It's October, so that means that apple picking, pumpkin carving, sweater wearing, and fall foliage are just around the corner. Those of you not heading out of the city to enjoy nature can take in the local version at the Apple Festival in Queens this weekend. And if the great outdoors is not your idea of weekend fun then Saturday is full of great art events including Gary Basemen and others at Fuse, Lori Nix's amazing diorama photographs at Alona Kagan, and some fine political work in the wake of last nights debates at Exit Art. Enjoy!
FRIDAY
UP OUR SLEEVE GALLERY OPENING
I can either hype this up as some of the best chilled out dubby hip-hop on the block right now with the likes of the Dublab crew and my personal hero Prefuse 73, or I can bill it as a fresh retake on the concept of album art by more than 100 artists, including visual heros like Haze, Dave Kinsey, Glen E. Friedman, Jack Black, Mr. Scruff, and Kid Acne. Either way, I can tell you that its the best 5 bucks that you will spend this friday.
Tonight, Gary Lutz Readying
More private poet than plot-driven prose developer, fiction writer Gary Lutz' use of language is wildly experimental and engaging even as his sentence structure is crystal clear and precise. Similarly, while his characters slog through lives riddled with small obsessions and little meaning, their melancholy revelations apply with a wondrous and frightening exactitude: "Because some days the world holds true at the drop of a hat... Other days, you can barely exempt yourself from what you might still be capable of." Though he's not widely known, Lutz has already proved himself capable of much. Tonight is a rare opportunity to hear him read from unpublished work, along with writer Rachel Sherman.
Former guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction, Dave Navarro, will be doing a book signing at Barnes and Noble on Astor Place today. His new book Don't Try This At Home documents life in the Navarro household. His only rule in the house is anyone who enters must also enter the photo booth. From strippers and drug dealers, cleaning ladies and pizza delivery guys, to celebrities and record execs, the book uses photos and stories to depict his rock and roll lifestyle.
So it seems like the best way to get a book deal these days is to, at one point in your life, be in the band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Earlier this week was Dave Navarro's book, and now we have front man's, Anthony Kiedis', book Scar Tissue. He has been pouring his heart out since the 1991 release of their first album, but his memoir gives us a much different look on his life. Check out the book signing Wednesday night at Barnes and Noble.

Earlier this week a friend suggested to me that there are other things going on in the world besides book signings. And while I was shocked and appalled by such a claim, it is true. So, with that I promise this will be the last post about book signnigs for a while. (But I can't help it if every 90's rock super star is writing books these days) Anyway here is what you need to know. Smashing Pumpkins front man, Bill Corgan, will be at the Virgin Mega Store on Union Square signing his new book of poetry, Blinking With Fists.

A couple quick shop keeping things over here at FreeNYC (in bullet form).
- First, and foremost, thanks to everyone for checking in regularly. Your daily hits have increased 4 fold over the past 3 months and its great to hear a positive response from people about what we do.
- 2ndly, I'd like to publicly welcome Tessa to our writing staff. Tessa, our glam-tastic LA transplant will be helping out with the day to day as well as writing for our upcoming features section that will be longer articles about free New York related issues (see our free toilets article about a month back). She will also be socializing on our part while we slave away at our computers.
- A Redesign, Finally! We'll be tweaking it a bit over the next few weeks but the new format is much easier on the eye and we are quite pleased. I hope that you like it too. We will soon include links to all out favorite blogs, external sites, and our "features" section so look for all that soon.
- Bad News: Our Weekend Wrap-Up has gotten so large that we have been banned as spammers by AOL. Despite all of my efforts to resolve this, they are not budging and I can not even send personal mail from this domain any longer. This makes me sad, honestly, because I never intended this to be a spam kind of thing. Its not like I am selling Viagra or Condos. As a result, those of you with .aol emails will not be receiving Weekend Wrap-Ups for the next few weeks. We are making steps to correct this (see below)
- We are switching to a bulk email service. Starting next week, all Weekend Wrap-Ups will go out through a bulk email service. This is the only way that we can quell the threats of the AOL beast. As a result, you will need to double-opt in to our list to receive the emails. Truthfully, this is much more professional and what we always wanted but since no one on the FreeNYC staff is a web programmer it has been difficult to do. Therefore, you must sign back up to the list by entering your email address in the box on the right of this page. It will take 2 minutes and we do not sell your info. It is purely to prove to AOL and Hotmail that you want to be on the list. Sorry and thank you. (ps. you will see this a few times over the next weeks to make sure everyone gets it)
Thanks and have a great weekend:
Chris and the FreeNYC crew
Weekend Wrap-Up, 10.15 - 10.17:
First, and formost, we are swithing to a new email system because we have been blacklisted by AOHell and are in negotiations with Hotmail. If you wish to receive (or continue to receive) weekly updates from us via email, please click here and sign up.
This weekend is both CMJ (which costs at least a bit of loot) and the DUMBO Art Under The Bridge Festival. If you need a CMJ fix, check out the Def Jux Showcase at Virgin Megastore USQ on Saturday, else hop the F train out to DUMBO for the open studios, parade, beer garden, and non stop free festivities. Most events this weekend span two or three days so if you miss it on Saturday, you've always got Sunday to make it up. Have a good one. We do not sell our lists or reveal your info. Until this is resolved, people with AOHell email address will not be able to receive email from us (I can't even email my mother!). Thanks so much for making this grow beyond our means... its really a good thing in the long run. Onto the Update:

Coming in under the gun on these (been out of town guys)... Several great gallery opening tonight. Most of these events continue through so if you can't make it tonight then the weekend is always an opportunity:
LARISSA BATES, THE PEACEABLE KINGDOM Bates' highly narrative works are inhabited with wrestlers, animals, and hybrid creatures she refers to as "Tiny-Baby-Creatures" and "Budgeons." The Budgeon landscape reflects the intersection of nature and urban development while using an imaginary character to subversively address issues associated with various social codes. The works examine preconceived notions of masculinity intertwined with a hint of nostalgia. Although the title of the exhibition alludes to a harmonious existence, undercurrents of rage and violence are at the foreground of the exhibition. Bates' immensely detailed paintings cleverly oscillate between a chaotic and controlled environment.
Seems like everyone is sleeping this weekend out in anticipation of next weekends festivities, but that shouldn't stop you from finding a few fine events. Make sure you call to get the details for the jello-loving "What Would Bill Cosby Due" Event and check out the Intersector art opening out in Williamsburg on Saturday. Have a good one.
FRIDAY
BEATRIZ MILHAZES OPENING
The exhibition includes five large-scale paintings and three collages in which Milhazes celebrates her native Brazil and the culture of carnival, with all of its resplendent color and vibrancy.
Over the last decade, Milhazes has engaged in an ongoing dialogue between the ornate and unadorned, geometric and organic, high and low culture. It is the foundation of her work. Her unabashed use of color and pattern is balanced by harmonious and lyrical compositions.

Robert C.Morgan will speak on the recent advent of electronic communications and its virtual consequences on our globalized information-based network, our view of culture has changed radically from previous generations. We have been thrust into a tempest in which we are potentially connected at every moment to the world around us. But what does this global interconnectivity really mean? What has been gained and what has been lost in the process of becoming tuned-in? Has this rapidly accelerating, commercial momentum (often mistaken for information) altered our critical ability to determine what is significant in our lives? Given that this virtual transformation has affected the quality of our lives, can we assume it has also influenced the way we understand art? Will art continue to survive as a signifier of the human presence in the future?

KARIM RASHID OPENING
The gallery is transformed into a total Rashid environment created with furniture and design prototypes from the decade between 1988 and 1998.Through his curvaceous, biomorphic forms, luscious colors, and luxurious materials, Rashid creates objects of seduction; objects that announce themselves not as neutral workhorses, but as vehicles of pleasure. Rashid's individual aesthetic and beliefs about the power of design are so strong that his work is now instantly recognizable, whether the object is a sofa, perfume bottle, or pair of sneakers. The exhibition is a valuable opportunity to look backward on Rashid's consistently forward-looking work through very rare one-off pieces that never went to production but were frequently published. The pieces were hand made in Japan, Canada, Italy, and USA.
