Reflections on the Future Salon

"Reflections on the Future will examine the nature of politics at the start of the 21st Century. It seems that the traditional conception of Left and Right means less than ever. This trend was vividly apparent in the 2004 election, when few on either side were excited by their party's own platform. Political positions were defined negatively. Liberals were rarely for Kerry so much as against Bush. Conservatives were not so much united behind Bush as they were against liberals. Even the categories 'liberal' and 'conservative' seemed increasingly meaningless amidst independent, libertarian, neoconservative, moderate, or simply apathetic voters."

On Screen at Bauplatz

You may have walked by Bauplatz a million times and not even realized it was there. It’s the little, gravel-filled, open-air space just off Bedford that has sporadically opened its doors to music performances where the sounds come out of hanging gourds and to Sunday night screenings of high quality cinema projected onto concrete walls. The space was dreamed for such sundries. It has modular elements that allow each night to have a setup of its own. (It also has a food cart from which a chef makes cuisine that dabbles in New York corner kebab, Argentinean barbecue and Thai street food.) Tonight begins On Screen, their last weekend of events in their inaugural year. On Screen features the video art installations by Amanda Anderson, Cristina Hernandez-Botero, Julien ourdes, Julian Lwin, Marta Lwin, Werner Morath, Sharpy, Mariko anaka and Jurate Veceraite. Cocoa Cracker Brown accompanies the nstallations with a DJ set.

Date: Friday, September 30
Time: 7-10 pm
Venue: Bauplatz, 174 Grand St. just east of Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg
Cost: Free

Eastern Bloc Photo Opening

twolonely.jpg

"Having lived in New York City for almost a decade, Susan Marjanovic has used her camera to capture the urban landscape in all five boroughs. Seeking out abandoned, vacant, and decaying areas of the city, she studies the effects of nature and time on manmade structures and examines remnants of long-lost human history.

Recently her Jugoslavian heritage led her to travel to Serbia and Croatia, where she found beauty in the same types of forgotten spaces. While documenting environments and objects that cross all boundaries of race, class and location, she realized that sometimes the further you travel, the closer you are to home. The fragile traces of life that link humanity exist everywhere."

Tonight swing by Williamsburg staple, Supreme Trading, for a Franz Ferdinand album listening party. So, last Friday I wound up here at about 2am and ended up attempting to climb their newest gallery installation of giant tire spheres until last call came around.
