BillDance
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Tuesday, January 2nd
Time: 8:00pm
Location: Karl's Klipper (40 Bay St, Staten Island)
Cost: Free
Summary: Normally I wouldn't recommend hopping the Staten Island ferry in the middle of winter for a film festival. But seeing how we are hitting 60º temps on the regular, I'm thinking an after work cruise by the Statue of Liberty followed by a free mini-film festival is a nice night out. Just a block of the ferry tonight, check out BillDance, a collection of films on music and dance from an Elvis documentary to Brazilian Hip Hop. Tonight is a screening of Dorothea Carl’s Pausen Musik which translates from German into “Music Break”. This documentary tells the tale of a group of German students who within a week’s time create their own songs. They find the topics and lyrics. They work out musical ideas and record a CD.

Tomas Henriques: META-EWI and META-EVI (customized wind controllers)
The META-EWI and the META-EVI are respectively a modified EWI (Akai's Electric Wind Instrument) and a modified MIDI EVI (Steiner's Electric Valve Instrument), to which were added a whole new set of controllers based on sensor technologies. The goal of these two projects was to achieve specific innovative levels of performance techniques and musical expressiveness that go beyond what is currently possible to do with either a monophonic wind controller or a monophonic acoustic instrument and to take advantage of meaningful performance gestures and body motions that are naturally used by a performer of such an instrument. These modified instruments succeed at stretching the expressiveness and the range of musical gestures found on the original instrument allowing the musician to have a more complete and far reaching control of a great variety of meaningful musical parameters.
Dan Trueman: PLOrk
The Princeton Laptop Orchestra (PLOrk) is a newly established ensemble of computer-based musical meta-instruments. Each instrument consists of a laptop, a multi-channel hemispherical speaker, and a variety of control devices (keyboards, graphics tablets, sensors, etc...). Dan Trueman, co-founder and director of PLOrk, will introduce the ensemble, describe its design and a number of the pieces written for it, and share video and audio recordings from recent performances.
MEAPsoft: MEAPsoft!!!

MEAPsoft was developed by a collaborative group of students and faculty from LabROSA and the Computer Music Center at Columbia University. Fantastic First Saturday
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Saturday, January 6th
Time: 5:00pm - 11:00pm
Location: Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway)
Cost: Free
Summary: I know at this point we have really pounded the idea of the Brooklyn Museum's First Saturday into your heads, but here is a refresher course. If you cross over the East River, living in the shadows of other more popular and well known art museums, you will find the Brooklyn Museum. With 560,000 square feet on its side, and minus the heavy foot traffic that most Manhattan Museums tend to get from tourists, this museum has a lot going for it. Every first Saturday of the month admission is free in the afternoon (thanks to big name corporate sponsorship) and there are a slew of events for the whole fam. This month check out two fantastic exhibits which FreeNYC took a field trip to last month, Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer's Life, and the creepily huge and small sculptures of Ron Mueck. Both exhibits only have a few weeks left so check 'em out while you still can. Click here for the full evening's line up.

The Outsiders opening at Stay Gold
FreeNYC Event Flyer

Date: Friday, January 12th
Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Location: Stay Gold Gallery (451 Grand St)
Cost: Free
Summary: Stay Gold Gallery is pleased to present the first installment of a series of exhibitions entitled "The Outsiders." The exhibition seeks to investigate the depth and significance of contemporary outsider art. Inspiring the show's title is S.E. Hinton's 1967 novel, The Outsiders, and its portrayal of teens struggling to gain a sense of belonging on society's edge. Hinton's powerful depiction of rebelliousness and vulnerability achieved even greater notice in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 cult movie of the same name. On screen, Coppola's young actors explored the impulse to stick together that becomes the necessary survival strategy of young outsiders..."
...Of course many would argue that such an impulse is innate to human nature, and that there are countless instances of its study long before The Outsiders became popular. The intensely independent poet Robert Frost presaged the underlying theme in his eight-line meditation on the loss of innocence that comes with onset of time, "Nothing Gold Can Stay." Indeed, this poem was also the inspiration behind the naming of Stay Gold Gallery.
Fusing together these motifs of rebellion, solidarity, and endangered innocence, Stay Gold Gallery presents a new generation of visual artists in the first annual exhibition, "The Outsiders." Like the characters in the novel, these artists do not belong to the mainstream contemporary art scene and yet they are simultaneously bound by their outsider status.
Featured artist Mike Giant, who coincidentally owns an Albuquerque tattoo shop called "Stay Gold," puts a contemporary spin on vintage pin-ups and other traditional tattoo flash images. Also showing is Hisham Bharoocha, the ex-member of noise rock duo Lighting Bolt and the experimental band, Black Dice. Hisham's photography and video reflect both his RISD education and his outside-the- norm musical endeavors.
Kim Schifino, from the band Matt and Kim, exhibits linoleum and wood cut-outs that juxtapose everyday scenes with bored superheroes in a whimsical palette. Kim has been featured at Cinders Gallery. Nathan Gwynne's work also works with a tension of opposites: his assertive and rebellious characters embody the possibility of failure or dissolution at any moment.
A native of Iceland, Thordis Adalsteinsdottir has been featured at The Reykjavik Art Museum and 101 Gallery in Reykjavik, Iceland, as well as Stefan Stux Gallery and Dandruff Space and Shroud in New York. Her work has been described as seeming both animated as well as hieroglyphic while not belonging entirely in either world.

Summary: Maybe because its "en español," maybe its because it has the lowest "boy in eyeliner" quotient of all the LES hipster parties, or maybe its just that the music is really really good. Whatever it is, Nacotheque is by far my favorite scenester think going on right now (please note that scenester things are really low on my list in the new year...) Resident DJs Marcelo Cunning and Amylulita really have their ears on some next level sounds. La Strada, La Dance Party, La Grand
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Sunday, January 14th
Time: 10:00pm
Location: The Grand (41 East 58th St off Madison Ave)
Cost: Free from 10:30-1*
Open Bar: Vodka drinks, 10-11:30
Summary: So it started like this (warning, long post). La Strada, by far my favorite Fellini film, is being projected tonight amongst dancing and overpriced cocktails at The Grand (which used to be Aubar which used to be 58 for those of your staying on top of super-swanking midtown clubs for europeans). Awesome! I love this movie and - while I would much rather watch it and actually hear the film, subtitles and crazy Italian circus performers (and the scene with the eels(!)) will do just fine. Then there is a wierd open bar that starts before the free admission but you can still grab an hour of free drinks and no cover it right. Now, normally I try to steer you all clear of just abusing an open bar and not buying drinks because its real sh!tty to the promoters, venue, and talent who all eat off of your love for alcohol but be warned that those vodka cocktails will probaby break double digits at this beautiful lounge. So I say lap it up and if your looking for a play to celebrate your birthday in a swanky lounge kind of way but still get your dance on and possibly pay $400 for a bottle of liquor. Then here's my recommendation. Oh how I get woo'd by Fellini films. BTW, this event goes on often so if its your thing then let us know and we'll pass along the list info:
*say your are there for the "film party" and ask for doorman "Avi"

Time: 7:00pm
Location: Barbés 376 9th St at Sixth Ave, Park Slope

Summary: By far, one of the coolest spots in my lovely new home (and one I seem to never go to) is Barbés. They carry the same vibe as a Tonic or a Nublu but with more of an air of the traditional NYC jazz club of lore. The only prerequisites are artisty, quality, and a personal voice. So I was stoked to find out that twice a month they run the Brooklyn Independent Cinema Series showcasing the "best in contemporary independent cinema." Check below for more info about tonight's films - Dance Party USA and Vacationland - and keep abreast of their future events on their website.

back roads of Maine on their bicycles hoping to reunite
with their older brother Jeff, but when things don't go

Get up and See the Howl.. this is your Final Chance

Time: 8:00pm
Location: Crash Mansion (119 Bowery at Spring)
Open Bar: Vodka & Bud, 8:00pm - 9:00pm
Cost: Free before 11 RSVP
Summary: Okay, I've been pushing these guys at your for a month now, and this is your last chance to catch The New York Howl at their residency. They are awesome. They play some serious, honest music which says a lot considering most bands passing through NYC these days care more about their eye liner and matching ties and how they are going to get their demo to Vice then about making new, original music. It'll be one hell of a punk rock funked up hoe-down tonight not to be missed. Boy's play around 10. After this they leave town again.
Listen to The New York Howl on MySpace.

Summary: Let's just be up front about it. Nothing says get drunk and make out like Finger on the Pulse at the Royal Oak. I mean, hipster make-out sweat is pretty much what they shine those wooden booths with and Finger on the Pulse drop high school prom classics that just beg you to take another shot of cuervo to get up the cojonese to talk to that cute girl in the corner with too much eyeshadow and a haircut that screams "my roommate goes to Aveda." But hey... its cold, its winter... sounds like a good time to me.

FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Saturday, January 25th
Time: 8:00pm
Location: Luna Lounge (361 Metropolitan Ave at Havermeyer, W'Burg)
Cost: Free
Summary: I love Cop Shoot Cop. They were the hardest, rawest, most NYC thing to come out of the No Wave movement combining bass drenched minimalism, boredoms low fi, and east coast hard core sensiblitity. There was serious energy there. While Umami is nothing like Cop Shoot Cop, their also use two basses to drive home low rumbling beats but with a much sloppier garage style. Maybe that's your steeze. If so, check them out tonight. If not, go listen to more Cop Shoot Cop!

Thrift On!
FreeNYC Event Flyer Date: Monday, January 28th
Time: 9:00pm - 1:00am
Location: Botanica Bar (47 East Houston St bet. Mott and Mulberry)
Cost: Free
I have been known to compulsively purchase very, very inexpensive items from flea markets/sidewalks/dollar stores. These unnecessary purchases are almost immediately stored in the recesses of my closet where they remain forever because they're too, well, too cheap for me to wear outside. You can only imagine my delight when I found out about tonight’s swap party at Botanica Bar. Not only will I be able to release my cheap gems to other bargain-addicts like myself, but I’ll be able to pick up enough of other people’s free shit to ensure that my closet is never, ever even remotely barren again. As if this isn’t amazing enough, the party is free and the alcohol will be flowing to beats provided by the lovely DJ Shakey. Thrift On!

HANNIBAL RISING marks the first time in the award-winning series that best selling author Thomas Harris ("Red Dragon," "Silence of the Lambs") writes the screenplay – reaching back to explore the origins of Lecter's rage, terror and savagery.
The story begins in Eastern Europe at the desperate end of World War II. For many it was no longer a conflict of nations but one of individual survival – at any cost. A young Hannibal watches from only steps away as his parents violently die, leaving his cherished young sister in his care. This horrific moment will soon pale in comparison to the atrocities he is forced to witness, changing him forever.
Alone and without any means of support, he is forced to live in a Soviet orphanage that once served as his family's beloved home. He flees to Paris to find his uncle has died but his beautiful and mysterious Japanese widow, Lady Murasaki (Gong Li) welcomes him. Even her kindness and love cannot soothe the nightmares and sorrows that plague him. Showing a cunning aptitude for science he is accepted into medical school, which serves to hone his skills and provide the tools to exact justice on the war criminals that haunt him day and night. This quest will ignite an insatiable lust within a serial killer who was not born, but made.
Gaspard Ulliel plays the fearsome Lecter, alongside Gong Li, Rhys Ifans and Dominic West. Peter Webber (GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING) directsC
