Dorothy Parker was the only female founding member of the famous Algonquin Round Table, a literary circle home to other writers such as Robert Sherwood and James Thurber. She wrote things like this:
Razors pain you; Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you; And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful; Nooses give;
Gas smells awful; You might as well live.
That’s why they’re havin’ a scavenger hunt (because we've put the razors down and we're all alive)! At 5 pm everyone who participates rounds back up at the Algonquin to drink a lot and find out who won. So even if you're not much of a Parker fan, there's drinking involved, and that always makes scavenger hunts extra worthwhile. [swiped from NewRelease]
Date: Sunday, October 2 Time: 1:30 pm Venue: it begins in the Algonquin Hotel Lobby (59 w. 44th St. btw. 5th and 6th avenues) Cost: Free
Being: The culmination of years of hard labor and brutal ritual, the final push that will get the runway done, the ancestors pleased, the planes back, and deliver to us the abundant cargo that we so, so deserve; featuring: merchant marines, brazen brass, exceedingly clever flying machines, cardboard communication, synchronized semaphore, lighthouses, ropework, Melanesia, control towers, morse code, dazzling displays of ritual dance, arbitrary and capricious blood letting, sacred Jello, red crosses, gigantic, gimpy John Frum, sea chanteys, and your helping hands when they are needed the most.
Beware of swashbuckling pirates, unsympathetic Red Cross workers, and John Frum. If you follow the signs and complete the ritual, you will be amply rewarded for your faith. "Kelly Slusher plays music to heal the hearts of the broken and soothe the souls of the lonely. She stands somewhere in between the hauntingly beautiful voice of Julee Cruise and the influential, early indie pop groups such as The Clean, The Go-Betweens and The Vaselines."
So I have never actually watched Gummo because I'm scared of the multitude of dead cats that appear in the movie, but I hear its quite good. Check out a free screening tonight at Flux Factory.
Concrescesnce is a combination of live acoustic instruments melding with electronic ones "that can slip into the back of your head or occupy your entire consciousness." A cop out comparison would be Sound Tribe Selector 9 but the diverse musicians here swing a much wider gambit from IDM to Folk. Music is coupled with live visual creating a great way to lay back and ease into the end of the weekend.

The first in this season's Women Poets at Barnard College reading series features Carolyn Forche and Honor Moore.
“The hunger to know” in Carolyn Forché’s most recent book, The Blue Hour (2004), “is matched here by a desire to be new, totally without cynicism, open to the shocks of experience as if perpetually for the first time” (Robert Boyers). Her debut collection, Gathering of the Tribes (1976), won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award.
Honor Moore’s new book of poems, Red Shoes (2005), a series of meditations and elegies, is “a searing exploration of exposure, as the concept impacts all stages of human life and also death” (Jorie Graham). She is a 2004 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and is at work on The Bishop’s Daughter, a memoir.

Current TV is this new cable network sort of in the vein of Name Your Own Adventure, well at least in the sense that you are both viewer and producer. "Reflex: A Vik Muniz Primer (Aperture, September 2005) takes us on a guided tour of the inner workings of artist Vik Muniz’s pyrotechnic imagination. Walking us through each of his major series, Muniz reveals himself as a brilliant writer as well as image-maker. In each chapter, Muniz tickles our minds with amusing anecdotes detailing his working method and unveiling the thinking and historical influences behind his images. His own images explore all possible materials and modes of making photographs, while at the same time making us think about how perception works and what happens in pictures. This book secures Muniz’s role as trickster and philosopher as well as creator of compelling, delightful images." Tonight Muniz speaks and signs.

It took me a while to find some info on this one but it seems that there is a new party at Happy Ending called Maxi-Mal on the first Thursday of the month. The keywords are right up our alley these days (industrial, NRG, acid breaks, freestyle and italo eclectro) and the 2 hr open bar from 10-12 and the giveaways from Lucky Jeans makes it a worth one to check out. Thursdays in NYC have been slacking lately... maybe this is the party to fire this town back up. DJ bio's after the fold curtesy of Repellentzine.

Showing no concern for established dance music boundaries, Brennan Green has become one of the most talented, innovative and prolific producers today. His releases and remixes run the gamut from deep house to minimal electro and italo disco. Not content with confining his talents solely to the studio, Green brings his music directly to the people via the turntables. His DJ repertoire includes not only mixing, but cutting and beat-juggling as well. Upon arriving in NYC from Toronto, Green cut his teeth with the Downstreamers 12" on John Selway's minimal house label CSM. Subsequently, he befriended disco cult hero Daniel Wang and teamed up for a slew of remix productions, among them the infamous Block 16 on Wang's seminal Balihu imprint. Through a regular spot at the Play NYC parties, Green helped pioneer the current deep disco sound. His "Pop Your Funk" party, at meatpacking district dancespot APT, gave Brennan the chance to really display his DJ chops, holding his own among legends like Andrew Weatherall [Two Lone Swordsmen] , Sal Principato [Liquid Liquid], Martin Moscrop [A Certain Ratio], Maurice Fulton [Mu] and Steve Kotey [Chicken Lips]. Recovering from his first bout of serious touring, which included dates around the US, and some globetrotting to Australia and Japan, Green is currently producing and working A&R for Modal Records. He's also in the process of launching his own musical footprint, Chinatown. Expect more of his trademark production, i.e. vibrant instrumentation, atypical beats, and quirky, irresistible
melodies. Brennan Green's past credits include releases and remixes on John Selway's CSM, Balihu, Bear Funk, Francois K's esteemed Wave Music, Hans Peter Lindstrom's Feedelity, Peacefrog, Paper, Nuphonic, Output, CoCo Machete, Romklang, Rushhour, Maya, Courtsquare, Electrik Soul, Mood Music, Icon, and Truffle.
Direct from Vienna, Hannes Baumann brings the secrets of his successful Icke Micke party to the streets of New York. The list of artists that this king of the Viennese scene [alongside partner Tibcurl] have hosted reads like a who's who of current techno and house superstars - DJ Koze, Andrew Weatherall, Apparat, Jennifer Cardini, Luciano, Christopher Just, g.rizo, Justus Kohncke, Mooner, Mu, Patrick Pulsinger, and T. Raumschmiere, to name just a few. Along the way, Baumann learned what it takes to seriously rock the dancefloor, and carry a party into uncharted, deep and sexy territory.
Who goes to South Street Seaport for lunch? Let along get dressed for carnival? But, if you are in the area this afternoon then check out the South Street Seaport Rio-esque carnival (the "esque" is because Bloomberg would never let anything close to an authentic carnival go down) with live music and giveaways. They are even giving away a car and $5000 for those dressed for the occasion
Date: Friday, October 7th Time: 12:30pm - 2:00pm Location: South Street Seaport (Fulton Street at the East River) Cost: Free
I have to admit that we have been light on art events over the past few days. September is kind of like back to school time for the galleries so everything was live and fresh then. Most of that stuff is still up so look through the archives and - if you have not done so already - check out the exhibits by Gary Baseman, Miss Van,Marcel Dzama (all three end Saturday), or Lauri Anderson while they are still up.
But tonight my eye was caught by a 14 minutes video piece, Sodium Fox by Jeremy Blake which examines "internal and external landscapes as similar vessels for subjectivity." The visuals look stunning and the soundtrack is intriguingly created by a Nashville poet/musician named David Berman. While unfamiliar with Blakes work, the press release promises that he creates "formal inventions with a unique and deeply psychological exploration of Pop portraiture." May be worth a visit.
Date: Friday, October 7th Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm Location: Feigen Contemporary Gallery (535 West 20th Street) Cost: Free

Milk and cookies will be served.

Every once and a while there is an event that makes me love New York City. Take this for example...
Start with the Whitney, which is showing a fantastic photographic exhibit portraying the effects of the construction industy on the American landscape. Next add DJ Spooky, the genre-free NY native who's turntables are more aligned with delivering deep narratives of hazy beats rather thank epic dance-floor peaks. Now put them together and you have my ideal transition from work week to week end. I mean, I have no idea what its going to soundlike but sometimes you just trust a DJ.
As part of the pay-what-you-wish Friday evening Whitney Live series, DJ Spooky will joint "avant-rock trio PRINT" and "brass collective Tilt" to recast works from experimental modernist composers - and electronic music pioneers - Edgar Varèse, Carl Ruggles, and Carlos Salzedo (International Composers Guild).
Date: Friday, October 7th Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm Location: Whitney Museum of American Art (Madison Ave between 74th and 75th) Cost: Pay-what-you-wish (begins at 6:00pm)
As if there aren't enough things dissauding you from going into the city tonight, like bomb threats, the sketchy L train, and hordes of NYU kids, Savalas is trying to keep you out in the 'Burg with their party, Zero Transportation. Brought to you by DJs Brian Beck, Michael Elkind, Paul Rocha, and this week's guest DJ, Vito, from The Rapture. Now, I haven't been to this one yet but "Zero Transportation supports music that will send you stumbling home - on foot - at 4am" and that is something I'm very much in favor of (plus I really liked their flyer).
Every year as the chill comes back to the air, I tend to notice the considerable beer gut I have built up during an entire summer of binge drinking at BBQs. Every weekend I say "this weekend I'm staying in" but then Friday rolls around and out I go. So its looking like I'm going to have to put off sobriety for another weekend as FreeNYC's favorite party returns tonight. Cut is back! At least once a month I have a conversation with a friend about starting our own tee shirt line. About half of those times I am the one that brings it up. All that really ever happens though, is that someone buys a bunch of equiptment, maybe makes that one shirt, and never picks it up again.
So I have to give it up to the guys over at I-Manifest who have managed to build a growing product out of the rest of our whims. On top of being conscious (sweatshop-free tees), and well crafted (each screen is hand pulled), the design voice is well beyond the usual illustrative mimicry and obligatory skull print.
Tonight they are opening their studio for burgers and beers so stop by and ask them all your burning questions about how to do it yourself.

I usually have a rule that if you can not maintain your own site then I really can't reference your event. But it is another slow Monday so we are going to cut the Latin Collector Gallery some slack even though they have not updated since July.
They are having a photo exhibit and auction this week to raise some funds for Katrina relif. I am unfamiliar with most of their huge laundry list of photographers (see above) but this may be a good way to see some new work and support a good cause. The auction and reception are Wednesday from 6-9.

Tonight Burtynsky talks about his current exhibit on view at the Charles Cowles Gallery (537 West 24th Street between 10th and 11th).

Tonight see Lexi Leban and Lidia Szajko's award-winning documentary, Girl Trouble. The film shows "the disastrous consequences of poverty, domesetic violence, drug addictions, and homelessness" for teenage girls today who have ended up in the juvenile justice system. Seems like girl trouble to me. Not only will you get a critical look at the the juvenile justice system through the documentary lens of Leban and Szajko, but you'll also get to hear Stephanie Sabini and Marlene Sanchez from the the Center for Young Women's Development talk about girl trouble.

Continuing my "a man's got to drink" posting mentality from yesterday, I need to tell you about this sweet flowing Jameson Whiskey open bar. The Onion magazine is bringing a tastier than usual open bar for the afterwork crowd today to the upper east side - a part of New York I usually reserve purely for doctors visits. Beyond that, I have no idea what to expect out of this one. Open bar from 7 until it runs out.

Usually when we write about Triple Five Soul it's cause they are throwin' some sort of drunken hip hop/dj/party night at a bar, but alas, this time we are actually talking about clothes. If you need to stock up on your collection of hoodies, sweaters and cords for the fall stop by the T5S sample sale. While it's not that cheap, its certainly cheaper than retail prices. If you don't have time in your busy schedule to stop by today, no worries, they have set up camp until October 24th.

Ricky Powell says the first photo he ever had published was "FUTURA 2000 and Keith Haring hangin’ at some opening in June of ’85. It was in The East Village Eye, for the party people section in the back. It was only about two by two inches but my photo credit lookdeded dope! I was like, “Oh Sssit! Even a lazy bum like me can do something worthwhile.” Now, 20 years later, he "has prowled the streets of his native New York, toured the world with hip hop’s biggest acts, and full-on crashed celebrity-studded parties on both coasts. Equipped with only his wits and an instamatic camera, Powell elbowed his way into the center of the scene with no shame." In honor of their new release, Ricky Powell Photographs 1985–2005, powerHouse books has set up an exhibit of Powell's photography. The opening reception is tonight, but the show will be up until November 11th.
Date: Thursday, October 13th Time: 7pm - 9pm Location: The powerHouse Gallery, 68 Charlton Street Cost: Free with RSVP
Me Magazine is a pretty interesting concept. Each issue is dedicated to one person (except this one, which is a team) and all of the people in their lives. The second issue - and only one that has ever graced my inbox - was all about Miho Aoki from United Bamboo and it was actually pretty interested to get the full insite into someone's life rather then the usual rewritten one sheet. All of this, of course, has nothing to do - really - with the fact that they are having a launch party for issue #5 (the Rivington Arms issue) tonight. Open Red Stripe from 9 - 11.
Date: Thursday, October 13th Time: 9:00pm Location: Happy endings (302 Broome Street) Cost: Free with RSVP

"Deitch Projects is pleased to present installationview, an immersive installation of new works by Ryan McGinness. The exhibition is an environment of wall paintings punctuated by numerous two-sided circular discs of various sizes. McGinness has titled these new pieces “universals” in reference to the contained universes they represent and the iconic universal language for which McGinness is best known. The flat graphic worlds within each universal take the viewer into various scale-shifting landscapes and transform the gallery into a playful candy-like cosmos with these slick, brightly colored works." Tonight is the opening reception, but the show will be up until November 5th.
Date: Friday, October 14th Time: 6pm - 9pm Venue: Deitch Gallery, 76 Grand St Cost: Free
"For his exhibition at Invisible NYC, Mr. Howard employs recognizable, painted images and icons from various mass-produced publications and advertisements, merged with his own fantastical characters and symbols. The result is a dream-like world comprised of popular images and imaginary creatures. He re-interprets familiar objects through his use of dazzling and dizzying combinations of pattern and vibrant color, recalling large billboard and neon advertisements. The work is a forceful carnival of images, colors, motifs and symbols. The result is pleasing, yet somewhat absurd. The compositions unconventional."
Joshua Abram Howard was born in Seattle Washington and currently resides in Queens, New York. After graduating in 2003 from the Pratt Institute with a BFA in drawing, he was chosen to attend the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Mr. Howard’s art combines childhood experiences, through his use of electric color and playful subject, with biting commentary on contemporary art and culture. He states:
“It’s a struggle to make something new, like finding something novel and interesting in a junk draw. I want my work to reflect the problems I encounter in making something new. My drawings are based on objects, and images that I have had an ongoing relationship with. Some of the objects/images have been with me since my childhood, while others I have picked up on the way. Totems inspire me. They reuse a system of symbols to make something that is customized. I combine familiar objects to try to create a potent representation of myself and the society that I belong to.”
Eight months ago, a team of seven artists and ten crewmembers left Argentina in seach of a rare species rumored to live on an unnamed island in teh Polar Antartic Circle. The entire adventure was documented on film and will be "reproduced" tonight in Central Park.
"A Journey That Wasn’t is an orchestral musical in Central Park based on this journey to Antarctica. Using ice, atmosphere, light, and an original score - written by composer Joshua Cody and performed live on the ice by a symphonic orchestra [artist Pierre{ Huyghe will transform the distant island in Antarctica into musical form. New York-based composer and guitarist Elliott Sharp will be a featured soloist and musical collaborator on the project."
Oh, one more thing... The whole thing will documented as part of this ongoing process. Spectators are invited to sit and watch as the 30 minute film is played three times in a row with subtle pauses to reshoot. Both the audience and the performance will be filmed. Audience members are encourage to wear dark and neutral tones.

Tonight is the launch party for "The Plain of Heaven" with free Pabst and DJ Jonny Cragg. I can't really start to explain this one because there is so much stuff going on but the team over at Creative Time has put together an international art exhibition inspired by the impending redevelopment of the High Line, the disused elevated rail structure that runs up the west side of Manhattan.
“The Plain of Heaven” takes off from this elegiac and exciting moment of transformation to consider how we imagine, and long for, inaccessible spaces; the relationships between transfiguration, destruction and rebirth; the opposition between nature and the urban environment; and more generally, the way in which we re-mystify the world we already know." Check the site for more info, artist talks, and more.
Date: Friday, October 14th Time: 8:00pm - 10:00pm Location: Courtyard at 832 Washington Street Cost: Free
We Care A Lot (less) returns to Luke and Leroy tonight but I'm not sure they actually still care. This was my first tip off... "but this time, we actually care a lot less about pretty much everything, except the guests." So yeah that part is true, they do care about the music as they've got TOK TOK, MICHA KLANG and residents Dirty Jean and Cowboy Mark for the night. There will also be an open bar for an hour at some point in the night, but they don't care to tell us when. And they are also being a lil vague on the whole cover charge thing, so you just may want to keep a couple bucks in your pocket.
Date: Friday, October 14th Time: 11pm Venue: Luke and Leroy, 21 7th Ave Cost: Free (maybe)

"On the morning of Saturday October 15th, thousands of New Yorkers will be walking through the Lincoln Tunnel. Fresh air will be pumped into the tunnel and cars diverted to the other tubes. Public transport will be available to bring walkers back. The tunnel is just under 2 miles long, so it should take less than an hour. Walk-The-Tunnel is a once in a lifetime opportunity — for New York City history lovers, engineering buffs, those who like unusual events, or those just curious about the world's greatest city's hidden underside. It is also for people who care about ending AIDS, once and for all. Walk-The-Tunnel marks the first day of a march from New York City to Washington, DC, part of the The Campaign To End AIDS (C2EA). Hundreds of people concerned about HIV/AIDS will be walking for three weeks, from the Lincoln Tunnel to the Lincoln Memorial. At the same time, car and van caravans will be winding their way across the country from 8 other locations, converging on the nation's capital for a week of activism. These courageous activists have invited all New Yorkers to join them for the kick off of their historic walk."

I am always excited when someone takes the initiative to create a unique experience in New York City (that's what being here is all about, right). And I am not talking about bringing a really cool dj to a really cool new bar. I am talking about you won't find anywhere else on the planet and - perhaps - something that will not happen here again for a while.
Enter Improv Everywhere; a group of individuals dedicated to bringing improptu events and performances to public spaces such as "No Pants 2K5" where everyone on the subway car was (duh?) without pants. Well, rain be damned, today is their next public extravaganza. Titled The MP3 Experiment 2.0, Improve Everywhere is inviting you to join in the fun. Here's what you need to do...
Go to the website. Download the mp3. Load it into your mp3 player of choice (if you are reading this website, you probably have an iPod but may be considering buying a nano for this special occasion because "everyone is going to have iPods." Mine's broken so I rock a CD player... sorry, I'm bitter... back to the saga). Okay, don't be lame and listen to it ahead of time. That is going to take all the fun away.
Now, Show up at Sheep Meadow and be there by 3pm. Sit on the lawn (important... bring something to sit on as it will still be soaked). There will be a guy with a siren. Once you hear the siren, get your mp3 player of choice fired up. when you here the siren again... hit play and follow the instructions. Madness is guaranteed to ensue.
Since we have been engulfed in Monsoon Manhattan for the past week, the rain date for this event is Sunday and you can check the site today as they will post a "good to go" message by 1pm. Enjoy!
Date: Saturday, October 15th Time: 3:00pm (prompt) Location: Sheep Meadow, Central Park (Enter the [ark at 72nd St and Central Park West. Go south. Sheep Meadow is located on the east side of the West Drive at 67th St) Cost: Free

In a continued effort to present amazing combination openings, the Jonathan Levine Gallery is presenting new works by Tim Biskup, Dalek, and Plankton all in one night. Check the site for full info if you have no idea what I am talking about.
Date: Satruday, October 15th Time: 6:00pm - 9:00pm Location: Jonathan Levine Gallery (529 West 20th Street, 9E) Cost: Free
In case you were wondering, the Adidas store has been calling Wooster Street home for a whole year now. You may be asking yourself, "Why is she telling me this?" Well kids, our friends over at Adidas are throwing themselves a lil one year anniversary party, and its sounding like a pretty good time. Papaya King is providing the food (yay hotdogs!) and beverages will be courtesy of Dos Equis, Skyy Vodka and 1800 Tequila! (So if any of you see me there do NOT let me drink too much Tequila!) And topping off the party, is DJ Cosmo, from The Rub, on music.

Paper Rad are awesome. Its kind of like what would happen if a zine with rabies was using mac paint and BASIC to create art? Don't believe, check the site. This shit is like Q-Bert on acid. I love it. Best of all they have no contained the madness (genious) to a bound book. Imagine that... all that wild art tamed with simple glue.

I apoligize on this one, as round 1, the main event, was last night, and I didn't get it up in time. Postcards from the Edge is an AIDS benefit in which over 1400 postcard-sized works of art by renowned and emerging artists displayed anonymously and sold for $50 each. You could end up with a card from Sol Lewitt or some sloppy kid from Pratt. No one knows because the names are on the back. So you really have to trust your taste and buy what you like. Or just come and check it out for free and hopefully they will have free cocktails. Buy five cards and get one free. Proceeds benefit Visual AIDS. Continues Tuesday.

In case you haven't noticed, FreeNYC is a big fan of Blockhead and his first cd, Music By Cavelight, so we're real excited about his new album, Downtown Science. Tonight, swing by The Delancy for his record release party. Its two bucks to get in, but there are two-for-one drinks for a couple of hours, and you got DJ Omega One, DJ Synapse and DJ Colab spinning records. So go down and show some support. Plus, the last I heard, Blockhead was looking for some good rockstar-esque groupies!
Date: Monday, October 17th Time: 8pm Venue: The Delancy, 168 Delancey St Cost: $2
Ok, ok, so I know we write about this party every week, but this time, Philly is all over the place, and you know I cant help but talk about Philly. So on the line up tonight is Philadelphia native and Brooklyn resident, Cosmo Baker followed up by one half of the Hollertronix duo, Low Budget. Now if we could only get them to actually serve cheese steaks.
Date: Monday, October 17th Time: 11pm - 4am Venue: Sway, 305 Spring St Cost: Free
Who’s listening? Who’s talking? with Catherine McCoy
The Global Issues in Design & Visuality series continues with graphic design guru and personal hero Catherine McCoy. McCoy was one of t he founders of the American post-structuralism movement in the US as the head of the graphic design program at Cranbrook. "McCoy argues that designers need new strategies to navigate between their own culture and the heterogeneous audiences they serve. She examines the legacy of modernism in the context of corporate globalism and makes the case—not for abandoning the history and conventions of design—but for evolving what she calls “a more open architecture, to effectively incorporate cultural human factors that respond to diversity, multiplicity and flux.”
Date: Tuesday, October 18th Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm Location: Parsons, Tishman Auditorium (66 West 12th St.) Cost: Free
You know the saying "once you pop, you can't stop," well, at times, this saying also applies to my tequila drinking practices. If you suffer from a similar affliction, than you may want to check out the private Rolling Stone Cuervo Party. Come by, have a drink and hear The Sights play.
Date: Tuesday, October 18th Time: 7pm - 11pm Venue: Canal Room, 285 W Broadway Cost: Free with RSVP
Anyone who throws a Mike Giant illustration on their flier gets me excited about their party. So when its NYC street staple Mass Appeal... well... you know its gonna be a good time. FreeNYC fav DJ Synapse holds down the tables while Seagrams provides social lube. This is either an early night out or a late day in the office... you be the judge.
Date: Tuesday, October 18th Time: 8:00pm Location: Kabin (94 2nd ave between 5th and 6th) Cost: Free
Unless you have been under a rock in NYC for the last year, you most likely have been in the same room with Bronques, a man whom I envy if only for his ability to get sloppy, drunken girls to get naked for photos. Celebrate his love for the hipster underbelly tonight as the LNP gallery presents a gallery of his last year of adventures. Open Svedka Bar. There is also an afterparty at Happy Ending so click on the flyer for full info.
NOTE: Today is the RSVP deadline (please respond by 4pm). This party takes place on Thursday at 7pm
Triple 5 Soul keeps banging out these artist colab. projects at their Williamsburg location. This time they have teamed up with Maya Hayuk whose soft, ornate illustrative style is unjustified by the flyer above. Tomorrow they are having an obligatory throw down for the project with free bacardi and music by Prefuse 73 and Roxy Pain. You must, however, RSVP by 4pm today in order to get in. Expect the usual crowd of scenesters climbing over one another for free drinks. Prefuse is a great DJ though so he's worth the trip. Info below is for the day of the event.
Date: Thursday, October 20th Time: 7:00pm - 10:00pm Location: T5S Brooklyn (145 Bedford at North 9th, Williamsburg) Cost: Free with RSVP
Heeb, the "New Jew Review," is celebrating the release of their sex issue tonight with a little balagon at 6's and 8's. There's an early open bar from 9-10 and DJs Omega 1, Captain Planet and Japanster will be playing all night as well as VJs and projections. I know my shaygetz a$$ will be in attendance to peep the heeb hotties and - for the ladies - maybe you can finally find that nice Jewish boy that your mother has been nagging you about.
Date: Wednesday, October 19th Time: 9:00pm Location: 6's and 8's (205 Chrystie Street at Stanton) Cost: Free
The Urb Crew is throwing their B-Sides series again tonight at the swanky Joe's Pub... my favorite place to see a show when they do not demand a two drink (about $15 by Joe's standards) minimum. Hopefully the formalities will be set aside tonight since there will be some sort of undisclosed open bar. Regardless, you should roll through just to see J-Live who's flow draws parallels to the Quannum crew (think Gif of Gab or Lyrics Born) but with a New York gritty city edge. Kev Brown, Big Tone, & DJ Center join in. It's gonna be a late night.
No, I'm not talking about the state of the music played on the radio, I'm talking about the band. I saw these guys a couple years back at Irving Plaza for some suicide prevention show that also featured Le Tigre and Northern State (don't laugh!). Now, if my memory serves me correctly (and there is a good chance it doesn't) I.N.C. preformed in typical rock star fashion, climbing things, jumping off things and throwing instruments around. Anyway, the point is, they will be at Virgin today signing and playing songs from their new album, Armed Love.
Date: Thursday, October 20th Time: 6pm Venue: Virgin Mega Store, Union Square and 14th Cost: Free
"Reknowned Israeli architect Ada Karmi-Melemedi presents her work, focusing on architecture in the public realm. This is kind of psychogeography on a huge scale. Transio_NYC is a 40 minute video loop of street life in Nanning and Shanghai, China, being projected billboard style on the streets of NYC. The larger life of this project, Solange Fabião, is dedicated to a sort of cross parallel examination of modern city life. The loop can be seen on the corner of Canal and Centre through the end of the month. Tonight is the opening party at the Storefront for Art and Architecture.

The Oxycottontail crew, providers of great staple parties such as the Monday night Sway parties, is starting a new Thursday at (ack!) Glo. Two of the hippest DJs around - Mark Ronson and DJ Jus Ske - provide the backdrop and, judging by the flyer, there should be some sort of open bar (no promises). Expect a packed, sweaty scene.

The My Little Pony was a staple in my life as a little girl in the 80s. We're talking ponies here people, and lots of them, plus castles and stables and tiny litle pony maine brushes. Well its good to know that other people share in my nostalgia as The Pony Project opens tonight.
"Hasbro has invited a group of talented women to transform oversized versions of this iconic toy into works of art. Each artist will receive an 18 inch tall blank My Little Pony figure. Using their creativity, the artists are being challenged to customize these figures from their own perspectives. Finally... finally someone is bringing a new party to the weekends. All too often I get wind of another hot Tuesday or Thursday party to get excited about. Sooner or later, though, the weekend rolls around, the "What should I do tonight?" emails start pouring in, and more often then not I'm left with the same old drunken bars or massive clubs as a solution.
But tonight there's a new late night deep house party in town to keep you dancing all night without the mess, hassle, and door charge of the city's larger venues. Marlon D and Jellybean Benittez - who have been bringing deep house to NYC since the Paradise Garage and Studio 54 days - are launching a new party tonight aptly titled Ain't Nothin' But A House Party. All I can say is its about #%¡¢#ing time. Join them is special guest Louis "Lou" Gorbea who is more than qualified to share the decks with these legends. This new weekly is poised to pack the Union Square Ballroom with people sweating from the rafter until sunrise.

Giant Robot - one of NYC favorite purveyors of cool toys, books, and art "stuff" - has compiled an exhibit of 20 of their favorite comic artists. Included in the line-up is is FreeNYC favorite David Choe amongst many talented others. We are admittedly not very versed in comics because we spend all our time writing for this website. Tonight is a good chance to change that. Continues through November 16th.

Sweat is one of my favorite parties in NYC simply because rather than bring in one talented DJ and lots of filler they pack two rooms with amazing DJs all night long. Usually, however, we can't really talk about it on FreeNYC because the cover charge falls out of our "nothing over $5 range."
But when Mr. Choimatic - one half of Robots in a Coma with the equally talented Chasekillz - sent me over the lineup this month, I knew something had to be done. I mean... really... how often do you get a chance to see Baltimore/DC's Tittsworth & Dave Nada rip up a DJ AND Live PA set? This is going to be one of those good time get downs that we love when our fav's like Scottie B or K-Swift come to town.
So what we have done for you - our beloved FreeNYC community - is struck a little deal. You can get our our special FreeNYC list for a reduced reduced entry cost of only $5. And with an open Bacardi bar from 10:30-11:30 your cover will balanced out with your first free drink! It's just our way of keeping those NYC financial barriers at bay. RSVP here and I'll see you Saturday!
Date: Satruday, October 22nd Time: 10:00pm Location: 6s & 8s (205 Chrystie Street at Stanton) Cost: $10, $8 with flyer, $5 with FreeNYC RSVP!

This kind of stuff only happens in New York.. "Times Square Alliance is proud to present the first annual Times Square Dog Day Masquerade. This special event will show off the dogs of the city (and beyond!) in costumes that evoke Times Square past and present. Dogs will compete in three categories: Historical Hounds (costumes featuring historical figures from Times Square such as the VJ Day Sailor and Nurse, Ladies of the night or a street preacher); Current Canine Characters (current characters that populate Times Square like the Naked Cowboy, tourists or New Years Eve celebrants); and Broadway Bow-Wows (Broadway diva dogs and other theatre impresarios and characters such as Billy Flynn, Phantom of the Opera, or Cats)." See site for full info.

"School of Visual Arts (SVA) honors Heinz Edelmann, one of the leading art directors, illustrators and designers of our time, with its Masters Series Award and retrospective exhibition. Every year, SVA bestows the award to a groundbreaking visual artist, designer, photographer or illustrator who, over the course of his/her career, has been recognized as a great visual communicator.
The exhibition will include over 100 posters, screen prints, magazine spreads, book designs, animations and comic books spanning Edelmann’s prolific career. His work is internationally known, and he has been actively working in Germany, England and the Netherlands since the late ‘50s, doing design, illustration, advertising and animation. Unlike many designers working today, Edelmann has never made a clear distinction between the role of the designer and the role of the illustrator, and the majority of his designs for books, magazines and posters use his own illustrations. He was always a solo operation with no assistants, and was able to create a new technique or style for each job, depending upon its needs. 'I was always a one-man band' says Edelmann, 'I was my own art director, illustrator, designer and paster-uper and I also swept the floor and made the coffee.'”

So I have no idea about this one. I don't know Scale, their space, or what their film and video work is all about. I am guessing they are some sort of design studio. I do know that Kudu is playing and they are a hella good dance band. I also know that there is some serious DJ talent and free Brahma Beer. I am assuming that there will be good video projections as well.

She is actually best known for her decades of work with chimpanzees and baboons, but today she is droppin knowlegde not about the state of the animal kingdom, but of human society and the way we produce and consume in hopes of achieving a more sustainable world. In her latest book, Harvet For Hope, she outlines some of where western society has gone wrong and how we can creat positive change.

Stealing words I'm feeling (from Contested Terrain)... "We have just received word that the moment we have been dreading has arrived: 2,000 U.S. servicepeople have now died in Iraq. We grieve for these two thousand men and women, killed in the prime of their lives, for a war based on lies, and we grieve for the tens of thousands of Iraqis who have also died in the chaos and carnage the Bush Administration has brought to their country. It's time to bring the troops home -- now. Not one more U.S. serviceperson should give his or her life to this senseless war. Not one more Iraqi should be killed. Not one more U.S. dollar should be spent sustaining this war and occupation."
"CNN has just reported grim news: 2,000 Americans soldiers have now died in Iraq. Join veterans, military families and United for Peace and Justice-NYC for a solemn vigil. Bring flowers to lay on the doorstep of the Recruiting Center and banners and signs."

Every once in a while, NYU does something really cool. Today they are hosting Handheld, a sort of lecture/exhibition on experimental uses of handheld technology. The event will feature Haeyoung Kim (bubblyfish) who will perform 8-bit symphonies on Game Boy with visual accompanyment, c.h.i.a.k.i who will present low fi 8-bit visuals created out of Ninetendo, and Family Filter who's simpleTEXT program creates music out of audience supplied text messages.
Most important to me, as I was out of town a few weeks back, is the fact that Improv Everywhere will be on hand with another MP3 Experiment. For those of you who missed out on the rainy park fun now is your chance to get on it. So download the mp3 (no pre-listening) load it into your ipod and bring it along. All at once, we will press play and enjoy the ride... together. This will probably be the last MP3 experiment until warmer days so don't sleep.

If you're in college or have some college students' ID, you better go ice skating tonight. Come on, it's free. And Wollman Rink in Central Park is beautiful. They say this is their way of promoting the opening for the 2005/2006 season, but you can just see it as "something to do in Central Park at night that won't get you mugged (maybe)." There will be a live DJ so you won't hear any of that lame elevator muzak; plus there will be giveaways and door prizes. Can you beat that?

Date: Thursday, October 27 Time: 7-11 pm Venue: Wollman Rink, Central Park (see above for directions) Cost: Free with a "valid" college/university ID
Every once and a while I will brave The Delancey - packed full of tourist hipsters and one of the worst internal layouts I have ever seen - for a good band or a good deal. Tonight kind of has both. Michael Leviton performs, there is a free BBQ from 7-8, and free beer from 9-10. there are also giveaways from Ace Fu Records, Stop Smiling Magazine, and Neighborhoodies making (no, not hoodies!) tee shirts on the spot.

Gala always makes me think of fancy party dresses. Surface Mag always makes me think of stark black suits. Woordford Reserve sponsorship always makes me think of drunken bourbon hooligan activities. Either way, the Avant Guardian is quite a nice representation of high end fashion photography. See and be seen tonight at the opening "gala."

Wow.. big up to this undisclosed promoter for bringing Baltimore's best - Scottie B - to one of the cities best systems. Plus, its rare that a good throw down at APT has no cover... but this one does... and an open bar from 9-10 of Red Bull and Vodka. If you have been hearing me rant about Baltimore Club music for the last month or so and have not gone out to anything then this is your official popping. Start early and stay late.
Date: Thursday, October 27th Time: 9:00pm Location: APT (419 West 13th Street) Cost: Free
Every once and a while the guys at Troma Films - makers of personal favorites such as Class of Nuke'em High and Cannibal! The Musical - throw a really good party. These boys know fake gore better than Gwar so expect dancing zombies, hula hooping goth girls, and all sorts of bloody suprises at this 50's styled "sock hop" throwdown. Free Energy Vodka and Pabst from 10-11 get you ready for the evening while DJs Jumpin' Jorge Fame and Hollidave Mason provide the soundtrack to this perfect Thursday night jump off. Costumes welcome but not mandatory... DVD givaways... Oh, and did I mention the Tromettes?
Date: Thursday, October 27th Time: 10:00pm Location:Supreme Trading (213 North 8th Street, Williamsburg) Cost: Free
Matt from Pay2Cum has put together a pre holloween throw down tonight. There is an open vodka bar from 12-1 and some sort of keg beer action thing going on. Before and after that you can drink 32oz. Buds for $6 which is really not a big deal because thats just 2 $3 pints in one bottle. I can only expect the music will be a sort of booty shaking houston x baltimore throwdown.
Date: Thursday, October 27t Time: 10:00pm Location: Double Happiness (173 Mott between Broome and Grand) Cost: Free with RSVP
Any press release that comes across my virtual desk with the phrase "Come for the puppets and stay for the restoration of the Zombie Slut Princess’s rightful crown!" is okay by me. I am a little skeptical of a "free" fundraiser but who knows...
So tonight is a fundraiser at the Read for "Jack and the Beanstalk:
A new musical with puppets by Natalie Weiss." There is a sneak peak at the show (puppets!), an "ultra-competitive" zombie costume contest, art, djs, open air market, nypho kissing booth, bake sale, $3 beers, and "Hot Girls playing vibraphones and accordions." Talk about an after work extravaganza.
Date: Friday, October 28th Time: 5:00pm, to 10:00pm Location: Read Café (158 Bedford at North 8th, Williamsburg) Cost: "Free for the Undead"
Whats better than riding your bike through the busy streets of New York with a couple hundred people??? Riding your bike through the busy streets with a couple hundred people wearing contumes!
Date: Friday, October 28th Time: 7pm Location: Ride begins in Union Square Cost: Free
This hot new Friday weekly continues with DJ Lindsay on the decks upstairs and free open bar from 10-11. They layout of this joint is terrible (like putting a really small bar downstairs right at the entrance having some dude work a rope to get down there when there is plenty of room) but I am willing to overlook all of that because the music is great and the free drinks are a nice plus. Okay, enough bitter bastard.
Date: Friday: October 28th Time: 10:00pm Location: 6's & 8's (Stanton and Chrystie) Cost: Free with RSVP
I am not sure I am down with this new $5 Friday policy at Luke and Leroy. But I am just going to list all the free crap you may get if you go here and that should be enough this week... Free 1977 x We tee shirts. Free Etnies swag. Free video (watching). 2 hrs of free beer (drinking). Music from Catchdubs and BluJemz.
Date: Friday, October 28th Time: 11:00pm - 4:00am Location: Luke & Leroy (21 7th Ave at Leroy) Cost: $5 with RSVP

This one is just reiterating a point that I have made before, bike dudes are crazy. And if you dont believe me watch this video of Bike Kill 2004 so you know what to expect for Black Label Bike Club's Bike Kill 2005. I dont know too many details but the best I can figure people show up on all sorts of bikes, tall ones, small ones, homemade ones, tandem ones, etc, and craziness ensues. Expect races, jousting, bike tossing, beer drinking and a lil bit of mayhem.
Date: Saturday, October 29th Time: 12:00pm Location: Sandford and Willoughby, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn Cost: Free
Haven't you ever wanted to play to a room full of dogs dressed in halloween costumes? No? Well the Ming Dynasty does. This afternoon they are going to be playing in Thompkins Square Park as part of their Dog Run Halloween Parade. I mean, look at that guy above... how cute. It's a dog with man hands! There will be prizes, and trick contests, and people dressed up to match their dogs and (hopefully) dogs dressed like cats. If I had one of those miniature dogs thats what I'd dress him like. Or maybe a subway rat. It cost a $5 raffle ticket to get in but I am sure you can just watch from over the fence. (photo by Diane Cohen)
Date: Saturday, October 29th Time: 12:00pm Location: Thompkins Square Park (Ave B & 9th Street) Cost: Free to peak over the fence
"Prospect Park celebrates Halloween with good old-fashioned fright. Deep in the Park, where there is no one to hear you scream, the woods are haunted by witches, ghosts and vampires lurking in the dark forest. Date: Saturday, October 29th Time: 12pm - 5pm Location: Prospect Park Cost: Free
Now don't go getting this scary pier confused with the Shakespeare scary pier, this is an entirely different scary pier on the Hudson. This is the 6th Annual Pier of Fear...
"The Pier of Fear will feature the Park's FREE trademark MAZE OF HORRORS. Follow Igor and the creatures of the night as they guide you through tunnels and secret passageways leading to laboratories, graveyards and chambers of terror. See objects move about, hear frightening sounds and see terrifying images as live actors take you on a tour the creepiest maze in New York City. At dark, the maze will become even scarier for older children."

This last year I did a research paper on Robert Creeley (and REALLY got into it) after which my teacher informed me I could go hear him read that week. For one random reason or another I did not. The following poets he worked with, were touched by, and will be present to remember Robert Creeley this Saturday at St. Marks Church: Irene Aebi, Ammiel Alcalay, John Ashbery, Amiri Baraka, Charles Bernstein, William Corbett, Carolyn Forche, Kathleen Fraser, Peter Gizzi, Allan Graham, Bobbie Louise Hawkins, Anselm Hollo, Fanny Howe, Lisa Jarnot, Alex Katz, Vincent Katz, Basil King, Harry Mattison, Brad Morrow, Simon Pettet, Archie Rand, Tom Raworth, Ed Sanders, Leslie Scalapino, Rod Smith, Anne Waldman, Keith Waldrop, Rosmarie Waldrop, Elizabeth Willis, CD Wright, and John Yau. Read Creeley poetry here.
Date: Saturday, October 29 Venue: St. Marks Church, 2nd Avenue & 10th St Time: 1:00 pm Cost: Free
"[...]this site-specific theatrical event features the ghost of William Shakespeare himself along with the spirits of his most famous characters. Shakespeare rules his creations with an iron fist, but here they rebel and break out of their scripted destinies. This interactive performance features a cast of 20 performers, leading audiences on a walking tour around scenic Pier 25 and onto the decks of the historic Yankee Ferry. As the audience travels through the "haunted pier," characters such as Macbeth and The Witches, Hamlet, Caliban and Romeo & Juliet will appear, each speaking the words penned over four hundred years ago. Crowds will be led through the Hall of Fairies from A Midsummer Night's Dream, examine Julius Caesar's wounds, dip toes into Ophelia's Riverbed of Death (Hamlet), journey through a Shakespearean Chamber of Darkness and dine at the table of Titus Andronicus (where Titus is served a pie with a special filling – his family)."
Honestly, I know this costs five bucks, but really how often do you get to chill with Macbeth and Hamlet at the same time? Preformances are hourly from Saturday through Monday.
Date: Saturday, October 29th - Monday, October 31st Time: Sat. and Sun. 2, 3, 4, & 5 PM, Mon. 4, 5, 6, & 7 PM Venue: Pier 25, NYC West Side Highway & N. Moore Street Cost: Free

Um... Okay... "The folks at D&S Knitwear are crafting plans for all Hallows Eve. We're opening up all 3500 sq feet of the loft plus the roof deck for an unholy evening of drinking and debauchery. See DJ's tag teaming all night, and we're pouring Brooklyn and Sangria at the bar. We have NO COVER this time, but if liquor does you better than wine or that luscious local Brooklyn brew, feel free provide, we'll give you the ice. Costumes are strongly encouraged, since those who cannot find the spirit of this most sacred of nights, but come to drink our booze anyway, will be punished through taunting and ridicule.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to numerous complaints and a health department investigation after last year, this years ritual sacrifice has been
cancelled. Alternate refreshments will be provided.
Directions: L train to Dekalb Ave. Exit at the rear of the train. Walk one block west (towards Manhattan) down Wyckoff Ave to the corner of Hart St. across from the C Town grocery. 97 Wyckoff Ave. 2nd floor."

Apparently one of the best Halloween parties around, Mass Appeal is throwing themselves a lil get together. Costumes are optional but strongly suggested, and there will be tons of candy to help rot your teeth! I mean really, what's Halloween with out a cavity or two?
Our friend Moe Choi is at it again. This time forgoing the cover charge and dropping a free vodka open bar. He's joined on the tables by some additional serious party music DJs and it all goes down at Morrisey Park (which used to be Open Air... RIP) This is a great way to strech the use of that sexy vampire costume you have been waiting to rock all month.
Date: Saturday, October 29th Time: 10:00pm Location: Morrisey Park (122 St. Marks Place at Ave A) Cost: Free
Everyone and a while an event gets sent over to me that I am not exactly sure what to make of, and well, this is one of those times. If you are looking for something to do today, throw on your Halloween costume and head over to the courtyard of St. Marks Church for the 2nd Annual Really Really Free Market.
"Dress up in your CRAZIEST Halloween garb! Best costume wins the best pumpkin pie you've ever had! And it's vegan! Swap goods (You know, the stuff that is too good to throw away but you shouldnt keep), share skills, give presents, eat food, hang out, dance, sing and have fun! All for free! Nothing will be for sale! There will be Halloween-themed Games! Music! and Food! The Really Free Market is an open-air bazaar and celebration, where we discard capitalist notions of interaction and have fun trying new models of exchange. This will only be as great as you make it. We will provide the framework; you supply the material. Bring free stuff..."

Share is the closest thing I've seen to a nob twiddler's 'jam' session. Its an open mic of sorts where musicians are invited to come out, plug in their gear, and jam along with each other. I love impov and this is a perfect example of the beautiful connectivity of man (and man) and machine (and more machines).
Of course, Share goes down every week. So why am I writing about it? Because tonight there is a VERY special live performance by Al Haca sound system this trio create and intertwined soundscape of post-apocolyptic hip hop over electronic dub rhythems. The 3 man set-up is simple... laptop, fx, and mc. The result, mind-bending. They are also playing a pay show at Scenic on Sunday but catch the live show tonight for free. They are joined by Sterotyp who I am unfamiliar with but is on Stephan Dorfmeister's always-amazing G-Stone label
Listen to Al Haca live on Beta Lounge radio (with free account but Beta Lounge is great online radio so you should have one anyway)

"If you look on the IMBD, you’ll find this quote about the movie, Plan 9 from Outer Space: “This movie maybe be awful, but it's the best!” The guys from the Concrescence collective of musicians and visualists (from whence the band Send comes) are going to try to make it even better (worse?). They’re improvising their own score with lap steel guitar (The player is rumored to be able to do a killer theremin impression), a vintage synthesizer, a traditional drum kit played with a viola bow and dowel rods, and a guitar that’s run through something called a ‘space modulator’. If you like Star Trek, or if you like people-watching people who like Star Trek, this one’s for you." [written by Justin from New Release]

I gotta say kids, I'm almost Halloweened-ed out (don't tell my friend Rosanne though, she'd be really disappointed in my Halloween spirit!) I may be able to squeeze one more in though.
