Walk the Tunnel

freeNYC_walktheTunnel.gif

"On the morning of Saturday October 15th, thousands of New Yorkers will be walking through the Lincoln Tunnel. Fresh air will be pumped into the tunnel and cars diverted to the other tubes. Public transport will be available to bring walkers back. The tunnel is just under 2 miles long, so it should take less than an hour. Walk-The-Tunnel is a once in a lifetime opportunity — for New York City history lovers, engineering buffs, those who like unusual events, or those just curious about the world's greatest city's hidden underside. It is also for people who care about ending AIDS, once and for all. Walk-The-Tunnel marks the first day of a march from New York City to Washington, DC, part of the The Campaign To End AIDS (C2EA). Hundreds of people concerned about HIV/AIDS will be walking for three weeks, from the Lincoln Tunnel to the Lincoln Memorial. At the same time, car and van caravans will be winding their way across the country from 8 other locations, converging on the nation's capital for a week of activism. These courageous activists have invited all New Yorkers to join them for the kick off of their historic walk."

Date: Saturday, October 15th
Time: 7:30am (kick off party)
Location: Meet in Times Square
Cost: Free

The MP3 Experiment

mp3logo1small.jpg

I am always excited when someone takes the initiative to create a unique experience in New York City (that's what being here is all about, right). And I am not talking about bringing a really cool dj to a really cool new bar. I am talking about you won't find anywhere else on the planet and - perhaps - something that will not happen here again for a while.

Enter Improv Everywhere; a group of individuals dedicated to bringing improptu events and performances to public spaces such as "No Pants 2K5" where everyone on the subway car was (duh?) without pants. Well, rain be damned, today is their next public extravaganza. Titled The MP3 Experiment 2.0, Improve Everywhere is inviting you to join in the fun. Here's what you need to do...

Go to the website. Download the mp3. Load it into your mp3 player of choice (if you are reading this website, you probably have an iPod but may be considering buying a nano for this special occasion because "everyone is going to have iPods." Mine's broken so I rock a CD player... sorry, I'm bitter... back to the saga). Okay, don't be lame and listen to it ahead of time. That is going to take all the fun away.

Now, Show up at Sheep Meadow and be there by 3pm. Sit on the lawn (important... bring something to sit on as it will still be soaked). There will be a guy with a siren. Once you hear the siren, get your mp3 player of choice fired up. when you here the siren again... hit play and follow the instructions. Madness is guaranteed to ensue.

Since we have been engulfed in Monsoon Manhattan for the past week, the rain date for this event is Sunday and you can check the site today as they will post a "good to go" message by 1pm. Enjoy!

Date: Saturday, October 15th
Time: 3:00pm (prompt)
Location: Sheep Meadow, Central Park (Enter the [ark at 72nd St and Central Park West. Go south. Sheep Meadow is located on the east side of the West Drive at 67th St)
Cost: Free

Biskup + Dalek + Plankton = Damn Good Art

ouchybunny.jpg.jpeg

Okay, I promise this is my last art post for the weekend. And I'll be quick as these guys need no introduction to FreeNYC fans.

In a continued effort to present amazing combination openings, the Jonathan Levine Gallery is presenting new works by Tim Biskup, Dalek, and Plankton all in one night. This is like an east coast / west coast art clash at its best as each artist brings his unique, illustrative characters to the canvas. Check the site for full info if you have no idea what I am talking about.

Date: Satruday, October 15th
Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: Jonathan Levine Gallery (529 West 20th Street, 9E)
Cost: Free

All Year I Dream About Adidas

In case you were wondering, the Adidas store has been calling Wooster Street home for a whole year now. You may be asking yourself, "Why is she telling me this?" Well kids, our friends over at Adidas are throwing themselves a lil one year anniversary party, and its sounding like a pretty good time. Papaya King is providing the food (yay hotdogs!) and beverages will be courtesy of Dos Equis, Skyy Vodka and 1800 Tequila! (So if any of you see me there do NOT let me drink too much Tequila!) And topping off the party, is DJ Cosmo, from The Rub, on music.

Date: Saturday, October 15th
Time: 6pm -10pm
Venue: Adidas Store, 136 Wooster Street
Cost: Free

So Rad

jex.jpg

Paper Rad
are awesome. Its kind of like what would happen if a zine with rabies was using mac paint and BASIC to create art? Don't believe, check the site. This shit is like Q-Bert on acid. I love it. Best of all they have no contained the madness (genious) to a bound book. Imagine that... all that wild art tamed with simple glue.

Tonight the Paper Rad crew are going to DJ and "perform live" for the book launch after their signing at Printed Matter (5-7). So come down, listen to the crazyness and image what it is like to be inside their heads.

Date: Saturday, October 15th
Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Location: EAI, 535 West 22nd Street, 5th Floor
Cost: Free
