Axel Pahlavi presents a series of painting tonight in rememberance of the loss of his brother. Requiem "consists of an allegorically visaged trilogy steeped in personal myth; confronting us is a black hooded teenage god, a cyclonic vision of heaven and hell and an intersection of good and evil centered on a resplendent knight sprung from a mammoth, gruesome jawbone. And a series of paintings based on the knotted premise of ‘mask’, which systematically, through each deranged and deformed countenance, melancholically strain to covet peace yet emit a tremulous unease far from such quiet." Full Art-Speak below.
In this instance, “Requiem” is not a predictable ironic reference to a body of work signifying the containment of some vanishing bit of ideological nostalgia for the practice of painting, vestiges of an art historical woe due to inevitability. Pahlavi, in earnest, presents a dedication to the loss of his brother. These works splay open and cry out as the artist attempts to endure his own story. The artist’s mechanism, his tools and his daily existence becoming an unavoidable trajectory in itself, regardless, in spite of and apathetic to clever rhetoric and art history.
“Requiem” consists of an allegorically visaged trilogy steeped in personal myth; confronting us is a black hooded teenage god, a cyclonic vision of heaven and hell and an intersection of good and evil centered on a resplendent knight sprung from a mammoth, gruesome jawbone. And a series of paintings based on the knotted premise of ‘mask’, which systematically, through each deranged and deformed countenance, melancholically strain to covet peace yet emit a tremulous unease far from such quiet. Pahlavi holds his audience in a kind of benign albeit frightening grasp, speaking to us of glory without letting us forget the ache of torment. The artist describes this reckoning as, ‘singing the pains of the world’.
A jaded viewer must beware as he is facing, in this work, an unfettered rush of truism. Pahlavi gives us no rest, no smug criticism in which to hide, only the raw entreaty to join his chaotic almost psychotic effort to calm and quell, to understand the ramifications of nothing less than life and death as it sidles right up next to you, snuggles in and cold cocks you in the face.
“I was telling myself, that the human being can sometimes be marvellous. Those humble beings, thrown in an unchained cataclysm, their happiness crushed and despite everything, they kept encircling the body of a king who was on the point of making the great voyage towards the unknown.”- Axel Pahlavi, 2007.

It's time for another instalment of Dorkbot, the group of people that gather to discuss some of the weirder things people try to do with electricty. On deck tonight are Gabe McNatt's Wind-Composition that "allows the user to adjust the volume and pan of nine different sound-layers," Caitlin Berrigan Viral Confections... edible chocolates shaped into the molecular structure of the hepatitis C virus, and Zach Smith RepRap open source 3D printing technology. Full details below...
Gabe McNatt
"Wind-Composition" is a software program created in MAX-MSP that allows the user to adjust the volume and pan of nine different sound-layers. The idea is for the user to create his/her own soundscape, or composition; a completely original work that exists once and only once, and then disappears without recreation. He/she uses his/her ears and own sense of fancy to compose a throw-away-composition. The nine sound-layers consist of synthetically created wind-noises, and pre-recorded sounds created by wind. Despite the user's ability to control the overall volume and pan levels, each layer constantly and randomly modulates giving the sounds a more elusive, and thus more characteristic wind quality.
Caitlin Berrigan: Viral Confections
"Viral Confections" are edible chocolates shaped into the molecular structure of the hepatitis C virus. These designer chocolates illustrate the inventive protein structure of the hepatitis C virus. A model of the virus was printed as a rapid prototype from a 3D algorithmic illustration of the virus from the Protein Data Bank. The chocolates were then cast into this molecular form. These delicious truffles do not carry hepatitis C. Each one was lovingly handmade from 72% Belgian roasted cocoa. Desire to eat the enticing chocolates is mixed with a repulsion for the infectious virus. This unnerving dialectic has proved to be an exciting and approachable way to ignite discussion and create awareness about an extremely prevalent and underrepresented disease. Dorkbots will have the opportunity to consume the chocolates at the meeting.

Zach Smith: RepRap
RepRap is an open source 3D printing technology that a Maker can truly appreciate. It uses a thermoplastic extruder to melt and lay down a fine stream of plastic. Feed it an object file, and it will hum to life. Line by line, layer by layer, your object slowly appears. Forget the cutting edge, the melted edge is here!

"The US labor movement has created some of the most effective political graphics and images in history. However, work and workers, along with the labor movement are often depicted as experiences of the American past: photographs of children in factories in the early 1900s, paintings of historic strikes and Rosie the Riveter. Now the labor movement needs new images of the issues confronting workers today. Graphic Work, curated by Josh MacPhee and Zoeann Murphy is a collection of 40 posters aimed at representing the new fact of labor.

Its National Poetry Month and we're going to try and bring you some serious wordsmiths over the next few weeks. First up we've got Laure-Anne Bosselaar and Elaine Equi reading from their new works.
I love to lick English the way I licked the hard
round licorice sticks the Belgian nuns gave me for six
good conduct points on Sundays after mass... [Bosselaar]
Beginning with a harrowing account of her childhood in a Belgian convent, where she was placed at the age of four, Laure-Anne Bosselaar 's new collection, A New Hunger (Ausable Press, 2007), shows us how early emotional and physical deprivation can be overcome by intelligence, humor, curiosity, and determination. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Stephen Dunn wrote of this volume, "Laure-Anne Bosselaar, with her wonderful third book, has become more than just good. It's an occasion to mark and to celebrate."
Elaine Equi's new collection, Ripple Effect (Coffee House Press, 2007) consolidates thirty years of work, showcasing her ability to transform almost anything—a list, a diary entry, advertising speak—into sophisticated, germane elixirs of pop culture and high art. Floyd Skloot wrote recently of her work in The New York Times Book Review, "Thoughtful, witty, curious, Equi has known from early in her career that 'the air is full of secrets' and has gone out to find them, to bring them 'down to earth where all poetry begins.'"

"the:artist:network is pleased to present Particles, a solo exhibition by Gabriela Galván.This exhibition speaks of particles on the verge of exploding as well as the concentration and the dispersion of its energy..." The opening is sponsored by Jose Cuervo...so I'm wondering if that means free tequila? Show runs until Friday, May 4th. Show details below.
".... It is the construction of the abstract registry of time. The processes that constitute Galván's work explore control and improvisation between relations that include encounters with daily life. Galván's recent works register moments in a specific time and space. Paradoxically, her interests rely on the ephemeral object and the moment in time where construction and destruction simultaneously happen. It is a relation between the noise of the street and the observation of time. The exhibition consists of drawings, installation, and an action on the day of the exhibition's inauguration. This action will concentrate on elements where the individual conscience co-exists with the collective work. "

Putting as much importance in having danceable music as delivering brilliantly witty lyrics, ilash's songs are immediately memorable. " [Christen Thomas for Tripwire.com]

Hepburn's most memorable and identifiable role.”

Asssscat improv has been going on for years and every time I've been it's always been hilarious (yes, hilarious). It's hosted by Amy Poehler and always features a who's who of comedy writers from The Daily Show, Conan, SNL and tons of others and they're all surprisingly good improv performers. Celebrities (actual cool ones) frequently drop by to hone their skills. Tickets are distributed at 8:15, but definitely get there earlier. It really is a lot of fun AND they serve cheap beer!

The Cooper Union Lecture series continues tonight with Everyware author Adam Greenfield who will discuss how the computer has begun to disappear into the fabric of everyday life. Relatively little thought has been given specifically to how these changes might unfold at the scale of the city and how the advent of a truly ubiquitous computing will change our urban places—both the way they're built, and the way we live them...
Greenfield's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with Christina Ray of Glowlab, a creative lab exploring psychogeography as it relates to contemporary art; Soo-In Yang and David Benjamin of New York architectural practice The Living and area/code principal Kevin Slavin.

Join the Princeton Architectural Press as they celebrate the release of "Suburbanization of New York" with a reading and book signing by contributors Francis Morrone (NYU), Eric Darton (best-selling author), and Matthew Schuerman (NY Observer). The book asks some fundamental questions as the infrastructure and populace of New York enters a new chapter of unparalleled up-market expansion. "What does the future hold for the legendary metropolis, gateway to immigrants and strivers, magnet for builders and dealers, muse for artists and dreamers? Will the current political, economic, and social influences dull its once-famous creative edge and culture of opposition? What will become of the special allure of New York?"
The Suburbanization of New York presents fourteen timely, provocative articles that explore the radical transformation unfolding in New York City and raise serious questions about the future of any metropolis struggling to maintain its unique identity. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the field of urban studies or the forces shaping our cities today." For more information, see the Princeton Architectural Press blog here.

I've seen a lot of clubs come and go here in New York. The Academy, The Wetlands, CBGBs, Coney Island High... and this Friday I will add Tonic to that list. This legendary LES spot was a breeding ground for experimental, forward thinking musical collaboration. One night would be Marc Ribot stumming along with a who's who of the city's jazz resurgance and then next night would be IDM nob twiddlers. Tonight, the Pure Fire crew - who have held Wednesday's down forever with broken beat grimey goodness - team up with Brooklyn Beats Records for a SubTonic farewell party. "This is an open call for all denizens from SubTonic's illustrious past to come down and play one last time. There will be a sign-up sheet for 5-10 minute slots for you to plug and play or DJ one last handful of vinyl/bytes." Subtonic is already closed so this will go down in the main space. (tear) 21+

If Nublu means anything it means “inclusive nature” (rather than exclusive). It means we will find the center of balance and cosmology no matter whom is in the band…" [Butch Morris. ] This is next level jazz at its finest. Super Family is a Norwegian band inspired by everyone from Arcade Fire, to the Rolling Stones, to the Killers (and some Radiohead too). Their syncopated rhythms and falsetto vocal harmonies sort of fast track them to next years Urb Top 100 and they are dropping a new album this month and it's fantastic (hear some tracks here). This is not them. This is Saheer Umar (Tokion) & Jamal Ali (Turntable Lab) DJing a much more hipster centric party. But don't fret... it's still going to be a lot of fun. These cats know music so if you're looking to grab a drink tonight then this may be it.
" Several artist, students and professors from Pratt Institute will be printing large 4 foot by 8 foot woodblock prints with a steamroller. That’s right a giant street flattening heavy man driven steamroller. This will be the third year of the event that was conceived by artist and professor Dennis McNett. This year will include over 40 different blocks by 40 different artists, live music, on site t-shirt printing, print sales and more. The event takes place outdoors on campus between Pantas and Pratt Studios."
This project was originated to push printmaking outside of the bounds of the medium and get students to engage in not only the challenge of carving a huge 4 foot by 8 foot woodcut print, but working collaboratively with one another and participating in an event larger than themselves. It also allows students to blow off some spring steam in a creative manner. The first event was a huge success. The images have always been impressive. Prepare to be amazed.

Ill P. is back with her wednesday night parties at Triple Crown. This week DJ Equal and Teddy King join her at the decks.
By far, one of the sickest, most crunked up LES-tinged hip hop party nights every month is Mixtape Riot! Costed by the Beatards, Mixtape Riot! "takes songs you know and love and remixes them by pairing a capellas with new original productions from ThE BeATaRdS." Its 4 turntables, live singing, and anything goes by far. Tonight is a seriously stellar lineup with P.O.P (Illvia from Kudu), CX Kidtronik, and more joining in.
I think Defidelity 6-5000 have a thing for indoor pool parties. First, they rocked the tables over at the Hotel QT and tonight they take over the Gansevoort's swanky G-Spa. Tonight, the boys take on the sounds of Motown with their new weekly, "Hitvsille USA." Expect Marvin Gaye to Smokey Robinson and all points in between.
DJs Doug Lee, Jeremy Campbell, Andrew Wilder, Jon Santos, and Markus MIller relive their glory days of Subtonic Saturday with one final farewell to the space on this, its last week before becoming a hotel lobby. "For those who weren't around for this, we used to do this regular party many moons ago at Subtonic. As you may have heard, Tonic will no longer be with us as of next week. There is too much I want to say but I'll keep this email brief: We are having a one last night jam with the old Subtonic Saturday DJ crew to bid our farewell."

Gallery 1199 is the only permanent union exhibition space in the nation. Their new show, Graphic Work: Imaging Today’s Labor Movement runs April 5th to April 30th. "The US labor movement has created some of the most effective political graphics and images in history. However, work and workers, along with the labor movement are often depicted as experiences of the American past: photographs of children in factories in the early 1900s, paintings of historic strikes and Rosie the Riveter..." continued below
Now the labor movement needs new images of the issues confronting workers today. Graphic Work, curated by Josh MacPhee and Zoeann Murphy is a collection of 40 posters aimed at representing the new fact of labor."
Graphic Work is a project of the Workforce Development Institute, the Bread & Roses Cultural Project of 1199SEIU, and JustSeeds.org
I started liking photographer Elena Dorfman with her series "Still Lovers", which depicted those sex toys Real Dolls and their owners. Her latest project, Fandomania: Characters & Cosplay, examines the growing subculture in which members dress as characters from Japanime and video games and intergrate these costumes into their daily lives. Think Dungens and Dragons to the extreme....or that one lady in Trekkies who wore her uniform to work. Show runs until Saturday, May 19th. More about the show below.
An exhibition of new work,by photographer Elena Dorfman coincides with her publication Fandomania: Characters and Cosplay(Aperture, 2007), as seen in The New York Times T Magazine, will be on display at Edwynn Houk Gallery in New York. In this series photographer Elena Dorfman examines the pop culture phenomenon of “cosplay” (a merging of “costume” and “play”) in which participants dress up in costumes––and live part of their lives––as characters from video games, animated films, and Japanese graphic novels. Explorations of identity through portraiture are at the forefront of Dorfman’s work, with the blurred lines between fantasy and reality a continuing theme.

Klaxon fever is running wild in New York as those don't-dare-call-us-nu-rave electro rockers seem to be everywhere. Their live shows (or at least the one I caught a few months back in the basement of Midway) are insane and super high energy and I can only assume that tonight's DJ set Hiro will be the same. I do recommend you spend the $10 and catch them live at Studio B next week as they may not be back in the states for some time. Killer support on the line-up from Steve Aoki Guns'n'Bombs, Steve of Soulwax & More. Plus its the Kaiser Chiefs afterparty. whew!

Curlyhead was bellowing Puccini
and making the boat rock.
The sun shone like a Majolica clock.
The sea boiled noisily.
I lay down like a child in a box.
It was my birthday.
Above, on a cliff,
a mule pissed on us.
Then the dragging chain
as we lurched into the chasm.
Archaic cooings: Byzantine blue.
J removed her tortoiseshell glasses,
crossing her pretty legs.
C thoughtfully stroked his goatee.
I sat up, as in a coffin
after three hundred lovers.
Starboard, an oar-blade splashed
emeralds against valedictory black.
Once again, description,
unemotional shorthand
for sublimated wisdom,
fails to conjure what we felt;
the poem years for something more.
Like me: childless.
My love & I: gutted words.
My prick: like an instrument for an altar
or surgeon's table,
shiny & maleficent.
Stalactites,
like jaws, bedeviled us.
Sunlight struck the sandy bottom:
Giotto blue, the Tennessean said;
Florida blue, the tobacco queen said;
Cognitive blue, I, the unanalyzed, said.
Nothing from Curlyhead, who rowed vigorously.
Then a serpentine thing,
with five pairs of legs grasping at us,
appeared beside our little boat,
unidentifiably damaged,
as the young man was,
who boarded our bus going home.
His arms flailed spasmodically.
His face was pinched like a retarded boy's.
I dedicate this poem to him,
whose unneediness shamed me,
demanding I acknowledge the best in myself,
whose arms & legs
racked the blue lapidary air,
as if burdened by ropes, lantern, & pick,
while he bantered brilliantly to himself,
the mind struggling
to overcome the stick that is the body.
[The Blue Grotto by Henri Cole]

Sotheby's Photographs' current exhibition features works by Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, Andres Seranno, Andres Kertesz and many other important artists. The auction is next Thursday, so the exhibition runs on the 7th floor until Wednesday. Check the link for times.

A pampered African prince wants more out of life than the beautiful woman
to whom he's engaged. So he heads to Queens, NY to find a mate who will fall
for him, not his riches. Joined by his trusty sidekick, the prince plunges
into a low-paying job at a fast-food chain -- and a romance with the boss's
daughter. Starring Arsenio Hall and Eddie Murphy.
He has been the source of more game-winning hits in the history of the Boston Red Sox, and Yankee fans will recall his performance in 2004 as the reason why they cringe when he comes to the plate. Boston's David Ortiz takes a break from vanquishing baseball opponents to shake some hands and sign some copies of his new book "Big Papi:My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits" written with Tony Massarotti of the Boston Herald.

"In 2001, a group of exciting young string players envisioned the creation of a conductor-less chamber orchestra, based upon democratic principles, whose focus is to be purely on music-making. Catch them tonight at the weekly Music Monday's series.
In 2001, a group of exciting young string players envisioned the creation of a
conductor-less chamber orchestra, based upon democratic principles, whose focus is
to be purely on music-making. This organic approach, passion, and commitment
resulted in the creation of ECCO. Its members are some of the most talented young
chamber musicians, soloists (many of them making appearances with such orchestras as Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia), and principals in major American
orchestras. Translating this diversity of experience and virtuosity into a unified
ensemble approach, ECCO combines the strength and power of an orchestral ensemble
with the personal, intimate nature of chamber music. Their Town Hall (NYC) debut in
February of 2004 confirmed ECCO’s position as the most exceptional ensemble of the
new generation whose fresh interpretations of new and old works coupled with highly
nuanced and joyous playing earned them standing ovations and an immediate
re-engagement.
