ITHUTENG
Ithuteng {never stop learning} is a gut-wrenching story about the perseverance of love in the face of great agony and strife. Sixteen-year-old, first-time director William Ebersol paints the vivid portrait of three students – Dineo (age 14), Lebo (22), and Victor (26)– among thousands attending a remarkable school started by Mama Jackey, the eccentric, selfless woman who runs the Ithuteng Trust in SOWETO, South Africa. After hearing the students’ first person stories, Ebersol –along with his older brother Charlie and their best friend Kip Kroeger– track their tumultuous journey to Johannesburg’s maximum-security prison, “Sun City,” and then on to a wilderness camp in the Kwazaulu-Natal hinterland for a week that changes their lives forever. Ithuteng {never stop learning} is a story of hope, love, and redemption through one woman’s vision and the power of education.

Joshua Johnson Opening at The Riviera
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Friday, December 1st
Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Location: The Riviera (103 Metropolitan, Williamburg)
Cost: Free
Summary: "Joshua Johnson's latest paintings depict images derived from themes of rural life. Born and raised in Michigan before moving to New York, he often observed and participated in the traditions of hunting and farming. These works focus on the ritualized aspects of those activities and represent them through a mediated filter. Produced with a hard-edged masking technique, many of these new paintings play between the boundaries of the expressionistic and delineated elements, often mirroring larger themes of conflict. The constructed, artificiality of the images eschews an idyllic naturalism and instead focuses on scenes which suggest violence and danger."

"Even in his lifetime, W.G. Sebald was compared to the likes of Kafka, Proust, and Borges. It has already been five years since his untimely death in an automobile accident, and it seems that Sebald's place in literature is even more indelible, permanent. Yet his work remains as unclassifiable and enigmatic as ever. Is it fiction or non-fiction? Why the use of haunting photographs? Does the pessimism of his writing offer any hope for this day and age?"

Nell Freudenberger was awarded the 2005 Whiting Writer’s Award. In
addition to the PEN/Faulkner Award for excellence in short fiction, she
has received the O. Henry Award for short fiction, and the Sue Kaufman
Prize for first fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Lucky Girls was named a best/notable book of 2003 by the New York Times
Book Review, San Francisco Chronicle, NPR’s “Fresh Air,” Chicago Tribune,
Seattle Times, and New York Newsday, and was a BookSense 76 pick. She
lives in New York City.
Dana Spiotta grew up mostly in California and moved to New York City in
1993. She was the managing editor (with Jodi Davis) of “The Quarterly” for
two years. Her first novel, Lightning Field, was a New York Times Notable
Book of the year and a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the West. Her second
novel, Eat the Document, has been nominated for the National Book Award.
The New York Times called it “stunning” and described it as “a book that
possesses the staccato ferocity of a Joan Didion essay and the
razzle-dazzle language and the historical resonance of a Don DeLillo
novel.” Spiotta lives in a small rural village in upstate New York with
her husband and daughter. When she isn’t writing, they run their small
country restaurant, The Rose & Kettle, on the ground floor of their home.

Summary: "This month's All England Club celebrates the arrival of the landmark British music television show "Later… with Jools Holland" to Concert.TV. The problem is that unfortunately, the NYC area does not get Concert.TV! Therefore, the AEC and Concert.TV are getting together to celebrate the show's arrival and to get some signatures to bring the show to our fair city. Obviously, this month's theme will be only UK bands that have played "Later…with Jools Holland." Luckily that includes basically every great UK band ever. So expect the latest and the greatest."

Leanne Shapton is an artist, illustrator, art director and writer born in Toronto and living in New York. She has contributed to The New York Times, Harper's Magazine, The Believer and The New Yorker, among other publications. Leanne is the "L" of J&L Books, a non-profit publishing company founded with photographer Jason Fulford, specializing in new photography, drawing and writing. Her first collection of drawings, titled "Toronto" was published in 2003. Her latest book, "Was She Pretty" was published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in November 2006.
Chris Leo, the mythical troubador flaneur who scored higher on the New York City tour guide exam than anyone else in the city -- neither Philip Lopate nor Speed Levitch can claim this -- is also responsible for the novels White Pigeons and We Pulse in Pink, the children's book Coomoococklemungmung illustrated by Buenos Aires' Francesca Massai, and over ten albums over the past two decades with bands like The Van Pelt, The Lapse, and currently, Vague Angels. Though hailing from the Leo New Jersey art dynasty (brother of Ted, Dan, and Amy), when not on tour he divides his time between Manhattan and Cupra Marittima, Italy.
Marcellus Hall's illustrations have graced the pages of The New Yorker, Time magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, and The New York Times. His first cover for The New Yorker was published in 2005. He has won recognition from American Illustration, The Society of Illustrators, and Communication Arts. Marcellus Hall created the comic strip Bill Dogbreath for alternative weekly newspapers in the 1990s. He contributed an 8-page illustrated narrative to the literary journal Open City #18 and has self-published booklets of writings and drawings including 2003’s "Legends of the Infinite City – Drawings of New York." As a songwriter and singer Marcellus Hall has fronted bands Railroad Jerk and White Hassle, releasing albums and touring Europe, Japan, and North America. An exhibit of his illustrations and sketches was held at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005 and his illustrated tour diaries can be found on the web. In 2004 he wrote and illustrated a weeklong journal for Slate.com.
MUSICIAN:
Jennifer O’ Connor’s third album, 'Over The Mountain…' has the immediacy of a debut. The past year saw many personal upheavals which informed it more than she expected. "It's been so tumultuous, I think that inevitably crept into my songs," she says. "I wouldn't say that I always write from experience, but I did a lot of it on this record." For her most emotional songs yet, she self-produced and got rid of reverb and extraneous sounds, giving them an urgency that her other records didn't always have. She explains, "There's a lot of space; we purposefully pared everything down to what was necessary for the song." Her self-released, self-titled debut came out in 2002. 'The Color And The Light' followed in May 2005.

Yacht Rock Christmas Party
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Wednesday, December 13th
Time: 9:30pm
Location: Union Hall (702 Union St. btw. 5th & 6th Ave, Park Slope)
Cost: Free
Summary: Enjoy an evening basking in the wonder that was Channel 101's classic show Yacht Rock as all this holiday screening marathon...
"What can be said about Yacht Rock that hasn't been said by various magazines, newspapers and disc jockeys across the country? J.D. Ryznar and Hunter Stair's saga detailing the unknown mythical origins of a previously obscure genre of music struck the audience like a lightning bolt on its first episode, much like fellow 101 breakout House of Cosbys. Unlike HoC, however, Yacht Rock was never sued by its iconic characters' real life counterparts. In fact, it is said that at one time or another, just about every musician lovingly portrayed in the series has witnessed and enjoyed it behind closed doors. Yacht Rock enjoyed success on levels and in ways previously unattained by 101 shows, its title becoming a household phrase at radio stations, a bin at your local record store and a category on iTunes. But beneath its pop cultural triumph was an artistic one that often went undescribed: Yacht Rock's stories were always clever and sometimes downright genius in their assembly, weaving trivia, common knowledge, exaggerations and fabrications into a rope strong enough to hold it at the #1 position for an unbelievable number of non-consecutive months, setting audience share records at Channel 101 that are unlikely to be broken any time soon and sweeping the 2005 Channy Awards. Ironically, Channel 101's most memorable show came to its end quietly and unremarkably, not unlike some of the careers it saluted with a smirk. Instead of choking on its vomit in a Paris bathtub or overdosing on a Hollywood sidewalk, Yacht Rock simply told us one last story about Steely Dan, then hoisted its sails and drifted away while a satisfied crowd waved goodbye from the docks, exactly one incredible year after its historical debut. Bye, Yacht Rock. We loved you."

Date: Thursday, December 14th
Time: 9:00pm
Location: Parkside Lounge (317 E. Houston St. btwn Aves B & C)
Cost: free
Summary: Every once in a while (okay, every day) I get a random email with vague info about a band or dj playing here or there. Tonight is such an occasion as the boys over at Picscape sent me an email that said "Celebrate the holidays with Santa's favorite band! The Parkside Lounge opens it's doors and celebrates their reason for the season with a Holiday Party that anyone over 21 years of age can enjoy. Come get your sleigh bells a ringing and your mistletoe mack moving." Thankfully, these boys are pretty good. They've got populate that space between funk, hip hop, and ska that was being explored in the late 90s by bands like Philly's Fathead or Boston's Chucklehead. They align more with the latter, as they forgo traditional hip hop beats for uptempo, funky horn lines are layered with rhymes. If you like what this sounds like then check them out tonight for the live version.

Summary: Following its theatrical release in Japan on Dec 9th, Nana2 premiers tonight in NYC along with special guest appearances from award-winning actress and singer, Mika Nakashima, and stunning beauty and upcoming star, Yui Ichikawa."
The film is about two girls of the same age and name, Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu. They randomly meet in a train and, following a string of coincidences having to do with the number seven (pronounced “nana” in Japanese), decide to live together in an apartment numbered 707. One is a cynical punk rocker with a demanding presence and the other is a cute, ignorant girl with an upper-middle class mindset. The two characters, despite having contrasting personalities, like and respect each other. After they met, Nana Osaki started calling Nana Komatsu “Hachi” ("Hachiko" is the name of a famous loyal dog in Japan. Coincidentally, "hachi" means "eight" which follows “nana”) Nana wants to make her debut to leave her ex-boyfriend, Ren, behind. Nana and Ren were in the same group once, but Ren was offered a chance to debut in Tokyo as a replacement member of Trapnest, a popular band. Realizing that following Ren would mean giving up her own dream to be a singer, she chose to cultivate her own band, Black Stones."
NANA2:
Nana's band, Black Stones, has their major label debut. Hachi is spun into a deep relationship with Takumi, the leader of Trapnest. This sequel is the last installment of the original "NANA" movies.

The (surprisingly enlightened) sex in this film is overwhelmed by a script chock full of low-budget surrealistic pretensions. This creative tact was originally designed to provide enough of a veneer of artistic merit to keep the censorship boards at bay. With the passage of time, it now can be seen as a piece in full dialog with the cinematic trends of the day, maybe a grimy Seventh Seal, a gutter-dwelling Satiricon or outsider artist Rosemary's Baby. Too kind? You be the judge. Shot in several (but not all) colors, and concerning fashion, dreams, death, discos, calliopes, spiral staircases, water, war, hell, and, of course, sex.
For this screening, Monkey Town has taken the liberty of inviting 50 audio artists to reinterpret the film (which is currently out of commercial release). The result experience is an era-bending megamix of illicit thrills.
Directed by John and Lem Amero, starring Uta Erickson, inserts by Harry Reems and Tina Russell.
New audio curated by Sam Zimmerman, Nick Hallett and Montgomery Knott. Additional film edits by Sam Zimmerman.

Fore Cast is a clarion call anticipating the looming environmental catastrophy. Fore Cast is an interactive Opera, opening at White Box on December 19, 2006, at six o'clock pm. Fore Cast will transform White Box's space into a waterlogged, apocalyptic swampland, soundscape, and videosurround. The opening and closing nights will feature live performances of an original opera score by The Redcoats Are Coming! with members of Antonious Block and Apples and Arrows.
Entering a water-filled and truncated landscape, viewers witness the land's predicted end-state, a reversion to its primeval condition and a topographical perspective of a sick new world. The marshy waterscape is the setting for the future of a civilization ensnared in an unceasing loop of WWIV, a war Albert Einstein foreshadowed as being fought with sticks and stones. With an unparalleled innate sense of intelligence, wit and craft, Mary Mattingly creates an installation explains the tragic outcomes of this hypothesized war in the not-so-distant future.
Multiple video projectors arranged in a semi-circle fill the walls of White Box and present a Fore Cast) that will loop for six days and one hour. (A new week, according to Mary Mattingly's proprietary uniform time scale, derived from ancient Assyrian and Babylonian astronomical methodology and translated to a system for future use.) The videos play continuously in White Box's waterlogged space. The main screen portrays WWIV, fought by six groups of combatants ---The World Economic Forum, The Council on Foreign Relations, Bechtel, Nestlé, The United Nations, and B.R.I.C.--- colluding to capture and assert political and economic control over a shattered and borderless world. The belligerents' leaders plot together in a corporate conference rooms, ultimately degenerating into intercontinental world-scale conflict fought with the weapons of Cain and Abel, the war unfolding in disastrous environments everywhere.
Fore Cast will run day and night for six days and one hour, from the morning of December 19, until 1:00 am on Christmas morning.

A Good Old Fashioned New Years Loft Party
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Sunday, December 31st
Time: 10:00pm - 8:00am
Location: Asterisk (258 Johnson Ave btw Bushwick and White)
Cost: $20 in advance, $25 with RSVP, $30 at the door
Open Bar: Beer all night
Summary: Re:Up Mag and New Release team up for a raging loft-party style new years. "The little live room up front starts off with The Epochs. Then Taylor McFerrin steps to the stage to blow everyone away with his one-man-band schtick that takes the Tom Jones and Squarepusher out of Jamie Lidell and replaces it with a tad of subtle twist of breaky 70s funk fusion. Then Zigmat takes the stage in all of their bullhorn-blowing glory. In the back room, where it’s dark and tiny, New Years gets a little harrier. Justin Carter and Probus rock everything from deep, dirty electro to funky, freaky reggae before Ursula 1000 steps up to the tables. All at once accessible and obscure, Ursula’s sets are full of music that could get the stodgiest record store employee and his grandma on the dance floor at the same time. The fFormula, Kamoni, and Alonzo from the Machine Punk crew take it into the late late night, rocking live PAs of all-be-damned bangers til the sun comes up. The Jah Breaker rounds out the lineup with the classics. What’s New Year’s without Biz Markie."
