to see Krause in it, and don't forget about Donald Sutherland. Going for guilty pleasure right out of the gate isn't always a bad thing.
Gossip Girl- The newest teenage soap opera from the creator of the OC, Josh Schwartz. Since it is based on a popular series of books, the show already has a built in audience, plus it stars one of the sisters of the traveling pants, Blake Lively. Wealthy people seem to make good targets don't they?
Cane - It has been discribed as kind of a Sopranos/Godfather Cuban drama, because it follows a wealthy Cuban-American family running a rum and sugar empire. We will personally follow Jimmy Smits anywhere.
Bionic Woman - After seeing what the Sci-Fi channel did to Flash Gordon the hope for this show couldn't have been high. The action is furious, and the ladies hot, so there is something to see here afterall. Plus they have that racist guy from Grey's Anatomy.
Reaper - Best idea for a new show this season. College slacker who has to go catch escaped souls for the devil when he turned 21 because his parents sold his soul to him. Great premise, which often take a lot ot pull off long term, but at least it will be fun for a while.
"Dirt Bag is a collection of worn and torn tote bags exhibited on the walls at Slate Gallery. Accompanying each uniquely designed tote is the story of its journey from the hands of the artists and designer to the floors of parties, parks and travels. Within our mass media culture, the lowly tote bag has become a means of expression where the consumer chooses which design or brand they wish to promote by toting it on their shoulder. Samantha Pleet, Lips Jeans, Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons, Loden Dager, Toujours Toi, Yu Clothing, WOWCH, Alex Coyle, Ashley Leonard and Ghostown Press are a few of the artists/designers who have donated their designs to Dirt Bag."

In from the UK, photographer Suzannah Pettigrew will photograph the first crushON.love experience. Her history of photographing music artists in concert including De La Soul and Timbaland ensure that she IS the perfect candidate to capture the spirit of this special gathering as it unfolds.
IT WILL BE A TWO-CAMERA SHOOT
ONE CAMERA WILL BE SET ON A TRIPOD AND ONE PHOTO WILL BE TAKEN EVERY MINUTE FROM 6.30PM TO 7.30PM AS PEOPLE GATHER AROUND THE “LOVE” SCULPTURE; GET IN IT, CLIMB ON TOP OF IT, SIT UNDER IT, LEAN AGAINST IT… WHATEVER YOU WISH TO DO… THESE PHOTOS WILL BECOME A 4 MINUTE SLIDESHOW WITH MUSIC*.
CAMERA TWO WILL BE BLACK AND WHITE SHOT FREESTYLE TO CAPTURE THE WONDERFUL HIDDEN MOMENTS AS THEY HAPPEN.
Suzannah Pettigrew is a photographer and artist who graduated from Byam Shaw School of Art in London with a degree in fine art. Pettigrew's background of Interior Architecture and Spatial Arts gives her compositions an exciting and fresh perspective. She prefers to work with environments that already exist and transform everyday objects or scenes by capturing their beauty and interest. “I like to see how people react to their surroundings and to each other in these spaces and photograph the outcome."
Pettigrew's interest in photographing music artists and concerts comes through in her portfolio. She explains 'I feel privileged to have been in an environment where I can photograph performances by artists such as De La Soul and Timbaland. Seeing it from the crowds perspective allows me to feel the full experience of the performance. I try to capture the energy of the show reflected from the crowd to the artist.'
She has also photographed Angela Hunte a multi-talented New York based song writer, producer and artist. One of the photographs has recently been published in SESAC magazine in the summer 2007 edition accompaning an article about Hunte.
*Musicians from around the world will be invited to submit songs to accompany the crushON.love slideshow.

Today as I was walking to get a sandwich, I saw a big poster that said "Poop Culture", and seeing as I like poop as much as the next girl, I couldn't help but be intrigued. "Poop Culture's main focus is the true origin of the flush toilet: invented not for sanitary reasons, as conventional wisdom holds, but rather as a tool to help rich Victorians separate themselves from the upwardly-mobile masses during the Industrial Revolution. From that basis, Poop Culture explores how the ideology of waste disposal affects us today in our psychology, sociology, art, economics, the environment, and more." Tonight the author, Dave Praeger, reads and lectures on the book as well as a variety of other poop related matters.

Date: Friday, September 7th Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm Location:Susan Inglett Gallery(535 W. 22nd St) Cost: Free
Artist Andrea Zittel's work focuses on day to day living. She uses virtually every medium out there. I've seen some of her constructed living spaces (where she transforms the footage of an average Manhattan studio into a 5 room apartment), wagon stations (portable living modules) and paintings (cartoony gouaches). Now she, with the help of Susan Inglett, takes on fashion and has created a line of one of a kind "uniforms," which are for sale at the gallery. Tonight celebrate the opening with some champagne and toast this incredibly talented woman. Press release below. Show runs until October 13th.
Susan Inglett and Andrea Zittel are pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the East Coast flagship of the A-Z Smockshop. Please join us Friday from 6 to 8 for an evening of champagne and shopping.
What do fashion and art have in common? Ask Andrea Zittel. Hired as a gallery assistant to the famously chic Pat Hearn, Andrea Zittel did what any budget conscious recent art school grad would do : she created. Specifically, she designed a wardrobe based on her new persona, thereby raising questions about the interweaving of function and fashion, design and life, commerce and art. Her uniforms, as she called them, paved the way for her A-Z work, a series of projects that probe the relationship between human nature and design, whether for the home, the body or the soul.
After years of experimenting with all sorts of concepts, from furniture manufacturing (A-Z Administrative Services) to an isolated property off the coast of Denmark (A-Z Pocket Property), Zittel returns to the gallery as fashion arena and presents the A-Z Smockshop. Coinciding with fashion week, her one-of-a-kind frocks will be sold at ready-to-wear prices at Susan Inglett Gallery in Chelsea. Unlike other artists who have mined similar turf, Zittel's designs are more about everyday use and less about being rarified statements. In keeping with her belief that art should be a sustainable commodity, she invited dozens of talented young artists to play the role of seamstress. The project afforded them income--they were paid a flat rate per dress--and awarded them creative license to amend, embellish and customize her basic pattern. "In a perfect world, the project will be self sustaining," she says. "But I am still waiting to see if I will break even."
In keeping with her personal practice, Zittel recommends that clients wear each frock exclusively for the entire season. Perhaps that's not realistic in chic Chelsea, particularly during fashion week, but the artist hopes her project might inspire a more frugal approach to design. "Our
current state of consumerism is pretty out of whack right now," she says. "Wear what you work." And if that sounds too Marxist, Zittel offers this slogan to slaves of fashion: Liberation through Limitation. Either way, the A-Z Smockshop is bound to tempt the eyes as well as the purse strings. The exhibition opens with a night of shopping and champagne that just might go down as more memorable than the time you found Karl Lagerfeld at H&M.

"As the eyes of the fashion world turn to New York at the fall runway shows, the School of Visual Arts hosts an exhibition of cutting-edge fashion photography that makes fine art of commerce. The up-to-the minute display features six New York-based photographers who are much in demand for images that are as enigmatic as they are seductive. A dominatrix holds court at a library, a man sunbathes with a flock of pink flamingoes and an abandoned lot turns into a nighttime crime scene. Says one artist, “Shakespeare said the world is like a stage in which we’re all players. I perform through the lens.” With a selection of photographs published around the world, it’s clear just how small that stage has become. "

Metis explores the integration of improvised sound and the written word - Metis is an interaction between the short experimental works of six playwrights and the continuous improvisation of six musicians and one lighting designer. The playwrights have each prepared a short experimental piece, inspired by a section of homer's the odyssey. They will perform them script-in-hand, adjusting in the moment as the musicians respond to their performances. the playwrights' words and gestures will serve both as inspiration and as raw material for the improvisers - as their spoken words will be manipulated indirectly and directly via psychoacoustic effects and sound pedals, and their appearance will be colored by lighting improvisation."

This is a pretty tight linup across the board for the electro-hipster-hip hop sect. Front-running things is The Cool Kids who poised to blow up this fall. They are sort of the Sneaker Pimps version of the Wolf Pack with Yo! MTV Raps sensibility refixed for modern consumption. Equally talented are NYC's own 33Hz rocking a live electro rock set. So we get info on a lot of these more proper nightclub events and they rarely make it on the site because (1) I hate door drama and all that "you don't have enough girls with you" crap and (2) the club may be free but at $12 a drink I'd rather send you to see a killer band for $10 with $5 drinks. But, you all know my Slick Rick love - due mostly to his deportation during the golden era of my teenage years - so throw him on your bill and voila… FreeNYC acceptance. So close out fashion week with the wanna be fashionistas (all the real ones are back in LA by now) and catch a free set by Slick Rick. Dress sharp, bring girls, pregame, and don't forget to RSVP. Back in 2005 I took a ride up to Boston for a Glowlab event and was blown away. While familiar with its tenants, the term psychogeography (the investigation of everyday urban life through emerging artistic, technological and social practice) was new to me. What followed was a weekend of lectures, films, workshops, art installations, tours, and parties dedicated to reimagining and reclaiming our urban spaces. This weekend Glowlab takes over New York City with Conflux 2007, their "annual New York City festival for contemporary psychogeography." While the details are too in depth to list here, check the site for all the locations, events, and info. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Probably a year ago, I was stopping by Galapagos to drop off flyers and see what was going on when Spensor the soundman grabs me and is all "You've got to hear this." Swinging from deep house to trip hop to jazzy breaks in the same set The 6 members - led by the musical genious of Broklyns DJ Scottie B and lyrics by Subatomic Sound System's Rhianna - straight crushed it. The (re)Cycle Plays is a free festival of live performances with environmental themes based on the Medieval “cycle plays,” where "common guildsmen and craftsmen performed Biblical morality plays on mounted stages that were moved around the city streets on wagons. THE (re)CYCLE PLAYS revives this theatrical ritual with a series of short plays, dance pieces, musical performances, and special events. Reusing play titles such as The Fall, The Flood, and The Last Judgment from the original Cycle Plays, each performance focuses on ecological issues like peak oil, consumption, and food politics. This series of performances will cycle throughout the day. Three stage areas will be created from reusable, recycled, and sustainable materials and the crowd will be directed to the various stages. All electronics will be powered by bio-diesel." Performance list below.
The Fall
In this mini-musical, Felicia, a passionate eco-activist, lets her boyfriend Arnie, a budding French chef, move in with her after a suspicious fire destroys his apartment. Arnie's unwillingness to adhere to the rules of recycling, blatant disregard for sustainable living and insistence on using unethical ingredients in his culinary experiments drive Felicia to the brink of insanity. Just then, a mysterious figure, known only as Mama, appears with an unexpected solution to Felicia's problems. Is Mama the key to Felicia's salvation … or her demise?

The Trees take on Big Business in a biting parody of “The People’s Court.” Judge God presides over this trial not only exposing Big Business’ greedy motives, but also bringing attention to the hypocrisy of The Trees’ key witness, Liberal Activist. The Burial
Combining Greek mythology, 1960s counterculture, Gap Models, and the music of the Kinks, The Burial riffs on the story of Trophonious, a man was imprisoned in an underground cave because of his crimes. Living away from society gave him the reputation and wisdom of an oracle. Those seeking answers to questions or cures for diseases would offer him honey cakes, hoping to exchange these for a vision of the future.

The Sacrifice
Witness the live creation of art when musician and performance artist Adam Matta performs a street spectacle of “bicycle drawing.” With paint on his tires, he rolls mountain bike tricks onto a canvas of flat boards. In addition, Matta performs his signature beatboxing skills in this piece about our society’s dependence on oil and cars. Matta has played with Matisyahu, Kenny Muhammad, Shara Worden, Reg E Gaines, Savion Glover, and Beatboxer Entertainment, at venues such as the Tribeca Film Festival, Lincoln Center, Town Hall, the World Famous Apollo Theater, and Madison Square Garden.

Leave it to those kids at 3rd Ward to keep blending art, parties, and global consciousnes . Tonight they present Back to Analog, a combination of art, music, and eco-friendly fashion that will transform the space into "a tantalizing sensory experience that allows guests to experience tangible alternatives to mainstream consumer culture." DJs, free food, fashion shows, and lots of art are on the plate for tonight. More details below.
note: we originally had this posted as Friday... sorry for the mixup.
Sights::
The visual compliment to Back to Analog’s mission will be expressed through the visual art of selected artists. Their work addresses the present state of gratuitous consumption that has come to define our society. Their pieces address this issue directly or conceptually, and have been encouraged to recycle materials for their work, though this is not a strict stipulation.
Styles::
The fashion component of Back to Analog will be fulfilled by up and coming eco-chic designers. Their work will be integrated into the event by models sharing a common make-up and hairstyle aesthetic, intermingling amongst the crowd.
Sounds::
Keeping in line with Back to Analog’s theme of recycling and reusing, music spun will be an eclectic mix of old school hip-hop tunes that feature heavy samples and the freshest beats.
Plus free food and drinks - what can be better than that?

Yeah, this is my 10 spot. Where I break the rules of FreeNYC so you can hear great new music. This week it's Cassorla, the self title'd band from guitarist Ben Cassorla. Ben's worked with everyone from Slick Rick to Thelonious Monk's drummer Ben Riley over the years and is finally bringing his own sound forward. The result is a jazzy swing through the smoke filled parlors of 1920s harlem. Add the dirt of Krystle Warren's voice and we're talking some serious heat.

I stumbed in to last year's TONY back to school party by accident... wondering out of the Whole Foods fresh of (and still crunchy from) Camp Bisco to see Juan MacLean performing a full band set midday in the park for free. WOW, that was some serious surprise as a dozen or so equally crunchy kids texted all their friends to come down and dance. Chelsea disco boys mingled with college kids as the whole place erupted into an improptu dance party. This year, TONY has decided (probably for financial reason) to have a "battle of the bands" instead. Way less excited to watch sub-par music talent in the USA's most band-laden city, but at least you can score some free swag or comedy passes from the vendors.

Original Pink Floyd song writer Syd Barrett was one of the most famous creators and characters of the psychedelic era, writing over one fifth of the tracks on their greatest hits collection. Yet, in a facinating act of self-imposed anonymity, Barret had not conducted an interview or released music between the early seventies and his recent passing. This fascinating documentary traces the creative and personal tumult of Barrett's days with Pink Floyd, and the fallout from his psychedelics induced breakdown.
"The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story retells the fascinating story of the start of one of the largest and most influential bands in rock and the drug induced breakdown of their original song writer and lead man. Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright retell how Syd’s slip from reality haunted the band for many years and this is clearly demonstrated in the tracks Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Wish You Were Here. The film incorporates rare early footage of the band performing; including a live show at the UFO Club, and an appearance with former landlord Mick Leonard on Tomorrows World. There are also insights from former girlfriends, landlords, flat mates, producers, managers, friends and famous fans."

At the very least, I eat asparagus once a week, so this "stalkumentary" hits close to home for me. "For over thirty years, Oceana County Michigan has been the Asparagus Capital of the World. Now its residents and family farms take on the US War on Drugs, free trade, and a fast food nation, all to save their beloved "roots." Oceana's farmers take their fight from Senate Trade Hearings to marketing think-tanks, from the US Department of Agriculture to the mountains of Peru. One rural American community is scrambling to keep its proud identity and source of survival against impossible odds. Discover why one little vegetable matters so much." Tonight, check out the premiere of the 60 minute version of this award winning documentary. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Anne de Mare and Kirsten Kelly, plus asparagus inspired treats, and probably a whole lot of stinky pee!

"Growing up in Greenwich Village, New York City, in the 1960s, Danny [Krivit] was surrounded by music. By 1970, Danny was already a vinyl junkie & an amateur DJ, But DJing as a profession wasn't fully realized until 1971, after a neighbor/friend of Danny's introduced Danny to one of his artists - none other than the legendary James Brown. The Loft [...] is where he began his long time friendships with DJs Larry Levan and Francois K. He is now resident DJ of the award winning "Best Party In NYC," The 718 Sessions @ club Deep in Manhattan. Earning the status of "King Of The Re-edit" since the early 80's, he's been a major force in bringing attention & world acceptance to the art of editing, even spawning an onslaught of imitators. Danny Krivit is one of the key players in the history of NY night life & most definitely one of the very few people who can honestly say he's consistently DJ'd in all the hottest clubs in NY for the past 35 years!"

I write like crap when it comes to honest musicians I really like. So I'll let Spin do the talking on this one: "Brooklyn's Takka Takka seem overly casual or even apologetic at first, but there's a sneaky intensity to the minimalist urban rock n' roll on this wonderful debut. Resisting cynicism and self-pity, wry frontman Gabriel Levine sings the way people talk, resembling a nicer Lou Reed as he offers moral support to self-conscious loners who get caught up in society's games, only to 'break under pressure.'"

"Eyebeam is pleased to present Interference, the second in a series of three group shows commemorating the organization's unique role in supporting artists experimenting with, and critically examining, the impact of new technologies in creative endeavor. The show will feature eleven artists and collectives whose projects tackle the ever-shifting boundaries between public and private space and consider the ways in which these limits are understood, utilized and represented. Employing a diverse array of media and strategies including data visualization, performance, community engagement and intervention, the artists address issues of autonomy and access, in some cases becoming actors within the very environments they describe." The opening reception will be followed by a live VJ performance as collective montage by Angie Eng, Benton-C Bainbridge and Caspar Stracke. All Ages
The artists featured in Interference are: Angie Eng, Jill Magid, Forays (Geraldine Juarez and Adam Bobbette), Carrie Dashow and Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg, Trevor Paglen and the Institute for Applied Autonomy (IAA), Robert Ransick, Yury Gitman, Carlos Gomez de LLarena, Graffiti Research Lab (GRL), Caspar Stracke, neuroTransmitter, and Eyebeam's R&D Lab with Jonah Peretti and Michael Frumin.
In the Eyebeam spirit of open source and DIY, the gallery exhibition will be supplemented by workshops, public actions and interventions for the duration of Interference, including live demonstrations and tours with the show's mobile pieces: Carlos Gomez de Llarena's interactive communication balloon, Urballoon (2002-2004) GRL's Laser-Tag equipped Mobile Broadcast Unit (2007) and Yury Gitman's wifi-delivery vehicle Magic Bike (2003).
The concurrence of surveillance, authority, intimacy and trust are at the heart of Jill Magid's Lincoln Ocean Victor Eddy (2006-2007), a multi-part account of 5 months spent shadowing a NYC police officer on his night shift. For Interference, Magid will display L.O.V.E work as an audio and video installation.
Urban Attractors, Private Distractors (2007), Angie Eng's collaborative, cross-continent video blog takes as its subject cultural conventions in the definition of private and public space. Together with groups of teens in New York City and Ho Chi Minh City, Eng probed the psychogeographies of place through a series of actions documented and shared on the video blog.
Forays' (Geraldine Juarez and Adam Bobbette) piece entitled Field Notes...(2007), addresses the ways in which the delineation of interior and exterior or private and public space can be used towards political ends. Turning to the naturally occurring form of the cocoon, which has been adapted by community garden activists as a means of colonizing trees, the artists propose open source architecture and hacked materials as forms of grassroots activism.
Caspar Stracke, who as a 2003 Eyebeam Resident developed the work Points of Presence (2005) - a rotating screen projection of footage from NYC, Mexico City, Berlin and Shanghai - now presents Urban Particle Supercollider (2007), a collective urban image project shown as three linked animations of street objects from Seoul, Tehran and NYC.
Artist and geographer Trevor Paglen, who received a 2006 Eyebeam Production Commission, partnered with the IAA, an anonymous collective of artists, designers, activists and engineers, to develop Terminal Air (2007) a project that explores complex interconnections between government agencies and private contractors involved with the United States Central Intelligence Agency's extraordinary rendition program.
Robert Ransick's Casa Segura (Safe House) (2007) is a small public access structure in the Sonoran desert of Southern Arizona, just north of the Mexican border. Located on private property and equipped with a dynamic bilingual web space Casa Segura acts as a temporary haven to Mexican migrants crossing the border, providing a means of communicating across national and state lines by logging their journeys in virtual space.
Artist Carrie Dashow and shape note singer Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg present The 13th Screen (2007) an installation of community-shot video, original shape note songs and ephemera from the Route of Progress tour, part of the touring community art, video, and music project, the Subliminal History of New York State (SHNYS) (2007), which traveled to six towns and cities along the Erie Canal this past June and July.
Also on display will be documentation of neuroTransmitter's The FM Ferry Experiment (2007) a mobile radio station aboard the Staten Island Ferry during September, as well as FundRace, which lets you track people's political contributions by name, address or neighborhood. The interactive web application will be shown in its original (2004) and current iterations, and is a project developed by Jonah Peretti, Michael Frumin and Eyebeam's Research and Development Lab. FundRace 2008 was updated by and is hosted at Huffington Post.
