DINING WITH MR. HAMILTON
We love it when people do all the work for us. First, about.com put together a list of "public" bathrooms in the city (all be in quite incomplete) and now the Daily News has hunted down 100 meals for less than $10. There are no fast food restaurants and no pizza joint but they do cover all the boroughs and everything from American to Argentine cuisine. Check the site for the full roster.

WARP RECORDS INVASION It's

WARP RECORDS INVASION

It's time for another warp jam at rothko with some of our crazy friends in from london to help kick out the jams and kick back the drinks. Buddy Peace's name may ring a bell since he's recently done an ultra-fresh mix for the always solid Boomkat Records as well as the cut-up party mix that accompanied the Warp Vision DVD. Buddy's quickly becoming one of the most talked about hip-hop djs in london.

Also in town are the crew from london's consistently insane Wheels Instead of Hooves party. Their trademark mix of electro/rock/techno/hip-hop/acid and whatever the hell else they feel like should be enough to get you on your feet, then on your ass, then back on your feet again. They'll also be throwing a major rager at rothko the following night so get psyched suckers...

In an installation entitled

In an installation entitled "Still-Life of Beefsteak and Cheese,’Äù Seattle-based artist Alex Schweder presents designs for wallpaper exploring color and scent in relation to their construction of a "succulent" space. Set up as three sheets with the same striped pattern, different ratios of scented scratch n’Äô sniff varnishes and colored inks allow a room to be more or less visually or olfactorally intense but evenly delicious. The name of the wallpaper sets up an expectation of savory flavors in the color while the scent of donuts evokes an unseen sweetness. Opening lecture starts 6.15pm, followed by reception. Exhibition until March 7.

ROOM creates a space

ROOM creates a space for all of us to inhabit. Wynne Greenwood and Fawn Krieger build a utopian living room out of wood, foam, cheap carpet, and video projections that envisions new ideas about community and home. An immersive video environment during the day, the installation serves as a stage in the evening for the art punk band Tracy + the Plastics. Greenwood assumes the role of each band member, performing live as Tracy, with Nikki and Cola present as video projections. Exploring notions of identity and communication, the band hangs out, re-imagining 1970s feminist consciousness-raising groups and questioning the present state of radical feminism.

The good word from

The good word from FreeNYC favorite, Cool Hunting, is that once again this year, you "hack" the Pepsi/iTunes hyped at the superbowl. The skinny is that you have to lean back on the bottle and read under the lable. If you see "again" then you have a looser. Full details reside with the originator of the trip (whom we give full credit), MacMerc. Enjoy your downloading.

While this movie did

While this movie did come out forever ago and you could just rent it/add it to your Netflix queue/download it, its nice to view films on a big screen. The NYU Center for Global affairs will be screening Ju Dou as part of their "Politics and Art in Cinema" series. This film was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1990. Ju Dou centers around a young woman who is forced to marry out of poverty and becomes the third wife of a wealthy silk dyer in 1920s China She is repeatedly mistreated and cruelly disciplined by her husband, Jin-shan, for failing to bear him an heir. She ends up falling in love with Jin-shan's younger, kinder nephew, Tian-qing, and the two begin a secret affair that could have tragic consequences. The film will be followed by a discussion lead by Dan Georgakas, consulting editor of “Cineaste."

We keep hammering these guys

We keep hammering these guys and for good reasons. Sounding like the bastard child of Matmos and Tortoise who was raised on Prince records and Casio keyboards, The Epochs bring a truly unique blend of high electro-rock-funk to the stage time and time again. Being stuck in NYC

Being stuck in NYC (again) for Fat Tuesday, we search high and low to find the proper place to drink giant glasses of nondescript fruit juice while adorning girls with 50¢ plastic beads (oh, what a holiday). And I have to say that, New York, I am a little upset with you. This is not a holiday of $8 hurricanes and $4 bottles of Abita. This is a day for every poor sap to get silly sloshed and cause an excusable raukus.

But fear not, FreeNYC, because after hours of internet research, I have found the party for you. Town Tavern hosts a Fat Tuesday party with a hurricane happy hour, 2 for 1 hurricanes and Coors Light bottles all night, and FREE jumbalaya. Plus, dancers, Coors Light girls, and prizes such as a new snowboard or $250 for having the most beads at the end of the night. And to top it all off, grab some Green Giant out of your pantry because you can get a free drink and 10 free beads with a canned food donation to City Harvets. Damn, now thats what I call a Fat Tuesday party.

Ok, so the truth

Singh is known for explaining the ideas of the big bang in language that even the likes of myself would understand. BAST OPENING
Mas Vino, first New York solo show. Plus the release of his new book Revolucion De Papel. With DJ Kienyo.

"BAST's posters have been a constant part of the urban art landscape of New York and Europe for the past 10 years. While his artwork has remained a prominent fixture in the NY urban environment, he himself has remained a very elusive character. Acting something like a Loch Ness that rarely shows up in public and who's very existence has been debated. Very little is known of his work outside of what the public sees wheat pasted throughout the city. His works on canvas are a complete departure from what he presents on the street; it is aggressive and bold, offering a fresh take on POP art and appropriated imagery from all types of media. If you have ever wanted to know BAST's work more comprehensively, this show will be a unique opportunity to see something completely new and unexpected from this very elusive artist."

Once upon a time,

Once upon a time, way back in the day (ok maybe not way back, but like 96), people used to use these funny little cameras called Hi8 to shoot skate videos. Now that everything has gone digi, a lot of this old footage has been re-edited and re-released. Tonight, check out the premier of NY Revisited-Volume 1- 1996-1997. Edited from the original tape, there will be previously unseen clips from some of NYC's best skateboarders in their prime. Additionally, there is footage of NYC locations that are no longer skateable today (ie: The World Trade Center, The Brooklyn Banks, etc.).

So here's your treasure map

So here's your treasure map to all the booty that is to be had this weekend: Friday, grab a 40oz. from your favorite deli and hit up the Rojo exhibit after work at Stay Gold (its always too hard to get a drink there anyway during the openings). Then, grab some dinner on your way to the Riviera for the 1Aeon opening before ending up at Supreme Trading for the M.I.A. listening party/StayGold afterparty. Saturday is all about sleeping in and then hitting up the Festival of Dreams opening exhibit before making your way to cental part to see The Gates at night because al the tourists are afraid of the part at night (don't forget to download your playlist). Crawl back to Williamsburg for the local flavor at Triple Crown. Sunday, pop up early and get out to Grand Army Plaza to hear Martha Cooper speak of all things hip-hop and then rest up before doing double duty at Supreme Trading this weekend as the Heat boys bring DJ Cameo to town for some more dirty grime beats straight from the UK. Pray that you make it to work on Monday and be stoked that you got the art, the culture, and the party in this weekend. Whew! Have a good one.

BICYCLE SWAP MEET
It’Äôs getting warm soon, you’Äôre getting a hibernation layer of tubbiness, and the MTA keeps raising its prices. Time to get a bike. And instead of getting a bike from some pansy antique-dealer at a Chelsea Flea Market, you should get your bike from a bike messenger. Not only will it be way cheaper, it will also give you a million more street cred points, because it will probably have blood on it. If you’Äôve already got a bike, no worries, you can get parts there too. You can also trade the lame one you’Äôve got in for a super-cool, bloody one. If you want to sell the huge cache of bikes you’Äôve been hiding in your closet, bring $20. You’Äôll be able to get a 2’Äôx 4’Äô table with it.

FESTIVAL OF DREAMS 2
The gallery says: "Lombard-Freid Fine Arts is pleased to begin its 2005 season with The Festival of Dreams (Part 2), an international group show including Vahakn Arslanian (Belgium), Jonathan Bepler, Heiko Blankenstein (Germany), Marc Bijl (Netherlands), Brian Degraw, Jessica Dickinson, Corrina Peipon, David Sena, Markus Selg (Germany), Alex Tennigkeit (Germany). The artists in this exhibition have dynamic, diverse and holistic approaches to their respective mediums. The work touches upon aspects of the romantic tradition, poetics, political propaganda, nature, artifice, convergence and alchemy."

We say: Jonathan Bepler is in this exhibit. Bepler has done crazy production work on Mathew Barney's Cremaster series so we can only image what his video installation is going to be like. Plus, the opening party tonight features Algis Kisys (legendary founding member of the Swans, Foetus and Glenn Branca alum), Eric Hubbel (also ex- Foetus, Glen Branca, and Big Fat Love), and Rebecca Gaffney as entertainment. Good hi/low cross over event.

Adfunture hits New York

Adfunture hits New York City today to exhibit some of their newest "prototypes." From their track record, that could be just about anything but we are going to venture that it will mostly be their newest vinyl toys. Hopefully, these artists will be represented on canvas as well. What gets us excited is that French artist Fafi is in the show and it is a rare treat to have her work in NYC. Other artist include Dave Kinsey, Flying Fortress, D*Face, Shawn Smith, and Doma. All too often, we

All too often, we get hung up on the illustrative facets of art. Its a bit easier to explain and a lot more laid back (plus, the openings are usually flowing with beer and have DJs and other enticing elements). And then someone like Richard Tsao comes along and we remember how deep the beauty of painting can go. The press release puts it best in saying that "Tsao's transcendental canvases slowly reveal their nuances and reflect the inner light of the creator and elicit a wide variety of responses in the attentive viewer." Continues through April 9th

The NYPL continues to help

The NYPL continues to help us relive our glory days. Tonight they screen the Spike Lee classic, Do the Right Thing. If your an 80's child, and you were like 8 when this came out, its a wonderfully dated classic from the Kid n' Play days with a style mimicked in just about every video on Yo! MTV Raps... IMDP poorly summarizes... "It's the hottest day of the year in the Bed-Stuy district of Brooklyn, and tensions are growing in this black ghetto area, with the only local businesses a Korean grocery and Sal's Pizzeria. Mookie, Sal's delivery boy, manages to always be at the center of the action."

Date: Monday, February 28th, 2004
Time: 6:00pm
Venue: NYPL, Jefferson Market Branch (425 Avenue of the Americas)
Cost: Free

A retrospective lecture... Catherine Bauer,

A retrospective lecture... Catherine Bauer, an architectural and social critic, was witty, whimsical and irreverent. The individual most responsible for Americas public housing movement in the 1930s, she challenged a democratic society to build imaginatively. Her mentor and lover, Lewis Mumford, propelled her intellectual ebullience as she, in turn, sparked his knowing experience. The result was soaring love, release of energies and Bauer's seminal text, Modern Housing (1934). Following the publication of this book, Bauer extended her political advocacy and social insight into planning, design, urban life, racial bias, the environment and labor relations.

Can't tear your eyes

Can't tear your eyes away from the lesbian action on The OC, ashamed of your new addiction to the tropical drama, LOST, or maybe you just need a fix of celebrity gossip from the daily taploid shows. No matter what your mind numbing drug of choice, your not alone. We all know its wrong to stare at the idiot box, but admit it, you all do it anyway. According to Ken Tucker, television is where mass culture action really is. Tonight, at Barnes and Noble, he discusses his new book Kissing Bill O'Reilly, Roasting Miss Piggy: 100 Things to Love and Hate About TV . Tucker has been described as possessing "an encyclopedic knowledge of television and a rambunctious enthusiasm for the medium." Maybe he can help us figure out what exactly is going on on LOST.
