Date: Wednesday, August 2nd

Summary: disTHIS! - the "unique monthly film series showcases quality narrative, shorts, documentary and feature films with disability themes beyond the tragic/heroic trap moviegoers have come to expect" - presents a screening and discussion of comedian Greg Walloch's F*** The Disabled. "**k The Disabled is part documentary, part concert film and part traditional filmed comedy starring Greg Walloch. The film follows Walloch's show "White Disabled Talent," chronicling his performances, his life and his daily trips to and from his apartment in Harlem. Greg stands out in his neighborhood for several reasons, not only is he white, he is also (surprise!) disabled and walks with crutches." More after the jump.

F**k The Disabled is part documentary, part concert film and part traditional filmed comedy starring Greg Walloch. The film follows Walloch's show "White Disabled Talent," chronicling his performances, his life and his daily trips to and from his apartment in Harlem. Greg stands out in his neighborhood for several reasons, not only is he white, he is also (surprise!) disabled and walks with crutches. Most striking of all may be the black leather pants, silver shirt and satin jacket he wears to his performances. Add to this the fact much of Greg's material is based on being openly gay and you have the makings for some of the most timely, provocative, honest and witty material in comedy.
Greg Walloch's material examines society's often skewed perception of gay people and the disabled. The film's title comes from a true story in which a female friend of Greg's asks if he is gay because he's crippled and therefore women won't sleep with him. In his understated sarcasm, Greg admits this absurd statement is true and tells his insensitive and simple friend he has started a foundation called "F**k The Disabled," for women who want to have sex with disabled men to keep them from becoming gay.
Walloch is as much a storyteller as he is a comedian, and his stories are translated to the screen in a unique fashion. Produced and directed by Eli Kabillio, for Mad Dog Films, Inc., F**k The Disabled breaks the line between reality and performance, as the stories recounted in Greg's s how are also dramatized in a smooth transition between stage and screen.
Politically incorrect, politically challenging and politically untouchable, Walloch makes viewers question commonly accepted notions of "disability," as he pokes fun at religion, society, his friends and himself in F**k The Disabled.
With appearances by Stephen Baldwin, Anne Meara, Michael Musto and Deborah Yates as Greg's "friends."

Jens Lekman Instore
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Wednesday, August 2nd
Time: 8:00pm
Location: Soundfix (Bedford Ave & N. 11th St, Williamsburg)
Cost: Free
Summary: Jens Lekman swings by SoundFix today for a little instore performance. "So how to describe Jens Lekman's sound? Well, to put it bluntly, he wears his influences on his sleeve, and isn't the least bit ashamed of it, either. You can hear Magnetic Fields mastermind Stephen Merritt in Lekman's melancholy love songs, Morrissey in both his voice and his dryly humorous lyrics, Donovan and Nick Drake in his acoustic arrangements, Ron Sexsmith in his classy melodies, Sondre Lerche in his relaxed delivery, Belle & Sebastian in the innocuous moments of twee, chamber pop, and yes, even a touch of cheeseball Las Vegas style showmanship. Lekman is never overbearing, and he keeps things simple, and as a result, that heart-on-the-sleeve sincerity wins listeners over instantly." (Adrien Begrand on Pop Matters)

Time: 10:00pm
Location: Cake Shop (152 Ludlow btw. Stanton and Rivington)
Cost: $6
Summary: One of the hardest temptations we have here is to break out $5 event limit for really good shows. Well, Tonight's Professor Murder CDEP Release party is $6 but damn worth it. "Professor Murder's sound is as informed by hip-hop, bootleg mixtapes, downloaded mp3s and club nights, as it is by 70's and 80's post-punk. In early 2005 the band nixed the guitar and from their line-up which pushed them to rethink their music from the ground up. Their aim was to create a sound that distilled the many disparate soundtracks to their lives in New York City." Support comes from two of FreeNYC's favorites, Free Blood (members of !!!) and Caps 'n Jones on the tables. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Splice

Emulsion is the product of Nathan Koch's NES-lit eighties childhood, and the new sounds of electronic music over the past decade. Captivated by artists squeezing the last possible detail out of a decidedly low-fi palette, Nathan was obsessed with the 8-bit look and sound and its resulting digital artifacts. Emulsion's pretty, emotive melodies and 8-bit beats sit in between industrial and ambient.
Elijah B. Torn is an upstate lab experiment gone horribly wrong. He spends his idle time not in recline but rather honing his evil powers of noise manipulation with a unique blend of organic and electronic music which he has been creating for over fifteen years. This forms the groundwork for his unique live performance which is not to be missed. He has received airplay on numerous radio stations and programs, including KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic."
DJ Riley Sumala (Hi End Audio) returns to SPLICE for another session behind the decks, with a stimulating and carefully selected blend of new and classic electro, Italo, techno, and house.

“Ricky D’s in control! Of what? The hip-hop scene…” So drawled the mighty Slick Rick on his 1989 debut The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick. With his beret, his eye-patch and his mock-British accent, Slick Rick was like no one else in rap. Not only did he have beats from the Bomb Squad (the production team behind Public Enemy’s greatest hits), but he was a master storyteller and peerless rhymer, able to bring all sorts of surreal characters to life in his songs. Though various scrapes with the law prevented him from fully capitalizing on his initial success, Slick Rick is still one of the most distinctive voices in the realm of hip-hop.
One of the most famous DJ’s in rap history, Kool DJ Red Alert has been showcasing new hip-hop for over 20 years—in dance clubs, on mix-tapes, and perhaps most importantly on legendary radio shows for KISS-FM, Hot 97 and Power105.1. Known for playing only the music he likes, no matter how obscure, Red Alert helped launch of the careers of the Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah, joined KRS-One’s Boogie Down Productions, and earned a place in the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame.

Rebound Music Series with Metro Area
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Saturday, August 12th
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Water Taxi Beach, LIC (Click for Directions)
Cost: Free
Summary: The Rebound party series continues tonight at the Water Taxi Beach, an outdoor spot in LIC complete with food, beers, and imported Jersey sand. Tonight's line-up features a special DJ set from NYC producers Metro Area. Bio after the jump.
The brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, Metro Area was born out of the pair's somewhat dichotomous love for both the old moods of R&B, disco and boogie and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative house and techno. Metro Area brings back the soulful experimentation of the early club classics, mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously, the mood and minimalism of more recent dance music forms creep into the mix: Detroit's cold futurism, Chicago's abstract track-modes, and the warmth of New York and New Jersey's deep house.
After over a year of late-night sessions in New Jersey and Manhattan, Metro Area burst onto the scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut 12" featuring the cult smash "Atmosphrique." With an angular bassline underpinned by a grungy 4/4 disco beat and the most distinctive claps this side of 1977, "Atmosphrique" sounds futuristic and retro at the same time, and spawned myriad heated debates concerning the record's production date. Most of all, it left both DJs and dancers wanting more.
However, the runaway success of Metro Area's MA 4 EP (released November 2001) surpassed all expectation, not least the duo's own. The feature track "Miura", a sinister, spare and pulsating antidote to the melancholic sweetness of their previous release, captured the imagination of a broad cross-section of DJs, dancers and listeners from almost every genre. Ubiquitously charted and still played with reverence today, "Miura" fueled sales of over 16,000 copies of the EP to date. It should be noted here that in keeping with Metro Area's low-profile tradition, not a single promo was mailed out to stimulate sales: the frenzy was created purely by word-of-mouth.
Exactly a year after Metro Area 4, Metro Area's self-titled debut album finally emerged. Comprised of the strongest tracks from their 12" series plus 4 new tracks, the CD/LP elicited superlative responses from The New York Times to The Onion, from Web-logs to The Wire. Metro Area won a place among Rolling Stone's "Top 50 Albums of the 2002," a rock-and rap-dominated area most of today's dance music falls short of. Other accolades included BBC/Radio 1's "Dance Album of the Year" and the "Best New Artist" prize at the 2003 DanceStar/American Dance Awards.
June 2004's MA5 and June 2005's MA6 EPs are already being touted as an extension of their sparkling tradition of redefining, refining and re-shaping their influences. The duo's remix of Hugh Masekela's "Mama" for Verve Remixed 2 was hailed as an elegant and innovative treatment of a classic recording, proving that Metro Area is more of an ethic than a production style and prompting Verve to release it and the original as its own 12" single.
Besides their work in the studio, Metro Area have toured extensively, both together as a live PA and DJ team and separately as DJs, playing their distinct and individualistic style to crowds from Norway to South Africa. Currently staying busy with continued touring, solo remixes from Morgan and Darshan, new studios in Brooklyn, solo and side projects and the imminent release of a new Metro Area album, the music world can rest assured that Metro Area will continue to rock theories of time and space.

Duncan Sheik & Dennis Lehane - Upstairs at the Square
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Wednesday, August 16th
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Barnes & Nobles USQ (33 E 17th St)
Cost: Free
Summary: B&N continues their "Upstairs at the Square" series tonight with a reading by author
Read More
Bestselling author Dennis Lehane has written seven novels: A Drink Before the War; Darkness, Take My Hand; Sacred; Gone, Baby, Gone; Prayers for Rain; Mystic River and Shutter Island. Mystic River was a finalist for the PEN/Winship Award, won both the Anthony Award and the Barry Award for Best Novel, and the Massachusetts Book Award in Fiction. Clint Eastwood directed the film adaptation of Mystic River, which won two Oscars, for Best Actor (Sean Penn) and Best Supporting Actor (Tim Robbins). Before becoming a full-time writer, Mr. Lehane worked as a counselor with mentally handicapped and abused children, waited tables, parked cars, drove limos, worked in bookstores, and loaded tractor-trailers. His one regret is that no one ever gave him a chance to tend bar.
Though many know him for his gold records, Grammy nomination and yearlong ride on the pop charts with “Barely Breathing," Duncan Sheik's mainstream success may belie the depth of his work. Sheik has scored for film and for the stage (most recently, Spring Awakening, which The New York Times praised as “bold, inviting and funny”), produced ambitious records for himself and his peers, and captured audiences around the world. Sheik's new record, White Limousine, represents the latest turn from an artist who has always avoided predictability, despite commercial triumphs and critical acclaim. The album fuses the epic balladry and tuneful love songs for which Sheik is known with visceral comments on war, media and consumer culture.
Katherine Lanpher is an award-winning print and broadcast journalist. Springboard Press will publish her first book, Leap Days: Chronicle of a Midlife Move, this October.

Martha Graham, the American icon who shaped the course of modern dance, founded the company in 1926 and went on to create a repertory of over 180 works with collaborators that included Isamu Noguchi and Aaron Copeland. The Martha Graham Dance Company has received acclaim from audiences worldwide and produced some of modern dance's most illustrious performers and choreographers." "Using discarded wood collected throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, Bryan and Mason have created a backdrop for their work that straysfrom the accepted white walls found in the majority of galleries.
'The whole idea was to get away from the sterile white box we've been so accustomed to accept as the norm when viewing art... we wanted to create an all-encompassing installation that helps tie all the individual pieces together. We figured the best way to do this would be to challenge people's expectations of what a gallery should look like.'"

EXCEPTER
"Excepter is a New York vocal and freestyle electronics band
synthesizing live group performance with intuitive sequencing
technology. Formed in 2002 by John Fell Ryan and Dan Hougland and
featuring Nathan Corbin and Jon Nicholson, Excepter is a constantly
changing and self-produced social experiment in the recording arts and
public address system engagement."
FERN KNIGHT
"Fern Knight from Philadelphia, PA is an ensemble with an
ever-changing lineup, fronted by guitarist / cellist and singer Margaret Wienk, who creates delicate, organic acoustic songs
orchestrated by layers of accordion / harmonium / electronics drones,
psych-tinged strings, canonic vocals, harp, bells and percussion and
singing saw."
BLUES CONTROL
"Before becoming a homeopathic dinosaur, Watersports formed the
blues-rock duo Blues Control, which experienced reasonable success in
the Slavic states in the later '60s and early '70s. Blues Control was
molded very much on the model of Tadeusz Nalepa's Breakout, adding
psych, scum rock, and new jack swing elements to a blues-rock base,
and featuring a virtuosic pianist / guitarist. Like Yugoslavia's
similarly minded Yu Grupa, Blues Control were prone to occasional
blues-rock bombast, exhibiting a heavier touch than most Eastern
European blues boom outfits."

Now, I'm not much on music software (FYI, KORE is "the world’s first Universal Sound Platform") but if you are into that thing then there are lectures, demos, and Q&A sessions all day (full details here). At night they convert the space into a 2 floor DJ/producer after party that is pretty much insane. Notables include Hank Shocklee (Public Enemy), edIT (Planet Mu), Dave Last (the Agriculture), and more. Full line-up below.

Splice
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Sunday, August 20th
Time: 9:00pm
Location: Solas (323 East 9th Street bet. 2nd and 3rd)
Cost: Free
Summary: NYC's live electronic underground rears it head at the bi-weekly Splice party. This week features live performances by Vusac, BlipVert, Elephant Priests & That's as well as a DJ set by Maxx Klaxon. Bios after the jump.
VUSAC is the solo project of Isaac Peachin, a founding member of the electro-rock combo Lution. In this incarnation, he walks the tightrope of live breakbeat-fueled laptop improv. Vusac's real-time creations are spontaneous montages of voices, polyrhythms, and electrophonic/orchestral harmonies. You'll find the melody in the beats: that's a promise.
BLIPVERT, aka Will Redmond, fuses noise, fractured dancefloor rhythms, robotic chants, alien soundscapes, and sometimes a little free-jazz saxophone into unique sonic mayhem. BlipVert's debut CD, 'Triple Acid Foot,' has been called 'a clever masterpiece (smother.net)' and 'twisted, warped drum machines squished through the sonic blender (NYC Downtown Music Gallery).' Will has performed as BlipVert all over the East Coast, Europe, and Scandinavia.
ELEPHANT PRIESTS is Isaac's and Will's live electronic double act. The Elephant Priests are travelling through the jungle of minimal techno, dubby world and psychedelic sponge cake. Take a safari with them on either coastline (Will in Oakland, Isaac in Brooklyn) at a tripped out venue soon, and keep an eye out for their forthcoming EP on the Trixy label.
THAT'S... the situation. That's... the case of an Italo-disco kid from Rome who lives in Berlin and learns to appreciate electronic rock. That's... Italectro galore. That's... the deejay, too. Have a listen on www.italectro.de. That's... terrific. Italian synth virtuosismo dal vivo. That's... live! Don't wait until he's a megastar. Say you were there at his first NY gig. That's... the shit.

Summary: Sometimes you just need a little good-old, southern-fried rock and roll. Led by guitar-legend Warren Haynes (who also claims membership with such bands as The Allman Bros, Phil Lesh & Friends, and The Dead), Gov't Mule combine big riffs, big grooves, and an even bigger sound. Today they pack into Virgin Mega for the most intimate performance you will probably ever see them play.

Oh the Weight of It All
FreeNYC Event Flyer
Date: Saturday, August 25th & 26th
Time: Sundown
Location: The Rooftop of 210 Cook Street, Bushwick
Cost: Free
Summary: In Oh the Weight of It All, artists Ian Epps, Darrin Martin, Shana Moulton, Blithe, Riley, Eva Teppe, and DJ Walsh present a series of site-specific looping audio and video works. "Centered on the theme 'gravity,' the works collectively comment on the physical and psychological impact this invisible force has on human navigation and perception." More info after the jump.
Sound artist Ian Epps premieres his new sound sculpture, Untitled in which balloon-like ‘Ashrams’ float suspended in the air. Headphones link the listener to the object broadcasting Epps’s new original compositions. The piece is both meditative and metaphorical evoking an illustrative study of an individual’s personal sanctuary, dream-like states of emotional release, and the conflict of being firmly planted to the ground.
Darrin Martin’s new work was initially inspired by a book-on-tape version of James Gleick’s Isaac Newton bought at a truck stop. His video Sensorial Principia, “celebrates the specialization of knowledge through the rubbing of an iconic pinnacle of scientific achievement against the artistic ambivalence of the human body.” Martin’s work questions the access points, as well as the goals of the producers and distributors of human knowledge.
Shana Moulton’s video Inside the Mountain Where Everything is Upside-Down presents an interior space that resembles a familiar domestic setting but exhibits physical properties that defy the laws of nature. Household rituals meant to reduce stress trigger a disruption in the space-time continuum, causing objects in the room to have supernatural properties. The bewildered protagonist unsuccessfully attempts to restore natural order to the space until she accepts its irrational logic.
Blithe Riley’s site-specific video projection uses looping repetition to highlight the labor of repetitive action. In Wat(h)er Fall, a performer moves through an old twenty-foot metal frame defunct water tower base, in an endless and goalless journey. The journey is broken into time frames, mirrored by the structural frames that dissect the physical object.
In Half Asleep, Eva Teppe works with various modes of extremely decelerated motion. By manipulating footage of “base-jumpers” performing their skydives, the artist dispels all sense of the danger posed by such reckless leaps. The “base-jumper” is made to look like a diver gliding through a fluid biotope, giving the impression of a sleepwalker, This mood is further heightened by the soundtrack composed by Finnish musician Mika Vainio.
In JD Walsh's Weekend, leisurely city dwellers engage in various weekend activities. The electronically removed background emphasizes and exaggerates the mundane tasks that we know as "free time". Actions become unhinged from their environments, gestures freed from governing laws of physics and society. For Oh, the Weight of it All Walsh presents "Weekend (reprise)", a two-channel version, in which these gestures are presented alongside those found in interior spaces, further complicating role of the body in and out of doors.

With Mafiosos, an urban samauri, a french ice-cream man, passenger pigeons, and a soundtrack from the RZA, this one is not to be missed.
