If you cross over the East River, living in the shadows of other more popular and well known art museums, you will find the Brooklyn Museum. With 560,000 square feet on its side, and minus the heavy foot traffic that most Manhattan Museums tend to get from tourists, this museum has a lot going for it. Every first Saturday of the month admission is free in the afternoon (thanks to big name corporate sponsorship) and there are a slew of events for the whole fam. Today is the last chance to see the creepily huge and small sculptures of Ron Mueck. If you haven't seen this yet, I highly recommend you do. Click here for the full evening's line up.

Disabled & Looking For Love
Winner of the 2006 Grierson Award for Best Newcomer
Director: Claire Richards
Length: 60 Minutes
Finding a partner is hard enough, but imagine if you're in a wheelchair or you can't talk. What do you do? How do you find a girlfriend who can handle your autism? How do you “get lucky” if you don't have a leg to get over?
Winner of the prestegious Grierson Award for Best Newcomer, Director Claire Richards chronicles the real life adventures of four people with disabilities who are looking for love with the help of a group called 'The Outsiders' in the groundbreaking documentary, “Disabled and Looking For Love.”
“The idea a disabled person should want to have a sex life is still considered fairly taboo,” said Richards. “You might even think that because someone has a disability they can't have sex, or isn't interested in it, which may or may not be the case. Without explicitly talking about sex and love the film wasn't going to get to the heart of the issue. I didn't want to dwell on sex though, the film is about much more than that - I wanted to concentrate on the idea of following people who were looking for that special someone and talk about feeling love and care for someone - it's a universal desire and that was my point.”
The Crippendales
Winner of the Best International Documentary at the New York International Film Awards
Director: Havana Marking
Length: 24 minutes
Remember "The Full Monty" in which six unemployed steel workers follow one man's dream and together form a comedic male striptease act? Now, imagine that same plot line, only this time the leader uses a wheelchair, and his buddies all have physical disabilities.
That's the idea behind the new documentary entitled "The Crippendales." Winner of the Best International Documentary at the New York International Film Awards, the 24-minute short follows Lee Kemp, a hepcat wheelchair user who wants to be a stripper. He recruits his friends to learn to bump, grind and dazzle the ladies at the "girls' night out" clubs. The film received rousing support from audiences at the most recent NY Film Festival.
Director Havana Marking explains the reason behind making the film was to “challenge the assumptions many people have about the sexuality of people with disabilities.” Will she succeed?

A Place To Bury Strangers: A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called "the loudest band in New York". This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called "loud" rock and roll that's out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they've accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that's clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make. A Place To Bury Strangers does not so much play songs as allow them to pour out.
Sh-Sh-Sh-Shark Attack!!!: sh-sh-sh-Shark Attack are four dudes who might be what happens when Tim Burton and Alex Cox decide to form a bar band. Sporting song titles that verge on the nautical, the historical, and the hysterical, their mishmash of surf guitar and the bizarre, carnival-esque feel of ‘50s cult classics escapes mere novelty. Perhaps it’s born from their reliance on proto-punk propulsion and choruses occasionally reminiscent of early-'80s California hardcore, producing songs that are arty without ever succumbing to pretension, and, perhaps most importantly, really, really fun. But then there’s their bracing live show, further proof of their potency, featuring crowd-diving guitarists, a twitching lead singer who dons a baby blue pinstriped tux with no shirt and, of course, shark paraphernalia. [Tal Rosenberg, Stylus Magazine]
The Vandelles: Thanks to their ripping guitar lines- and even finer harmonies- The Vandelles define the distaff side of the Noir Rock sound. Their biggest hits, including Lovely Weather and Roving Rex, remain among the most potent and enduring recordings of their era. Formed as a merger of two local vocal groups, The Mercenary Gang and Del Black Aloha, The Vandelles take aspects of Link Wray and The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Ronettes and My Bloody Valentine, Buddy Holly and The Ramones, to create a sound thats uniquely theirs.
Mofos: With hot-rod imagery, demented surf guitar licks, and leather-clad southern regalia you'd think Mofos were from Southern California, not New York. But a listen to their music makes it seem like they're from another planet altogether. Combining elements of Dick Dale, Link Wray, the Ventures, Motorhead and the Ramones, Mofos have created a genre unto themselves. Call it "Surf-instro-Metal", call it "Spy-fi Spaghetti Western", but better yet, don't call it anything at all, just pop this disc into your CD player and experienced a sonic assault that's as visceral as it is original.

Location: Barbés 376 9th St at Sixth Ave, Park Slope

Summary: By far, one of the coolest spots in my lovely new home (and one I seem to never go to) is Barbés. They carry the same vibe as a Tonic or a Nublu but with more of an air of the traditional NYC jazz club of lore. The only prerequisites are artisty, quality, and a personal voice. So I was stoked to find out that twice a month they run the Brooklyn Independent Cinema Series showcasing the "best in contemporary independent cinema." Tonight is dedicated to the rebuilding of New Orleans with two shorts and a feature length. Check below for details on tonight's films and keep abreast of their future events on their website.

"Welcome to what will be the fastest art you have ever experienced. Shortly, a bank of flashbulbs will illuminate the object in front you. Protective eyewear has been provided for viewers who wish to abstain; however, the process will be rendered ineffective by the eyewear. The danger is mild, comparable to being photographed in a studio. If you will direct your attention to the mirrored circles at the far end of this room, we will begin in (countdown)…
Now if you blink rapidly and look around the room, you will see the experience persisting on your retina, on route to your permanent memory. We assure you that the optical effect is quite temporary and will be converted to memory in a matter of minutes. You have now witnessed the briefest possible art experience.
Thank you for your participation."

THE FABULOUS ENTOURAGE have been described as ³freaky boy-girl art-punk sensations!" (LA WEEKLY). Compared to Devo (by the NEW YORK TIMES), Scissor Sisters (by PAPER MAGAZINE) and The B52¹s (by LA SPLASH MAGAZINE), this keyboard/bass/drum trio, joined by two Supremes-style female vocalists, has already earned a cult following for their over-the-top live shows, including notable performances at the 2006 Whitney Biennial, Knitting Factory Mainstage, Joe¹s Pub, Viper Room, Bowery Ballroom, and even a ³a floating concert² aboard a boat as it ferried around the Statue of Liberty. They've just come off a summer of playing shows in NYC and on the West Coast, including opening for hot British band Hot Chip. AM NEW YORK writes fondly,"[TFE's] live show kicks ass!"
ADIRA AMRAM (bottom photo) is all about music and comedy. She was selected by Jane Magazine as one of the editor picks for May 2006. Her solo show "Adira Amram is: An American Idol" ran at the PIT for the month of October. She is currently working on her new CD tentatively titled "Hot Jams for Teens Volume 3."

The Pull-Out Method

Cost: Free
So that 10pm open bar is over and now what do you do? Why not take in a little live music for a change? The Pull-Out Method crew continue to bring their electro dance awesomeness to Midway tonight with live sets from Ashford Breaks and Frontier Brothers. "This Friday's party promises more rawk, more sweat, more drinks, and more importantly, more facial hair, with the Beard (Flavorpill, PopMatters) splitting the decks upstairs with some very special guests from gypsy punks Gogol Bordello. Downstairs, in between and after the bands, DJ Young Elz (the Simple Mission) keeps the indie kids dancing."

After a short break (yeah, we missed you too, but figured your livers could use a rest), the Pull-Out Method is back to rock Midway with a very special birthday edition. Swing by this Friday to catch Locksley ( www.myspace.com/locksley), who just got back from touring with the Rapture and stealing hearts with their modern garage-rock tunes, at 1:30am. Not to gush, but this band makes me swoon too.
Ford & Fitzroy (http://www.myspace.com/fordfitzroy), a hot indie-rock set-up last seen rocking the Gothamist Movable Hype show, storm the stage at 12:30am. If you like Modest Mouse, you'll dig these dudes. But fuck floating on -- you'll be rocking out, I guarantee.
Eli Reed of True Loves spins '60s soul and R&B jams, and will have you twisting and shouting for more. Dance-offs have already been challenged and accepted, so take a number, and bring your best moves.
And if you need another excuse to tear yourself from MySpace and stalking your ex on a Friday night (the guilty shall remain anonymous): we've got another late-nite drink special from 1-2am. You know, so you can work on finding your next ex.
Come find me and I'll give you a hug and/or a drink ticket. Find guest hostesses with mostesses (and bday girlz) Kathryn and Kerrie and give them a hug and/or a drink.

All of the depicted beasts have been thought at some time to exist (generally through a handful of eyewitnesses or as cultural stories). Each beast is accompanied by a brief description of the creature written by Paul Hughes, Felicia Gotthelf, Heidi Broadhead, or Rob Lightner. It was birthed/curated by Jacob Covey and marvelously edited by Karin Snelson.

Location: Botanica Bar (47 East Houston St bet. Mott and Mulberry)

I have been known to compulsively purchase very, very inexpensive items from flea markets/sidewalks/dollar stores. These unnecessary purchases are almost immediately stored in the recesses of my closet where they remain forever because they're too, well, too cheap for me to wear outside. You can only imagine my delight when I found out about tonight’s swap party at Botanica Bar. Not only will I be able to release my cheap gems to other bargain-addicts like myself, but I’ll be able to pick up enough of other people’s free shit to ensure that my closet is never, ever even remotely barren again. As if this isn’t amazing enough, the party is free and the alcohol will be flowing to beats provided by the lovely DJ Shakey. Thrift On!

Cooper Union Dialogue Series with Newt Gingrich & Mario Cuomo
FreeNYC Event Flyer Date: Wednesday, February 28th
Time: 6:30pm
Location: Cooper Union, East Hall (7 East 7th St. at 3rd Ave.)
Cost: Free
Newt Gingrich, who served as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999 and represented the State of Georgia for 20 years, and Mario M. Cuomo, who served as governor of the State of New York from 1983 to 1995, will meet to discuss issues facing presidential candidates in the 2008 election. Journalist and host of "Meet the Press" Tim Russert will moderate the discussion. Sharing the belief that national and international issues facing presidential candidates deserve full discussion and analysis in the style of Lincoln's time, Gingrich and Cuomo will issue a challenge to all declared presidential candidates to come to the Great Hall and address the American public in the same manner Lincoln did 147 years ago when he delivered his "Right Makes Might" address at The Cooper Union.
The site of Abraham Lincoln’s historic “Right Makes Might” speech, which catapulted him to the Republican nomination for president, will once again be the site for great political discussion as The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art hosts former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and Former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Newt Gingrich in The Cooper Union Dialogue Series, on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. in The Great Hall at The Cooper Union, located at 7 East 7th Street at Third Avenue. The event will be moderated by Tim Russert, host of NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The event is sponsored by The Cooper Union.
At this event, Cuomo and Gingrich will issue the “Cooper Challenge” to all presidential candidates: to eschew the 30-second soundbyte in favor of a broader dialogue, with an open invitation to candidates to address essential issues at Cooper Union’s Great Hall – in person, and in detail – just as Lincoln did 147 years ago. It was Lincoln’s 1860 “Might Makes Right” speech at The Cooper Union which propelled him to the Republican nomination, and ultimately, the presidency.
Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer, co-chair of the U.S. Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, immortalized Lincoln’s speech event in his 2004 book, Lincoln At Cooper Union. Mr. Holzer, Cooper Union President George Campbell Jr., Mr. Cuomo and Mr. Gingrich will be available for media interviews before and after the event.
