King of Rai

khaled10.jpg

The self-proclaimed “king of rai,” Khaled Hadj Brahim was born in Algeria in 1960. As a young man he was fiercely drawn to rai, the officially despised but wildly popular music of Algeria’s outcasts. When he started collaborating with producer Rachid Baba Ahmed, Cheb (“Young”) Khaled revolutionized rai, turning it into a synthesizer and drum-machine driven pop music in which the modern sound and racy lyrics were an implicit challenge to Algeria’s conservative culture.

In the mid-‘80s, fundamentalist violence forced him to relocate to France, from which he has continued to push the boundaries of rai, exploring its affinity with funk, reggae and R&B. This is Khaled’s second visit to SummerStage (1991).

Amp Fiddler at BAM

Amp Fiddler Thumb

Talk about a lunchtime concert... makes me mad I work in Manhattan. "Amp Fiddler weaves a tapestry of soul, funk, jazz, and pure electronic velvet that redefines musical boundaries. Fiddler rose to prominence after he was invited to join the Parliament Funkadelic posse by none other than funk guru George Clinton. The range of collaborators on his debut record, Waltz of a Ghetto Fly—Raphael Saadiq, Clinton, Jay Dee, and Moodymann—give a good indication of the depth of Fiddler’s musical vision. Having recorded with everyone from Prince and Maxwell to fellow Detroit native Carl Craig, and having toured with Jamiroquai and Fishbone, Fiddler carves a unique take on electronic soul."

Red White and Blue

Rwb

Over 60 artists have been asked to choose one of three colors: red, white or blue and create a work that is predominately that color or that conceptually/thematically refers to that color. There are no limitations or parameters to the size, subject or medium of the works, and artists may submit works in each of the three colors. The works will be installed salon-style grouped by color on three large walls of the gallery space. It all kicks off with a block party on Wooster Street tonight.

The exhibition provides a platform for an exploded view of nationalist symbolism, a celebration of the gloriously skewed ‘old glory’ that is art making and the contribution it makes to identity formation, nationalist or otherwise.

Brazilian Arts & Film Festival - Day 1

The Brazilian Film Festival Of New York kicks off its third year with two special nights at SummerStage. The festival will present a week and a half of great new films from one of cinema’s most vibrant creative communities.

Opening night on Friday, July 8 begins with a performance from Brazilian rapper Gabriel O Pensador. One of the most popular (and controversial) rappers in Brazilian hip-hop, Gabriel Contino, a.k.a. “Gabriel the Thinker,” first emerged in during the early ‘90s with songs that mixed pop production with witty and caustic observations of Rio’s wealthy youth subculture. Gabriel’s performance will be followed by Maria’s Place (Bendito O Fruto) from director Sergio Goldenberg. An accident involving a flying manhole cover leads to a chance reunion between two childhood friends—one a widow, the other the owner of a beauty parlor. Thus begins an entertaining game of seduction that brings memories and hidden desires to the surface - furtive passions that end up threatening the hairdresser’s de facto marriage.

PS1 Warm-Up: Hans Peter Lindstrom & Prins Thomas

Hans-P4
[stolen straight from Flavorpill cuz we know nothing about these guys and they write better than we do...]

Hans-Peter Lindstrom and remix wizard Prins Thomas are purveyors of a mutant strain of Nordic disco known for its highly psychedelic properties (Lindstrom's oddly-titled EP There's a Drink in My Bedroom and I Need a Hot Lady sounds like an undiscovered Can outtake). The two recently applied their wide-reaching backgrounds — touching on punk, gospel, folk, and psychedelia — to a series of productions for the likes of the Juan Maclean, LCD Soundsystem, and Brennan Green. Tonight's live set tweaks this colorful, kaleidoscopic range of references and wraps it together nicely atop a thick 4/4 groove.

Brazilian Arts & Film Festival - Day 2

The Brazilian Film Festival Of New York kicks off its third year with two special nights at SummerStage. The festival will present a week and a half of great new films from one of cinema’s most vibrant creative communities.

Under the direction of its late front man Chico Science, Nação Zumbi was one of the first bands to pioneer the mangue beat in the early ‘90s. Basically an embrace of all things contemporary, mangue beat bands incorporate hip-hop, funk, British acid rock, free jazz and much more into more traditional forms of Brazilian music. The Owner of History (A Dona da Historia), directed by Daniel Filho, is the compelling vision of a middle-aged woman who confronts her younger self, reliving her past and discovering what direction her life might have taken.

Instant Shakespeare - The Life of Henry the Fifth

Shakespeare is abound in the summer. Every park seems to be doing some rendition or variation. Here is one of the more interesting ones taht we have come across. In Shakespeare's day there was little time for rehearsal, and no directors as we know them today. Instant Shakespeare seeks to revive these traditions with an informal approach to the Bard's classic plays.

Blind Boys / Citizen Cope!!!

1blind_boys_of_alabama_pub_photo.jpg

Every Year there is one SummerStage show that I will not miss. That I will sit in that miserable line under 90 degree heat, have some bouncer strip search me, and remember the joy of a port-o-john at those temperatures all for the amazing music. This is it...

Formed in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind, The Blind Boys have been making transcendent gospel music for almost seven decades. They’ve starred on Broadway (The Gospel At Colonus), recorded with artists such as Lou Reed, Ibrahim Ferrer and Solomon Burke and recently won their fourth Grammy Award for an album of gospel soul recorded with young blues guitarist Ben Harper.

Clarence Greenwood, A.K.A. Citizen Cope, has his feet in two different musical worlds. His keen appreciation of alternative hip-hop (gained from his work a decade ago with Maryland rapper Basehead) collides with his love of classic blues and results in a compelling mix of the old and new. Greenwood’s poetic narratives of the lost and lonely will send chills down your spine even as they make you want to dance.

Convenient Store Dreams

Truth be told my all time favorite convenient store has got to be Wawa (anyone who didn't grow up in Jers or Pennsy is like "what the heck is Wawa). But anyway, for one day only, 711 may be my new fave. Today is the 40th anniversary of the Slurpee, and in honor of this 711 is giving out some free slurpees. I can't seem to find any in Manhattan (there was a rumor that one was opening on 23rd and Park today), but Brooklyn has a bunch of them. It's supposed to be about 95 today, so brain freeze may be the way to go.

In honor of their contribution to the form, Dactyl Foundation for the Arts & Humanities presents “From A to B”, an exhibition featuring the artwork of the AKB graffiti crew. While few graffiti writers make the transition from the street to the studio, even fewer bring their creativity into the professional world. Formed in Minneapolis and St. Paul in the late 1980s, many AKB members are successful within art and design as painters, graphic designers, illustrators and tattoo artists. AKB members have spread across the country influencing other graffiti writers as well as growing artistically in their own right. [found on the always amazing Freshnessmag.com]

Shelby Lynne

shelby_2.jpg

Celebrated country rock singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne became an overnight sensation when she released “I Am Shelby Lynn” in 2000. The mature, gritty album won her the Best New Artist Grammy Award—a sweet irony, considering she had already recorded six albums and spent over a decade toiling in music biz obscurity. Lynne’s music combines all the rich strains of the American tradition: country, blues, rock, gospel, soul, Western swing and jazz. “Shelby Lynne, like k.d. lang and Willie Nelson before her, is making a career out of freeing country from its own constrictions.“

Sweet Singing Sea Nymphs

Well, if you are one of the lucky few who manage to get up close enough to the stage to actually hear the music, Siren Fest is a great oppritunity to see some good bands play for free. For the rest of us who end up way in the back, this is a great oppritunity to openly get drunk on the street, act a fool and eat a Nathan's hot dog. Since 2001 the Village Voice has been bringing the Siren Fest to Coney Island, giving New Yorkers a great summer afternoon of music. This year's line up includes Spoon, Q And Not U, The Dears, Ambulance LTD, Mates of State, VHS or BETA, Saul Williams and a number of others. Click here for the full line up.

Date: Saturday, June 16th
Time: 1pm - 10pm

Celebrate New Orleans

Kermit Ruffins1
The spirit of the Big Easy comes to Central Park with this special celebration of the music and culture of New Orleans. If there’s one performer who embodies that spirit it’s trumpeter, singer and bandleader Kermit Ruffins. Renowned for live shows that feature vintage down-home jazz and abundant good humor, Ruffins is a showman and entertainer in the vein of Crescent City great Louis Armstrong. Named after their boss’ habit of serving his audience fresh Southern barbecue between sets (sorry: don’t look for that at SummerStage), The Barbecue Swingers are masters of the rollicking old-time jazz sound. There’s no doubt that Ruffins and The B.B.Q.’s will show Central Park how to have a good time, N’awlins-style.

Date: Saturday, July 16th
Time: 3:00pm

11th Annual Rakhaing Thingyan Burmese Water Festival

Traditionally, the Burmese Water Festival welcomes the arrival of the Burmese New Year. One of the water festival’s key celebrations is the act of water play where children and adults joyously pour water on each other to cleanse away the previous year’s tribulations and to give blessing and thanks for the coming year. Typically, the festival is held during the hottest days of the year and the pouring of the water has a practical aspect since it cools down the body. Known as a time of courtship for men and women, the festival also features the “Laung Hlay,” a traditional Burmese racing boat, which is filled with water and guarded by women. Young men wishing to participate in the courtship ritual must ask a woman permission to have a bowl of water from the boat. If she agrees, they will splash each other, and when his bowl is empty, he must ask again for more. Once the “Laung Hlay” is empty, another group is given a turn to splash. Many marriages have resulted from water play at the “Laung Hlay.” In addition to water play and the “Laung Hlay”, the Rakhaing Thingyan Burmese Water Festival will also feature the “Elder Respect Ritual” where young ones honor the contributions of their seniors in a ceremony. Another interesting feature is the “Than Chat,” which is a set of satirical performances that address the social and political issues of the day. There will be an essay contest for children ages 12 – 16 years old and a raffle drawing as well where lucky participants stand to win exciting prizes including a Burmese sapphire (2.24 carats), Delta Air Lines and Broadway tickets and memberships to the Asia Society and China Institute. The water festival offers guests samplings of Burmese cuisine, singing, dancing, music, arts and crafts and children’s games too. Burmese Water Festivals are celebrated by millions all over the world. The Rakhaing Thingyan Burmese Water Festival is the largest of its kind outside of Burma. Organized by ThinGyan

Tinariwen

tinariwen.jpg

Having met at a rebel training camp in Libya, the members of Tinariwen traded in their guns for guitars to play songs of resistance. Their music calls for a political awakening of consciousness and approaches the problems of exile, repression in their home country of Mali, and claims of sovereignty for the Tuareg people.

Starting the show, Ramatou Diakite fuses her culture’s bluesy-funky song styling with a nod towards hip-hop to create a wholly unique sound. Having grown up in the Wassoulou region of southern Mali, renowned for its musical richness, spiritual traditions and hunters’ lore, she has emerged as a powerful singer.

Wener Herzog Speaks

Grizzlyman
"In his mesmerizing new documentary, Grizzly Man, acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and violent death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen summers and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were killed by a grizzly near their campsite in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Reserve. In Grizzly Man, Herzog explores the larger questions about the uneasy relationship between man and nature as he chronicles Treadwell's final years in the wilderness. A discussion with director Werner Herzog, co-executive producer Jewel Palovak, and renowned grizzly expert/wildlife biologist Barrie Gilbert, moderated by WNYC Studio 360 host Kurt Andersen, will take place immediately after the screening.

Foot Down Downtown

Once again I am stating that bike dudes are tough. Tomorrow night, on the north end of Union Square look for bike madness and mayhem during the Foot Down Championships. "Foot Down was first utilized as a conflict resolution action between warring members of the Skull and Bones Society. Most modern versions of the game are inacted in an all out free for all, with the last one standing crowned the winner."

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

For you it is just a good chance to relive a classic (unless you are going to be at the show with me, which would be creepy). "American con artist Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) meets his match on the Riviera when he stumbles upon Lawrence (Michael Caine), an ultra-swank swindler with a penchant for impersonations. Clever and humorous, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a classic in the comedy genre."

Raul Thumb

"It’s rare that an artist arrives on the pop scene as fully loaded with musical potential as singer/composer Raúl Midón. Straddling latin jazz and soul, “His style is a febrile amalgam of Stevie Wonder vocals, feel-good pop songwriting, sophisticated jazz harmonies and a ferociously aggressive way of playing acoustic guitar” raves The Washington Post. After years as backup vocalist for Enrique Iglesias and pop diva Shakira, Midón recorded his debut, State of Mind, an earnest display of lyrical songwriting, full-bodied vocals, and flamenco-infused guitar improvisation."

Painters who Paint Paintings

Unknown
Williamsburg's Dam, Stuhltrager Gallery brings two painting shows to the table tonight. First, Jeff Schneider gathers a diverse crowd on canvas to explore meanings transferred through association and a painting’s ability to dispute such shallowness in "These Days". Secondly, Cristobal Dam expands his 8" x 8*’ minimalist graphics of a box into a commentary on Land Art in "Paint Box." His canvases are cartoons, a satire upon giant environments, small images expressing the same ambitions of a massive square mile production.

Get deep with Derrick May

Okay, this costs $5 buck but its worth it. Deep Space is (in my opinion) the best dance party in the city. Its too bad that it is on Monday nights and runs late because that means my 9-5 ass can't go that often. But tonight, the best party in the city brings a very special guest to the plates... One of the fathers of Techno himself, Derrick May. How deep can Derrick go? And what happens when a Techno legend shares decks with New York house legend Francois K? Only tonight will tell.

Dig In

So I am still writing about films here, but at least I can give you one that is not about hip hop... Tonight, catch a screening of the film Dig!. "DIG! follows the talented underground musicians Anton Newcombe, leader of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Courtney Taylor, head of The Dandy Warhols star-crossed friends and bitter rivals. From the moment they met Anton Newcombe and Courtney Taylor quickly bonded over a desire to not conform to the tastes of the recording industry. Yet the musicians' choices over how to express their creativity and originality in a profit-driven industry eventually put them at irreconcilable odds. Shot over seven years and culled from 1,500 hours of footage, DIG! is about both musicians' love and obsession, gigs and recordings, arrests and death threats, uppers and downers, and their choice between art and industry." Following the film there will be a Q&A with the director and of course "complimentary cocktails." Doors are at 6 but I would arrive as early as possible as these things are always PACKED!

Mariko Mori Performs

k05_main_picture23.jpg

I first came across Mariko Mori at the Brooklyn Museum of art a few years ago. She produces these large scale photos and video installations combining futuristic imagery with asian spiritual thought. The result is a picture of a world that could be, or may me, filled with opimism and promise.

Tonight is an special treat as she presents a live performance of Rei-okuri, her first performance in New York City since 1999. The piece is based "on a Jomon period (13,000-12,000 B.C to 240-230 B.C.) ritual in which villagers formed circular spaces to honor their ancestors, believing that they would return as spirits. Rei-okuri is translated as “ceremony of the transcendence.” The performance will feature Mori wearing a replica of a Jomon-period style clay mask from the Aso site, symbolizing the spirit of her Jomon-period ancestors. Utilizing an ancient tradition in a contemporary setting, Mori creates a space in which to connect the past and the future." This is a one shot deal and a rare chance to see one of the more inspirational living artists today.

Brooklyn For Free

Sometimes we need an event like this to remind us that this lil borough of ours, and in particular Williamsburg, stands for more than just being too-cool-for-school, but also cultural, political, and artistic freedoms that have traditionally been associated with the area. So today the fine folks over at Brooklyn Underwater Entertainment have set up a lil block party-get together-jamboree to remind us of those things "with a focus on environmental sustainability, affordable housing, DIY art and music, street culture, and craft workshops."

Over the course of the day expect "local artists, crafters, and vendors will sell their wares, and community activists will distribute information on topics ranging from fuel alternatives to neighborhood preservation." On hand will be groups like Williamsburg Warriors, Bluestockings and B.I.O. Bus

And of course no day in Brooklyn would be complete with out some good music from local DJs? So check out Chrome (Blackkat), Jason BK (Blackkak), Vitamindevo vs Biancadino, The Amazing Jordan, Miko (Wanderlust, The Kin), GERALD (Other Music) and Synapase (Beautiful/decay).

Date: Saturday, July 30th
Time: 11am - 7pm
Location: Bedford and N. 7th, Williamsburg

Deadbeat and Beat Pharmacy

1218.jpg

Boy, this is one of my personal favorites for the weekend. Beat Pharmacy is the first artist on Francois K's Wave label. He produced a sort of deep house / electro dub sound that you can get down to in a really deep way if you are feeling it. Plus, anyone with a song called "keef" makes me happy. I can only imagine that Deadbeat will create an equally interesting show.

"Deadbeat and Beat Pharmacy are the two best electronic dub-makers in he world. Beat Pharmacy, a cohort and labelmate of Francois K, leans more toward the psychedelic and deep side of the genre; while Deadbeat from the German label ~scape (Jan Jelinek, Akufen) goes more for the techy side. For those that don’t know these guys, don’t worry. Dub in this context shouldn’t bring images of sleepy sidestepping. Their music is full of echoing energy. This will be a great party." Time: 10:30pm
Venue: Lil Green Lounge (35 Grand St at Thompson)

The part that I have changed my nationality for, would be the after party. Elementt of Culture will feature DJ Nova and Pacha Collecitve and Swiss Musical Guests.
