Drunk Vs. Stoned Soccer Match

artwork_images_139237_166146t_.jpg

A while back we talked about an art exhibit, Drunk vs. Stoned. Well tonight, a series of hand picked artists in hand made jerseys will take to the field to find out which is the best (?) performance enhancing of the pair. Personally, I am going with Drunk because playing soccer after drinking a bottle of Wild Turkey would just cause me to beat the crap out of the other team and after they were lying on the ground, the rest would be a cakewalk. Plus, I think the other team would get distracted after like 5 minutes, take frequent water breaks and really want to lay in the grass and enjoy the day. Of course, only this afternoon's match will decide this age old battle.

Awakening Opening

Awakening

"In a series of 10 color photographs of various sizes, Shochat appropriates the concept of perceived beauty, blending interior with exterior, to highlight the unpredictable boundary between the real and the artificial. Shochat depicts portraits of women and of trees with various calculated backdrops that on first glance look very natural, yet on further observance appear magically produced. Mathematically and logically proportioned, the images that Shochat creates represent a highly composed ephemeral world... where one lives among nature but not reality." Trepanation Series Opening

Magan.jpeg

"Trepanation is one of the oldest medical procedures dating back to the New Stone Age. Performed as a perforation to the cavalarium for cases of splintered fractures of the cranial vault, closed head trauma, and psychotherapeutic treament, the controversial procedure has been practiced in almost every culture and civilization. In The Trepanation Series Constance Brady bores tunnels through found paintings to the sheetrock of the gallery wall below revealing the kindred umbra previously bound inside each canvas. Her method addresses “the stresses conferred upon an artist by painting-as-practice… by blemishing conventionally attractive paintings I have realized and announced true paragons of beauty.” By electively intruding upon a revered surface (the brain; the canvas), a higher level of awareness is exposed." Marcel Dzama Opening

Marcel_Dzama_Untitled_1999_443_42.jpg

I love Dzama's minimal figurative style. There is a certain stillness to his work that brings grand scale to small canvases. Tonight he opens a show, The Course of Human History Personified. Justine Reyes Opening

justine.jpg

Invisible NYC is proud to host a solo-exhibit of photographs by multi-media artist Justine Reyes, entitled "My Uncle Vinny."
For the past two years Ms. Reyes has been painstakingly photographing and documenting her immediate family and their belongings. For her exhibit at Invisible NYC she will present, My Uncle Vinny, a series that juxtaposes large-scale color portraits of her uncle with smaller photographs of his personal objects. Each object is a unique treasure, an artifact deeply imbued with implied history and usage. Through the camera’s lens they are taken from the mundane plane of their everyday existence and transformed into monumental icons.
The show will run from September 8th through October 8th, Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 8:00 PM.

Date: Thursday, September 8th (opening only)
Time: 7-9pm

Double Dam, Stuhltrager

Its another double opening at Dam, Stuhltrager. In gallery one, Mark Esper premieres "Second Orrery", an installation encompassing a whirling tornado. The ethereal twisting column of gasses is reflected in other spiral forms that constitute the work, including a double helix and train running on looped track.

In the other gallery is the New York Debut of Ryan Wolfe. For his New York debut, Ryan Wolfe presents "Sketch of a Field of Grass" an installation that encapsulates the experience of watching the rise and fall of a summer breeze across a field. Just as in a real field, every single blade responds to the wind in a slightly different way. Individual blades in the installation are computationally autonomous, possessing the ability to sense and respond to local environment independently. Continues through October 16th

Radical Read-In

A lot of the time this website is dedicated to cheap binge drinking and other debaucherous activity, but contrary to popular belief, we actually do know how to do things like read! Today, check out Printed Matter's third instalment of Radical Read In.

"Radical Read-Ins are designed to bring members of the community into Printed Matter to share their favorite books or parts of books with each other, and to encourage conversation among readers. Participants are invited to flag books on Printed Matter's table tops and bookshelves with specially designed bookmarks that have room to note particular pages, make written comments, or leave a name and contact information for future off-site discussions. Through the Radical Read-Ins, LTTR promotes reading as an activist undertaking, one that can band people together, revolutionize thinking, mobilize groups, or just expand a single person's view of the world or the self."

Gary Baseman / Scott Musgrove / Miss Van Opening

poop131.jpg.jpeg

Three amazing painters give another double opening tonight as "back to school" week for the gallery scene continues. On one side you have Gary Baseman. "For The Garden of Unearthly Delights, Baseman taps into the part of the psyche which contains our primitive impulses such as sex, anger, and hunger. Influenced by 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' a renaissance masterpiece by Hieronymous Bosch, Baseman delves deeper into the “pleasure principle” introducing us to little demons and devils that act out our most suppressed impulses and desires." On the Other is Scott Musgrove and Miss Van. "In 'Natural Alchemy' Scott Musgrove exhibits his latest archeological discoveries. His surreal exploration of extinct animals blends the bizarre comic book world of quirky, often grotesque, characters against rich, finely executed landscapes. His influences range from the work of artists, Carlos Crivelli, Jan Van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch to contemporary artists Donald Roller Wilson, Botero and Odd Nerdrum. Miss Van’s sexually suggestive portraits originated as graffiti and have appeared on numerous city streets in Europe and the United States. The French artist began painting on city walls at the age of 18. Drawn to the excitement of painting illegally and the freedom from censorship, Miss Van used graffiti as a way to boycott the conventional medium of art. Her ultra-feminine characters are a direct challenge to the toughness and masculinity that is associated with graffiti and street art." Both shows are not to be missed and run through October 8th.

The September Concerts

SC_Banner_Header_081005.gif

Being that today is September 11th. I tried to find some sort of graphic on the web to put up that I felt was a appropriate signifier of both a memorial for those lost and an honorary symbol for those that stepped up. Unfortunatelly, all I found were either images of terror, George Bush with horns drawn on his head, or corney eagles and flags (and lots of propaganda to boot). The people over at September Concerts seem to be much better at this memorial thing then I am. Since 2002, they have been organizing "public and private expression and the sharing of our emotions through music" for today. There are over 600 musicians playing over 117 private and 6 public venues throughout the city. The list is too long to put here but make sure you check the website out for more info.

Back in middle school I guess it is, you learn about the Bill of Right and Civil Liberities, etc. In case you have forgetten any of this, the Manhattan Libertarian Party has set up a screening of the film, Unconstitutional. The film "reveals how paranoia, fear and racial and ethnic profiling have led to the subjugation of our constitutional rights, without protecting us from future terrorist attack. Through personal stories, the film explores how detentions and police infiltration of ordinary Americans has been based solely on unconstitutional directives from the White House and the Justice Department." San Gennero Feast Time

sang4_small.jpg

When I was a kid, I used to love coming to the San Gennaro. The games, the food, the Italian community, the food! Nowadays, I am sad to say that it is little more than another street carnival. The food is still great, and the effort is still there to put together that old world charm and bring alive the Little Italy community. My suggestion is to go early, grab your sausage and peppers or mozzareppa (sp?) and be on your way. Early dinners on the weekdays are also recommended. If, however, you are new to New York then this is an experience that you should not miss. Full Schedule here. Continues through the 25th.

Wise Words From Wysmuller

While the president claims the jury is still out on global warming, the rest of us are actually concered about how humans have impacted the environment and the atmosphere. This evening, Thomas H. Wysmuller, retired meteorologist (weather scientist) formerly with NASA, tells us what the really effects of global warming are and answers some of our questions. How will global warming cause the next ice age to occur in this century? How does global warming increase hurricanes'power and what can we do to stop it?

Made in the UK: Music With Attitude

Powerhouse was so excited about their new book Made in the UK: Music with Attitde, 1977-1983 that they put together an exhibition and opening party fot the photographer, Janette Beckman. Oh, and did I mention complimentary cocktails? Get a tatse of the exhibit from part of the artists statement...

"Once upon a time in the UK, before MTV and big business took over the music industry, before people became obsessed with money, before the time of stylists and expensive designer labels, when bands had total artistic control, anything seemed possible, there were no rules and they were making it up as they went along... The bands were just like us, a mix of mostly working-class kids and former art students. There were no publicists to keep you away from the band; you traveled with them on the coach, hung out in the bar, ate in the ‘caff,’ went to the sound check, and poked your camera wherever you could."

The Waters Reglitterized

exhibition.jpeg

I love Laurie Anderson's work so here is your chance to catch her newest video installation... “For the last year I’ve been on the road with a solo performance. Every night another theater, another hotel room. As the months went on my dreams became wild, relentless. Headless singing squirrels, vast spaces, bizarre clatterings, I began to draw these dreams literally out of self defense. The more I drew, the more they began to look like story boards. So I made a movie.”

S&P Stanikas Opening

"The question that these artists pose is, at the end of the day, as simple as it is sounds: knowing that we are destined to an inescapable end, why do we invent systems, types of relations that are absolutely destructive and, ultimately, suicidal? This exhibition will showcase a new series of photographs, paintings, drawings, sculpture and video. The Stanikas remain equally faithful to their understanding and masterful knowledge of each of these media, while not seeking to develop a “style” recognizable and designed immediately to offer a “product” tailored solely to the market place." Autumn Moon Festival

So even though it was 90 degrees all week long, its is September, and autumn is on its way. It's almost time for apple and pumpkin picking! In the mean time though, check out the The Autumn Moon Festival.

"The Autumn Moon Festival is a major holiday in most Asian communities all over the world. Traditionally, the Autumn Moon Festival takes place on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, the time of year when the moon is at its fullest and brightest, marking the ideal time to celebrate the abundance of the summer's harvest. Round mooncakes made of flaked pastry are baked and enjoyed, ornate lanterns are displayed and people are encouraged to come out of their homes and bask in the glow of the full moon.

This year's event will take place on the actual day of the mid-Autumn full moon. Chinatown will celebrate the Autumn Moon tradition with traditional and contemporary cultural performances, lion dances, games and children's activities. Enjoy free "moon cake" tastings and take part in the festival's annual "riddle contest."

Time: 11:30am - 5pm
Location: Mott Street (between Bayard and Canal)

Global Issues in Design & Visuality (part 2)

"Impermanence may be the only permanent characteristic of the 21st century. New urban landscapes are rapidly evolving in response to tides of immigration; at the same time, new geographies are mapped everyday on the internet. Goods, services, and images have become their own culture, transforming designers and artists into culture authors. How can we talk about these new cultures? Lectures by anthropologists, historians, and critics will establish a critical framework for case studies drawn from design and visual media."

A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France and the Birth of America

"Imagine being seventy years old in the 18th century, setting sail for France with the weight of the American Revolution on your shoulders. Coming from a nation embarked in an imbalanced war with the British, there is an integral need for you to establish an alliance with one of Europe’s dominating superpowers. With no official foreign allies, there is little room for error in a quest to secure the nation’s independence. This pending challenge awaited Benjamin Franklin in 1776 as the nation’s first diplomat. Being that the French government and general beliefs were diametrically opposite to America, the odds were not in his favor. Author of A Great Improvisation, Stacy Schiff unveils a candid story behind Franklin’s grand finale as the nation’s first ambassador."

Pin-UPStairs Affordable Art

All of the work is shown unframed and hung directly on the walls. Unlike other gallery exhibitions, the work is refreshingly cash/credit and carry, allowing buyers to fall in love and purchase a piece of art on the spot that they can take home with them that day. Beat, B-Beat, B-B-B Beat, Go Beat Club!

Friday's are lame. The bars are packed, the drinks are expensive, NYU girls are puking all over the street corners and you won't dare step foot in your local jaunts (or jawns if you got Philly style) because the turn lame at the end of the work week. Thankfully, the crew over at Beat Club keep bringing us a great, crowded-but-not-too-crowded, party each week with free beer AND free pizza (but not at the same time). Its all things 80's and 90's on the table from old school house to new wave madness as Rich Juzwiak joins in the fun and there is free beer from 1am - 2am. So after you are over being "so over" Union Pool (and going there anyway) then check this out.

Oh, and special Williamburg moment I heard out of my window last night, just for your enjoyment....

girl: "so I was talking to this girl at vice the other day..."
boy: "I.. Fucking... Love... Vice. Do you remember when they were doing the issues like... 2 years ago and..."
girl: "I have been reading Vice for fucking seven years, okay"

Okay, this play (shut up) changed my life. Yeah, I am a sappy suburban hippie dude (2nd time I called myself that this week) but there is a certain power and struggle withing the lines of for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf (by Ntozake Shange) that is both gripping and generation defining. La Strada

B00005JKGQ.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Usually I don't go for Fellini movies. I fell asleep in 8.5 about 4 times and it took me 3 sittings to get through Satyricon. But La Strada is something different. It is a battered love tale of a strong man circus performer and the abusive relationship with his purchased bride. It is, to me, Fellini at his best touching on man's inability to connect, struggle for love and independance, and need for companionship all tangled up in beautifully framed scenes and amazing acting. If you have not seen this film, catch it tonight for free or at least Netflix it.

Global Issues in Design & Visuality (part 3)

This highly recommended lecture series on being a concious designer continues with a discussion on culture-centered web design. "Impermanence may be the only permanent characteristic of the 21st century. New urban landscapes are rapidly evolving in response to tides of immigration; at the same time, new geographies are mapped everyday on the internet. How can we talk about these new cultures? Lectures by anthropologists, historians, and critics will establish a critical framework for case studies drawn from design and visual media."

Confounding Expectations

"This timely panel coinciding with the exhibition now on view at Aperture Gallery introduces audiences to a wide variety of perspectives on the everyday lives of Arabs today. Nazar offers a fresh and revealing record of everyday Arab culture that transcends the romanticized and politicized images that saturate contemporary media. The exhibition will also feature a multi-media presentation entitled A Look Back, featuring historical work from Arab countries and the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut. Internation Pop flavor of the week Annie has been making her round in NYC for the past few weeks but this is the first chance to see her live for free. Ad Hoc Festival

logohome.gif

Ad Hoc is a festival of "social marketing" designed to teach you how to execute your political agenda. Today there is both a great panel discussion and a great film screening.

Loud and Clear - Unconventional and Effective Ways to be Seen & Heard (Panel Discussion - 5:00 - 7:00)
"Join creative minds from Renegade Marketing Group, Improv Everywhere, and Billionaires for Bush for a panel discussion on creative messaging techniques. The discussion will be followed by a Q & A for attendees. The panelists will also be available for one-on-one consultation with any competing teams to discuss the progress on their own social marketing campaigns."

Blue Vinyl (Film Screening - 8:00pm)
"A Toxic Comedy Look at Vinyl, The World's Second Largest Selling Plastic. With humor, hope and a piece of vinyl siding firmly in hand, Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand and co-director Daniel B. Gold travel from Helfand’s hometown to America’s vinyl manufacturing capital and beyond in search of answers about the nature of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Her parents’ decision to “re-side” their house with this seemingly benign cure-all for many suburban homes turns into a toxic odyssey with twists and turns that most ordinary homeowners wouldnever dare to take. The result is a humorous but sobering and uniquely personal exploration of the relationship between consumers and industry in the feature-length documentary Blue Vinyl, which won the cinematography award in the documentary competition at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival and was subsequently broadcast on HBO.

For The City

"For eleven consecutive nights in late September and early October, internationally renowned artist Jenny Holzer and Creative Time will present For The City, a series of light projections at Rockefeller Center (September 29 - October 2), New York University, Bobst Library (October 3 - October 5), and The New York Public Library (October 6 - October 9).At Rockefeller Center and The New York Public Library, light projections of poems that detail hope, pain, and longing will envelop the buildings with beauty and power, fusing location and projection. For the City will include poems by Wislawa Szymborska, Yehuda Amichai, Henri Cole, Mahmoud Darwish, and other celebrated poets. Countering the ubiquity of the sound bite, Holzer offers a range and plurality of viewpoints and voices."

"For the first time in New York, Holzer will project recently declassified United States government documents at Bobst Library, New York University, just south of Washington Square Park. The artist’s public presentation of the documents explores the problem of achieving a just and workable balance between secrecy and transparency. Under the landmark Freedom of Information Act passed in 1966, all of the selected texts are now public record and available to anyone with access to the Internet or libraries such as Bobst, though some remain heavily redacted. Thomas Blanton, the director of the National Security Archive, with whom Holzer worked while researching the documents, said, “She turns every surface into a page, she illuminates not only texts but perception, and by projecting these secrets into the night she transforms the words of power into transitory bolts of lightning.”

Reflections on the Future Salon

"Reflections on the Future will examine the nature of politics at the start of the 21st Century. It seems that the traditional conception of Left and Right means less than ever. This trend was vividly apparent in the 2004 election, when few on either side were excited by their party's own platform. Political positions were defined negatively. Liberals were rarely for Kerry so much as against Bush. Conservatives were not so much united behind Bush as they were against liberals. Even the categories 'liberal' and 'conservative' seemed increasingly meaningless amidst independent, libertarian, neoconservative, moderate, or simply apathetic voters."

On Screen at Bauplatz

You may have walked by Bauplatz a million times and not even realized it was there. It’s the little, gravel-filled, open-air space just off Bedford that has sporadically opened its doors to music performances where the sounds come out of hanging gourds and to Sunday night screenings of high quality cinema projected onto concrete walls. The space was dreamed for such sundries. It has modular elements that allow each night to have a setup of its own. (It also has a food cart from which a chef makes cuisine that dabbles in New York corner kebab, Argentinean barbecue and Thai street food.) Tonight begins On Screen, their last weekend of events in their inaugural year. On Screen features the video art installations by Amanda Anderson, Cristina Hernandez-Botero, Julien ourdes, Julian Lwin, Marta Lwin, Werner Morath, Sharpy, Mariko anaka and Jurate Veceraite. Cocoa Cracker Brown accompanies the nstallations with a DJ set.

Date: Friday, September 30
Time: 7-10 pm

Eastern Bloc Photo Opening

twolonely.jpg

"Having lived in New York City for almost a decade, Susan Marjanovic has used her camera to capture the urban landscape in all five boroughs. Seeking out abandoned, vacant, and decaying areas of the city, she studies the effects of nature and time on manmade structures and examines remnants of long-lost human history.

Recently her Jugoslavian heritage led her to travel to Serbia and Croatia, where she found beauty in the same types of forgotten spaces. While documenting environments and objects that cross all boundaries of race, class and location, she realized that sometimes the further you travel, the closer you are to home. The fragile traces of life that link humanity exist everywhere."
