Robot Death Cult Installation and BBQ - May 6th, 5 to 7PM
Robot Death Cult: A movement whose bizarre mix of unwavering adulation fuses with staunch nihlism to embrace the banality prescribed to us through the tenets of advanced capitalism. Using fashion they deconstruct, disassociate overwhelm the senses with hypersonic images to the point of non-existance. They aim to replace the major attribute of consumption so that that which is hidden becomes most visible and thus gratitous- leaving us with a desire only to desire. Their unyileding positivism states as affirmitive axiom: If we are all machines meant to consume, then let us buy everything. Robot Death Cult dissassociates itself from the self destructive irony so cherished by postmodernism, and embraces the new autonomy of the consumer held back by years of self deprecating reactionism.

Speakers from the Worldwide Marijuana March, NORML and High Times magazine. Tables with materials on medical marijuana, the ibogaine cure for addiction, industrial hemp and a healthy program to curb the worst effects of global warming by reassigning environmental criminals to clean-up and water reclamation. March against the BIG LIE in public policy, from the War on Drugs to the War in Iraq! Tulia, Texas is the template for W's phony War on Terror--just like the so-called "health threat of marijuana" equals the "weapons of mass destruction." Both never existed! Come out and protest intervention abroad and criminalization at home under the War on Drugs. Protest the incarceration of a generation and the calculated disfranchisement of majority democratic voters thru the Drug War!"

Date: Friday, May 11th through May 19th Time: 11:00am - 6:00pm Location:David Zwirner (519 W 19th St) Cost: Free Thai food!
The current exhibition at David Zwirner coincides perfectly with the recent Gordon Matta-Clark exhibition at the Whitney, with a reconstruction of Matta-Clark's "Open House".. a dumpster which he turned into a living environment for homeless people. But the real attraction for hungry art lovers is Tiravanija's reconstruction of "Untitled 1992 (Free)" that originally transformed the 303 Gallery into an impromptu kitchen back in 1992. As part of the exhibition, a false 303 Gallery stands inside David Zwirner, and Tiravanija's Thai cooking of rice, couscous, vegetarian curry and a chicken curry are available at no cost to anyone and everyone. Don't be shy, there are tables set up, just help yourself to the giant rice steamers and pots. I had lunch there today after a morning of gallery hopping and dined among gallery assistants, students, construction workers and passers-by. You can even bring it to go! The exhibition goes until May 19th, so get over there! Make sure you bring a drink, this art is SPICY!
Click below for the press release and more on the artists
Opening on March 21, 2007, David Zwirner and Gavin Brown’s enterprise are pleased to co-present an exhibition by Gordon Matta-Clark and Rirkrit Tiravanija, to be displayed in David Zwirner’s 519 W. 19th Street gallery. The show will include one seminal work by each artist, both of which focus on the transformation of space in the area of 89 & 112 Greene Street in SoHo – Matta-Clark’s in 1972 and Tiravanija’s in 1992. Gordon Matta-Clark, a key figure in the activity and growth of the New York art world from the late 1960s until his death in August, 1978, was heavily inspired by the dematerialization movement of the late 1960s. Perhaps best known for his architectural “cuttings” – sculptures made from slices of buildings slated for demolition – Matta-Clark was co-founder of FOOD in 1971, a functioning restaurant that employed artists and hosted art/food performances. He also helped Jeffrey Lew establish 112 Greene Street (now White Columns), the first alternative gallery in New York with an open exhibition program. Matta-Clark is currently the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, on view through June 3, 2007. The exhibition will then travel to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA from September 16, 2007 through January 7, 2008. Featured in this exhibition will be a recreation of Open House, 1972, a work that, like much of Matta-Clark’s oeuvre, applies new meaning to abandoned and commonplace materials through the act of recycling. Originally located in the street outside 89 Greene Street (a second version was later installed outside 112 Greene Street), the dumpster held architectural fragments and construction-site detritus and was featured in Matta-Clark’s film of the same year, also titled Open House. In the film, the dumpster is converted into a makeshift living environment for the homeless. Made to function (physically and conceptually) outside of the commercial gallery system, and thus a critique of the value of art and commercial real estate, Open House represents Matta-Clark’s career-long desire to create a new way of seeing through the transformation of discarded objects into new works of art. Rirkrit Tiravanija’s Untitled 1992 (Free), was originally exhibited at 89 Greene Street in the former 303 Gallery space in 1992. 303 Gallery was on the second floor at 89 Greene Street, just a few feet from Matta-Clark’s Open House site. In that exhibition, Tiravanija took the contents of the entire gallery – kitchen, storeroom, bathroom and office – and publicly deposited/displayed them in the main gallery space. In what had been the gallery office, he set up a provisional kitchen where Thai curry was cooked and served to visitors. Taking his historical cues not only from distinctly non-Western Thai traditions, but also from Alan Kaprow, Michael Asher, and Matta-Clark, Tiravanija’s seminal exhibition helped create a pivitol moment of rupture from the wealth and abundance of the previous decade. For this exhibition, Tiravanija will make a ghost of the 89 Greene Street space in plywood. The kitchen – which will include the same stools, tables, cookers, pots, pans, and refrigerator, along with the same 15-year old food waste – will be used and shown in what will be the “office.” Untitled 1992 (Free) will be exhibited for the first time in New York since 1992.

I love Cop Shoot Cop. They were the hardest, rawest, most NYC thing to come out of the No Wave movement combining bass drenched minimalism, boredoms low fi, and east coast hard core sensiblitity. There was serious energy there. While Umami is nothing like Cop Shoot Cop, their also use two basses to drive home low rumbling beats but with a much sloppier garage style. Maybe that's your steeze. If so, check them out tonight. If not, go listen to more Cop Shoot Cop!
I can't believe an entire month has passed since the last Punkslope. This month Chris Turco (Dead Image, Moonball, Trans Am, Kukim, Government Issue) and David Natoli (The Fader, Shadows and Tall Trees, Grey Hour) join the bevy of dude residents; Nick Cain, Joel Tee, Jason Jordan (aka Jordy), Mike Falis, Jordan Makow and Al Key. Danish visual artist Karoline H. Larsen and American visual artist Jasmine Zimmerman introduce the first of 3 consecutive weekends of impromptu installations today in McCarren Park. Join dozens as they sculpt city space through 21,000 meters of intertwined colored strings and transform the part from its usual hipster haunt into something you'd see in a Polyphonic Spree video. "When you pull the strings in new directions, the structure gradually changes, and you create new space, and new possibilities arise." More below.
When moving in public space, we normally move directly from A to B, and at the same time a set of unwritten rules direct the way we move. The way we move affects the way we think and act. When Karoline H. Larsen and Jasmine Zimmerman invite New Yorkers to join the COLLECTIVE STRING-WEBS NYC, new ways of moving, joyful exchange, and new functions evolve. Participants get to string their way with 21.000 meters of colorful string, tracking string across the areas in a giant collective web marking of public space.
Citizens need opportunities to communicate and collectively generate a positive atmosphere in public city spaces. This project offers the possibility of doing so through a shared creative experience.
Increasing traumatic tension in public space causes suffering everyday in Copenhagen, New York, and many other western cities. "The problem is not the trauma itself, but not being able to feel pleasure". Creative Actions chooses not to analyze the reasons behind this. Instead we move to provide opportunities to reconnecting with each other and public space in hopes of creating positive change.
COLLECTIVE STRING-WEBS NYC gives citizens concrete aesthetic involving structures to produce creative energies collectively as an answer to these days of anxiety, aggression, isolation, alienation and high speed stress in public city space.

No Selector Sundays is a collective of forward thinking local musicians involved with and inspired by DJ culture. Jesse and Evan continue to hold down the evening on a weekly basis, bringing in a healthy assortment of talented live musicians, along with some of the best DJs the city has to offer. The focus is on great music in all of its forms, culminating in a mish mash of funk, soul, afro, latin, jazz, house, broken beats, disco, electro, and assorted danceable breaks. This week DJ Morsy (Nanachill/The Good Foot) and resident Jesse Mann man the decks with an eclectic mix of beats to booty shake to while JACK, a live project headed up by percussionist Peter Barr, will be playing funk/soul jams on the "stage."

Their sound has an electro-acid-sleaze-punk sensation combined with sleazy rock n roll throbbing keyboards. According to Amazon.co.uk, "Dead Combo are the new Suicide." The band will be performing alongside The Horrors and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in the end of May '07 and are currently working on a record with Mossman (LCD & Primal Scream).
YOUNG LORDS
An electric band of fashion and music outlaws, Young Lords are more Fun House than Sweetheart of the Rodeo and more Beggar's Banquet than Honky Tonk Heroes. Hailing from Austin, Texas, Seattle, Washington and NYC, the five-piece found an intersection of sonic styles that incorporated their diverse musical histories.

Celebrated New York artist, filmmaker and author Keren Cytter presents two groundbreaking videos, Atmosphere and Dreamtalk, in this solo exhibtion. Full of contradictions, Atmosphere and Dreamtalk are elusive as they are blunt. Dreamtalk presents an ironic love triangle involving a couple and their male friend. Atmosphere is also about a love triangle, centering on two women who live together and appear to be involved with the same man. The characters position against each other, competing. Parroting the reality TV show in Dreamtalk, the remaining couple asks themselves in the last moments, “Who is the looser, who is the winner?” So, what is happiness, what is resolution, and what is emotion? Keren Cytter’s work raises all these questions presenting the viewer with a situation of a constant present where memory is being claimed in the midst of an unknown future.

Barbés continues their bi-weekly Brooklyn Independent Cinema Series showcasing the "best in contemporary independent cinema" tonight with Able Raises Cain. "As far back as she can remember, Jenny Abel has seen her father appear on television under a variety of aliases, fooling news reporters and talk show hosts. He was continually plotting new ways to infiltrate the media with one of his seemingly absurd causes. Abel Raises Cain attempts to explain the true motives behind Alan's hoaxes and, in the process, allows for a different perspective on how the media operates. The film echoes Abel's ultimate message — that you can't believe everything you see, read or hear." Trailer below.

My favorite mid-week, cheap eats, muchathon is back in a big way. Now that Dino of Luke and Leroy has left NYC for the greener pastiers of Philly (don't worry the club will live on and you can still strip to your skivvy's every Saturday with tranny's and the folks who love them at Rated X) Taco Tuesday has found a new home. Munch on some cheap authentics SoCal Carne Asada Tacos (or Veggie ones if that's how you roll) for a mere buck and was them down with $4 margarita madness. This is the new regular home.... mmmmm... tacos.... Monster & Bacholar Party of the Brobots DJ

Date: Tuesday, May 22nd Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location:Happy Ending (302 Broom St) Cost: Free Open Bar: Well Vodka, 11:30-12
Happy Ending is always good for a little late night booze-fest and tonight is no exception. Their new party, Dirty Disco mixes all the sounds the kids are diggin' these days... or in 1987... disco (duh), brit pop, indie, and new wave. While this will never replace the insanely debaucherous Sh!t Hammered weekly where I once say 4 Hassids shoot tequila while 2 lesbians made out on a bed in the middle of the dance floor - it should still prove to be a good time.
Date: Tuesday, May 22 Time: 11:00pm Location: 205 Chrystie St at Stanton Cost: Free

Best described as dance music with afterburners, The Falconator and crew are true vinyl alchemists, mixing disparate recordings deftly in order to enthrall the masses. I have only stopped in, but 205 is a good joint that is worth checking out. Also walking distance to Happy Ending, if you wish to make an evening of it.

By now you all know my love for Blue Owl... Its nice to have a not so pretentious cocktail lounge downtown that you can grab a drink after work without too much fuss. Well now you know my love for Gin as well (current obsession is No. 209 from San Francisco ) so when you combine the two you've got my new favorite after work spot. Plus, the cocktails are top notch, music laid back, and happy hour goes until 11 with $5 drinks!

"Does collaboration constitute compromise, act as a catalyst, or infer complexity? There has been much debate in recent times around collaboration in new media art practice. Amanda McDonald Crowley, Executive Director of EYEBEAM art and technology center in New York, will raise questions, deliberate on the issues, and propose some answers:
Does collaboration necessitate compromise? Does it mirror the practice of artists working in this field? Are new media practitioners even artists? What is the role of the curator in a collaborative cultural endeavor?" More below...
Amanda McDonald Crowley is the Executive Director of Eyebeam art and technology center in New York. In 2005 Amanda relocated from her native Australia where she had been based while working nationally, as well as in Europe and Asia, as an arts producer, facilitator, researcher and curator specializing in creating new media and contemporary art programs that encourage cross disciplinary practice, collaboration and exchange. Positions she has held include serving as the Executive Producer of the 2004 International Symposium of Electronic Art (ISEA2004), developing the event from concept to major conferences, exhibitions, performances, concerts and site specific installations on a ferry in the Baltic Sea and locations in Estonia and Finland; Associate Director for Adelaide Festival 2002; and Director of the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT), an organization with a national brief to foster links between the arts, sciences and new technology.
Date: Wednesday, May 23th Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location:Fuse Gallery (93 2nd Ave btw 5th and 6th) Cost: Free
How about a "metaverse" art installation to get you all hot and bothered on a Wednesday. Afternoon. Futurist Jerry Paffendorf and "metaverse architect" Christian Westbrook exhibit "Destroy Television", an interactive virtual art installation, tonight concurrently at the Fuse Gallery and at GHava{SL} Center for the Arts which just happens to reside in the world of Second Life. Personally, I can't even manage my First Life so I am not really looking for another one but I'm loving this concept. "Destroy Television is an avatar in the user-created 3D virtual world of Second Life. But unlike other
avatars that are owned and controlled by individuals, Destroy is an expression of everyone who controls and speaks through it at destroytv.com..." More below.
As a result it encompasses many simultaneous voices and motivations, of which any given user can be one. For the duration of the show it will be recording a searchable video lifelog of its experience that visitors can easily explore, edit, and comment on. They can also click through its live online video and visit Destroy as an avatar inside Second Life, surf over to its lifelog afterwards and find themselves in its perfect memory as part of the menagerie. Additionally on display in Fuse Gallery and at GHava{SL} Center for the Arts will be an installation documenting Destroy's real life conception beneath the kitchen sink as well as its early days in Second Life.
Destroy Television unleashes numerous true intelligences on a world that's simultaneously finite and limitless. People who visit the avatar in real life at the gallery and in Second Life at the art center will be encouraged to interact, communicate, and perform with the avatar, and by doing so enter its lifelog, unforgettably.

"Three Times the Charm" will showcase thirty visual artists, four bands, and three d.j.s over the course of an evening celebrating explosive artistic talent. There is no more appropriate location for this evolutionary event than Galapagos, an island for displaying art in the sea of creativity that is Brooklyn. Feel, for one night, the eclectic energy of this evolving artistic ecosystem, an event in direct contrast to the critical atmosphere of New York City's often icy art world.
Art Party NYC is an art project in itself, an artist curated
experience, sculpting a supportive environment for emerging artists to
share their talents and expose the beauty that lies in underground art
in New York. Each Art Party emerges from the prior, absorbing ideas
and new participants as the series gains momentum. The theme of this
night is "chance" as the project expands in size and scope to a bigger space, a larger group of artists, and a broader audience. At this stage, the collaborative connections will be obvious—artists serve as muses for one another, fashion designers are costumers for bands, dancers and painters are co-workers, and many pose as models and actors in both video art and photography.
Art Party NYC is both a raging good time, and a foray into the epicenter of a salon-like community of creative production. Come celebrate with us and experience the exciting energy of chance, where anything is possible. The party is FREE, and launches at 8 pm,
rocking late night. Original artwork will be available for purchase.

There are a couple of "back in the day" spots from the pre-Guliani era of NYC that just seem too goo to be true. For me, it was probably The Wetlands (for everything from Concrete Jungle and The Skadanks, to my first Phish show [re: I'm a dirty hippie]), Liquid Sky on St. Marks, Save the Robots (now Midway), and Bar XVI. The original DJ crew that rotated through this place names like Nickodemus, Evil Dee, $mall ¢hange, Chill Freez, Jazzy Nice, DJ Elevator Man, Swingsett, Chris Love, Richie, and Pete Nice, have gone on to be influential and ground-breaking players on the seen (Turntables on the Hudson, Giant Step, Beatminerz, Ism, Stuck on Earth). Tonight, ALL the above mentioned unite for a throw back party at their old spot (now sutra). Not to be missed.

Last Expansion Team event I went to was a huge banger with Swindle magazine on the old Frying Pan. Great party for Swindle, but everyone was like "Expansion who?" Turns out, these guys are the musical arm of one of the most unbelievable motion graphics shops here in New York, EyeballNYC. Tonight they kick off their new music label with more intimate celebration involving live sets by The Beasts of Eden, Groove Collective co-founder Genji Siraisi, and Balún. I've been a long time Groove Collective fan and Genji's got a dope new downtempo CD out, Censorsh!t, so I'm real excited to hear what it sounds like live and Beasts of Eden do that neo-retro indie rock thing just right. 2hrs of open bar is no slouch either. Munch on some cheap authentic SoCal Carne Asada Tacos (or Veggie ones if that's how you roll) for a mere buck and wash them down with $4 margarita madness. This is the new regular home.... mmmmm... tacos.... Monster & Bacholar Party of the Brobots DJ.

Date: Wednesdays Time: 5:00pm - 6:00pm Location: Blue Owl (196 2nd Ave, downstairs) Cost: Free Open Bar: Bathtub Gin, 5:00pm - 6:00pm

Join Generation Engage this afternoon for a free screening of Street Fight. "Street Fight chronicles the bare-knuckles race for Mayor of Newark, N.J. between Cory Booker, a 32-year-old Rhodes Scholar/Yale Law School grad, and Sharpe James, the four-term incumbent and undisputed champion of New Jersey politics. Fought in Newark's neighborhoods and housing projects, the battle pits Booker against an old style political machine that uses any means necessary to crush its opponents: city workers who do not support the mayor are demoted; "disloyal" businesses are targeted by code enforcement; a campaigner is detained and accused of terrorism; and disks of voter data are burglarized in the night. The battle sheds light on important American questions about democracy, power and -- in a surprising twist -- race... " More info and Trailer below...
Both Booker and James are African-American Democrats, but when the mayor accuses the Ivy League educated Booker of not being "really black" it forces voters to examine both how we define race in this country. "We tell our children to get educated," one Newarker says, "and when they do, we call them white. What kind of a message does that send?"
Street Fight tells a gripping story of the underbelly of democracy where elections are not about spin-doctors, media consultants, or photo ops. In Newark, we discover, elections are won and lost in the streets.
Generation Engage is a nonpartisan youth-civic-engagement initiative that connects young Americans to political leaders, to other civic organizations, and to meaningful debate about the future they will inherit. I haven't posted a magazine party in a while now (they tend to get a little upset with us when we do), a lot of my favorite things come together tonight so I thought I'd share. First you've got Planet Magazine who - despite leaning towards the "appeal to our advertisers and lean more towards the mindless - but well written - editorial" route - are a fantastic travel magazine for a new, globetrotting generation. Then you have 205 Bar, which is too cool for school but in a very good, fun way. Then you've got 10 Cane rum, the Hennesey of Rum's (because its from the same company). So there you have it... party it up!

Check out Art Cards for the best details on that.
