"Elia Kazan’s landmark movie stars Marlon Brando as a washed-up ex-prizefighter working on the docks for the local gang boss. The death of a childhood friend, ordered by this gangster, fills him with guilt because he is unwittingly involved in the murder. This hardscrabble tale of treachery and deceit also features Eva Marie Saint, Karl Malden and Rod Steiger. A conversation with filmmaker Jacob Burckhardt, a screening of his short Marten's Bar (5 minutes, 1976) – a poetic tribute to a solitary life shot in Manhattan and Red Hook, Brooklyn and based on a poem by Edwin Denby – and a screening of his father Rudy Burckhardt’s Up and Down the Waterfront (8 minutes, 1946) – an elegy to the city’s waterfront with its crates and boxes unloading in the morning, lonely men sitting on half-broken docks in the afternoon, and sailor bars at night – precede the film."
