Date: Saturday, July 1st
Time: 3:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: P.S.1 MoMA (22-25 Jackson Ave at the intersection of 46th Ave in LIC)
Cost: $10
Summary: If you lived here prior to 2004 hopefully you remember and got to spend your Sunday afternoons at Vinyl (ok fine, Arc) for Body And Soul. It was filled with a fair amount of glittery shirtless boys, but also featured some of the best house music in this city and the best sweaty, out of control dancing around. So when we heard that P.S.1 was kicking off their summer Warm Up season this year with the 10 Year Body And Soul Reunion, FreeNYC was super excited! Check rest of the entry for the details...
The DJs for the day are Danny Krivit, François K. and Joe Claussell! A couple things to keep in mind here, the first being that admission is in fact $10, but we think it's highly worth it! Now if you have ever been to P.S.1 you know the crowd is crazy and the line to get in usually goes 'round the block so we suggest you pre-order your tickets here. Also, remember that that the summer Warm Up series at P.S.1 goes every Saturday all summer long and takes place outside in their court yard, so it will be hot and sweaty, remember to bring sunblock and water! This party is going to go off!

Summary: Ahh Summerstage how I love you! You love to bring me great, free, outdoor music, and today is no exception. Kiscking it off will be Brooklyn's own, Antibalas, with African polyrhythm and world music funk. To be followed by Balkan Beat Box, the renowned "circus-like live show, which typically features gypsy costumes...the spectacle is a delirious blend of Israeli and Egyptian dance rhythms, klezmer and Balkan marching band music, and a punkish disregard for stylistic boundaries." And topping it off you got the breezy strut of Jamaican ska to the sophisticated cadences of Cuban son and mambo of Ska Cubano.

DJ CX Kidtronik (Sound-ink Records, NYC)
Getting muddy in the early south, CX was a prophet to that dirty and bassy booty noise that the continent of hotlanta was primed to erupt. Working with the K.I.N. alongside Saul Williams and the Further 3 M.C.s, he spanned the first storming of crunk and rode the fallout into the grime and soot of plugged-inBrooklyn. Here he has concocted a crooklyn take on crunk, producing the bootleg fantasyies "Electric Boogie Laser Battle Scratch Party Death Mix" and "ILLER", as well as working the decks with Anti-Pop Consortium and then Airborn Audio. When all the dust on the dirty south has settled, CX is getting onefor the road. Moving like a frantic planet, he will set two records into wobbly, dynamic tandem. CX is one of the inheritors of the maps of Sun Ra, the paths of Parliament, and heir to the NY subway system rattle and shake. He is a culprit who must be caught.
Ysle (Ysle.net, NYC)
Ysle is electronic music from Todd Krupa and Mathew Schmitz. An aural compound of fresh styles, they traverse the worlds of blip hop, dub, modern composition, ambient, and breakcore to arrive at their locus in today's music. With a performance based approach, centered around self-designed digital instruments and dynamic real time composition, their tracks constantly mutate in communication with audience and environment.

This line showed up in my email box a few weeks ago and I could not think of a more enticing way to get me to see They Say These Mountains Grow, the new photo exhibit on view at Riviera. In October 2005, Greg Wilson approached us about an exhibition of his
photographs. He was going to California to document youth culture in a
small town in the Mojave Desert. A day after he was scheduled to
return to New York, we found a note at the gallery. It read "I was
kidnapped for 5 days. Shot 39 rolls of film. Call me, Greg"
He recounted his story stream of conscience style into a microphone a
few days later. The transcript is a tense and terrifying account of
hitching a ride with the wrong people. He had two cameras with him
and, innocently enough, asked if they wouldn't mind if he took some
pictures.
Together, the story and the photographs are a frightening and
fascinating document of a simple trip gone wrong, from which Greg
Wilson was lucky to escape.
from the transcript:
"Jack was a master thief. He paid for a candy bar and we walked out.
The pockets in those big shorts of his were deeper that I thought, I
was shocked to see how many things he pulled from them. Loads of
candy, a 1 liter bottle of soda, and an entire outfit for Christy. It
didn't fit her properly, she threw a fit and made Jack go back into
the store and steal her another one. He was back in less than 10
minutes with a pair of white stretch pants, a tacky pink blouse and a
pair of thong underwear."

Tomorrow: Post-Dependence Day - Next Level Hip Hop!
As I am sitting down to write the weekend email, I wanted to take a second to talk about our party tomorrow beyond the usual big-up hype that we usually spill into 100 words or less. Over here at FreeNYC, we're pretty much always on the hunt for new music. It's probably because I go through about 10 hours of music a day in the studio. Some day I burn and churn through sh!t pretty quickly (more on that next week). So about 2 months ago, Zack Shadetek approached me with the idea for this "Post-Depenence Day" show. Zack's been on the front of all things breakbeat in NYC for a while now as part of Team Shadetek and resident at the old Bangers and Mash monthly party (really, the first party to break grime in the city a few years back). I was lost at first...
...not really familiar with the artists (which made me excited) and not sure if people would "get it" (which made me nervous). A few hours of beat digging, mySpacing, and Googling later (and one killer Bigg Jus track on myspace) and I was sold. This really was a group of artists who were picking up where avant hip hop left off (or took a left hand turn into miami bass and baltimore club anthems). The lyrics were on point, political, concious. The beats were hard hitting, spacey, and dancable all at the same time.
FreeNYC Events have - for the most part - always been about filling a gap in nightlife. Whether it was a bubbling sound movement not being represented, a vibe from our past that we missed, or just the lack of a real good party at a real good price, I've always tried to come at things with a purpose. Saturday our purpose is to usher in the next wave of hip-hop artists and prove to all the haters that hip hop is not dead, it just turned left while you were looking right. Big thanks to all the artists that are making this event possible, the crew over at Galapagos for putting up with my a$$ once again and everyone who helped promote the event. Oh, and as a thank you to everyone who read this huge rant, we're going to give away free comps to the first 10 people who email us. For the rest of you, its $5 buck but damn worth it! Full info here.

The music is everything from electro to classic rock but that is incidental to rest of the insanity. Tonight's special birthday back features go-go dancers and an open bar from 11-12.

"Swap goods (You know, the stuff that is too good to throw away but you shouldn’t keep), share skills, give presents, eat food, hang out, dance, sing and have fun—all for free!
Nothing will be for sale!
There will be Fun! Music! and Food!
The Really Free Market is an open-air bazaar and celebration, where we discard capitalist notions of interaction and have fun trying new models of exchange.
This will only be as great as you make it. We will provide the framework; you supply the material. Bringing free stuff and planning skill-shares are great ways to get involved.
If you have a skill to share, stuff to give away, a crazy art thing to do, music to play, an idea for entertainment or a topic to discuss; email us soon and let us know what you are planning! Otherwise, plan on bringing your own table or blanket and coming and going as you please, and if you want contact us, just e-mail: inourhearts@gmail.com
Show up to St. Mark's Church with something to share, and let this be another step in our movement towards a really, really free world. Bring friends and gifts, leave your wallet at home."

Gary Shteyngart -- author of Absurdistan, praised by The New York Times Book Review as 'so immodestly vigorous, so burstingly sure of its barbaric excellence, that simply by breathing, sweating and
standing upright it exalts itself' -- was born in Leningrad in 1972 and came to the United States seven years later. His debut novel, The Russian Debutante's Handbook, won the Stephen Crane Award for First
Fiction and the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction. The novel was also named a New York Times Notable Book, a best book of the year by The Washington Post and Entertainment Weekly, and one of the best debuts of the year by The Guardian. Absurdistan has been translated into ten languages. Shteyngart's fiction and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, GQ, Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, and many other publications.
Still in his early twenties, Sondre Lerche has already released two critically acclaimed albums, and been called 'one of the most talented new names in contemporary pop' by The Los Angeles Times. He has appeared on the Conan O'Brien and Carson Daly shows, toured with Elvis Costello, Jason Mraz, Nada Surf, Liz Phair and Ed Harcourt. His new album, Duper Sessions, is a fresh, back-to-basics collection of songs that showcases a more intimate side of this gifted singer-songwriter. Inspired by Chet Baker, Caetano Veloso and even David Lynch, Duper Sessions transports the listener into a different time and place, filled with melody and romanticism. The album is Sondre Lerche's tribute to the music he loves.
Katherine Lanpher is an award-winning print and broadcast journalist. Springboard Press will publish her first book, Leap Days: Chronicle of a Midlife Move, this October.

Date: Friday, July 21st
Time: 7:30pm
Location: Prospect Park Bandshell (directions)
Cost: Free ($3 Suggested)
Summary: Celebrate Brooklyn has quickly won out as my favorite summertime festival. It probably has to do in part with the eased up crowds, shorter beer lines, and the fact that the shows are in the evening when the city drops below 80º rather then the weekend Summerstage performances which happen right as the Mercury cracks 95º. Tonight is a more laid back performance as the Alloy Orchestra perform a live score to the Hitchcock Classic Blackmail. Morely, a "jazz minded pop chanteuse, soul sister, cosmopolitan home girl from Jamaica Queens," opens the show

ABC No Rio Building Title Party

Summary: After years of negotiations, ABC No Rio - the 26 year old LES center for art and activism - has finally obtained the title to their building. This is a huge win in times when real estate is being bought up from under our feet and NYC living is becoming unaffordable to anyone making less then $200K a year. ABC No Rio is the first placed that I silkscreened a shirt as well as the first place that I developed a roll of film in NYC. "Envisioned for the site is a multi-use community arts center with darkroom, silk-screen printing facility, small press resource center, computer center, expanded space for art, music, performance, educational and community activities, and meeting and office space." The Black Factory
Date: Saturday, July 22nd
Time: 10:00am - 6:00pm
Location: USQ Farmer's Market (14th St & Broadway)
Cost: Free
Summary: Bless Flavorpill... they still get some of the coolest submissions out there... "William Pope.L's Black Factory, an interactive performance installation and social experiment on wheels, rolls into Union Square this Saturday. Pope.L's performances, which have ranged from a 22-mile, hands-and-knees crawl across the city in a superman outfit to the literal consumption of stacks of the Wall Street Journal, address pervasive concepts of race. Black Factory invites people to provide the artist and his team of factory workers with objects that represent "blackness," initiating a series of skits that question the process of social and ideological transformation. In the factory's gift shop, "twice-sold" objects — goods re-labeled and signed by the artist — sell for $250 and up, with all proceeds going to local charity. (AM via Flavorpill)

Dancing is Not a Crime
Date: Saturday, July 22nd
Time: 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Location: (79th St and 5th Ave)
Cost: Free
Summary: At this point we've all seen the woes of the insane Cabarate Laws. The irony of one of the largest cities in the world making it illegal to dance has left venues padlocked, fined, or event forced to close their doors (currently, only 244 venues in NYC are legal places to dance). Join Metropolis in Motion this afternoon as they take to the streets with "an open-air dance and participatory movement event to bring attention to the antiquated & restrictive NYC cabaret laws" Mayor Bloombergs house. Full info below.
Why we're doing this:
In 1926, New York City sought to limit interaction among the races and control "public lewdness" by clamping down on the jazz scenes found in Harlem and West 52nd Street (and later in the bohemian Greenwich Village). To this end, the City established Cabaret Laws that limited dancing to specially licensed public spaces serving food or drink where three or more persons congregated, and stipulated that only musicians "of good character" could be licensed to play. Over the years, musicians won the right to forgo licensing, but laws regulating dancing remain on the books. As part of his "Quality of Life" campaign, Mayor Rudolph Guiliani used the laws to crack down on bars and clubs without a license that allowed people to dance. Venues were fined, or worse, padlocked and closed forever. The laws continue to be enforced under Mayor Bloomberg, while his Administration gives lip service to repeal or reform. According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, there are currently only 244 actively legal places to dance in New York City, including strip joints and clubs.
Why are these laws still on the books? Some people say it's to enforce a vague notion of the "quality of life." Other people know it's to keep property values high, club owners with cabaret licenses rich, and ordinary people, otherwise known as the citizens of New York, "in line." And we don't mean a kick line.
DANCE with us on July 22nd from 2pm to 4pm infront of the Mayor's house!* This is an open-air event to call attention to the Cabaret Laws which restrict dancing in NYC... Here we are in a city of an estimated 15 million people,** and there are only 244 currently legal places dance... And that number includes "adult dancing" venues... Its time to dance in the streets and remind our city that DANCING IS NOT A CRIME!
Dress Up, Bring Friends, Bring Music, Bring your Congas & Guitar, your Tapshoes and Flamenco dress, Tamborine, Voice, Accordian & your joyful exuberant spirit!

Summary: The Rebound party series continues tonight at the Water Taxi Beach, an outdoor spot in LIC complete with food, beers, and imported Jersey sand. Tonight's line-up features DJ sets from Alex from Tokyo and Ursula 1000 as well residents $mall ¢hange and Justin Carter. Guest write-up by Justin Carter after the jump.

Alex from Tokyo is not necessarily from Tokyo. He does spend a lot of time there, but the truth is he's French, and he posts up for at least half of the year in New York City. His production and DJing reflect such disparate homelands: His style, rooted in house, swivels from Italo-disco and real-deal electro to raw Detroit techno. Ursula 1000 is from the States. He lives here, too. But even though he doesn't have beds in three ports doesn't mean his music isn't otherworldly. In fact, Ursula 1000 is hands down one of the best live DJs I've ever heard. His sets are all at once accessible and obscure, full of music that could get the stodgiest record store employee and his grandma on the dance floor at the same time. $mall ¢hange and Justin Carter, partner DJs in a past life, start off the evening with sounds from dancehall to punk funk.

The band’s energetic live shows combine Mexican folk music with rock, rap, ska, salsa and metal for a rhythmically limber world beat sound... Konono N°1 plays raucous Congolese Bazombo trance music on likembé, or thumb piano, supplemented by traditional percussion instruments. What really sets Konono N°1 apart is its home-made sound system, built from old car parts, megaphones and discarded amps... Senegalese rap trio Daara J help bring African music full circle, being equally inspired by Jamaican reggae, Cuban funk, the traditional sounds of their native land, and the latest developments in American hip-hop."

The cause:
Daniel McGowan is an environmental and social justice activist, unjustly arrested and charged in federal court on multiple counts of arson, property destruction, and conspiracy, relating to two incidents that occurred in Oregon in 2001. Daniel has asserted his innocence by pleading not guilty to all charges. He is facing a minimum of life in prison if convicted.
Daniel is from New York, and has been an active member of the community, working on diverse projects such as military counter-recruitment, demonstrations against the Republican National Convention, Really Really Free Markets, and supporting political prisoners such as Jeff "Free" Luers and others. Daniel was a graduate student earning a Master's degree in acupuncture and was working at WomensLaw.org, a nonprofit group that helps women in domestic abuse situations navigate the legal system, which is where he was arrested by federal marshals on December 7, 2005.
Daniel had originally been indicted separately, but his arrest comes in the context of a well-coordinated, multi-state sweep of numerous activists by the federal government, who has charged the individuals with practically every earth and animal liberation case left unsolved in the Northwest. Many of the charges, including Daniel's, are for cases whose statute of limitations were about to expire.
