In a city where the best was to get around is your own two feet, it still astounds me how much this city still caters to cars and not pedestrians. In the new exhibit Livable Streets: A New Vision For New York opening today such concepts will be explored. "Roads and parking lots cover more than half of NYC's open space. This exhibition explores the relationship between automobiles and quality of life and raises the notion that streets are reclaimable as vital public spaces." The show will run through March 29th, and be sure to check the extended entry for info on the dicussions and lectures they will be hosting.

Something I really like writing about, but rarely get to, are free films. Fix in Williamsburg is now doing a weekly film night. On the big screen (ok fine, it's probably actually not quite so big) tonight and every Wednesday are "a wide variety of films, shorts, tv shows, obscure bits of film, trailers, features, commercials, animation, home movies (you name it) all projected in 16, 8 and super8mm!"

It's a a drug laden adventure that centers on a party in a New York loft where a young man is trying to win back his ex-girlfriend." Note, last time we tried to go to this there was a space so packed that no only could you not get into the screening but you could not get to the bar. My recommendation is that if you are going to this then get there early.

The Pure Fire weekly - home of the finest local crunkgrimebreakcorehiphopdancehall rhymes takes it up a notch tonight with Atlanta-bred Brooklyn transplant DJ Raedawn aka Crunc Tesla and his unique blend of fractured-techno rap. What exactly does that sound like? well, you can get a peak here but you'll have to roll through to find out what it is really all about. Although Raedawn is playing shows all week, this should be the sickest night of the lot. As always, residents Critereon, Reaganomics, and Peter Gunn keep the tables on lock down all night.

Well kids today is a very special day... Groundhog Day. Today is the day that pudgy, woodland creature pops its head out of a hole in the ground and lets me know whether I will get to snowboard for another six weeks or not. And well, given the fact that it was 60 degrees on Monday, the future of my east coast riding is looking grim.
Besides the whole rodent thing, today is also your founder-publisher-writer-designer-extraordinaire Chris' Birthday. That's right kids, 27 years ago today, Chris' Momma gave birth to this crazy middle child that we have all come to know and love. So raise your glasses (stop drinking on the job, gawd what lushes!) and wish Chris a Happy Birthday!
"New Beach Paintings" is that latest solo show from photorealistic painter Hilo Chen. "This body of work, which is arguably his best, is reminiscent of iconic Pop images such as the Girl with Ball painting created by Roy Lichtenstein in 1961. Chen's use of color is especially suggestive of this era as seen in Beach 146 in which a topless sunbather lounges on a vibrant arrangement of colorful beach towels. The swimsuit top prominently displayed in Beach 150 authenticates the Pop trend with its elaborate, geometric patterns."

The first day of the New Year falls on January 29, 2006, the Year of the Dog, one of the twelve signs in the Chinese Zodiac. Those born in 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, or 2006 are under this sign and are known for their loyalty, honesty and compassion. Dogs can also be selfish, stubborn and eccentric. They care little for wealth, yet somehow always seem to have money. For dogs in 2006, recent setbacks or obstacles can be overcome and they can look forward to an outstanding year, either personally or professionally. Famous Dogs include Winston Churchill, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Mother Theresa and Jennifer Lopez.
The parade will kick off with a ceremony at Canal and Mott Streets, travel East to Bowery, South on Bowery, up East Broadway, then to Division and back to Bowery, up Bowery to Grand, then back down Mott.
"Leonard Peltier is a citizen of the Anishinabe and Dakota/Lakota Nations who has been unjustly imprisoned since 1976, even though government attorneys and courts acknowledge that the government withheld evidence, fabricated evidence, and coerced witnesses to fraudulently convict him. Leonard is recognized worldwide as a political prisoner and a symbol of resistance against the abuse and repression of indigenous people. To many Indigenous Peoples, Leonard Peltier is a symbol of the long history of abuse and repression they have endured. This year marks the 30th year of Leonard’s imprisonment. Despite the fact that the government has admitted that the trial was a fraud, Leonard is still behind bars because the U.S. doesn’t want this vocal defender of indigenous rights to be free. A Hearing has been scheduled for February 13, 2006 to correct the illegal sentencing that occurred in Leonard Peltier's case. The basis for this motion is that the United States District Court lacked subject matter jurisdiction under the statutes upon which Mr. Peltier was convicted and sentenced."

"Over the past ten years, Internet-based art has transformed, moving away from a medium defined by an intimate, international avant-garde towards a more loose and dispersed range of conceptual and formal practices. This development has, in large part, to do with the expanded and diversified terrain of the Web itself. What was previously a thin network of interlinked pages, construction signs, and awkward animated gifs is now a sprawling area, home to some of the best new business models, largest communities, and billions of users both amateur and expert---a second stage some call the "Web 2.0." Now, artists working on or drawing source material from the Internet face not only a faster, richer, more complicated landscape, but also one whose parameters for art practice are continually being pushed out by artists and non-artists alike.
Panelists will touch upon current themes and trends including performance, contagion, sampling, blogging, video and animation, and the ongoing challenges of translating Internet-based art into gallery and museum spaces."

The ongoing debate over Iraqi withdrawl continues tonight as General William E. Odom, Yale professor and Senior Fellow at the Hudson Instititute, takes on Peter Brookes, Senior Fellow for National Security Affairs at the Heritage Foundation, in a lively debate. "As the third anniversary of the Iraq invasion approaches, support for the War – and the President's handling of it – has fallen precipitously. The President has partially reversed the decline by admitting execution "mistakes," but a majority of the public believes the war itself was a mistake. However, the public is not convinced that immediate withdrawal is the answer and the Iraqi constitution and elections have given many hope that Iraq's fragile democracy will flourish if given sufficient aid and stability. How will the insurgents and Iraqi people react to a withdrawal? How much more strain can our military and our treasury handle? What do we owe the Iraqi people?" Reception will follow.

Equipped with an array of samplers, sequencers and vintage synthesizers, San Francisco wunderkinds Broker/Dealer make catchy minimal electronic music equally suited for the den or the dancefloor. Simultaneously channeling the aquatic dub of Berlin's Chain Reaction label and the genre-defining minimal techno of the Kompakt imprint, on their debut full-length, "Initial Public Offering," B/D recalls German electronic artists like Mike Ink, not to mention Metro Area's innovative electro-disco. Featuring subterranean basslines, ambient synth pads, dubby beats and interlocking pop melodies, Broker/Dealer's porous, punchy tracks and classy melodic nuances have been eliciting comparisons with the likes of early Mouse on Mars and Thomas Brinkmann since the release of their first 12" on the well-respected Cologne label, Traum Schallplatten, home to B/D heroes Process, Dinky and Phillipe Cam. Having recently contributed a Process remix to the Traum artist's tribute record, Re-Processed, mixed by Doc Martin on the Fabric 10 compilation and an appearance on the Death Before Disco anthology on PrinceHouse, Broker/Dealer are receiving a phenomenal amount of well-deserved recognition for an outstanding young band at the beginning of a promising career. Broker/Dealer have made the move to Spectral Sound for their latest 12", with another release on Spectral on its way later this week.Broker/Dealer also host a monthly party called POP at the Rx Gallery in their native San Francisco.
A familiar freaky face in New York night life, Roy Dank has been playing in and around the city for the past several years. Connecting the dots between oddball disco and punk funk with bits of house, techno, electro, funk and dub reggae in the mix, Roy likes to play music that you won't normally hear, let alone make you sweaty and wildin on the dancefloor. In 2003, he launched the Pop Your Funk monthly with friend and respected DJ/Producer Brennan Green, and over the course of 2 years, the boys played alongside Maurice Fulton, Chicken Lips, Joakim, Martin Moscrop from A Certain Ratio, Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, Andrew Weatherall and John Selway, amongst others. Roy's currently in the studio cookin' up some tasty edits and original works.
Jeffrey "Menergy" Sfire's introduction to the underground dance scene and illegal warehouse parties of Detroit occurred at the age of 15. This escape from suburban high society led him to some of the city's most talented DJs and musicians, who soon exposed him to a new culture
of creative riches. Sfire's taste and skills as a DJ developed naturally as he soon began playing out at parties, clubs and sleazy gay afterhours, usually entering covertly through back doors or with a fake ID. At the age of 18, a move to Chicago exposed Sfire to a whole other side of dance, namely italo disco and high energy. Ever the jetsetter, Sfire regularly plays in LA, Detroit, Chicago, and NYC combining sounds of old and new.

Catch another free film screening tonight of the new mockumentary CSA: The Confederate States of America. It asks: What would have happened had the South won the Civil War? The straight-faced Ken Burns-style documentary is directed by Kevin Willmott and Executive Produced by Spike Lee. CSA presents an alternate modern-day America land where slavery exists as law, where other non-whites and non-Christians are relegated to reservations, where the country is embattled in a never-ending Cold War with Canada, and the Slave Shopping Network's an institution on TV.
"Many great film makers of our day got their start in New York. And at their beginning, they cut their teeth in the industry by making short films. After each film we'll have a Q&A with the filmmaker and take questions from the audience. The venue is a unique place that has a stage, screen, bar and Internet café. Joe's Pub continues to bring amazing free events - most likely with door drama - to their overbooked venue. Tonight they bring Koushik of Stones Throw and Waajeed of the Platinum Pied Pipers to the tables in honor of the release of J Dilla's Donuts album. Usually an album release listening party is a waste of time - especially one in which the artist is not performing or in attendance - but both DJs on hand have some pretty serious history and some pretty deep crates so this one may just be worth it. Arrive early on the list for free admission (maybe...)
Date: Thursday, February 9th Time: 11:00pm Location: Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street between 4th and Astor) Cost: Free with RSVP before 11pm, $10 after

For the third year in a row, Dollhaus NYC is bringing their Terrible Toy Fair to the CBGB's Gallery. "This is an alternative to the corporate toy fairs that are held across New York City in large venues and private toy rooms within the toy industry. Dollhaus artists have all been highly unusual and yet have retained a child like sense of playfulness to their work. The work is well highly executed and skillful, always valuing technique as much as concept. The concept is simple... all toys are modified, wholly made or adapted. The idea of a toy-based show is a continuation of the theme of The Dollhaus Art gallery and all of its concepts and artists." The opening party will feature live music by The Miracle of Birth (Psyche experimental black rock), Vulgaras (shock horror [sic]), and FreeNYC Fav's the Pure Fire DJs spinning Grime all night.
The City Set: An Operatic Exploration of the Urban Condition
"Imagine yourself sitting on a crowded city sidewalk--any city--and become a voyeur for a few moments. The City Set is an intimate glimpse into several lives, historical, fictitious, and somewhere in-between. And like the life of a crowded city street, they come and go in the flash of eye, the briefest glimpse into the humanity of the thousands of strangers that surround us every day.
The City Set presents three operatic episodes in urban life past and present. First, The Context of Love Lives explores the inner conflicts and public writings of Elizabeth Bishop and Oscar Wilde-both humiliated and abused for their homosexuality, one publicly, one privately. We then move into Visionary, where we see a series of hallucinations brought on by a young man's deliberate overdose of Seconol and Stoli, recollected from a more mature vantage. We conclude with Anniversary, one woman's short stroll down memory lane while waiting at a sidewalk cafe for a date that doesn't show." Continues Saturday.
Date: Saturday, February 10th Time: 8:00pm Location: LMCC Swing Space (15 Nassau Street) Cost: Free

Hipsters are all geeks (or dorks or nerds but that another conversation). You can tell because they all have outstanding experience in shopping at the Salvation army and making rubber pink boots go with a kelly green grandpa cardigan. That means you most likely had a stint with either (A) Dungeons and Dragons, (B) Final Fantasy, or (C) Magic, The Gathering. Maybe you had a hundred sided die, maybe you pelted your little brother in the head with it so you felt tough. Don't hide it... embrace your love for the geekdom and join your fellow hipster in a variety of role playing games tonight at The Fix's GameFix. There will be two tables of RPGs for those of you who are hardcore and for the more ashamed there will be classic board games such as chess, checkers, scrabble, and more. Atari Flashback will also be on the screens for a little 8bit lovin'. Come find the FreeNYC crew as I am recruiting starting right now for a mean game of clue... Col. Mustard, Candlestick, in the Study... calling it right now. That Col. Mustard is one shady dude.

Dub Trio play live, three piece, straight up dub reggae music (okay, with a bit of Bad Brains thrown in for good measure). No soundman, no rework, it's all live and it's. Having toured the world and upgraded to esteemed local venues such as Blue Note, tonight is a great chance to see them back where they started, at good old South Williamsburg's Bembe. There are two sets with (I assume) old school reggae vibes between them. Bembe was one of the chiller spots in the burg before the instituted a "no caps" policy but lets see if they can keep that old school feeling tonight since its a sunday. Highly Recommended.

The "Global Issues in Design and Visuality" lecture series continues to day with a discussion of national and post-national identities... "Modern Olympic Games are usually promoted as extravagant events that offer world-wide visibility to the host-city, while also strengthening the bonds of the local community. At the same time, the Olympics are often criticized as being representative of a rootless, ahistorical culture, 'a lexicon of deceit and self delusion' that takes the subject of 'shared humanity' as its pretext and distorts it to fit particular ideologies. This lecture examines the role of design in affirming established identities or configuring new ones. It questions whether the Olympic city and the design aspects involved, from the athletes’ uniforms to the stadia themselves, can be instrumental in the configuration of post-national identities in an era that nurtures social attachments that cut across national borders."

I'll be honest, I love to read, but these days I have the attention span of Blink 182 fan when it comes to my prose. That, and its really hard to hold a book with a beer in one hand and a shot of Jack in the other. Thankfully, Drunken! Careening! Writers! is back again this month at KGB Bar (a place where I - oddly enough - popped my 21 year old drinkers cherry). The premise is simple, each month the writers must read a piece which well written, under 15 minutes in length, and make you laugh at some point. Tonights reader/writers are Anne Elliot, boni joi, and Clem Paulsen. Bios after the jump.
Date: Thursday, February 16th Time: 7:00pm Location:KGB Bar (85 East 4th Street) Cost: Free

We've got the inside scoop on a couple great free film screenings coming up over the next few weeks. Tonight's is "Date Movie," a hilarious spoof on romantic comedies such as Meet The Parents, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Wedding Planner, and My Best Friend’s Wedding. The twisted minds of two of the six screenwriters behind Scary Movie this time skewer the romantic comedy genre. The new film tells the story of hopeless romantic Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan), who has finally met the man of her dreams, the very British Grant Fuckyerdoder. But before they can have their “Big Fat Greek Wedding,” they’ll have to “Meet the Parents;” hook-up with “The Wedding Planner,” and contend with Grant’s friend Andy-a spectacularly beautiful woman who wants to put an end to her “Best Friend’s Wedding.”

"Among normal humans live the "Others" possessing various supernatural powers. They are divided up into the forces of light and the forces of the dark, who signed a truce several centuries ago to end a devastating battle. Ever since, the forces of light govern the day while the night belongs to their dark opponents. In modern day Moscow the dark Others actually roam the night as vampires while a "Night Watch" of light forces, among them Anton, the movie's protagonist, try to control them and limit their outrage."

My opening comment on this one is "better late than never!" If you have some time to spare this weekend I recommend you head downtown to the Tribeca Cinemas' Gallery. Last Saturday kicked off their opening of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride The Exhibit which will only run through Monday, Febuary 20th. The show features special Stop-Motion Animation and Artwork from Corpse Bride. In addition to the exhibit this weekend, Tribeca Cinemas is holding a Tim Burton retrospective and playing a number of his films including Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetle Juice and Edward Scissorhands. Leave it to the people over at newmindspace to come up with this one. They have given us Capture the Flag games, SUbway Parties, and now Pillow Fights. "Feathers fly and teddies soar as you converge on Union Square for a massive urban pillow fight! Swing and whack as you evade pillow-wielding assailants on E 14th St. Bring a pillow to the square at 2 PM and wait for the signal. Pillow fight!" Now while I would prefer it be a tad bit warmer for said pillow fight, the down filled sacks will fly come rain (or snow) or shine. And the rules state "Soft pillows only! Swing lightly, many people will be swinging at once. Do not swing at people without pillows or with cameras. Remove glasses beforehand!"
Date: Saturday, February 18th Time: 2:00pm - 3:00pm Location: South Side of Union Square, 14th and Broadway Cost: Free
Jeff Soto is back with a solo show in NYC once again. This boy has been high up on my "art hero's" list for some time now. Soto's work bears a resemblance to that of Tim Biskip or Gary Basemen through a mudded palate and complicated, fantastic figures. His work, however, deals more with the concepts of futuristic and space-like creates. Aliens, robots, and outherworldy beings inhabit Soto's world and are exhibited on canvases that combine tranquil landscapes with post-apocalyptic torment. This show continues through March 18th
Date: Saturday, February 18th Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm Location:Jonathan Levine Gallery (529 West 20th Street, 9E) Cost: Free
Newman Popiashvili Gallery is showing the second solo exhibition of Heather Cantrell entitled The Extended Family. The photographic series encompasses 10 black and white portraits of Generation X-ers falsely accused of being the offspring of Charles Manson's Family. Date: Saturday, February 18th Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm Location: Newman Popiashvili Gallery, 504 W 22nd Street Cost: Free
Just last night I was talking about how I don't take advantage of all the great jazz in this city anymore. Maybe it's because Smalls is gone and so affordable jazz is a little harder to come by. But what falls in my lap today? The Rhythm Road series. The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad program presents selected professional jazz and urban music performers on concert tours to countries where there is limited exposure to live American culture. Prior to their departure to Egypt, Kosovo and many other destinations, these bands will perform in Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. This afternoon's show features the JazzSabrosan Latin Quartet and the Opus Akoben Hip Hop Ensemble.
Date: Saturday, February 18th Time: 1:00pm & 3:00pm Location: Lincoln Center - Frederick P. Rose Hall: Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola (33 W. 60th St.) Cost: Free

Opening today at the Winston Wächter Gallery is New York born artist Christopher Reilly's new solo exhibition. The work address imagery of natural transformation and evolution, drawing inspiration from iconic eastern and western imagery including the goddess and nature. His work emerges from an interest in the juxtaposition of inherent duality and the fusion of opposites, incorporating natural life forms like the frog and dragonfly, which symbolize the eternal cycle of evolution and the jellyfish, which alludes to pleasure and pain. His paintings often include foliage, seeds, and blossoms to indicate the eternal nature of natural cycles and the nascent stages of growth. Though based primarily on natural forms and spiritual embodiments, Reilly creates a dream-space, a realm characterized by imagination and mystery. [chopped and screwed press release]
Date: Tuesday, February 21st Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm Location: Winston Wächter Gallery (39 East 79th Street) Cost: Free
It takes quite a title for me to get excited about an event with no description. But that's exactly what this week's Global Issues in Design & Visuality lecture did when I learned the subject was "The Self versus the Fashion Industry." Something every designer deals with is trend, market, brand verses self, etc and having worked in fashion for years I can attest that compromises are made every day. It will be interesting to see how Van Dyk Lewis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Textiles and Apparel at Cornell University, approaches the subject. This is a college lecture but all are welcome (be on time or the teacher WILL yell at you).
Grab your local construction worker, garbage man or general thug in an oversized white Jeezy tee shirt with fake jewlery selling cand bars for his basketball team and take them down for a bit of women's rights education at this free film screening... "War Zone is about sex, power and what happens when men—either knowingly or unknowingly—threaten a woman's right to walk undisturbed on the streets. What exactly do catcalls, leers or a whole litany of other behaviors mean to a woman? And why do men engage in these behaviors?" Discussion panel guests include members of Holla Back NYC, a local grassroots organization that empowers New Yorkers to confront and snap pics of street harassers. Light refreshments will be served. Film begins at 7pm.
Date: Tuesday, February 21st Time: 6:30pm - 9:00pm Location:Whirlwind Creative Gallery (330 West 38th St between 8th and 9th) Cost: Free with RSVP
In the spirit of the Sunday night Share events, DJ Shakey and Moldover are hosting Warper, again this month. Warper is a community digital performance and "jam session" dedicated to the use of Ableton Live software. In brief, Ableton Live is DJ/producer software that lets you multitrack samples and mix them live in real time. It has been changing the way big shots like Sasha DJ for the past few years by allowing them to built songs on the fly and mix between them seemlessly. Notable at tonight event is a set from live electronic pioneers Takuya Nakamu and John Davis. Moldover bring a tag team set with Dan Brantigan while Shakey and Steinski fill out the back room. Up until now, I have avoided hammering you with my love for Monkey Town - the experimental perfomance/video/restaurant that reopened just about 6 months ago. To be honest, the food - while affordable and fantastic - is not cheap so I feel wierd sending you to a free film screening to have you drop $50 on dinner for 2. But tonight they are doing something a bit different with a Kill Rock Stars album release party for the emo-electronic-ambient-folk band Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice. There will be an album listening, videos on the wall, and free Red Stripe while it lasts. This is a great chance to check out the space. Full menu also served (go for the fennel salad and short ribs!)

Former Andy Warhol film star Ivy Nicholson will be celebrating her birthday at the swanky euro-frequented posh uptown champagne bar Club Fizz. Free bellini's sound quite enticing and I am always looking for a reason to get all donned up for the evening (dress is semi formal, jackets for men, no sneakers, no "do-rags"). Great spot to impress a date and make her forget that you are collecting unemployment, sitting home, writing a blog about free crap.
Date: Thursday, February 21st Time: 10:00pm Location: Club Fizz (137 East 55th St. at Lexington) Cost: Free with RSVP
Due to my recent travels I have come to really appreciate a good hotel shop. So when this lil store opened up in the Hotel Rivington and then Trace decided to throw a little cocktail party in their honor, I realized this has got to be a top notch hotel shop. Annie O was described by Daily Candy as a "gift shop-cum-designer boutique that provides all the staples you’d expect (Visine, toothpaste, condoms, Nat Shermans) along with those you wouldn’t: French toiletries, Yosh perfumes, Shy cosmetics, Floris candles, and Paul Labrecque shower stuff." So right now you are probably thinking to yourself "why would I go here, since A, I live in the city, and B, it sounds pricey?" Well how about 2 hours of free cocktails. Yeah thats what I thought! Now go get tipsy, then brush your teeth, put visine in your bloody shot eyes and graba condom for the road!
Date: Wednesday, February 22nd Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm Location: Annie O at the Hotel Rivington, 105 Rivington Street Cost: Free with RSVP
"The true godfather of Hip Hop culture calls for everyone of every color, religion, age, gender, nation, organization, business, community, temple, church, synagogue and beyond to attend this meeting. Afrika Bambaataa wants to bring everyone together to discuss plans of action on how to confront and protest the currently unbalanced media: radio, TV, etc. He wrote, 'The fight for 2006 is on to save Hip Hop culture. Time to raise the army of people who will put the power of the Supreme Force on these satanist bastards, who are trying to control the minds of the Hip Hop World Nation. All who stand on the side of the Supreme Force, who is called by many names, STOP BEING SCARED! STAND UP AND RAISE YOUR VOICE and then GET TO WORK TO EXPOSE THESE DAMN RECORD LABELS, RADIO STATIONS, TV HIP HOP SHOWS OR WHATEVER SHOWS THAT DEPICT US IN A B.S. STEREOTYPE OF JUST BEING PIMPS, PLAYAS, GANGSTERS, H*ES, STRAIGHT UP N[WORDS]....or any other derogatory word that they use and we use to call ourselves!'"

From the Peloponnesian Wars to the Black Death and the war in Iraq, in dire times laughter has always been the best revenge. Laughter dislodges piety and short-circuits programmatic response, and some subjects are simply too big to approach in any other way.
Art Spiegelman coined the term ‘neo-sincerity’ in passing, and well he should. For more than half a century, most of the art made in sincere response to the Holocaust ranged from banal to inadequate until Spiegelman created his two "Maus" graphic novels and reinvented the Comix. Comics have from the first been boisterous, vulgar, icon-smashing and sadistic - what better language to confront the unspeakable? They are apt expressions of comedy as it has been practiced since before Aristophanes, though only one of the forms wielded by the artists in this exhibition. In the 1970s and 1980s in Eastern Bloc countries irony was the preferred weapon of writers, artists and film makers in search of an expression capable of delineating the gap between language and experience. In this age of anxiety and rage when people turn to "The Daily Show" for their news, irony itself has become the official language of power.
A new generation, particularly writers such as Jonathan Safran Foer, Jeffrey Eugenides, Michael Chabon, David Eggers and Zadie Smith, have found it necessary to invent new modes of comedy that skirt the pitfalls of sincerity and the insincerities of irony by drawing on the whole well-worn arsenal of pratfalls, satire, slapstick and shtick. Art Critic Amei Wallach surveys three generations of visual artists who amuse and appall.
Dont be scurred its time for more free movies, yay! This time on the big screen is Running Scared. The screening is being held in Brooklyn and you can pick up free passes (while the gettin's good) from 2 Brooklyn Industries locations.

It seems that every time I talk about faith and religion with people (and believe me, it happens quite often) it usually comes down to some sort of "it's complicated" answer. And that's cool, eveyone has to find their path right? Tonight is the first of two alternative worship services I am listing this week. Every Thursday the Hip Hop Church brings you worship service with a hip hop twist. Think Gospel Rappers, Hip Hop church choir, band and a DJ. In his solo-exhibition of silhouetted self-portraits, San Franciscan tattoo and graffiti artist Grime presents a commentary on the idea of beauty, banality, consumerism, politics, death and life through figurative expression. "His gritty subject matter, while varied, is impressed on the viewer by his general use of graphic, unyielding imagery and color - or the pelting prose of his writing....
We are subscribers. Faithfully. Our lives are slaves to vanity.
What will not be done in attempt to satisfy this bane of divinity.
It exists everywhere. Perverted.
For his exhibition at Invisible NYC Grime will show new works, works that are more subtle and contemplative than his earlier bolder and at times grotesque work. They seem to reflect a new stage in his life and creative thrust. This exhibition is a rare opportunity to view his work on the east coast. It is not to be missed. Continues through March 25th

If you have been a FreeNYC reader for any short period of time I'm guessing you have read a post or two about TOTH (Turntable on the Hudson to those of you that are still green). The name is basically self explainatory. So as I'm writing this the temperature outside is 20 degrees, which is a bit too nippy for frigid waters of the Hudson. So Nickodemus and Nappy G have packed up shop and taken up their winter home at Cielo.
Date: Thursday, February 23rd Time: 11:00pm - 4:00am Location: Cielo, 18 Little West 12th Cost: Free

The Stay Gold Gallery brings us another amazing group opening... this time all wrapped around the eponymous Pixies song, "Waves of Mutilation". "For many of the artists, 'Wave of Mutilation' sparked apocalyptic visions. Their work was based on the cataclysmic events that many believe will immediately precede the end of the world. Other artists in the show, however, saw this devastation in context of the natural cycle of life. They concentrated on the idea that regeneration can only come from destruction: one cannot exist without the other. Still others took the show's title as an instruction - rather than depicting a scene of mutilation, they literally destroyed their own work and used the materials in the formulation of new pieces. This exhibition will include drawing, painting, installation and some collaborative pieces." Continues through April 2nd.
Date: Friday, February 24th Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location: Stay Gold Gallery (451 Grand St, Brooklyn) Cost: Free

Years back... back back back back when I was in college, I met the most fantastic violinist. He was the type of musician who made the violin trancend - for me at least - beyond all the classical music stereotypes I had harbored into an ephemeral, personal space. Tonight, Skye Steele, is joined by an equally genius group of the young New York jazz elite as Vampire Suite. Best described as Balkan New Jazz, this quintet draws inspiration from various musical settings and cultures including jazz, rock, Balkan music and African music. Tonight is a great chance to see them for free at one of the better underground jazz spots in the city. Put best, "If Bram Stoker's imaginary Transylvania had a jazz scene, the music might sound something like this. (Jazz Review)" Highly Recommended.
Friday's at Crash Mansion are always in full effect with live rock and an open bar. Why we never write about it I am not sure. Anyway, tonight the space hosts The Primms, More, The Izzys, Landlord, and Surfact. If you like the rock then this may be your Friday night jump-off.

This is a post about a party and a party guy... While I wasn't a friend of his, nor did I really know him, Harold Hunter was friends with many people I know and was a staple in the downtown scene in NYC and a pretty bad ass skateboarder. Tonight the New York F-ckin City Party remembers Harold with DJs Gizmo, Chris Landry, IXL, Elle, and Falafel. Plus an an hour and half of free Sierra Nevada and Finlandia. But the Hush Hush Weekend just keeps bringing these amazing DJs to the tables. He is also a member of The Glass and has been a prominent face on the NYC electro-techo-whatever scene for a while now. Joining him are Nik and Jaclyn of The Bangers. This is always a good time.

So I got this info a day or two ago and was all like "a party where you have to take a car from Williamsburg? Walk 12 blocks?" But then all night tonight people kept telling me about the chill vibe, the late night fun, the top notch DJs, the bowling (!) and even the cheap drinks. So here it is... Gunther goes down tonight at Galaxie, an out of the way but (aparently) well worth it spot deep in Ridgewood (?). It's just a short car ride away however and the parties goes late, the drinks are cheap, the djs get you going, and they even have bowling and video games. Think roller skating birthday gone wild. I have been known to compulsively purchase very, very inexpensive items from flea markets/sidewalks/dollar stores. These unnecessary purchases are almost immediately stored in the recesses of my closet where they remain forever because they're too, well, too cheap for me to wear outside. You can only imagine my delight when I found out about tonight’s swap party at Botanica Bar. Not only will I be able to release my cheap gems to other bargain-addicts like myself, but I’ll be able to pick up enough of other people’s free shit to ensure that my closet is never, ever even remotely barren again. As if this isn’t amazing enough, the party is free and the alcohol will be flowing to beats provided by the lovely DJ Shakey. Thrift On!

"How have artists participated in their representation in the past? How do they work as co-curators and co-producers of their work today? This lecture examines how artists are participating in the production and the consumption of their work through the notion of branding. Historical examples, such as Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys, will be discussed as precedents to contemporary branded artists, such as Damien Hirst and Maurizio Cattelan who capitalize on the conflation of publishing, communications, art production and the market. Among the other artists to be discussed are: Takashi Murakami, Tracey Emin, Vanessa Beecroft, and Christian Philip Mueller." Part of the Global Issues in Design & Visuality series.
