Lets Talk About The Green Fairy

Cooper Union teaches its students about the important things in life... like absinthe.

"Absinthe (the Green Fairy, la Fée Verte) has a romantic history like no other drink. This pale green alcoholic liqueur fueled and inspired the poets and artists of late 19th and early 20th century Europe. It is impossible to imagine painters like Toulouse Lautrec, Degas, Manet, and Van Gogh or writers like Verlaine, Rimbaud, Joyce, and Hemingway without the elaborate ritual that accompanied this beverage. No other drink has aroused such opposition as this wormwood-based beverage that was held responsible for all manner of crime, degeneration, sexual license and degeneracy. David Weir, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at The Cooper Union."

The Conspiracy of Art

Reading and writing about this one makes my brain hurt like it used to during education days at New School. But lets try this... Today, Jean Baudrillard will read from and sign copies of his new book The Conspiracy of Art after a conversation with Sylver Lotringer, founding publisher of Semiotext(e).

"In The Conspiracy of Art, Baudrillard questions the privilege attached to art by its practitioners. Art has lost all desire for illusion: feeding back endlessly into itself, it has turned its own vanishment into an art unto itself. Far from lamenting the ‘end of art,’ Baudrillard celebrates art’s new function within the process of insider-trading. Spiralling from aesthetic nullity to commercial frenzy, art has become transaesthetic, like the rest of society as a whole.

Conceived and edited by life-long Baudrillard collaborator Sylvère Lotringer, The Conspiracy of Art presents his writings on art in a complicitous dance with politics, economy and media. Culminating with “War Porn,” a scathing analysis of the spectacular images of Abu Ghraib prison as a new genre of reality TV, the book folds back on itself to question the very nature of radical thought."

Date: Wednesday, November 2nd
Time: 7pm
Venue: The Tilton Gallery, 8 East 76th St (at 5th Ave)

The saving grace of this little experimental, temporary shopping experience is that they will be serving free end-of-work cocktails from 5-7 for the next four days (but there is no work on the weekends so who planned this thing?) Other than that... eh? Check the site for more info. Continues through Monday.

Hypnogoogia Opening

hypno05_poster_th.jpg

I can't put this any better than the press release... a perfect "hazy afternoon" if you ask me... " Deitch Projects is pleased to present Hypnogoogia, a collaborative installation by Jim Drain and Ara Peterson. In this incredible cumulative show, 18 Wooster St. will be transformed into an interactive, spinning landscape- a psychedelic music of the spheres- featuring work produced by the artists over the past two years. Moving through corridors of rainbow pinwheels, a huge kaleidoscope hallway, and four exactingly gorgeous geodesic sphere-shaped paintings rotating slowly on the ground and ceiling, the viewer becomes immersed in their lyrical, spherical environment. Hypnotically spinning on the first platform is a twelve-foot rainbow ottoman, and above, almost absurdly surveiling this rotating, morphing, glowing heterotopia is a chromed set of stocks. All pieces are bathed in the skylight-altering light disks that slowly mix the primary colors onto the artscape below." Continues through December 24th.

Date: Friday, November 4th
Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: Deitch Projects (18 Wooster Street)

Imagescape Estonia

"In Imagescape Estonia - New York Scherrer is as interested in the images that are projected as in the landscape the images are projected onto. Footage of abstracted nature was collected during a residency at the Polli Talu Arts Center in rural Estonia. These moving images are projected into one of the East Village's beautiful Community Gardens, illuminating the autumn leaves of the trees and bushes, the flowers and the walls of the surrounding buildings, shaping the garden into a new, mysterious land and lightscape. The garden becomes part of the projections - the projections part of the garden."

24-Hour Incidental

"The Swiss Institute is pleased to announce 24-Hour Incidental, a one-day program of simultaneous performance works by 10 visual artists, as part of Performa05. From noon to noon, the SI will host a marathon of work by 10 innovative synthesizers of visual art and performance. Works will range from the necessarily interactive, as with Karl Holmqvist's project involving visitor's favorite songs from the Magnetic Fields' album 69 Love Songs, to the virtually immaterial, as with Jason Dodge's piece Kristin Larson has been to the South Pole, which consists simply of an anonymous visit from Ms. Larson. 24-Hour
Incidental will intersect two days, carving out an irregular passage of time and space. Projects will start and finish, overlap, interfere and ultimately wash away within the parameters carved out by the project's curator, artist Jordan Wolfson. More after the fold. Found on NonsenseNYC.

Enjoy a radio broadcast tour of the secret insides of the pool today along with a quiet dance party b DJ Mike O'Conner to follow. NYC Marathon

Today is the Marathon. Unless you have been under a rock, this is one of those super important races around the world. Personally, I prefer to get out my summer time bbq chairs, set them up on Bedford ave early, drink beer and heckle the runners. Of course, that was much more fun when Puff Daddy was in the the race... but still... The prime viewing will be in central park of course. Check the site for full info, schedule and a course map. An Evening With The Ganzfeld

The New York celebration of Ganzfeld four continues today with a conversation between Peter Saul, Jim Nutt, Dan Nadel, and David Sandlin. A special DJ performance by Paper Rad will follow.

Nutt and Saul will discuss their four-decade-long careers, influences, image-making, and the peculiar mix of humor, beauty and savagery that each calls their own. Friends and mutual admirers for decades, Nutt and Saul represent the satiric, wise-cracking, graphic side of contemporary art, making figurative work that is not afraid to go for the jugular. Between the two, Nutt and Saul have influenced scores of contemporary artists and illustrators, including Chris Ware, Mike Kelley, Gary Panter, Raymond Pettibon, and Carroll Dunham. This is the first time the two have spoken on the same stage. The conversation will be prefaced by a special musical performance by cult-favorite art collective Paper Rad.

Picture This...

"Picture Israel offers a fresh look at everyday life in Israel from a group of both new and veteran photographers, most of whom have never before exhibited their work.

The nine photographers go beyond the standard images found in the media to capture the diversity of the people and landscapes of contemporary Israel. Sometimes sublime, sometimes commonplace, always immediate and complex, these images range from Miki Kratsman's photographs of children from the Palestinian village of Carmel swimming in a reservoir filled with algae, to Rina Castelnuovo's powerful images of families evacuating from Gaza. Each artist brings his or her own vision and style, be it intimate portrait, natural landscape or photomontage."

Global Issues in Design & Visuality

This Week: Product Design as Cultural Critique.

This series fulfills the "I want to go back to school" urge that creeps up every few months. It's a sit in lecture as part of an amazing coarse taught at Parsons this year dealing with a variety of various social concerns applicable to facets of design. As for today's topic...

"The U.S. claims free-market capitalism as one of its main exports and consumer products often serve as the enticement to embrace its ideology. But as the worlds’ diverse cultures adopt and adapt this ideology, are we at risk of creating a corporate, global monoculture? This lecture presents critical product design practices that challenge market-driven orthodoxies and that re-frame design as a strategy for contesting a fully corporate future."

Lecture with Jonathan Lipkin

610.jpg

For 15 years, Jonathan Lipkin has observed the phenomenon of digital photography as a photographer, writer, and educator. He is coauthor of In the Realm of the Circuit and his newest book, Photography Reborn: Image-Making in the Digital Age will be released by Harry N. Abrams in November 2005. From the publisher: "In this important companion to a new art form, author Jonathan Lipkin chronicles the rise of digital technology and explores its impact as well as the limits of its possibilities. Every kind of digital image from MRI scans to fine art is highlighted here, from an obscure scientific application, through its adaptation by pioneer computer artists, to its acceptance by the mainstream of the art world. This seminal text—coupled with fascinating images and examples by contemporary artists Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Pedro Meyer, Nancy Burson, and Loretta Lux—is uniquely appropriate for anyone interested in visual communications, photography, and culture." This event is free but I recommend contacting the department to see if they would like an RSVP if you plan on attending.

Studio Distro. Listening Party

Judging by the number of listening parties that have been popping up this week, you would think that there was a shortage of DJs in New York. So instead of going out and hearing DJs live, hit up this party and listen to their latest releases while drowing the awkwardness of a listening party in Red Strip (its wierd enough to stare at a DJ all night, where do you look at a Kodak store while you listen). At least the albums are good, with the latest from Rich Medina, DJ Scribe, OP!, and Shakeyface on the... ur.. CD player. Make sure you check out Scribe Wednesday night at the DubTempo 2 year anniversary party to see what he's all about.

Three Cities Against the Wall

drooker_web.jpg

"Three Cities Against the Wall is an exhibition protesting the Separation Wall under construction by Israel in the Occupied Territories of Palestine. This project involves groups of artists in Ramallah, Palestine; Tel Aviv, Israel; and New York City. The show will be held simultaneously in all three cities in November 2005. Through this collaborative exhibition, the organizers and participating artists will draw attention to the reality of the Wall and its disastrous impact on the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians by the separation of Palestinian communities from each other and from their fertile lands, water resources, schools, hospitals and work places; thereby "contributing to the departure of Palestinian populations," as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has warned." Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic

silverman.jpg

"Sarah Silverman is known as one of the funniest and most provocative people in comedy. Despite the current political climate, in JESUS IS MAGIC she takes on such pitch-black topics as September 11th, unwanted body hair, and the Holocaust, and spins them into decidedly un-politically correct comedic gold. The film comprises Silverman's performance before a live audience interwoven with stylish musical numbers and backstage intrigue. Bob Odenkirk, Brian Posehn and Silverman's comedian/actor sister, Laura Silverman, make appearances along with Silverman's band The Silver Men." It all goes down for free tonight at Galapagos as part of the Sneak Peak 35mm series.

Date: Wednesday, November 9th
Time: 8:00pm
Location: Galapagos Art Space (70 North 6th, Williamsburg)
Cost: Free

Giant Step Listening Party

519.jpg

Giant Step has consistantly pushed out and eclectic array of top notch albums for the past 15 years. I first got into these cats back in the 90's when they were heavy supports of NYC's own Groove Collective. Tonight they will feature three fine new releases by themselves and their friends at the already-played-out-mecca-to-consumerism, the Kodak One Gallery. Listen to Jazzanova's "Remixes 2003-2005," Lewis Taylor's soulful "Stoned," and FreeNYC favorite Lady Sovereign's self-titled debut. Probably drinks because who wants to stand around for 4 hours and look at Kodak products without a cocktail (but no promises)

The Rumors Are True

Rumors of War is "a painting installation by Kehinde Wiley inspired by the history of equestrian portraiture. The installation features four larger-than-life canvases each updating a specific Old Master painting with a contemporary sitter, framed in custom-designed ornate, gilded frames. Soaring to heights of over nine feet, the paintings’ exaggeration of scale and high-keyed cinematic colour highlight Wiley’s interest in the aestheticization of power and masculinity.

Retaining the trappings of power implied in their sources, Wiley reproduces the rippling shoulders of thoroughbreds, the baroquely billowing fabrics, and the vague, idealized pastoral backgrounds-- but instead of polished riding boots in the gilded stirrups, we find Nike High-tops." But whether you are looking for the stirrups or the Nikes you should swing by Deitch for tonights opening.

Date: Friday, November 11th

Venue: Deitch Gallery, 76 Grand Street

Bill Viola Opening

Video artist Bill Viola is my quite hero of video art. While people such as Paper Rad are out there making acid-inspired video works that remind me of the early rave days, Viola is studying the sublte colors of dawn over an old oak tree. This new exhibition of his works features two large projects and a flat screen work. His work transends conciousness and is well rooted in pan-religious enlightenment. This show is highly recommended but I suggest not only going to the opening tonight but on your lunch hour when you can contemplate the work in peace. Continues through December 22nd

Helping The Drunkards Get Drunk One Tasting at a Time

What better things are there to do a 2pm on Saturday afternoon than to start hittin' the booze. Stop of at Acker Merrall & Condit for the Piedmont Pleasures Free Italian Wine Tasting. They have "a lovely sampling to tempt your palate, from the big, bold Barolo to the delicate Dolcetto, to a lively Barbera." I'm not really sure hwat that means, but I think they are just trying to say "come drink this wine, it tastes good."

Date: Saturday, November 12th
Time: 2pm - 5pm
Venue: Acker Merrall & Condit, 160 W. 72nd St
Cost: Free

Ok, so take a couple hours to sober up and cleanse your pallet. Now its 7pm and you can really start drinkin' the good stuff at the Bourbon Tasting with Kentucky Bourbon Distillers. "The handsome Drew Kulsveen from Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (KBD) will be on hand to pour his whiskeys, sign bottles, and answer questions about how his bourbon is made, aged, and bottled. The Kulsveen family has bottled some of the finest private label small batch and single barrel bourbon and rye whiskeys on the market." Again I say I am not really sure what that means so my translation is the same, "come drink this bourbon, it tastes good."

David Hollier's Club27

051112-hollier.jpg

So yeah, you are stuck in Brooklyn this weekend. So yeah, the L sucks. So yeah, go check this art show out after you go to BAP. David Hollier's "Club27 is a remembrance of the lives of some of the most influential contemporary musicians. Although they achieved musical greatness and, in most cases, global recognition they all died at the age of 27. The list begins with Robert Johnson, a Mississippi Bluesman, who died in 1938 and includes, amongst others, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison D. Jones and Kurt Cobain. In astrology, the age of 27 represents a pivotal point called ‘Saturn Return’. In every one of these cases, whether the cause of death was falling asleep at the wheel on the way back from a gig, or gruesomely violent suicide, the music led them to their deaths. Now it is the music that keeps them alive." David is a good man and one of the bartenders at Spuyten Duyvil to boot. This show comes highly recommended for wasting away your Saturday night. Walk Dont Destroy

During the four years I have lived in Brooklyn, I watched as the old brownstones and the grandma and grandpa owned delis have turned into luxury condos and chain stores. I mean come on, there is a Subway and a Tasty D on Bedford Ave in Williamsburg. We moved here to escape all that was Manhattan, but if the developers have their say, Manhattan will soon make its way to BK.

"Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn, the umbrella group spearheading the opposition against Bruce Ratner's mega real estate deal in Prospect Heights, invites you to express your support for sensible, community-driven development by participating in a day of merrymaking, light exercise and fundraising. Walk Don't Destroy is a walkathon fundraiser in which participants will walk a path within the affected historic community, tracing the proposed project site.

Pass by the brownstones, historical buildings and mom and pop businesses that will be destroyed if Ratner gets his way, and be cheered on by the neighborhood's residents. Funds raised will be used for DDDb's legal team, which is now preparing for costly court battles over eminent domain, environmental degradation and the misappropriation of publicly owned property.

Participants are encouraged to organize teams, wear "Save Brooklyn" themed costumes, and bring banners. Prizes will be awarded for top fundraisers and best costumes." Click here for event info, and click here to register.

Creative Responses to Race, Violence and Community: A Call for Peace

"Please join us in an event addressing the spate of hate crimes that plagued New York City neighborhoods this summer. Over the course of three months, gangs of primarily white youths attacked two African American men in two separate incidents in Brooklyn, and an African American man killed a white woman in White Plains. In each case, the attackers cited the victim's race as the reason for their violent actions. As Italian Americans, we are particularly concerned with the fact that each of these attacks involved Italian Americans. Join us for an evening of readings and performance, featuring writers, rappers, musicians, performers, and community activists who are committed to finding creative and collaborative ways to combat racism. Participants: Manifest, rapper BR, rapper Rosette Capotorto, poet Ronnie Mae Painter, visual artist/writer Edvige Giunta, essayist/poet Hiram Perez, writer/activist Stephanie Romeo, writer George De Stefano, essayist/author Phyllis Capello, poet/musician Cristogianni Borsella, poet Bob Viscusi, poet/novelist Chiara Montalto, actress/associate producer Salvatore Lumetta, writer/filmmaker Michela Musolino, singer/musician Organized by Kym Ragusa (filmmaker/writer), Jennifer Guglielmo (historian/writer), and Joseph Sciorra (folklorist)"

System Failure Screening

06776.jpg

"System Failure: Violence, Abuse and Neglect in the California Youth Authority offers testimony of the human rights violations taking place at the California Youth Authority (CYA), one of the largest youth correctional agencies in the country. Many youth languish in isolation cells, with little human contact and almost no education. The costs to the people of California both financially and in terms of public safety are enormous: $80,000 per year, per youth. Despite this huge price tag, more than 90% of CYA youths who leave the system are re-arrested within three years. Are rehabilitative, restorative justice models a more viable alternative to these 'punishment for punishment’s sake' correctional facilities? (2004. 30 min. Followed by discussion.)"

Modernity Yu, Yu Got What I Need

"Modernity in YU deals with the modernism of Yugoslavia in its communist or more precisely Titoist era. The sculptural works in this series are remakes of modernist partisan monuments. The original partisan monuments were erected as heroic gestures throughout Yugoslavia, according to designs that appealed to a lingering belief in utopian ideals. In contrast, Lulic's works are small, some the size of a nightstand, while others measure as large as six-cubic feet..." Tonight from 6:30 to 7:30, Marko Lulic will present his projects and screen Mysteries of Disco, 2000, The Moderns (Vienna), 2005, and Lulic House No.1 (Weekend Utopia), 2005.

Ben Ruby

Ben Ruby plays that good old singer songwriter style music. Usually thats a big red flag in my world and brings of memories of being in high school with your guitar playing friend that the girls swooned over. But Ben plays a sort of Tom Waits, meets (lively) Damien Jurado in a country bar over a pint and a piano style that holds all the emotion without the sappy camp. Oh, he also plays piano mash-ups (mp3) which are awesome. Tonight he breaks out the piano in an opening performance for Kevin Ray (who I don't know).

The High Cost of Low Price

Robert Greenwald's Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price is a documentary look at the effect that Wal-Mart is having on small business and the living wage world wide. This is not a new battle but it is nice to see someone stand up and take the movement out of the hands of the easily avoided protesters and bring it onto the screen. Wal-Mart is trying desperately to stop this film from reaching the public so catch it now before the billions get it band.

Get Philth-y

Just as nightlife was starting to reach its winter time dip, and all of our favorite parties decided to start charging $5 at the door, Philth-y is here to shed some new sounds on the scene. This new party is bringing some more innovative DJs to the scene as well as some big UK hitters to smaller venues stateside.

For tonight's inaugural party, Luke & Leroy welcomes UK's Boca45. Boca's style ranges everywhere from Northern Soul to funk to hip hop which blends together seemlessly. Its kind of like listening to mash-ups but with out the... well... mash-up. A nice crunk-free evening to add to NYC's over-hip hopped nightlife.

Tantamounter 24/7

In one of the more interesting art installations/performances I have heard about this year, the Viennese art collective "Gelitin" will spend 7 straight days in an enclosed "copy-duplicator-transformation maching" at the Leo Koenig Gallery. Visitors are invited to insert and object, idea, or smell into the machine and - after an announced waiting time - the machine with "export" the result out the other end. The machine will be a sealed chamber for 7 days and the artists will not be able to leave. Wish I had a picture so I knew what this looked like because it sounds crazy. Continues through the 23rd

The Worst Noel

Okay, all my friends are hating on Christmas these days. Yeah, I think we get out of hand on spending for presents and yeah, it has been totally comodified by the Hallmarks of the world but I don't care. I get to eat lots of food, see my family, drink insane amount of egg nog (not store bought... gasp) and reflect on the year that past with a nice glass of port. Okay, maybe there is a lot of drinking involved as well but there is still food and family.

But if you are a hater, or know an Xmas hater, then this reading of The Worst Noel is for you. "With the holiday season fast approaching local New York authors help us to laugh, groan and commiserate about the horrible personal holiday stories that each of us has! Among them, Mike Albo (The Underminer) and his romantic Christmas-in-Paris dream, which turns into a nightmare after an accident leaves him with a bloodied cross on his forehead, and the festive car ride that Cynthia Kaplan (Why I'm Like This) takes, which goes astray when she hits a deer and “Donner is Dead” becomes her family’s holiday story. Also reading, Valeria Frankel (The Accidental Virgin) and John Marchese(Building the Magical Box)." Authors will personalize copies of The Worst Noel.

Painting Flowers and Diaries

Nobuyoshi Araki is the man when it comes to japanese erotic photography. Whether shooting the red light distict, bondage, or erotic photos of his own wife, Araki has a eye for the subtle beauty of lusty extremes. This exhibit, however, also includes another side of his work. Painting Flower is a 2004 series of wax flowers daubed with glowing paint. The result is both subtle and haunting. These images share the gallery with Araki's Diaries which is a collection of "bound women, autoerotic transgressions that transcends confinement, discipline, hierarchy and ritual compression. Highly recommended and continues through January 14th.

Brought to you by the letter "M"

We got some mis-info on this in the beginning... This party has no RSVP but is $5 at the door and you must say "Beautiful Decay Party" else they will charge you $20. Still well worth the cover.

It's Beautiful Decay's issue "M" release party and boy do these guys know how to put a good party together. The obvious is the 2 hour open bar of Steel Reserve (yuck) and Bacardi (yum). The bonus is some serious live performances and DJs. Like Roc Raida (X-ecutioners) live on stage beside Adam Deitch (drummer for Average White Band, Earth, Wind, & Fire, and the Nuyorican). Or Brooklyn's own Noble Society bringing down the heavy reggae vibe.

As for DJs, its kind of a who's who of FreeNYC favorites. Moe Choi and Chasekills combine forces as Robots in a Coma, DJ Synapse is here, as is DJ Gravy. J Smoke from Scratch Academy brings the technical aspect, and the Deck Demons bring the WTF factor with 4 dudes on 5 turntables. See you at the spot!

Date: Friday, November 18th
Time: 9:00pm
Location: Happy Valley (14 East 27th Street)
Cost: $5, say "Beautiful Decay Party" at the door

Dub War Returns

With all of my favorite Grime parties missing on the scene until this winter, its nice to see that the Dub War crew is keeping things on lockdown with subsonic bass and driving beats to help me end my work week right. Combining elements of DnB, dub, dancehall, and techno, dubstep is back ... this time invading manhattan with the UK's Kode 9 in the line up. "Kode 9 is the zen master of London's Hyperdub Records, and the mad scientist behind the label's twisted dub sound. True next level dread bass! He's joined tonight by the US's own Joe Nice, our "dubstep ambassador." $3 drafts all night.

Vic Rice performs live dub the old school way, from a global stock of old reel to reel spool, into an old mixing board with lots of warm echo toys, and out through a warm bass-filled system. He is the man when it comes to ska bass in NYC and one of the key members behind the legendary Version City.

And then there is Trumystic Sound System, a collective that arose from the ashes of NYC growing jungle/illbient scene several years back. Ish, Soothsayer, & Divaship play a variety of hip hop, jungle, reggae, and who knows what along with singing rapping and who knows what. They dropped a seminal album on the NYC illbient scene, Product 3, along with Dr. Israel in 1998. It will be great to hear what they are up to now.

Treasure Don and Daddy Lion Chandell are on the mics for the night and the boys from Bastard Jazz - promoters of the fine Dubwise Sessions - act as selectors for the other bits. It all goes down at Studio BPM, a little underground (literally!) shanty of a club by the river in Williamsburg. You'll know it because its the only open door on the block. Highly recommended.

The Plain of Heaven Closing

For the past month or so, Creative Time have taken over a disused elevated rail structure that runs up the west side of Manhattan and converted it into an amazing art space. The line is going to be destroyed at the completion of the project. Well, tonight is the final night of The Plain of Heaven and the only time that Trisha Donnelly’s sound installation will play (from 5:40 - 6:00pm). Highly recommended if you have not yet seen this exhibit.

Not One More Mother's Child - Cindy Sheehan Talk/Signing

"Cindy Sheehan lost her son, Army Specialist Casey Austin Sheehan, in an ambush in Sadr City, Baghdad, on April 4, 2004. As information became available that the war in Iraq was based on lies and 'cooked intelligence,' she began speaking out and testifying in the halls of Congress. In August 2005, she went to Crawford, Texas, to confront President Bush, and the floodgates of a renewed American peace movement were opened. Cindy Sheehan is a moving writer and vibrant storyteller. In Not One More Mother’s Child, she chronicles her thoughts and actions, reflections on war and peace, truth and accountability, sharing for the first time in book form the story of her journey from grieving mom to effective activist. With a Foreword by Congressman John Conyers, Jr."

Sunday Salon Series

logo_medium.gif

Sunday's are always the laziest day of the week for me. Getting up at one, wandering over to breakfast, wandering back home for a nap. Okay, that's in an ideal world but it sounded. Nice. If you are wandering the (Williamsburg/Bushwick) neighborhood today, however, you may want to swing by the Sunday Salon Series at Stain. Four New York City authors read stories and book excepts. Stained is a NY themed "arts lounge" that has a nice supply of local brews and wines, free internet, and a great vibe.

Echo & The Bunnymen afterparty.

Will Sergeant, aka Glide, is one of the founding members of Echo and the Bunnymen. Tonight he spins a rare set after their sold out show at Irving Plaza. Thankfully, Sergeant creates a fantastic interpritation of dirty sample-infused electro breaks somewhere between UNKLE and Rabbit in the Moon. Doors are at 10 but I assume since its after the show then Sergeant will not spin until around 1am.

Global Issues in Design & Visuality

Lecture series continues... I have ranted enough about my love for this series so I won't bore you again. Tonight's topic... Zara:

"Zara, a retail company from Spain, is the world’s third largest clothing retailer with 638 stores in 47 countries around the world. They eschew conventional marketing strategies (based on buying patterns in different localities) for a consumer-based strategy mapped not by region but by technological/social networks. This lecture will use Zara as a case study to illustrate the changing paradigm of production and consumption, once mutually exclusive now interdependent."

Rubble: Unearthing The History of Demolition

"From the straight boulevards that "demolition artist" Haussmann smashed through rambling old Paris to the frenzied implosion of Las Vegas hotel towers, demolition has long played an ambiguous role in the architectural imagination. Author Jeff Byles surveys the evolution of unbuilding techniques, as old-school wreckers evolved into highly adept practitioners of "structural jujitsu." He covers pioneers like NYC’s Jacob Volk who crumbled skyscrapers in the Wall St area, the implosion of the Pruitt-Igoe housing complex in St Louis + the profound impact the "disappearance" of tall buildings makes on the skyline & the urban psyche."

Dr. Israel at Nublu

8291_lg.jpg

I'm going to try and make this my only pay post this week but its well worth it. Dr. Israel is back in NYC after a long hiatus with his unique blend of reggae/dub/jungle. I had the privilege of catching their "back in town" show at the Delancey last Friday where they ripped an insane set to the wrong crowd in the wrong venue (what happens to A&R people when the drummer drops 170BPMs? Chaos). But our small crew held it down in a blunt filled haze to what was one of the most unique sounds I have seen on stage in a while. The intimacy of Nublu is a much better venue tonight for this special Dr. Israel solo dub set. Resident "Jack of all Trades" DJ Cocoa Cracker Brown and G. Rizo hold down the in between parts. Highly recommended.

Zimbabwe Legit

Tonight is the first night of BAMcafé's Hip-Hop Holiday with Akim Funk Buddha. Raised in Zimbabwe, Akim is a multifaceted performer. His performances combine "rhyming, beat-boxing, mouth and body percussion, story-telling, break-dancing, Mongolian throat-singing, Indonesian monkey chants, body-balancing, martial arts, tap and circus arts... to create distinctly spiritual yet urban sonic and visual compositions."

Tonight, Akim is joined by his brother Dumi as the reunited Zimbabwe Legit to celebrate the re-release of their Brothers from the Mother album which draws a notable reference to Black Sheep (it was produced by Mr. Lawnge) while still exhibiting a unique voice. This show is at the refined and intimate BAMcafé where you can sit and enjoy for a $10 minimum (NOTE: I have often seen shows at BAM cafe and simply stood by the bar without the worries of a $10 minimum).

Stay (old Abaya) is quickly making some serious appearances on our site here. Tonight the Microcosm Music team is bringing the grand depth on NYC's electronic music scene to their floor. The night will range from live string quartet music to techno and all points in between. High on on my list of intersts is Giles Dickerson's dub set which should run the gambit from roots reggae to electro dub a la Deadbeat and Al Haca. Also, it will be nice to hear Breakbeat Science's DJ Clever spin his unique blend of leftfield drum & bass as the boy has been off my radar for a minute now. Are You Playing a Dangerous CD

Nov30DRMFlyer_300.png

So here's a little story for you... Last month I was in Tokyo and I bought a couple local CDs (at $27 each!). So then I got home, and they won't play in my computer because they are "copy protected." Now, if you are like me, you don't own a CD player, you have a laptop, and iPod , and maybe some other digital music playing device. So what do you do? Get mad and protest, that's what. Join NYU's Free Culture tonight outside of Tower Records as they protest Sony's DRM copy protection format. Download the informational flyer here.

Date: Wednesday, November 30th
Time: 7:00pm
Location: Tower Records (East 4th and Broadway)
Cost: Free

Scottie B and & Aaron LaCrate

Note: Just found out this party is $5 so be aware but Ge-Ology is on the bill as well so its pretty serious DJs all night long.

Hopefully we will get more info on this one soon but these two are no newcomers to FreeNYC. We love their down and dirty Baltimore styles and its good to see them backing spinning some free nights in the NYC.

Date: Wednesday, November 30th
Time: 9:00pm - 2:00am
Location: 6's & 8's (205 Chrystie St. at Stanton)
Cost: $5 with RSVP

Kill All Hipsters

DIW magazine is throwing down tonight at the always intersting Scenic. There DJ talent (ironically) runs the gambit of hipster sounds from dance to rock to... um... dance rock? On the notables list is FreeNYC favorite Cocoa Cracker Brown (of Nublu) who will most likely avoid the Top 40 / Dimmak style and bring some rare treats. Danny Le Nimh closes the night with a set of heavy, sweaty tracks to keep you until closing. Raspberry Jones, Lady Duplex, and Mach Man Andy Savage fill out the night.

Listen to a Danny Le Nimh DJ set live at Donkey (mp3)

Date: Wednesday, November 30th
Time: 9:00pm
Location: Scenic (25 Avenue B)
Cost: Free

Nouveau

While I am at the Lady Sovereign show tonight (which is definitely not free so we are not allowed to discuss her), you may be wondering what to do with yourself this fine evening. How 'bout the Nouveau party with Larry Tee, Shaun Slaughter and DJ Jess. Plus if you wanna throw some back this hump day you got $1 PBR from 10 'til 11 and free jello shots. And as Mr. Cosby would say, there is always room for jello.

Date: Wednesday, november 30th
Time: 10pm
Venue: Fat Baby, 112 Rivington
Cost: Free

Lion1Music Release Party with MKL

Lion1Music label owner MKL is making a special appearance on the tables tonight at the always chill Opus 22. His style draws an obvious comparison to the more detailed side of NYC house (think Turntables on the Hudson, Body and Soul, Giant Step, etc) combining house beats, breaks, tribal percussion, dub poetry, and live instrumentation to create a warm and welcome sound that fairs as well relaxing in the lounge as it does on the dancefloor at two in the morning. He's joined by Go Kiryu and Shan Boogie tonight. Open vodka bar from 10-11 gets you going early.

Listen to MKL's "Its Me" Mix (Real Audio)

Date: Wednesday, November 30th
Time: 10:00pm
Location: Opus22 (559 W 22nd St at 11th Ave)
Cost: Free
