ANDREA KOSTYAL OPENING AT

ANDREA KOSTYAL OPENING AT STAIN
Come out and support the new-ish bar in Williamsburg with their latest art opening. Emotion, integrity, honesty and power of expression are the keywords to describe the abstract art of Andrea Kostyal. She says of her work: "In my art I try to combine and reconcile strivings of the body and aspirations of the mind. This clash is the birthplace of abstract expressionism."
She has been living in Connecticut for the past two years and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions across New England and NYC. Her abstract expressionist collage paintings showcase rich texture, bright colorful imagery that fit into the postmodern climate of contemporary art.

Student films are always hit or miss but there are usually some jems and always a bit of inspiration. Plus, free cheese and (if your lucky) wine to make it all go down smoothly. This time around, Parsons' diversity committee will be presenting a selection of student films that confronts the audience with their diverse perceptions on culture, traditions, minority and race relations. Highly recommended.

TONIGHT: PHIL & ME LAUNCH RECEPTION
Phil & Me is a personal document of a daughter's use of photography to try to control her relationship with her father and the disease that has crippled him, as well as an attempt to focus public understanding upon the essential humanity of all victims of schizophrenia - all fathers, brothers, daughters, loved ones. It is an attempt to recognize the worth and contribution of those who survive the nightmares and dreams of schizophrenia.

The book is Amanda's exploration into the world of her father, Philip Tetrault - a poet who has lived with schizophrenia since he attended McGill University at the age of 21. Philip was a poet suffused with promise and was hailed by Leonard Cohen as Canada's best kept secret in 1989... before he slipped into yet another schizophrenic nightmare.

FreeNYC Thursday Art Crawl: Loads

FreeNYC Thursday Art Crawl: Loads of great new show opening today and continue throughout the month. Here are our suggestions on what not to miss tonight.

SHIFT OPENING RECEPTION

It is widely believed that a bike messenger, TAKI 183, was the founder of the modern graffiti movement. To this day, bicycles and contemporary street art-encompassing everything from graffiti tags and throws to vinyl stickers and wheatpaste posters-go hand-in-hand as two primary signifiers of the modern city. One a mode of transportation, the other a trace of everyday urban existence. Both delineate mobility and the movement and ephemeral energy of the urban environment. Just as bikes are all-terrain, so is graffiti art, finding its way into the highest reaches and shadowed alleys of the city landscape.

Shift is an exhibition of eight custom-designed Be.BIKE bicycles by eight highly-acclaimed graffiti-influenced artists: FUTURA, HAZE, KAWS, KENJI HIRATA, MATZU MTP, MISK, SKWERM, and STASH. Each bike has been altered completely to represent the artist's vision. Shift brings together a representation of the historical expanse of street art, from the 1970s to the present. It investigates the blurred boundaries of art and the quotidian sublime within design and urban life. Production of each artist's edition is limited to 100 units. The exhibition will be accompanied by a video installation by REID VAN RENESSE.

FRIDAY

BLACK BOX CLOSING PARTY
I've been posting things and writing about the Black Box series I've been conducting over at the free103 gallery for the past month or so. The gist of the game is that it has been a series of live improvisatory broadcasts to which others have responded in some way -- often on the spot. Some folks came all the way down from Canada to participate. It's been great.

Tomorrow is the closing party. It's not too late to respond. Please bring yourselves, food, musical instruments, something small and funny and homemade, rum, thoughts written or otherwise, and a partridge in a pair tree.

The gallery will be open all afternoon for mounting/displaying work. There will be a DJ all evening to mix the sound samples people have donated. And there will definitely be a bit of video/slides/sound work and hopefully food and live performance. There will also be food and drink and general merry making. I am also going away for two months and would like to say goodbye to you.

FOUR DAY AUTONOMOUS SPACE On

FOUR DAY AUTONOMOUS SPACE
On November 30, residents of the Casa del Sol community center were evicted without warning by the NYPD. They were given 10 minutes to leave, not enough time to retrieve much of their belongings, besides which all of them believed they would soon return to live there or at least get the rest of their things.

Within two hours of the eviction... a four-alarm fire, somehow, that resulted in all of the livable (therefore re-habitable by the residents of Casa del Sol) areas of the large building being destroyed by the inferno. Sixteen firefighters were hospitalized as a result of the fire.

So, this art space on 37th street has been offered to the Casa del Sol collective for four days. Donations will be accepted at the events to help the collective find a new home. So coming to the space is a great way to support some really awesome people.

This event will go until Friday early morning. Extravaganza of Ridiculous Proportions will be assisting the hosting of an amazing art space 24 hours a day. That's 24 hours a day, for four days. Music, games, art making, and much more.

This is in support of the Casa del Sol squatters recently evicted as well as a lead up to Friday's Extravaganza party. We are looking for more artists, of all kinds, and musicians to come at any hour (especially evening) and perform and have a good time. (Email here or show up there.)

There will be bands of all types playing all four evenings as well as many types of artwork, including human size puppet making for the party on Friday and for merriment at the art space as well. Continues through Friday

REFUSE! special edition tonight at APT

Snax (Captain Comatose- Playhouse, Mental Groove, Freundinnen- Berlin) LIVE PERFORMANCE plus Dirty Dirty Dietz and James F!@#$%^ Friedman (Refuse!) DJ SET

$5 Rum Punch all night

yeah yeah we know that you're sick of xmas parties, menorahs, egg nog, good cheer, stockings and fat guys in red suits. we are too. that's why you should blow off whatever boring thing you were planning to do tomorrow night and come to APT for a very special edition of REFUSE! not only is it the last REFUSE! of the year, but it's one of the last chances you'll have to get totally retarded with all your NYC peoples before everyone goes home for holidays or heads out of town for a much-needed break. there's new year's eve coming up, but we all know that lots of your friends won't be around (like Ben and I) and it's such a let down every year anyhow...

the other reason you should come out to REFUSE! is because we have a live performance by SNAX, one half of the infamous Berlin-based Captain Comatose (Playhouse Records). Alongside his CC partner Khan as well as on his own, Snax has created some of the strangest, most infectious dance music i know of. Just check his releases on Mental Groove and Freundinnen or peep his website. www.snaxonline.com if you don't know

so in summary: screw the holidays, love your friends, come get drunk and dance with them (and us) at apt tomorrow night. we're gonna miss you and we won't be back until 2005...

'Tis The Season For Wreath Art

In between the madness that is holiday shopping and trying to fight off the plague that seems to be going around, you may want to try to get in on some holiday inspired art. While I slept on the opening of the Wreath Interpretation Exhibit last week, I suggest your try to squeeze it in this week. Celebrate the onset of winter and the holiday season with all sorts of wreaths made from unusual materials, including fused glass, forged metal, paper cranes, hammered metal, plaster cast fingers and toes, and model trains. Many participating artists use their wreaths to delve into contemporary themes ranging from politics to architecture.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL...

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL...

so we searched and searched and there really isn't much going on this weekend except for some caroling and some eating and everyone visiting their family. Because of this, we won't be writing a wrap-up this week but hopefully there will be lots of great cheap NYE relief events next weekend. So eat a lot of food, remember the religious aspect of the holidays (if it applies to you) and spend time with the ones that you love. Have a great weekend. (Oh, and see above if you are looking for some fun tonight... and click the link for some holiday cartoon fun)

Public Service Announcement I have

Public Service Announcement

I have a new obsession that I wanted to tell you all about. Getting from point A to point B in this city has at times been a challenge (just ask Chris about the time we tried to go to the Noguchi Museum). If you need a lil assistance check out Hop Stop, a website that helps you get around all of NYC. Put in your address and your destination and get walking and subway directions to anywhere you need to go. Its real helpful for finding museums in Long Island City that you have no idea how to get to or that bar in Brooklyn you have been trying to find for months. Hope this helps!

Escape, Exodus, and Secession (or

Escape, Exodus, and Secession (or "Should I Flee The U.S.A.?")
Increasingly, political theory is attempting to understand the desirability of exodus as a resistance strategy. In U.S. post-election milieu, secession from America is only being discussed half-heartedly, yet much of the world the question of exodus and escape is a topic of serious discussion. But with no 'frontier' and no 'outside' in which to flee, what does escape mean? And how might exodus as a mode of resistance be practiced in world that is 'borderless'? Why is withdrawal not simply an act of resignation, and how might it become an act of creation? Please join us in the second of a series of a monthly revolutionary potluck discussions in which the 'potluck' refers not to food but to a smorgasbord of ideas. We invite all who wish to present responses to these questions to come with a prepared 3-5 minute presentation, and hope that all will participate in the open discussions which follow.

Tonight: In a Blue State.

Tonight: In a Blue State. Rants, reflections and elegies about 11/2
Where were you on 11/2? Getting out the vote, no doubt. And watching, waiting, hoping, praying, cursing, as the results trickled in. Then, of course, writing about it. Poet CAROL ROSENFELD and playwright KATHLEEN WARNOCK received many powerful, heartfelt poems, essays and prayers in the days after the election, and rather than just hit "forward" they decided to go forward, by organizing a reading of some of the saddest, maddest, funniest, and wisest pieces. Coming all the way from the Blue State of Oregon, playwright/novelist DONALD OLSON (Queer Corners) will read his "Elegy" and other poems; libertarian, newly-confirmed Episcopal former yeshiva girl (and stalwart Second Amendment supporter) DR. DONNA GAINES (Teenage Wasteland, Misfit'S Manifesto) will read her "Lamentations" Sarah D. Bunting (Tomatonation.com) will read "This is Not Over" which spurred the formation of Thisisnotover.com. DONNA BUNGO will read "God, I'm Bushed." Poets CHERYL B. and REGIE CABICO will read contributions from playwright Robert Patrick (the poem "11/2") and Daniel J. Blau (Dear John Kerry)among other pieces of poetry and prose designed to enrage, outrage, and engage interested Americans (and their friends).
