DIW's Brokelyn Festiva

FreeNYC Event Flyer

Date: Wednesday, November 1st
Time: 8:00pm
Location: Syrup Room (100 Ingraham St btw Porter and Kickerbocker, Bushwick)
Cost: Free
Summary: "IW's put together a show featuring all the buzz bands that are in town for CMJ. Professor Murder makes high-tempo, ramshackle music that is part dance party and part Animal Collective-esque experimentalism. Annuals are a band that call on the playfulness of fellow North Carolinians Ben Folds Five but expand the vision beyond the latter's downfall of inescapable irony. Bound Stems (whiny like Bright Eyes, lo-fi like a lot of indie rock bands) and Vietnam (another throwback 70s rock unit) aren't my favorites, but people are still talking about them, and it's never bad to make your own opinions. The kickers are bands I've talked about before, but I've got no problem talking about them again. The Big Sleep keep nailing the good shows, and no matter how many times I have to hear their big swathes of space rock, it probably won't get old. Finally, Favourite Sons are playing. They're hands down my new favorite band. Their live performance and their record are transcendentally sincere, with vocals that sound like they're coming from a man who has beat back death and lived to tell about it and instrumentation from a band that sounds like it's been on the road together for ten years. Every time I see them, my sentiment is simply, "Wow"." [from New Release]

Then you make your way into Queens, over the Queensboro Bridge, where there must be ten thousand people cheering you into Manhattan, so close to where you'll finish that you can taste it. But now, with twenty miles at your back, your marathoning ass is headed into the South Bronx. If you're not running the race today, and you are planning on going out to cheer on the runners, go to mile 21. It's probably the most trying of all the miles in any marathon, and, in New York it's the place where there's the least amount of support. Get on the 4/5, get off at 138th and Grand Concourse, and scream your guts out." [via NewRelease]
